AfDB President, Adesina, pulls out of 2023 presidential race

Dr Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), says he will not run for the post of president in the 2023 general elections.

Adesina, who said this in a statement on Tuesday, said he was focused on the mission of supporting the accelerated development and economic integration of Africa.

According to him, I have been extremely humbled by several calls from Nigerians at home and abroad that I should consider running for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I am very touched by all who have gone to great extent, with such huge sacrifices of their own volition to consider me worthy to be proposed for potential consideration.

“The coalition groups of youth, women, farmers, physically challenged and well-meaning Nigerians that have done this have expressed their genuine free will.

“They also expressed their political right, freedom of expression and association for my consideration, with the interest of Nigeria at heart.

“While I am deeply honoured, humbled and grateful for all the incredible goodwill, kindness and confidence, my current responsibilities at this time do not allow me to accept to be considered.

“I remain fully engaged and committed to the mission that Nigeria, Africa and all the non-African shareholders of the AfDB have given me for Africa’s development,’’ he said.

There have been reports in some sections of the media that Adesina will join the 2023 presidential race.

When we started discussing with the G-7, the seven governors that wanted to defect to the APC, I was holding nocturnal meetings with Amaechi and Governor Nyako of Adamawa State until we got five of them to move to our party, and that was the game-changer.

“And for you to understand how difficult it is, imagine Amaechi of Rivers State from the same South-South with incumbent President Jonathan.

“He made the sacrifice to move to our party. It was a game-changer. This is part of the reason President Buhari loves Minister Amaechi till tomorrow,” El-Rufai said.

  • 2023: I will win APC presidential ticket – Fayemi

2023: I will win APC presidential ticket – Fayemi

The Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Gov. of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday, expressed confidence in winning the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Primary Election and emerging as the party’s flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election.

Fayemi, who made the declaration during his presidential campaign tour in Maiduguri, said that he was not aversed to allowing all presidential aspirants from across the country to vie for the APC ticket, pointing out that there’re competent Nigerians in all parts of the country.

“Esteemed leaders and members of our great party, we are once again in the throes of another national electoral cycle at which Nigerians across the length and breadth of the nation will be called upon to designate their preferred choice for the leadership of our beloved country.

“As can be expected, our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will be a key factor and actor in the elections.

“And that is as it should be given that we are the ruling party at the federal centre, and are responsible for governing 22 states in the federation.

“Easily, we are the most national of parties. We also remain the most sought-after political association in the land.

“It will not be an exaggeration, and I know most of you will agree as well,
that given our present preponderance in the national political system, the
forthcoming elections will be very much about us as a party as about anything else.

“Nigerians reposed considerable trust in us when they voted us into office in 2015 and renewed our national mandate in 2019. That trust also came with and continues to carry enormous responsibility that we have tried, even in the race of various odds, to discharge as faithfully as possible.”

He added that: “As it is, all things considered, we are the party to beat in 2023.

“As a foundation member, and one of the many actors who worked tirelessly to help create the APC out of a coalition of like-minded parties and interests united by a progressive and forward looking to national commitment, unity and transformation, I was immeasurably proud of
the zeal with which our cadres embraced the party’s agenda for change and renewal.

“And we were fortunate to be blessed from the outset with a leadership group who left no stone unturned to ensure that we went into election as a united force that could be trusted by Nigerians and which had to be
    reckoned with by our competitors.

“To the credit of our party and His Excellency, President Muhammadu
Buhari, we have deliberately sought to make multiparty political competition in Nigeria less uncivil and much cleaner.

“We have also successfully ensured that the voices of citizens as the electorate count more than ever before. Edo and Anambra states are testimonies to the gallant effort that our President and leader has personally championed to make the national political system saner and more reflective of the true and genuine will of the people.

“We have every reason to be proud and to hold our heads high for these and other achievements. But we have, however, also been confronted with differing magnitudes challanges which are not always of our
making, that have either obstructed us or even thwarted some of our noble plans.

“Not least among these challenges is the security situation in the country, a problem we inherited and which has continued to be a
source of immense worry for all Nigerians, rightly so. The security question is one that must be topmost in our range of priorities.

“Added to this are adverse domestic pressures and external shocks on the economy that have affected our quest massively to dent unemployment and overcome some of its deleterious effects on the populace, especially our teeming population of young people.

“Esteemed import of the members foregoing of is the simple: APC, While the we can be proud of the road we have travelled since 2015, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels as a party or be complacent about anything.

“It is imperative that we openly and honestly acknowledge the important national tasks ahead and develop a coherent and comprehensive plan that can enable us to confront them.

“This we must do by resolutely learning lessons of experience. We should also be ready to mobilise ourselves for the urgent and necessary task of rebuilding the hope of our compatriots both in Project Nigeria and in our ability as a party.”

