2023 Election: NSCDC pledges to provide support for INEC

The Yobe Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has pledged to provide support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards a hitch-free 2023 general election.

The State NSCDC Commandant, Mr Sa’idu Aliyu, stated this when he hosted the state INEC officials on a courtesy visit in his office on Thursday in Damaturu.

Aliyu said that the command would make adequate security arrangement before, during and after election to ensure that it was credible.

“I want to say that we are ready to apply all arsenals needed to provide security and safety for the election in the state,” he said.

Speaking, Alhaji Abatcha Bukar, the state INEC Administration Secretary, applauded the command for its role in ensuring smooth conduct of the 2019 general election.

He solicited for continuous support of the command for a successful 2023 general election.

Bukar presented a document containing the summary of registration areas and polling units in the state for the 2023 poll, to Aliyu for guidance.

Enugu traditional rulers pray, present ‘ofo’ to PDP guber candidate

The Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers has presented ‘ofo’, a traditional symbol of authority, to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Dr Peter Mbah.

The traditional rulers also jointly prayed for him at a consultative meeting between them and Mbah Campaign group on Wednesday in Enugu.

The Chairman of the council, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, said that Mbah had demonstrated his “great respect” for the traditional institution in holding a consultative meeting with the members.

According to Agubuzu, by deciding to hold the consultative meeting Mbah recognises that the bedrock of democracy is the people at the grassroots who are subjects of the traditional rulers.

“You will recall that on March 29, 2022 when there was tension in this state arising from the arguments for and against rotation of the office of governor we assembled here and issued a communiqué.

“In the communiqué, we unequivocally stated that it was the turn of Enugu East Senatorial District to produce our governor in next year’s governorship election.

“At that time, all eyes were on the PDP as the ruling party in the state even as we enjoined all political parties to pick their gubernatorial candidates from Enugu East Senatorial Zone.

“The emergence of Hon. Peter Mbah as the gubernatorial candidate of PDP is in keeping with the rotational principle advocated in our earlier communique,” he said.

Agubuzu also implored his colleagues to pray for his protection and to wish him success through “our joint presentation of ‘ofo” to him”.

“As traditional rulers, we must remain absolutely non-partisan in politics while advising our subjects to vote wisely for leaders who would bring peace, security, development and prosperity to our state and country,” he said.

Responding, Mbah expressed his profound gratitude to the traditional rulers for the prayers and handling over the collective “ofo’ to him, adding: “the great value I attach to what you have done to me today, cannot be lost by me”.

According to him, the ‘ofo’, which is a symbol of authority, also represents peace and justice.

“My virtues will represent and symbolise what you have done today. If the Almighty God answers our prayers and I become your governor, I will not abandon you.

“What you have done shows what our ancestors in the state want, as you people are close to them and you are the sole custodian of our culture and tradition,” he said.

Mbah also assured the traditional rulers that he would run a people-focused and development-focused administration when elected, adding that he would continue on the trajectory of rural community development, “in which Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had excel”.

“My administration will make Enugu State the preferred destination for business, tourism, industrialisation and technology hub within the Africa sub-region.

“We will also continue to build on the existing peace and security, as Enugu State remains the most peaceful state in the country. It is clear that without peace and security there will be no development and progress.

“We will accelerate youths’ employment to ensure peace and security within our communities as well as go ahead with our integrated local communities’ development master plan to ensure even development of the entire state.

“We will build new infrastructure in our communities such as roads, markets, electricity and water schemes to further open up the state and continue with the great work of our present governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is doing,” he said.

The PDP candidate also appealed to the traditional rulers to take the message home to their subjects that they had found who would deliver their development message and give them peace and security as well.

The meeting was attended by all traditional rulers in state, while Mbah came with his deputy, Mr Ifeanyi Ossai, the PDP Campaign Director-General in Enugu State, Chief Ikeje Asogwu and the state’s PDP Chairman, Chief Augustine Nnamani, among others.

Campaign: INEC urges candidates to shun vulger language

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe State, has cautioned political parties and their candidates against use of vulger language that could threaten peace during electioneering campaign.

The Head of Voter Education and Publicity of the Commission in the state, Nuhu Ibrahim gave the charge in a statement on Tuesday in Gombe.

He said electioneering campaign would start on Wednesday, Sept. 28, in accordance with the electoral calendar, stressing that it was important for political parties and their candidates to comply with the rules towards ensuring peaceful and rancour-free campaigns.

“Political parties and candidates are to ensure that campaigns are not “tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

“The use of slanderous language likely to provoke violent reaction or emotions, attack on opposition parties/candidates or their programmes, employment and equipping of armed groups and violent activities of any kind during campaigns are prohibited,” he said.

The INEC official advised political parties and candidates to comply with the limits on election expenses as contained in Section 88 of the Electoral Act 2022.

According to him, the Commission will deploy technologies and trained personnel to fast track effective tracking of campaign financing by parties and candidates.

He advised residents of the state who registered for Permanent Voter Card (PVC) between June 2021 and Jan. 14, 2022, to visit INEC’s offices to collect their PVCs to exercise their franchise.

2023: APC clears air on Presidential Campaign Council list

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) says the 422-member list released at the weekend is not conclusive.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media and Publicity of the council said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

He said the list contained only the directors, deputy directors, secretaries of directorates and other key stakeholders.

“Some of the nominees of our governors have emerged as part of the leadership, while others will soon emerge as members of the various directorates.

“No name is left out of the lists,” he said.

