  • 2023 Election: Atiku will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points – Aide

2023 Election: Atiku will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points – Aide

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points for the 2023 Election.

This is contained in a statement by Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe.

Ibe reacting after Abubakar was criticised over alleged comments he made over his call for a northern presidency in 2023 as  Stakeholders’ Meeting in Kaduna State at the weekend.

“For the benefit of the innocent public who might be hoodwinked, what transpired was a direct question on why Atiku should be voted for by the Northern electorate.

“In answering this question, Atiku started with a joke by addressing the questioner as ‘Mr Northerner’ which is a veiled criticism of why he limited his question to the Northern audience in the first place.

“Continuing, Atiku explained without a slur, that what matters the most to the Northern electorate is a candidate who has built bridges of unity across other parts of the country and not necessarily a Northern candidate who lacks the credentials of national spread and acceptability,” he further explained.

He said Atiku “stood agile and cerebral” before his hosts at the Arewa House.

Newsmen reports that the party defended Abubakar, calling him a symbol of national unity, cohesion and tolerance who is comfortable and is loved in all parts of the country.

In a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Sunday, the party condemned the attempt to deliberately distort, doctor, misinterpret and take out of context, the comments by Abubakar at the meeting.

“For clarity and avoidance of doubt Abubakar remains a Pan-Nigerian leader.

”He has never and will never set any part of our country against the other as being mischievously hyped.

“To set the record straight, the PDP Presidential Candidate, in responding within the context of the question put to him at the event noted that he had built bridges across the country and that what Nigerians including an average northerner need was a Pan-Nigerian leader and not an ethnic champion,” the party said.

The party therefore calls on all Nigerians to remain focused on the PDP’s mission to rescue, reunite, rebuild and restore our nation on the path of peace, national cohesion and economic prosperity, which the Atiku/Okowa Presidential ticket represents.”

Newsmen reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) had accused Abubakar of only paying lip service to national unity.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media and Publicity of the council stated on Sunday in Abuja that Abubakar had resorted to ethnic ”jingo” in the face of imminent defeat at the 2023 election.

He stated that Abubakar’s recent statement to the effect that northern Nigerians did not need a Yoruba or Igbo president was the worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism ever uttered by a former vice-president.

  • 2023 Election: APC bigwigs disclose state to kick off campaign

2023 Election: APC bigwigs disclose state to kick off campaign

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has disclosed the state to officially kick off presidential campaign.

According to party bigwigs (name withheld) on Friday, the party chose Ilorin, Kwara state capital as the official port to launch its campaign.

The source, one of Tinubu’s loyalists, told newsmen that the presidential candidate and the stakeholders agreed on the North Central in general and Ilorin specifically.

The closed-door meeting, held for about three hours at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, witnessed heavy traffic and security presence.

In attendance were National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC; Tinubu’s running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima; Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Atiku Bagudu; Deputy Director General of the PCC, Adams Oshimhole; Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila among others.

Though a spokesperson for the Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, told journalists after the meeting that a ‘region’ had been selected for the campaign launch, he was unwilling to divulge it.

He said, “We have agreed on the region to begin the campaign but I am not going to say that now. We have also addressed all the basic issues because we want to carry the leaders of the party along. For now, no date has been chosen (for PCC inauguration). But we will announce that sooner than you think.”

Asked why the APC stakeholders and the candidate had yet to reach a decision on an appropriate date for both the campaign and PCC inauguration, Keyamo admitted that a definite date had not been agreed upon.

According to him, political campaign has to involve a conscious and calculative strategy to ensure no stone is left unturned.

But the source, one of Tinubu’s loyalists, told our correspondent that the lot fell on Kwara State after careful permutation.

He said, “The candidate and the stakeholders deliberated consciously on the issue, considered the odds before they finally agreed for the choice of North Central in general and Ilorin specifically.

“It will be the starting point for our campaign before we spread into other areas. But the date has not been agreed on.”

When contacted on Friday to reconfirm if the campaign is truly launching from Ilorin, both Keyamo and the PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, were hesitant on revealing details.

They neither confirmed nor debunked the report.

Keyamo said, “We cannot confirm anything now. Though it is not a disclaimer, there is no official release on that.”

Onanuga’s position on the issue was also not different.

“Why don’t you wait? The party will announce it. I cannot confirm anything to you on this. You guys (media) should wait for us to unveil the manifesto and the PCC this week. That’s what we plan to do first,” he stated.

