Nigeria @ 62: ADC Presidential Candidate lauds Nigeria’s fallen heroes

Dumebi Kachikwu, Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress(ADC), has lauded Nigeria’s fallen heroes who lost their lives while defending the integrity of the nation.

Kachikwu said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary.

According to him, to mark this day, two groups of people must be celebrated, first are our fallen heroes and those who are in the field defending our freedoms and way of life.

“For over a decade our nation has been at war and more often than not we forget the heroic sacrifices made daily by our men and women in uniform.

“They wage war that we may have peace. Our troops have defended other nations, maintained the peace in far flung lands and today have the task of defending our land.

“The second group are the Nigerian masses who are suffering in silence. They stay silent that we may have peace They suffer untold hardships as our economy gets worse, as job opportunities disappear, as our security situation worsens and as food prices escalate.

“These two sets of people are the true heroes of our nation. They maintain the silence of the grave in the face of hardship,” he said.

Kachikwu said that as Nigeria approached the 2023 general election it was important to remember these two sets of people and ensure conversations never depart from them.

He said that Nigerians and the government must focus on this two groups, sustain conversations around them and address concerns so that the labours and suffering of the nations fallen heroes, men and women in uniform and the masses were not in vain.

“He said that the Independence day anniversary should also be used to remember the sacrifices made by the nations forefathers for Nigeria to be free from colonial rule.

“We must remember those who died on both sides of the Nigerian Civil war that our nation may remain united.
“We must remember the poor masses who mostly live on one meal a day. We must remember our troops who are fighting a difficult war.

“If we do this, the silent majority will become the vocal majority and apathy to Nigeria and politics would no longer be an option,” he said.

Kachikwu cautioned Nigerians against trading their votes in 2023 general election for material things such as money, wrappers, Tshirts, face caps and food.

He also advised Nigerians against being used by politicians and political parties as instruments to campaign unjustly by constituting false crowd, supporters and followers.

He said that Nigerians needed to change the narratives and stay true to a just course of only campaign for the right candidate with a clear vision to rescue and restore the country.

According to him , Nigeria needs Nigerians, our troops need Nigerians support, millions of poor Nigerians need Nigerians voice and their vote to rescue and save our country.

“It is not therefore the amount of money,  hate speech, fake news or political thuggery that would make contestants emerge victorious during the elections,” he said.

The President and Founder of Living Stone Church Assembly, Bishop Jonas Katung has said former Secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal is not qualified to speak for Northern Nigeria Christians.

Bishop Kating stated this on Friday where he said Pentecostal bishops from northern Nigeria should be commended for meeting with the APC presidential candidat, Bola Tinubu.

He said the meeting provided them the opportunity to draw attention to the plight of christians in the region, and that Babachir Lawa was unqualified to condemn the meeting as he did not belong to the Pentecostal fold.

The cleric, who spoke in Jos said the recent comment made by the former SGF where he described the respected church leaders as fake bishops was mischievous.

He, however, questioned Lawal’s moral right to speak for Christians as, according to him, the former SGF was unceremoniously relieved of the position for conduct that was not in line with Christian teachings.

He said Lawal’s actions depicted how low he could go for his selfish ambition even if it meant smearing God’s anointed servants.

“Of course, Babachir Lawal, who does not belong to the Pentecostal fold, is in no way qualified to assess who a bishop is or question their call.

“As church leaders and concerned citizens, we as a group of Pentecostal bishops from northern Nigeria, the region which is most aggrieved by the same faith ticket decision of the APC, decided to engage with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the person who is at the center of the controversy, to express the concerns and fears of the Christian community not only in northern Nigeria but the country as a whole and to give him an opportunity to explain his decision.”

  • APC Ebonyi South senatorial Ticket: Appeal Court upholds Umahi’s candidacy

APC Ebonyi South senatorial Ticket: Appeal Court upholds Umahi’s candidacy

An Abuja Court of Appeal has confirmed, Governor David Umahi as the Senatorial candidate of Ebonyi South.

