No new registrant has been added to Voters’ Register – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has yet to add new registrants, captured at the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to the Voters’ Register for 2023 General Election.

INEC said this in a statement by Festus Okoye, its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee in Abuja on Thursday.
Okoye said that no new registrant would also be added to the register until the supplemental activities for their integration have been completed in line with the law.

“The attention of the commission has been drawn to a report of a press conference addressed by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) on the Register of Voters for the 2023 general election.

“The commission recognises and respects the right of citizens, either as individuals and groups, to demand explanation from public agencies, including INEC, and to hold them accountable.

“However, it is always important that caution is exercised so that such interventions do not unwittingly sow doubts in the public mind, thereby diminishing public confidence and trust in the electoral process,” he said.

Okoye said that Nigerians would recall that on July 31, the commission suspended the CVR to commence supplemental activities that would culminate in the integration of new registrants into the final register of voters for the 2023 General Election.

“It Is important to reiterate that no new registrant has yet been added to the Register of Voters for the 2023 General Election or will be included until these supplemental activities have been completed in line with the law.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we restate the main components of these activities.

“ First, the Commission is conducting a comprehensive Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) cleanup of the registration data by scrutinising every record.

“Based on the Electoral Act 2022, any record that does not meet all the criteria for inclusion as stipulated in Section 10, including the appearance in person by the registrant at the registration venue with proof of identity, age and nationality and our business rules requirements of adequate number of fingerprints and clear pictures will be invalidated.

“Further, in line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, after the ABIS and clean up, the Commission shall appoint a period of seven days during which the register will be published for scrutiny by the public for objections and complaints.

“Finally, it is only after the cleanup and claims and objections have been completed that the final register will be published,” he said.

Okoye said that INEC would continue to provide the public with updates on the progress made on the processes.

“The ABIS for the period of registration between Jan. 15 and July 31 is being concluded presently, and the outcome in terms of multiple and ineligible records will be made public.

“For instance, in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo, where the commission allegedly registered ineligible persons, 3,316 ineligible registrants have so far been invalidated and the process is still ongoing,” he said.

Okoye appealed to Nigerians to await the commission’s display of the register for claims and objections, so they can raise any concerns that they might have on the registration.

He reiterated that “ABIS was robust and would detect practically all ineligible records for removal.

“Nigerians should be reassured of the commission’s commitment to the credibility of the electoral process in Nigeria.

“We appeal for your support while we painstakingly deal with the cleanup of the register and other processes that will guarantee that the general election in 2023 is free, fair, credible and inclusive,” he said.

  • 2023 Election: Don’t allow religion to divide us, Sanwo-olu urges Nigerians

2023 Election: Don’t allow religion to divide us, Sanwo-olu urges Nigerians

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged Nigerians not to allow religious division, especially in respect to the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidential poll.

Sanwo-Olu gave the advice on Thursday in Ikoyi, at the 96th Anniversary Lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club , with the topic: ”Social Club and the Search for National Cohesion”.

He said that electing the next President of Nigeria should be about leadership, character, audacity to think and ability to think deep and solve problems.

According to him, the election of the right persons is not about religion, as there is nothing in the issue of a Muslim-Muslim Ticket of the APC Presidential candidacy.

“I am a Christian and my wife is a Christian but we know too well that it is not about religion.

“We have forgotten that in 2011, when Action Congress at that time gave a platform to Malam Nuhu Ribadu and his vice presidential candidate then was Mr Fola Adeola.

“It was a joint Muslim-Muslim ticket and we did not see any problem at that time.

“But suddenly, because there is a likelihood of this ticket emerging as a winner, people now want to divide us. We will say no because that is not who we are.

“It is about leadership. It is about character. It is about audacity to think. It is about the ability to be able to think deep and solve problems.

“We do not want to despair other candidates. We all know too well what their antecedents are. We all know too what their credentials are. But we know that as a nation, we need a strong launch pad. We need to think out of the box and be able to put our best foot forward,” he said.

The governor commended the leadership of the Yoruba Tennis Club for making the right choice of inviting the APC Vice Presidential candidate, Sen. Kashim Shettima as the guest speaker.

