2023 Election: We owe Nigerians violence – free campaigns – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says  political parties and their candidates owe Nigerians a duty to ensure  violence-free and peaceful electioneering processes ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Mr Felix Morka, APC National Publicity Secretary said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja,  while reacting to the disruption at the rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna on Oct. 17.
The APC scribe said although the event was wrong, it was regrettably self-inflicted.
“As a party, we abhor and condemn any and all forms of violence and interference in the activities or events of any political party.
“Every party is entitled to conduct their legitimate activities in peace and security, and every party has a right to equal protection of the law.
“Perpetrators of disruptive and other acts of violence must be brought to justice,” he said, adding that the PDP had no one but itself to blame for the violent incident at its Kaduna rally.
Morka alledged that the incident was  simply a matter of a rented crowd that went irate when the party’s rent-a-crowd managers allegedly disappeared with funds meant to pay for the rented crowd.
He said rather than hold its head down in shame for the poor and distasteful showing at its Kaduna rally, the PDP sought to blame the APC for its own gross acts and misconduct.
“To be clear, the APC has no hand in the attack as  alleged by the PDP, we have no reason to be perturbed by the rally.
“As Africa’s largest political party, bolstered by the remarkable accomplishments of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, with a vibrant future led by our visionary presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We cannot, in any way, be unnerved by any political party or presidential candidate, certainly, not by the PDP.
“If anything, it was the PDP that scheduled and conducted its rally in Kaduna on the same day that our candidate was scheduled to make an appearance at the Arewa Dialogue,” he said.
Morka noted that a mature and well governed campaign would had avoided an apparent conflict of having two major events take place in the same city on same day.
He said haven made their pitch at the dialogue, it was only fair that the APC candidate be allowed to do same, adding that such civil gesture was, however, uncharacteristic of the PDP.
He assured that the APC-led government remained committed to the highest levels of civility, transparency and respect for the rule of law in its  political engagements.
This, he said, was especially given the credible, free and fair elections it superintended in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun.
“That this government also mid-wifed the massive reform of the Electoral Act, and introduced the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) speaks volume to its commitment to democratic consolidation in our country.
“We urge security agencies to probe the unfortunate Kaduna incident with a view to unmasking and prosecuting the culprits behind it.
“It is imperative that political parties eschew violence and play strictly by the rules of engagement, going forward,” he stressed.
Morka enjoined all parties and candidates to subscribe to issue-based campaigns and observe applicable ethical standards and best practices.
“We owe Nigerians a duty to ensure a violence-free and peaceful electioneering process ahead of the 2023 general elections,” the APC scribe maintained.
Recall that the PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba on Monday, said that  the disruption at its Kaduna rally was carried out by heavily armed hoodlums,  allegedly sponsored by the APC.

The PDP scribe described the attack as reprehensible, saying it further exposed the desperation of the APC.

  • Use of BVAS, Result Viewing Portal has come to stay – INEC

Use of BVAS, Result Viewing Portal has come to stay – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)says the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and Result Viewing (IReV) portal for accreditation and transmission of election results, has come to stay in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said this at the opening of a training for 82 master trainers on election technology for 2023 general election in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that INEC needed to build the capacity of its staff not only to competently handle the devices during the accreditation process but to also respond effectively to any glitche that may occur during election.

“Over the last two years, the commission has increased the deployment of technology in the elections in Nigeria.
“Systems and portals have been designed and developed to cater for different electoral activities ranging from voter registration and accreditation, result transmission from the polling units, the nomination of candidates by political parties to the accreditation of polling agents, observers and journalists for election.

“Of these innovations, most Nigerians are more familiar with the BVAS which doubles as a device for accreditation as well as the upload of the Polling Unit level result sheets to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal in real-time on election day.

“These innovations have increased transparency and public confidence in the electoral process. They are also part of the legal requirements for conducting elections in Nigeria,” he said.

Yakubu said that from the experiences in the recent off-cycle election, INEC was convinced that a critical factor in the deployment of technology in election was training.

“Our plan for the 2023 general election is to commence the training of election officials early and for a longer period of time for optimal understanding of the processes and procedures in order to serve Nigerians better.

“A key component of this effort is election technology.

“Today, we begin the process with the training of master trainers to serve as Registration Area Technical Support (RATECH).