Princess Ann Agom-Eze’s suit against the governor’s emergence as the district’s senatorial candidate, was on Friday, rejected by the court.

Recall, following Umahi’s failure to clinch the APC presidential ticket, on Thursday, June 9, 2022, the party was said to have rescheduled a senatorial primary election for Ebonyi South, in which Umahi emerge as the winner.

The first election conducted was won by Umahi’s brother, Chief Austin Umahi, however, the runner-up of the election, Agom-Eze, frowned at the governor’s emergence as the senatorial candidate of the district.

Ago-Eze then took the issue before a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, and on Friday, July 22, 2022, the court disqualified Governor Umahi and averred that Agom-Eze, who was the second runner-up in the May 28, 2022 primaries, and should be allowed to contest the 2023 senatorial election.

Another election was later conducted on July 30, 2022. but Umahi was again declared the winner of the senatorial seat.

Agom-Eze then again challenged Governor Umahi’s emergence as the Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone candidate at a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki.

The court in August, recognised Agom-Eze as the senatorial candidate for the Zone.

However, the Court of Appeal in its judgement today, set aside the High Court’s decision and all its orders.

The Appellate Court also held that the High Court was wrong when it upheld Ann’s Counter-affidavit and failed to uphold the primary election of 9th June, 2022, whereat Governor Umahi was nominated as the APC Senatorial candidate, as the nomination was never challenged by anybody within 14 days as prescribed by section 285(9) of the 1999 Constitution.

The court in Abuja proceeded to grant all the reliefs sought by Governor Umahi and the APC in the trial court.

  • PDP bribery scandal takes new turn as NWC issues denial

PDP bribery scandal takes new turn as NWC issues denial

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP has denied bribery laced in housing allowance returned by some members of the party’s National Working Committee.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement signed by Hon Debo Ologunagba
    National Publicity Secretary.

TNG recalls the social media was awash late Thursday night with stories that six members returned a mysterious amount credited to their accounts as housing allowance.

Among those who have returned the alleged bribe are the Deputy National Chairman, South, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the National Women Leader, Prof Stella Effah-Attoe and the National Vice-Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Orbih.

Araphaja has returned N36 million paid to him while Effah-Attoe and Orbih each returned N28 million.

All claimed that the money paid to them from the party was suspicious.

The money was paid to them in the form of housing allowance.

There were also reports that the National Vice Chairman Southeast, Dr Alli Odefa, the National Vice-Chairman, Southwest Adagunobi-Oluwatukesi and the Deputy National Secretary, Hon Setonji Koshoedo have also returned their own portions of the money paid out to the party members.

The return of the money follows reports that the NWC members had been settled to overlook allegations of the misappropriation of the N10 billion collected as nomination fees from aspirants for elective political offices during the recent round of primaries.

Apparently to douse the tension generated over the returned strange money the PDP publicity scribe issued a denial saying:

“The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to misrepresenting reports in a section of the media alluding strange and unfounded motives to the Housing Allowance duly approved and paid to NWC members and staff of the Party

“The NWC has noted that this misleading report stemmed from an unfounded publication by a particular media outlet which suggested that the Housing Allowance, an entitlement duly approved and paid to national officials and staff of the Party amounted to bribery.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP states in an unequivocal term that no funds were paid into the account of any member of the NWC as bribe for any purpose whatsoever for that matter.

“To set the record straight, the Housing Allowance being referred to went through the Due Process of the Party in line with the Conditions of Service and Entitlement of the Staff and Principal Officers of the Party.

“If any individual, for any reason decides to return money duly approved and paid, such does not in any way suggest that the money was paid as bribe or indicate that it was illegitimate or unlawfully paid.

“A bribe is defined as “money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behavior of a person especially in that person’s performance as a public official…”. This is not the case in the payment of Housing Allowance duly approved for officials and staff of the Party.

“The PDP therefore urges all members, teeming supporters and the general public to disregard the report and misleading insinuation which are clearly designed to malign the PDP, cause disaffection and distract our Party from our mission to Rescue, Rebuild and Redirect our nation from the misrule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
