2023: Why zoning of presidency is undemocratic – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has argued against zoning the 2023 presidency to a particular region of the country, stressing that it is undemocratic and should be discouraged.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Chairman of SDP, Delta Chapter, Mr Oke Idawene made this position known on Tuesday in Abuja, saying that his party is opposed to zoning.

Idawene said the SDP was not for zoning but for competence, adding that it was time “we stopped regional tendencies“ in the country.

He said that Nigeria is one, saying that no matter the situation, the country would not disintegrate, adding that it would be great with the support of all and by God’s grace.

“Let us elect a leader who is a true Nigerian both in body, soul and spirit, so that at the end of the day, we can say Nigeria is going forward not backwards.

“Enough of us being a laughing stock, enough of retrogression, it’s time to move forward, SDP is anti- zoning, we believe in competence.

“For the Southern leaders, am from the South, if you want the presidency in 2023, I call on you to lobby, power is not given for free, it is taken, and it is a collective responsibility,” Idawene said.

He advised political leaders in the zone to leave their comfort zones and go up north to lobby, giving reasons why the south should produce the country’s next president come 2023.

Idawene, speaking with NAN, added that every Nigerian was qualified to run for the presidency irrespective of regions, ethnicity and religion.

On Nigeria’s unity, he appealed to all to support the unity and development of the country.

Idawene assured Nigerians that the country would not disintegrate, appealing to secessionists to stop the agitations and blood shedding.

“IPOB, I beg you to stop the killings, the South-East needs peace, no man runs from his house because there is trouble, let us all come together and sort Nigeria out, this should be seen as our responsibility,” he said.

He commended the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for experimenting with electronic voting at the recently held Delta Isoko South Constituency 1 election.

“The Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) was used and there was no election rigging in that election.

“For the first time in Nigeria, I went for an election where until the election morning, the collation officers were not known, and the voting pattern was clear, there was no fictitious vote, and we had genuine votes.

“To this end, I think we should give INEC all the support for electronic voting and collation of election results.

“It is only then that we can get genuine leadership and know that Nigeria is tilting towards democratic tendencies” he said.

He expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing INEC to do its job unhindered in the state.

Idawene called on politicians and in particular the National Assembly to support INEC to adopt electronic voting come 2023.

“And I want to say that we all owe it as a duty to stand behind INEC and re-write the narrative, so that at the end of the day, we will have a Nigeria where our votes count, where we can say we have a future ahead of us.

The Urhobos, who say it is their turn to produce the next governor of Delta state, are apparently not sitting on their oars.

Through a group, Delta Central 23 (DC-23), they formed and made Chief Ighoyota Amori its national chairman, they have been going all over the state on sensitisation, mobilisation and selling of the idea of a Delta State Governor of Urhobo extraction to all.

All the major candidates who are Urhobo men (no woman so far), are members and all, we are told, are agreed that whoever emerges the candidate at the end of the day will be fully supported by the rest.

The campaign, the group is selling to all is: it is the turn of Delta Central to produce the governor of the state: Its only fair and equitable, a fitting reciprocity of Delta Central’s magnanimity in 2007 by allowing the rotation principle despite their overwhelming majority.

Given Delta Central’s humongous voting power and their owning more than 60 percent of the population figure in Delta state, it is ordinarily a given that this senatorial zone can produce a governor with little assistance of other zones if it so chooses.

But the reality on ground is that this is Nigeria and abracadabra politics reigns.

Like the situation, nationally where the north controls the deciding votes that do not reflect the reality of geography and ecology, hamlets in riverine communities return magical figures.

The four or so riverine local government areas of the state have in times past posted voting figures that even the most imaginative magician cannot conjure: figures that unbelievably almost doubled the entire votes of the Urhobos.

In a general election, therefore, whoever controls access to the rivers and riverine votes becomes the go to person. It is perhaps based on this that Delta Central has been threading carefully by attempting to carry everybody along in its quest to produce the governor of the state come 2023 general elections.

Our attempt today is to look at the plethora of aspirants who are currently trying to sell themselves to their parties as the ones who should be considered as the candidates, the flag bearer of their parties.

Our emphasis, however, in this analysis today will focus on only the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In no particular order, we will discuss the aspirants and their chances.

At the end, there will be pointers as to who, if the primaries of the PDP were to hold today will be the top three aspirants.

    OLOROGUN KENNETH GBAGI

The first to throw his hat into the ring is Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, a serial contestant for the position since 1999.

He prides himself as a former minister of state for education under President Goodluck Jonathan, during the interim government.

He was minister for six months but failed to be reappointed when President Jonathan was formally elected in 2011.