  • APGA candidate urge politicians to pursue policies to promote investments, security

APGA candidate urge politicians to pursue policies to promote investments, security

Prof. Benard Odoh, Governorship Candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi has urged politicians to focus on policies that could bring investments and security of life and property for the people.

Odoh told newsmen in Abakaliki on Thursday, that his administration would be committed to social justice in tackling insecurity, if elected as governor in the 2023 polls.

He decried the spate of insecurity across communities in Ebonyi and the country at large, urging politicians to always treat communal issues with social justice.

“In Ebonyi, what has happened is a situation where vested political interests have been pursued at the expense of the common man.

“One thing that I’m committed to do is dispensing of social justice. Once we dispense social justice, there will be relative peace and insecurity will reduce significantly.

“If you visit many of these communities where we are having crisis, you’ll discover that over 80 per cent of the causes of insecurity are all linked to political involvement.

“Political leadership should pursue agenda and policies that can bring investments into the state and the country.

“As a governor from next year, my focus will not be on petty communal leadership tussle. As I speak to you now, many communities who have elected town union did that at the instructions of the government, not on the basis of who the community prefers as a leader.

“You see, the society that is created in that way must have tensions; the Ezza-Effium crisis started from the motor park leadership.

“Once these things are curtailed, we’ll not have situations where weekly or monthly you have tensions in our communities and clashes,” the candidate stated.

Odoh noted that his administration would work day and night to create conducive economic environment in the communities in the state.

“No investor will come to destinations where there are tension or insecurity because business owners come to make profit and not to cause trouble.

“When I come as governor, surveillance is going to be the key in every part of the state.

“We are going to have a surveillance team, even in the capital city; we are going to have an organised, officially supported security system,” he said.

  • 2023 Election: North’s time to pay back Tinubu — Sen. Ibrahim

2023 Election: North’s time to pay back Tinubu — Sen. Ibrahim

Sen. Abu Ibrahim, an All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, says 2023 is the time for the geo-political north to pay back the party’s presidential candidate, Sen Bola Tinubu, by supporting him.

Ibrahim, from Katsina State, stated this on Thursday in Katsina during his visit to the Campaign Office of the Katsina State APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr Dikko Radda.

According to him, the call is to complement the support Tinubu has been giving to candidates from the north.

He recalled how Tinubu supported PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar when he contested for the seat on the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform.

The Senator also recalled that the APC presidential candidate supported President Muhammadu Buhari to win elections on the party’s platform in 2015 and 2019.

Ibrahim said that Tinubu was a lover of the north, adding that “when elected, Tinubu will surely promote the interest of the north”.

He assured Nigerians that if Tinubu became the president, he would replicate the wonderful work he did in Lagos, to cover the whole of Nigeria.

Ibrahim also urged the people of Katsina State to vote for Radda.

He said: “Radda is an intelligent young man that would move the state forward when elected as governor“.

He added that for now he had relocated to Katsina to spearhead reconciliation of party members and promote the candidature of Tinubu and Radda.

According to him, he is currently going round the state to make sure Tinubu and Radda won handsomely during the forthcoming elections.

In his remarks, Radda thanked the senator for his fatherly guidance and assured him that he would not be disappointed in the state during the elections.

Also speaking, the state APC Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Bala Abu-Musawa, disclosed that with the relocation of Sen. Ibrahim to Katsina, Tinubu and Radda victories were guaranteed.

He stressed that Katsina APC was a one big united family, adding that, “we are one, there is no division in the party”.

  • 2023 -INEC reveals number of votes to determine next Nigerian president

2023 -INEC reveals number of votes to determine next Nigerian president

Ninety-five million voters are expected to determine President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in office in the 2023 poll, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, said this at a function organised by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in Washington DC, U.S.

Yakubu said this in a keynote address titled “Nigeria 2023: ensuring credible, peaceful and inclusive elections”, made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

He described the 2023 general election as significant to Nigeria.

“The election is significant because the incumbent President is not eligible to run, this being his second and final term.

“There are 18 political parties in the race to produce the next President to be elected by 95 million voters. We had over 84 million registered voters in 2019.

“But with last Continuous Voter Registration(CVR), we are going to add at least 10 million Nigerians and that will take the Register of Voters to 95 million,” Yakubu said.

He said that election was significant as 95 million Nigerians were expected to vote in 176, 846 polling units.

“Each time Nigeria goes to the poll, it is like the whole of West Africa voting.

“In West Africa, there are 15 countries including Nigeria. But the total number of registered voters in the 14 countries combined is 73 million.

“In Nigeria, it’s going to be 95 million. So, there will be 22 million more voters in Nigeria than the whole of West Africa put together,” Yakubu said.