“A total of 82 officials drawn from our offices nationwide will form the nucleus of the training. Over the next three days, they will receive intensive hands-on training on the new technology,” he said.

Yakubu added:“Thereafter, they will train more officials at zonal level to cover all the 8,809 Registration Areas (or Wards). In turn, these officials will be involved in the training ad hoc staff for the 176,846 Polling Units nationwide.’’

He urged the 82 INEC staff involved in the training to pay special attention adding that the commission would not accept laxity on their part.

Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, the Chairman, The Electoral Institute (TEI), said it was necessary for electoral officers to know and understand how to use the technology devices.

Zuru said that INEC underlying philosophy was to ensure that Election officials imbibe the right knowledge, skill sets and attitude needed for the discharge of their duties and responsibilities towards the conduct of free, fair, credible, inclusive and transparent election.

“As we are all aware, the Commission will deploy several technologies in the conduct of the 2023 General elections in compliance with Sections 47(2), 60(4) and 64(4) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of election.
“Therefore, this training is of utmost significance as it further builds your capacity as the Commission’s Master Trainers who coordinate training at strategic levels, thereby enhancing the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
“Particularly significant are the Electronic Voters Register (EVR), Permanent Voters Card (PVC), Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) which are the determinants of the true winner of an election:
“They ensure that every valid vote counts,’’ Zuru said.

  • 2023: ‘I will support you’ – Wike endorses Sanwo-Olu for 2nd term

    2023: ‘I will support you’ – Wike endorses Sanwo-Olu for 2nd term

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Tuesday expressed support for the second term bid of  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

Newsmen reports that Sanwo-Olu is seeking a second tenure on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Wike made the announcement at the 22nd National Women’s Conference, with the theme: ”Spring Forth, Stand Out”, organised by the Committee Of Wives Of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) in Lagos.

He said that Sanwo-Olu’s performance had earned him a second term, commending the governor for  giving women the opportunity to serve in various capacities in the state.

”If you are not in my party and you are doing well, I will support you. If you are in my party and you are not doing well, I will not support you. That is what I stand for,” the Rivers governor said.

According to him, by the grace of God, Sanwo-Olu will be a second-term governor, as Lagos state  has continued to make progress in his administration.

”Talking about raising the capacity of women, no nation can develop without women. So assuming that alone, you should see it as a major project, and if a man does that, of course, you need to encourage such a person.

”I just told you that it is a lesson for me. I am leaving office, if I had known about this, probably, I would have started it. But it is not too late for me. I am going back home to tell my wife, let it be that we have established this, not for us, for future government that are coming.

”Look at the kind of projects they are carrying out. So why would you not support such government that is encouraging this? So I’m not even talking about that, look at the physical infrastructure in Lagos state,  what do you say what do you not say.

”Lagos is the Centre of Excellence. There are some people who will be here, instead of them to make Lagos state to continue to improve, they will bring Lagos down and that is not the case here.

”So for me, I am satisfied, it doesn’t matter the party difference,” he said.

Speaking on the forthcoming general elections, Wike said that what Nigerians were looking for is a president that had the interest of the citizens, a president with experience in governance.

”We are looking for a president that Nigerians can say yes, can put food on the table, will fight insecurity, that is what we are looking for, not some people who are talking about ethnicity,” he said.

House arrest: Gov. El-rufai lies against Peter Obi as video of his interview in 2013 surfaces online [Video]

The governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai on Monday, disclosed that Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra and presidential candidate of Labour Party for the 2023 Presidential Election, ordered his arrest in 2013.

He disclosed this in a meeting of Arewa Joint Committee organised for presidential candidates.

El-Rufai who narrated how the incident happened said, “In 2013, I went to Anambra state, as an official of the APC, to witness the bye-election for governorship, your next guest, Peter Obi, was governor. He got me arrested and detained for 48 hours in my hotel room. Now, I am the governor of Kaduna state. And he is coming to Kaduna. In addition to the police and the SSS, I have one mechanised division Nigerian Army here, if I need to arrest and detain anyone. But we are northerners. We are civilised. We don’t do things like that.”

However, in an interview governor Nasir El-rufai granted TV360 in 2013, he confirmed that the DSS officers who restricted him to his room were from Abuja, as against his earlier claims that Peter Obi arrested him in his hotel room.