“We are celebrating 96 years now and let it be on record that by 2026 during our centenary celebration, by the grace of God, we will have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu coming here to celebrate as President on our centenary.

“By your grace and your support, I will still remain as your 15th Governor, coming here and celebrate in four years time and all of you will be here.

“We deserve the presidency. In Lagos we deserve it. Lagos requires it and it would be by the grace of God a bigger, better and stronger nation and state that all of you would be truly proud of to have been part of,” he said.

While delivering his lecture, the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, Sen. Kashim Shettima, said that there had been so much talk about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party.

Shettima said that Sen. Tinubu is a Muslim but his wife is not only a Christian, but a senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God as well.

“Some of Asiwaju’s children are Christians. How can you convince someone that Asiwaju is going to Islamise Nigeria when he did not Islamise his own family?,” he said.

He said that the party needed to take a review of the event that had played out in recent times to avoid a repeat of the bitter experience in 2015.

“Our ineptitude in the things we did not do well led this country to where we are heading now; otherwise we will have not gone into the hands of APC in the first place.

“We are not in the same place we were in 2015. We need to look at the variables that have changed and respond to these variables and dynamics accordingly.

“We need to remain hungry for power so that our adrenaline level will remain optimum and drive us towards attaining that goal.

“All countries in this world that have risen from the ashes of civil war, quarrels, and bitter clashes are countries that did genuine truth and reconciliation. I pray that we would realised that there is no half measure to victory in politics,” he said.

  • 2023: NUJ urges INEC to replicate level of credibility in Osun, Anambra, Ekiti elections

2023: NUJ urges INEC to replicate level of credibility in Osun, Anambra, Ekiti elections

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to replicate same level of credibility used in its previous elections in Osun, Anambra and Ekiti during the 2023 general elections.

Mr Sam Udekwe, Chairman, NUJ, Enugu State Council made the call while speaking with newsmen on Thursday in Enugu.

Udekwe said INEC should maintain higher degree of fairness, credibility and fairness as done during the isolated elections in Osun, Ekiti and Anambra, to ensure that people’s wishes counted in 2023 elections.

According to him, in the upcoming general elections in 2023, there are a lot of hope of higher credibility expected from the electoral body by the electorate.

“All over the world, elections are rated by some degrees of credibility and Nigeria is not exceptional.

“INEC recorded high credibility in their recent elections and I want them to employ same method to 2023 elections because there is improvement in the system,” he said.

He explained further that with the instrumentality of the electoral laws that had been enhanced with electronic inputs, it was going to be better, especially with the use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

“Where the rigging starts is from accreditation which BVAS has put a stop to an extent. I am hopeful we are going to have more credible, fairer and better elections in 2023.”

Udekwe, a staff of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), however, emphasised the need for INEC to decentralise Permanent Voters Card (PVC) collection offices/centres more, to allow people collect their PVCs without stress.

He said that INEC could develop a means of distributing the cards to people’s houses, stressing that the readiness of Nigerians’ participation in the forthcoming election was high and INEC should not be a stumbling block to it.

The chairman further advised Nigerians to collect their PVCs to vote candidates of their choice.

“I want to advise my fellow Nigerians to do away with exchange of money for their franchise, rather, vote who they believe will serve them better.

“It will be a colossal failure if we exchange our voting rights with peanuts but if anyone offers you money because there is hunger in the land, collect it and vote according to your conscience as it is going to be secret ballot system,” he advised

2023 Election : EU launches €39 million for SDGN programme

Ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, the European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment in launching, on Sept. 12, the sum of 39 million Euros towards the EU-Support Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU- SDGN).

The bloc made the commitment in a statement issued by its delegation on Saturday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

It stated that in supporting Nigeria’s electoral process the bloc has launched, on Sept. 12, a programme aimed at promoting transparent, inclusive and credible elections in the country.

According to the statement, the bloc’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms Samuela Isopi, says the programme tagged EU-SDGN Phase II, is a €39m initiative.

“Funded under the EU’s Neighbourhood Development and International Cooperation Instrument, over a five-year period.

“The overall objective of the EU-SDGN is to foster a functioning pluralistic, inclusive, participatory and representative democracy in Nigeria. Inclusive, participatory and transparent elections are a pre-requisite for a strong democracy.