The chairman said that INEC has learnt a lot of lessons from the 2015 and 2019 general election as well as 103 off cycle election and bye-election conducted after the 2019 general election.

He added that a lot of innovations have been introduced to increase transparency and ensure credibility of the country’s electoral process.

“The new Electoral Act with its many progressive provisions has provided legal backing to the innovations.

“These innovations are now provided for and protected by law, especially those leveraging on technology to improve voter registration, voter accreditation, result management and the promotion of inclusivity for marginalised persons such as women, youths and persons with disability,” he said.

Yakubu said that the introduction of online voter registration was part of the innovations, saying it was very helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the online registration was done alongside physical registration from June 2021 to June 2022 when that option lasted and 12, 298, 944 voters completed their registration.

“This is more than the entire voter population in the Republic of Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde. We are such a huge country of great potentials,” he said.

Yakubu said that INEC has completed the cleaning up of the data of newly registered voters using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) that combine the fingerprint and the facial authentication of registered voters.

He said that those who registered twice and those who were underage or have no reason to register as provided by law have been weeded out.

“The exercise was completed a few days ago. We have not even shared the information with Nigerians, but we have 2.7 million invalid registrants and they have been weeded out.

“We will continue to take steps necessary to protect the integrity of the Register of Voters because it is fundamental to the conduct of elections. There can’t be credible elections without a credible register of voters,” he said.

Yakubu said that Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC) would be available for new registrants by Novembe.

“We are looking at early to the middle of the month to make the cards available.

“We have already printed over 50 percent of the cards but we haven’t delivered them to the states yet.

“As we clean the data, we also print the cards. Nigerians who have registered should be rest assured that they will have their cards ahead of the general election.

“We also need to do so in good time because the law now requires us to publish the number of cards collected per polling unit,” he said.

Yakubu added that INEC also introduced other portals for things like accreditation of observers, media organisations, nomination of candidates by political parties and nomination of polling agents by parties.

He said the innovations have also been helpful in reducing the level of litigation arising from the conduct of political parties.

“This is because now it’s an interaction between the party agents and the machines and anytime you logged in and out, there is a time stamp, so you can’t argue.

“If you argue, we’ll produce the evidence of what happened. And at 6p.m. on a fixed date, the portal automatically shuts down. If any party has any problem, it’s not the Commission,” he said.

On BVAS innovation, Yakubu said that the use of the technology in the Nigeria’s electoral system has come to stay and there was no going back.

He said that the technology had help to eliminated multiple accreditations that was observed in previous elections, increased public confidence in the outcome of elections and eliminated the use of the Incident Form.

“Another innovation that we introduced is the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. We are perhaps one of the few countries in the world that transmits polling unit level results in real time on election day.

“Proudly, I can say we are the first to introduce it in Africa,” he said.

Yakubu said that IReV has increased transparency in result management and helped to eliminate the falsification of results from polling unit level to the collation centres.

“We have deployed the IReV in 105 off-cycle and bye-election.

“We believe that the system is robust and we are taking additional measures to safeguard and fortify our web resources generally against threats of attack,” he said.

On inclusivity, Yakubu said that INEC has created a new Department for Gender and Inclusivity in the commission.

He added that within the limits of available resources, INEC has also provided assistive devices for Persons with Disabilities, such as braille ballot guide and magnifying glasses for the vision impaired and those living with Albinism.

Yakubu said going into the 2023 general election, the first concern was the insecurity in different parts of the country, compounded by thuggery during elections organised by some of the political actors.

“Elections are conducted by human beings. We worry about the security of our officials, voters and the materials to be deployed.

“Without them, we cannot conduct elections. We have spoken to the security agencies; they have assured us that the situation will improve before the elections. So, fingers crossed.

“Those who are supposed to secure the environment have assured us that they will secure the environment for us to conduct elections. Our responsibility is to conduct elections,” he said.

He added that INEC was concerned on the issue of fake news, but as a commission was did not support censorship, saying that it was deepening transparency and harmonising available opportunities to address fake news which has impact on elections.

“We believe that the antidote to fake news is greater transparency and openness and we have been demonstrating greater transparency and openness.

“The social media plays a very important role in voter education and deepening democracy.

“But it also has the potential of skewing the narrative with the wrong information that impugn the integrity of officials or seek to delegitimise the commission and the process before, during or after the elections.

“Publication of fake election results is a potential trigger for violence. What we have done is to continue to deepen our cooperation and relationship particularly with the organised social media,” Yakubu said.
