  • National security: Brace up, 2022 will be more challenging than 2021, CDS Irabor charges officers

National security: Brace up, 2022 will be more challenging than 2021, CDS Irabor charges officers

The Federal Government has yesterday unfolded plans for a reinvigorated anti-terror war next year to get rid of insurgents, kidnappers and other criminal elements.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, who acknowledged the need to regig the battle, charged officers and men of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to brace for more challenges next year.

Gen. Irabor said although the outgoing year was challenging, 2022 will be more challenging in all aspects of national security.

He urged the military to rekindle commitment, efficiency and effectiveness in a bid restore security and peace.

The CDS, who spoke at the decoration of newly promoted Air Force and Naval officers, said: “You need to escalate your level of commitment, your level of efficiency and effectiveness because if 2021 is challenging, I like to assure you that 2022 will be more challenging and that is the reason I like to call on you to please brace up because you must at all cost take away every form of insecurity in our land.

“Looking at your pedigree, and the report that was received during the Council meeting, I know you will live up to this challenge.

“I have no doubt in my mind that all of you that have been decorated up to the two star rank, you have all that it takes to deliver on the goals that have been demanded of you.

“Let me equally add that the Commander-in-Chief in the light of the various support he has given to us and the assurances he has given to us, more importantly issues that pertain to our welfare and the administration of men and women of the Armed Forces, much is required of us. I like to urge you to please, ensure that our loyalty to Mr. President and the Constitution of the Federal Republic remain rock solid, let it not be that for whatever reason that our loyalty should not be doubted. It has never been in doubt and I know, it shall not be in doubt”.

Gen. Irabor added: “No one needs any clarification or awareness as to the challenges that we face in our country and we not only all need to shy away from the fact that the Armed Forces of Nigeria has done very well within the limits of the resources that are available to deal with the issues that demand the attention of the Armed Forces.

“I believe that you all know that the nation is happy with the efforts of the Armed Forces because of the enormous contributions you have made to ensure that there is peace and security in our land. Today, I make bold to say, especially for the Northeast and most parts of our country, this is the quietest December we have had in the last couple of years, and all thanks to you men and women of the Armed Forces and of course our supporting agencies for this worthy contribution that you have made.

“I like to also inform you that the Commander-in- Chief is happy with you and he demands more from you as we enter the new year”.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, explained that in the military, “promotion process is usually a painstaking exercise that entails the selection of the ‘best out of the best’ for elevation”, adding that, “promotion is not just given to personnel for doing their jobs very well, but also for demonstrating potentials to do more, especially at higher levels”.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo, noted that quality leadership in the Armed Forces is essential for the optimal realisation of its objectives.

He said: “In the profession of arms, the optimal employment of men and material has direct impact on operational outcome in the theatre and national security, as a whole. Hence, despite the huge number of annual enlistments into the military, only the most dedicated and loyal rise to the very apex of the profession.”

  • Asaba hosts National Sports Festival 2022

Asaba hosts National Sports Festival 2022

The National Council on Sports on Monday approved Nov. 2 to Nov. to 15, 2022 as dates for the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State.

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, disclosed this in Asaba during the Council’s extra- ordinary meeting.

The minister’s Special Assistant on Multimedia, Toyin Ibitoye, in a statement, quoted the minister as assuring of a befitting festival at “Asaba 2022”.

“This meeting today puts us at the cusp of another National Sports Festival (NSF) which we refer to as our own Olympics.

“The National Council on Sports meeting today has become necessary in order to update Council on developments, and deliberations on issues that concern the hosting of the 21st National Sports Festival which Delta State had earlier won the rights to host in November 2022.

“Interestingly, Delta State came first at the recently concluded Edo 2020.

“Now, we are happy that they have the opportunity not just to host, but to validate their first position,” Dare said.

The minister said the ministry has been working closely with Delta State to fine-tune preparations for the bi-annual festival.

“Arising from the award of the hosting rights to Delta State, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has continued to engage the Host State on the need to fine-tune the road map in preparation for the NSF,” Dare added.

He commended Gov. ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State for his immense contribution to sports development in the state and Nigeria as a whole.

Dare stressed that the feat achieved by the nation at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics won’t have been possible without the 12 athletes adopted by the governor under the ministry’s Adopt-an-Athlete initiative.

” He single-handedly adopted the largest number of athletes and we are glad that out of the two medals we won, one of them was won by one of the athletes adopted by the governor. That is Ese Brume,” the minister said.

Dare said as part of efforts to upgrade the Festival, the ministry in collaboration with the office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), has established a Department that is solely responsible for the Festival and Para-Sports.

Gov. Okowa, in his remarks, thanked the minister for the opportunity to host the Festival, promising to not only surpass the standards of Edo 2020, but make the 21st edition of the games, the best in its history.

The highpoint of the event was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the hosting of the games by Gov. Okowa and the minister.