“Ahead of the 2023 General Election, Nigeria is at a pivotal moment that allows the country to take important steps to consolidate democracy and strengthen the electoral process.

“The EU continues to partner with Nigeria in the on-going reform process with a view to strengthening the capacity to conduct well-managed elections and with ample participation of all Nigerians.

“For this to happen, all must contribute, from the key institutions to the political parties and candidates, from media to civil society,” said Isopi.

“Empower Media, including new media, to promote fair and ethical coverage of the electoral process and combat hate speech and disinformation.

  • Obasanjo will support Atiku in 2023 election – Spokesman

Obasanjo will support Atiku in 2023 election – Spokesman

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Spokesman for the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Atiku Abubakar’s Campaign Organisation, has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo would support Atiku in 2023 election.

Aniagwu, who doubles as Delta’s Commissioner for Information, stated this while fielding questions from newsmen on Wednesday in Asaba.

Aniagwu was recently appointed as the spokesman for the Atiku Campaign Organisation ahead of the open campaigns to drive the Atiku/Okowa ticket to fruition come 2023.

According to Aniagwu, former President  Obasanjo, who Atiku worked with as vice president between 1999 and 2007, saw his capabilities and Atiku helped  him to reposition the country’s economy.

He said that though they might had their differences with regards to politics, Obasanjo still supported Atiku’s presidential bid in 2019.

“I will like to refer to 2019, former president Obasanjo supported Atiku in that election. Atiku was more or less Obasanjo’s candidate, so if he supported him that much, I don’t think anything has changed between 2019 and now.

“Again, former President Obasanjo, is a man we have enormous respect for.

“I am confident that the same God that led him to support Atiku in 2019 is still alive and will lead him to know that Atiku has what it takes to rescue our country from where we are at the moment.

“We  believe that Obasanjo is a man who meant well for our country, he has demonstrated this in so many ways. He saw the ability of Atiku in 1999, and he chose him against all odds to become his running mate.

“So, we are quite optimistic that former President Obasanjo, will in the interest of our country and in line with his patriotic ideals support Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2023 general election,” Aniagwu said.

Aniagwu said that in spite of the many challenges facing the country Atiku would “walk the talk.”

Atiku  he said, recognised the fact that there were little disturbances within the party, and would lead the team to address them.

Aniagwu said that Atiku would put on the table the vast experience garnered over the years from the private and the public sectors to make a difference to restore hope to Nigerians.

He said that Atiku was worried about brain drain as Nigerians leave the country in droves, adding that those in the diaspora would be willing to return when things begin to work for the country.

According to Aniagwu,  top on Atiku’s agenda is the need to efficiently and effectively manage Nigeria’s diversity, which he believes has been poorly managed over the years.

He said his principal would work with every Nigerian, irrespective of geographical divide, tribe, religion, political divide and with every capable Nigerian to fix the economy and address the security challenges.

“This he has demonstrated when he had fortunate experience of working with former President  Olusegun Obasanjo, a man who believes in the development of this country.

“Atiku assisted Obasanjo in recognising even from diaspora, Nigerians with the ability to make a difference. This he will replicate and double the effort to put the country on the path of winning ways if elected president.”

He said that Atiku had a blueprint called, ”My Covenant With Nigeria,” which had been articulated to restore the country to the path of progress in the shortest time if he becomes president come 2023.

Aniagwu, said that Atiku was already working on a number of bills, particularly to address issues of corruption and  devolution of power.

According to him, Atiku has set all machinery in motion as he will be meeting with different stakeholders and the business community in Lagos to listen to them.

“Atiku said that as soon as he is elected, even before being sworn in, the list of his ministerial nominees will be ready for scrutiny to ensure that the right persons are recruited to restore the economy of our country.

“So, there is a whole lot that the Atiku/Okowa ticket represents, his major goal is to bring back values and make people have hope again in our country that is blessed naturally but mismanaged by man.”

Aniagwu said that his principal was happy about  the vibrancy exhibited by the youth, adding that their current interest in politics would help to change lots of things in the way the country is managed.

“Atiku believes that the vibrancy of the youth  will add color and the docility on the part of politicians would be a thing of the past,” Aniagwu added.