APC, PDP can’t stand ADC in 2023 poll -Kachikwu

Mr Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), presidential candidate, says the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot beat the party in 2023 election.

Kachikwu said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

He said that the two major parties stood no chance of winning as they have failed Nigerians.

“The country has continued to lag behind in all indices of development since 1999 when PDP assumed power after which it handed over to APC in 2015,” he said.

Kachikwu said that the indices of good governance anchored on the rule of law in Nigeria have remained negative since the return to civil rule in 1999.

He urged Nigerians to reinvent in the country by voting for ADC, saying that the party has the vision and the know-how to turn the fortunes of the country around.

The ADC presidential candidate urged Nigerians to vote wisely in 2023 in order to reclaim, revive and restore the positive destiny of Nigeria.

  • Atiku will get 65 per cent of Benue’s votes – Party chieftain

Atiku will get 65 per cent of Benue’s votes – Party chieftain

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) says the party’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will get 65 per cent of Benue State votes.

Mr Abraham Chila, who is a grassroots mobiliser expressed the optimism while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that in spite Gov. Samuel Ortom’s support for his Rivers counterpart, Gov. Nyesom Wike, in the power tussle within the PDP, Atiku would garner 65 per cent of the state votes.

Ortom had said that unless Wike was appeased,PDP would risk losing the state votes during the 2023 presidential election.

Chila said  regardless of whatever action Ortom would take, during next year’s general elections, PDP and Atiku would always win elections in the state.

He said that from 1999 to date PDP has become very entrenched in Benue.

He added that for the fact that PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu is from Benue, it made it imperative that nothing could change the voting pattern in the state.

“You may wish to know that my governor, Ortom, is also a candidate for the senatorial election in next year’s election. Interestingly, the presidential election and that of National Assembly come up the same day.

“So, with Gov. Ortom’s fate tied to that of Vice President Atiku Abubakar, it is impossible for PDP to get less than 65 per cent of the state total votes cast.

    “And with our son, Dr

Ayu as the national chairman, PDP has the bragging rights for the maximum votes from Benue State,” Chila noted.

Chila, who contested the party’s ticket for Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency, explained that being a predominantly agrarian state with more population in the rural communities, no other political party could achieve rural penetration more than PDP.

He expressed confident that with the security and economy challenges facing the country, including Benue, the state would vote for Abubakar who has the capacity to address the challenges.

“We need stability and security and Benue State voters know that the only man that can pull Nigeria back from the precipice is Abubakar.

“The former Vice President is not coming to the Presidency as a learner, but will bring his wealth of experience to bear on national reconstruction.”

On the calls by some PDP stakeholders on Ayu to resign, Chila said those making the calls were either mistaken or mischievous, saying Ayu emerged through a foolproof process that was not controverted.

He said that telling Ayu to quit when he had not committed any impeachable offence amounts to questioning the very rudiments of democracy.

“Ayu has not committed any offence. Therefore, anybody asking him to leave office is indirectly calling for the proscription of PDP, which is not attainable in a democracy.

“People should look beyond Ayu as an individual, he represents that party on account of the mandate freely given to him.

“If I may add, what would be the compensation for the North Central if Ayu resigns?

“The North Central has been making sacrifices for the growth and stability of PDP.

“Do we have to wait for 24 years before being considered for the presidential ticket, why must we throw away the consolation prize of national chairman?” Chila asked.

2023: Civil Defence to deploy 30,000 operatives

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is to deploy 30,000 operatives to ensure peace during the upcoming general elections in Nigeria.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation is billed for another general election, starting on Feb. 25 next year, when the president and vice-president will be elected.

A crowded field of 18 political parties are expected to field candidates, in a landmark election, viewed by analysts to be a three-horse race of the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Speaking at the flagship News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja on Sunday, the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, said the operatives would be deployed nationwide to maintain peace.

According to him, the NSCDC has perfected plans to deploy all resources needed to provide security during the election.

“The corps is poised fairly, and ready to apply all the arsenals needed to provide security and safety for the elections.

“We have an operations department of over 30,000 personnel but then we will also deploy others when the time comes.

“Normally we have the bulk of our people in operations and those who are in operations partake in election processes,” he said.

Audi said that the corps had also perfected plans to begin seminars and workshops in October to discuss the preparedness of the organization towards the general elections.

“We want to tell our people that if you go and involve yourself by becoming partisan you are on your own.

“There are certain things we have introduced in our Standard Operating Procedure — that once you go partisan and you are caught, you will face sanctions and you are on your own.

“So we are ready to partake in the election like I said because we are apolitical and we are going to provide a level-playing field for all citizens to be involved in the elections and exercise their franchise.”

Audi said that the NSCDC partook in election activities because it’s a member of the Inter-agency, Consultative Committee on Election Security.

“Police is the lead agency actually because it’s a fact that they are in charge of internal security but we have other services in that committee which includes the military, para-military and virtually all security agencies.

“We are ready and you know that our role as a security agency is supposed to be apolitical and neutral,” he said.

This is contained in a statement by Ms Titi Johnson, the Publicity Secretary, APC Diaspora Progressives Leaders on Saturday in Abuja.

Johnson said that the appointment was based on the past records of Omole.

According to her, the primary responsibility of the APC Diaspora Directorate will be to rally Nigerians in the Diaspora to support the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“Nigerians in the Diaspora have a lot to contribute to nation-building and many would love to return to their homeland to contribute to the transformational government of an Asiwaju presidency,” she said.