  • APC National Convention: Buhari endorses February 2022

APC National Convention: Buhari endorses February 2022

President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed February 2022 as new date for the National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chairman of Progressive Governors’ Forum, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, confirmed this development to State House correspondents at the end of a closed door meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was also attended by the Chairman of APC Caretaker Committee, Mai Mala Buni, who is also the governor of Yobe, as well as Gov. Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa.

Bagudu, who was not specific on the exact date for the convention in February, said the convention was shifted because four states were yet to complete their congresses.

He said: “Yesterday, Nov. 21, the Progressive Governors’ Forum met, where we congratulated and thanked the Caretaker Committee for working so hard in leading the party. We also thanked the President for supporting them to deliver on their mandate.

“I also explained yesterday that the Progressive Governors’ Forum discussed the issue of national convention of the party and they mandated us to come and discuss with the President as the party’s leader to give the input of the Governors so that the party and the President will consider.

“Part of the inputs we got yesterday was that we still have four states which are in the process of completing their congresses like Anambra; understandably because of the recent gubernatorial election, Zamfara and two others, because of logistic challenges and then, Christmas is around the corner and early January we will be very busy with Ekiti.

“So, the Governors, based on all these, suggested the party and the President should graciously consider February and the President is favourably disposed to the suggestion.”

The National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, who also spoke on the outcome of the meeting, said: “The Progressive Governors’ Forum after their meeting, has suggested February to the party and the President has concurred so we are going ahead to plan for the convention in February.

“Nigerians should expect more unity and progress as a result of the forthcoming convention.”

    On insinuations in some quarters that he might be delaying the convention to extend his tenure as the Caretaker Chairman of the APC, Buni said;

“Am I a jobless person who is always trying to extend his tenure; to do what? I have my primary responsibility as a Governor to go back to my state and carry out my primary responsibility.

“What I am here to do is ad-hoc and of course to reposition the party and that is exactly what we have been able to achieve.”

  • 2022 will be tough if Nigeria fails to restructure —Gani Adams

2022 will be tough if Nigeria fails to restructure —Gani Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, yesterday, said with the current situation of things in the nation, Nigerians may have to be ready for a tough 2022, if the Federal Government fails to embrace restructuring.

Speaking during the second edition of the Odo Erelu festival in Lagos, Adams said that as of today, the Nigerian economy is obviously in a terrible condition, while naira is falling on a daily basis.

His words: “For instance, N700 exchanges for one British Pound Sterling at the moment, while the Dollar is put at N578, and Euro is currently N656, at the official rate. Our naira continues to fall to the global currencies. And this has affected the exchange rates in the global market.

“The economy is obviously not stable. Prices of essential food and commodities are on the high side. A bag of rice produced here in Nigeria is put at N25,000, while garri, which is also a very important commodity for the low-income earner, is no longer affordable to the people.

“Today in Nigeria, nothing is free because everything has been monetized. And corruption has taken its toll on the entire system. Meanwhile, inflation and the current economic downturn have triggered the growing spate of insecurity across the country.

“In Nigeria today, the middle class could hardly survive the harsh economic crisis while the lower class is languishing in poverty. We don’t need a prophet to tell us that by 2022, the naira might still slip further beyond what we can salvage because prices of commodities have gone beyond our reach.

“From the present economic situation in the country, if President Buhari fails to save the economy from collapsing before December, this year, God forbids, we should be ready for a very tough time by 2022.

“Federating units will allow each region to be able to harness the social, political and economic potentials of their respective regions. It will boost agriculture and provide effective security for farmers.”

He also said that many of the evils that befell Yorubaland were as a result of ignorance and failure to celebrate ancestors.

  • Infantino ‘confident’ in 2022 despite Qatar crisis

FIFA is confident the diplomatic crisis sweeping Qatar will normalise and not threaten the 2022 World Cup, the organisation’s president, Gianni Infantino, said in an interview published Sunday.

“We are facing a diplomatic crisis,” Infantino told Switzerland’s Le Matin Dimanche newspaper. “I am confident the region will return to a normal situation.”

He told the paper FIFA was “closely watching the evolving situation and we are in regular contact with the highest authorities in Qatar.”

But he stressed that Qatar’s World Cup was five years away.

“Obviously, if football can offer a small contribution to improve the situation, I won’t hesitate to offer my help,” he said, while adding that FIFA should stay clear of “geopolitics.”

Saudi Arabia and allies including the UAE and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting extremism.

The move triggered the most serious diplomatic flap to hit the region in years and experts have said it could impact the 2022 World Cup.

Since being controversially chosen by FIFA in 2010 as the host, Qatar has maintained that it is a politically secure nation despite its location in a volatile region.

Doha has also emphasised that the tournament serves the entire Gulf, and not just the tiny gas-rich emirate.

Those claims have faced fresh scrutiny during the crisis, possibly invigorating a campaign by critics of Qatar to strip Doha of the tournament.