The governor said he knew the nooks and crannies of the country and had served APC faithfully, and believes that the majority of the party delegates will vote for him to emerge the party’s flagbearer.

“I’m very confident of winning, I’m very very comfortable in the APC, I’m a foundation member of the APC and I know the nooks and crannies of this country.

“I have served the APC faithfully, I was the first Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and in that capacity, I served all my colleagues that were members of the Governors Forum then.

“Now that I’m the Chairman of the entire Nigeria Governors Forum, I have also gained the trust and confidence of all Governors in ensuring that I defend, protect and promote Nigeria in all spheres.

“This job that I seek is about improving the condition of the ordinary Nigerians and it’s an opportunity to build on the gains of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and also to address the gaps,” Fayemi said.

On the clamour by some APC leaders to zone the presidency to the south, Fayemi warned that competence must not be sacrificed on the altar of zoning, but want every part of the country to have a sense of belonging in governance.

The governor stated that he’s a bridge builder and stressed the need for inclusivity in the governance of the country.

“Nigeria is a diverse country, there’re competent people from all parts of Nigeria. My role has always been bridge-building and unifying in Nigeria and I believe that Nigerians of diverse competencies come from all parts of Nigeria, they can throw their hat into the ring.

“But when you have a multicultural, multi-religious divided society, you also need measures to build trust and confidence in the country, so that everybody can feel a sense of ownership and a sense of belonging.

“Zoning must never undermine competence and zoning must never be anti-democratic,” Fayemi stressed.

  • Things I will do differently if elected president – Saraki

Things I will do differently if elected president – Saraki

Former President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki has said he will bring his experience over the years to bear and do things differently than he has done before if elected president in the 2023 general election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Saraki, who is vying for the presidential ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 presidential election, said this when he interacted with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

He revealed that his desire of becoming Nigeria’s President is to rediscover the country and make it great for the children and generation yet unborn.

He said, however, that joining the government as Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 made him realise the limitless possibilities for service through government.

He said that also made him realise how political power in the hands of a committed, competent and courageous leader could solve real problems and uplift the destiny of a nation and its people.

Saraki said that motivated him to contest and win the election as the Governor of Kwara in 2003, leaving the state better than he met it after eight years of service.

Saraki, was served as Governor of Kwara from 2003 to 2011, said that as a senator, he was able to rise above ruinous partisanship and challenged the massive scam perpetrated under the cover of fuel subsidy.

“As Senate PresidentSenate President, I defended the integrity of the National Assembly, sometimes, at great personal cost,” he said.

The former Senate President said that in all the positions he occupied, he was driven by the deep conviction to serve, to help, to proffer solutions and to leave behind a legacy of courage, hard work and unyielding commitment to making a difference.

“I will do everything to protect the lives and properties of every Nigerian and everyone that live within our borders.
“I will ensure that all our men and women in uniform are well-trained, are well-paid and are well-equipped.

“I will work every single day as if it were my last. There will be no excuse for the justification of failure. This is what will make the difference,” he said.

Saraki also pledged to diversify the economy to raise the revenue from the non-oil sectors to the same level as the country currently earned from oil.

“As long as there are still people in this country who believe that they can break the laws of Nigeria with impunity; who think that crime has no consequences, then the job is not done.

“And this is why I want to be President because I will ensure strict compliance with the rule of law and guarantee consequences for crime.

“As long as we still import tilers, plumbers and electricians from neighbouring countries, then the job is not done.

“And this is why I want to be President because I will collaborate with the industries, and train one million of our youths in technical and vocational skills each year,” he said.

He said that 65 million Nigerians still live in slums in cities and urban centres, promising to deliver half a million affordable housing units every year to low-income earners and eliminate urban slums.

The former senate president also promised to invest massively in skills, cloud computing, data analytics, programming and other such in-demand skills to drive innovation and competitiveness among youths.

Saraki also promises to create the Nigeria Creative Industry Initiatives to protect leadership positions on the African continent and position Nigeria to be a global leader in the cultural production economy.

“As long as our university lecturers still have reasons to embark on strike; as long our universities still rank outside the top 1000 in the world, then our job is not done.

“And this is why I want to be President, because I will ensure that our universities and higher education institutions are competitive and well-funded, adopting models and approaches that have served the most successful higher education systems in the world.

“ As long as some of our best and brightest brains still relocate to other countries to find fulfilment, then our job is not done.

“And this is why I want to be President because I will develop targeted incentives to reverse the brain drain and keep our professionals in the country,” he said.

Saraki said that his experience at the executive level and at the highest legislative institution of the country made him a unique asset in democratic leadership at a time that called for consensus building, cooperation and for compromise.

“I know how business works. I know how the government functions. And I know how the legislature operates. This diverse experience stands me out.

“And I will bring the experience to bear in getting the most critical constituencies behind the tough decisions that we must take if Nigeria must survive,” he said.

Saraki promised to be a president for all, a bridge between the young and the old, a bridge between the private sector and the public sector.

“I will be the bridge between Muslims and Christians.I will be the bridge between the north and the south. Because I am the Nigerian for all Nigerians,” he said.

  • 2023: BUHARI, OSINBAJO & RENO’S FUNDAMENTAL EMPTINESS

    2023: BUHARI, OSINBAJO & RENO’S FUNDAMENTAL EMPTINESS

    By Sen. Olusola Adeyeye

This is a rejoinder to Reno Omokri’s piece of the above title published in his column (‘THE ALTERNATIVE’) on the the backpage of ThisDay newspaper of Tuesday, the 3rd of May, 2022.

I like Reno. Even though we are on different ideological pages, I love his energy and commitment to the Nigerian national cause. He’s an example of how I want young people to engage with Nigeria. When I sit with young people in my orbit or talk with them in any setting, I keep repeating that they cannot afford to just be spectators in our national affairs. The men and women who helped birth the nation from colonialism were young people who answered the call of duty. There is no time to stand and stare!

In his piece, Reno missed two fundamental truths about Nigerian politics. The first is that if the establishment does not want you, you can never win the presidency. The second is religion as a factor in Nigerian political outcomes is overrated, especially at the national level. Yes, the establishment uses it when convenient, but, when it matters, realpolitik always trumps religion.

Nigeria is not a land of political revolution. We have been caught in the web of the ‘Class of 1966’ like since forever and they are still in charge. They determine who is president, irrespective of parties. Buhari, for good or ill, has reshaped the establishment platform to be more pro-North. He may have done it deliberately or it may just be something that has developed naturally under his watch. Whichever is the case, it is today our reality.

Of course, the popular wisdom is that religious sentiments determine the outcomes of national political contests, especially for the presidency – at the party and general election levels. But the historical facts do not support this. What history tells us is that any candidate of any religious background can be sold successfully nationally by the establishment once they determine he or she is the one they want there.

So, Omokri’s attempt to aggressively launder the now emergent falsehood that Osinbajo is a Christian fundamentalist unsellable in the Muslim North will not fly. He’s only trying to scrape his way through a barrel to a ready-made answer. In fact, the fundamental emptiness of his position can be seen in his attempt to compare Osinbajo to Isa Pantami. I mean, isn’t that the height of skullduggery? Ordinarily such poppycockery does not belong in the realm of even quasi-intelligent discourse; but, in Nigeria, it’s par the course. When we discuss politics, we throw in the kitchen and the toilet sinks and religion is the odious perfume we smell everywhere. But, as I have implied, the establishment does not think that way.

If the North thought Osinbajo a problem on religious grounds, he wouldn’t have been accepted as the Vice President to a Buhari as President. What they saw was a man who was a vital intellectual backbone of the Tinubu machine and the one who ran the biggest programme (through the courts) that created the Tinubu mystique. Surely, when the Lagos State Government repeatedly beat the Federal Government at the Supreme Court, the establishment had no choice than to notice the genius behind the string of legal victories- Prof Yẹmí Osìnbàjò.

When Reno says that Buhari’s political foot soldiers in the core North are united behind Tinubu, we simply tick that off as an error of assessment. The reality is that those he refers to as Buhari’s political foot soldiers are showing Tinubu everyday with action that they are not with him. Let him name one Buhari foot soldier in Tinubu’s camp and I will name a hundred that are not there. When Buhari candidly said that the presidency is not for sale to the highest bidder, wise citizens paid attention.

Yes, Tinubu has the structure, he has amassed the money and is already throwing it around left, right and centre, but the truth is that many are just fleecing him at the moment. Many signals within the party and within the establishment indicate he is on a hiding to nothing. Many see Tinubu as a greedy blackmailer who must be kept away from Aso Rock because he has the capacity to create an entirely different political patronage structure that can alienate the ‘Class of 1966’.

Incidentally, Tinubu went full throttle to politically terminate Ambode when the latter tinkered with the patronage structure in Lagos. As far as the establishment are concerned, Tinubu has been amply rewarded with the free rein they’ve given him over Lagos and its purse strings. Giving him Aso Rock is class suicide for the establishment.

We have seen the establishment flying the idea of parachuting Jonathan in as the consensus candidate of the APC, but it’s a bridge too far. We have been hearing of the attempt by some top members of the establishment to draft in Godwin Emefiele and now we see that he has actually picked up the APC Expression of Interest and Nomination form. Of course, that is quite troubling because the corruption writ-large in his candidacy is brazen. I wouldn’t want to believe that our party has degenerated to the level that they can openly slap Nigerians in the face with the candidacy of a serving Central Bank Governor. So, I still believe the real battle is among three other aspirants that include Osinbajo.

A lot of people don’t know that Professor Osinbajo faced very stiff opposition in 2019 from people who didn’t want him to return as part of the reelection ticket with Buhari. At the head of those opposed to him returning as Vice President was the late Abba Kyari who was said to have been working closely with Tinubu at the time. Buhari had to sternly tell off the lobbyists, insisting he was happy with Osinbajo and would run with him. Osinbajo as Vice President today is a strong indication that Buhari thinks him worthy of succeeding him in 2023. He could have easily replaced him prior to the election of 2019.

For those who still think Buhari has no favourite amongst the candidates, they need to read between the lines. When in January he was asked in a Channels Television interview by Maupe Ogun to name his favourite presidential candidate, he responded: “I won’t tell you my favourite for 2023, he may be eliminated if I mention. I better keep it a secret.” He wasn’t joking. The comment is revealing. It tells us he was aware of the intense jostling for the position going on within our party. It tells us he had someone in mind already and that person isn’t a party Goliath. For a man who knows what Osinbajo has endured as Vice President, he knew what he was talking about. Of course, the only thing is that he has not expressed his preference to Osinbajo himself.

Though Buhari can appear aloof, he appreciates loyalty. If Osinbajo works hard to win him over and Buhari helps make the case with the Northern establishment that Osinbajo is the best bet for Nigeria, they will vote him overwhelmingly. For Buhari, he must see the overwhelming benefit to him and his legacy if he endorses Osinbajo. It would prove that he is a true statesman and a wise and methodical leader of men. He should be proud that for the first time a Nigerian Vice President will succeed his principal.

Osinbajo knows that a lot is riding on his candidacy. He knows that he presents young Nigerians and the progressive forces, North and South, their best opportunity to win back the country and set it on a confident future where all citizens will feel proud to identify with our national aspirations in healthy competition with the best in the world. He knows there is nothing partisan about true national development, which is why he is committed to making Nigeria work for every Nigerian, no matter their ethnic group or faith and no matter where they live and work. He knows that as the President, if given the opportunity, he has to rapidly build upon the foundations laid at a time of enormous difficulties for our republic.

Omokri is analytical but he clearly does not understand the game of thrones. Contrary to what he opined, methinks that the majority of the northern governors will bend towards the candidate that President Buhari endorses. Buhari did not win the affection of the North through these Governors. Rather, many of them rode on Buhari’s coattail to ascend into office. To assert that even Buhari cannot stop Tinubu in the North is the height of sophistry.

I have repeatedly said that Osinbajo cannot totally separate himself from the perceived shortcomings of the Buhari Government. I find the accusation a bit lame that Osinbajo failed to distance himself from PMB. The constitution is clear about who is the ‘driver’ of the Nigerian vehicle. To his credit, even Tinubu has not disowned Buhari publicly.

However, writers paid by Tinubu would naturally project Osinbajo as the architect and cornerstone of every shortcoming the current Government. Meanwhile, it will be lost on them that the Buhari Presidency is an APC Government. How many times did the National Leader of the APC speak to the derelictions of the Government of his party?

The only period when Buhari was away was when people came to appreciate Osinbajo’s leadership qualities. Nigeria needs a man who must combine a tender heart with a tough mind. Yemi Osinbajo epitomises this combination.

2023 Election: Ebonyi PDP holds ward delegates congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ebonyi chapter, said it had held its ward delegates congresses across the 171 wards in the state.

Mr Chika Nwoba, PDP’s Public Relations Officer in Ebonyi, who briefed newsmen in Abakaliki, said the exercise was held in all the wards of the 13 local government areas, adding the preparation for a seamless exercise had been perfected by the party.

He said that the local government returning officers sent from the National Secretariat of the PDP arrived in the state late and moved down to the various LGAs for the conduct of the exercise.

“Officials from the national party secretariat who came for the conduct of the three-man delegate congress arrived the state an hour or two ago.

“They briefed the party members who were at the party secretariat to receive them where they displayed the result sheets and materials for conduct of the exercise before leaving for the respective LGAs.

“The exercise is ongoing as I brief you now; it is our wish that may be in few hours from now they must have concluded and returned the outcome to the party’s national secretariat,” Nwoba said.

He dismissed alleged conduct of parallel ward congresses in the state, adding that the party was ‘one big family.’

He said that the officials who came to conduct the exercise were duly accredited by the national leadership before coming to Ebonyi.

He said: ” I’m not aware that anybody distributed any material that is different from the one that was just displayed a few hours ago; so, if anybody is in possession of material before now, I may not be aware.

“But, the ones who came and displayed the materials they came with are the authentic ones and each of the 13 returning officers came with result sheets for an LGA of coverage.”

He added that the 13 returning officers interfaced with the five-man state ad hoc Electoral Committee before departing to their respective LGAs, adding that the party was confident that all officials involved in the exercise were working to achieve resounding success.