To his credit, nevertheless, within the six months he was minister, he was able to get approval for a federal government secondary school to be located near his hometown, Oginibo.

He also secured and set in motion a N100 million renovation of Urhobo College in Effurun, near Warri.

He describes himself as an industrialist but he is more known for his Robinson Plaza shopping Plaza complex and for his hotel at PTI junction, Effurun.

He also describes himself as a criminologist and lawyer. To his credit, he has tried his hands at various enterprises around the Warri-Effurun axis most of which are moribund; like the now abandoned, former Great Ogboru owned warehouses as you drive out of Effurun to Sapele, which Chief Gbagi tried to turn into a water factory and failed, amidst other ventures.

Born poor, he came into wealth at a very young age, before he was 30 from a source most people are not privy.

Among his supporters, there is the feeling that his flaunted association with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida will swing the ticket to him.

Whether the three contending groups in Delta PDP can be ordered by these leaders, outside Delta state, is something not open to debate.

In the run up primaries to the 2015 governorship election held in Asaba, in which he also contested, Olorogun Gbagi scored only two votes.

He perhaps has learnt from his previous experiences and is determined this time to make a good show at it.

He is today the most visible, in the media; the one who has consulted with the leaders and potential delegates the most.

Nevertheless, against him are the fact that he is lone ranger, tolerated by some of the leaders in the state but not completely trusted by them.

He is said to be stingy. But more damaging to his campaign is the incidence at his hotel where he paraded some of his workers naked, including a pregnant married woman, who he accused of stealing from him; and posting their naked photos on the internet.

Civil society organisations and women groups have since dragged him to court over this.

Though the hoopla which greeted this and his being declared wanted by the `police in Delta state have all but died down, this incidence and the fact that he is accused too of refusing to pay his workers their due, always, may further dent his chances among the general populace who before now, some say, view his ambition with suspicion.

    OLOROGUN DAVID EDEVBIE

Olorogun David Edevbie, a strong ally and indeed, the rumoured candidate of Chief Ibori himself, ordinarily should have been the front runner for Okowa’s seat.

Of all those in the race today, he is the one with the most pedigree in governance and management. He has been an active participant in the corridors of power in the last 21 years.

He was brought into active politics by James Ibori when he was governor of the state. He was recruited from the United Kingdom where he worked as an investment banker or so.

For eight years or so, he was the commissioner for finance, a position that made him very powerful as the chief dispenser of the favours which Ibori allegedly doled out to his supporters. He decided who got what and when. He was then seemingly apolitical and behaved almost like an expatriate. But he had the full confidence of the governor who protected him from all the political hawks.

He was thereafter the private secretary to the late President Musa Yar’Adua and was until recently the Chief of Staff to Governor Okowa. He is the kind of candidate, where he from Lagos state, could have easily gotten the nod to run for the office.

Not a few hated his guts and most politicians in the state are quick to say that he is a very arrogant fellow. But all that seems to have changed as some of those who used to hate his guts are today seen associating with him and promoting his aspiration.

His absence from the state for sometime at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic was at first interpreted as a subtle withdrawal from the race only for him to launch a forceful comeback which has catapulted him to the top ranks of the aspirants.

Nevertheless, unconfirmed reports from various sources among the Ijaws, indicate that the Ijaws would rather do anti party voting than vote for him.

His offence is not clear but some senior Ijaw politicians who spoke with Africa’s fastest rising online news platform, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), appear serious.

A senior political leader also confided that there is a lot of pressure on Chief Ibori, whether out of envy or the fear that an Edevbie government would not be a government as usual, open to looting, to reconsider backing him.

To close observers, however, should Ibori withhold support for him, his political ambition, will come crashing. This is because most of those who support him now, his opponents claim, do so on the impression that he is Ibori’s anointed candidate. Be that as it may, David Edevbie is one of the front runners.

    THE GOLDEN BOY

James Ojadovba Augoye is surprisingly not a surprising front runner for the candidacy of the People Democratic Party ticket.

His anointing dates as far back as when the permutations and calculations for a possible successor to Senator Okowa began in the compromises and horse trading which solidified Okowa’s ascendency as governor of Delta in 2015. The trick was, he shared political sonship with Ifeanyi Okowa.

Recall, that it was former Information Minister, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, who spearheaded the acceptance of Governor Okowa in Delta Central and indeed took on the task of selling him to the voting Delta state populace in the 2014-2015 pre election season almost against the grain in the then ruling party. That was how Professor Oyovbaire became the governor’s godfather.

James Augoye was Oyovbaire right hand man, his man Friday who worked tirelessly to ensure that the votes turn out for Okowa especially in the two Okpe local government areas.

He was fittingly rewarded with the juicy commissionership of the ministry of works. To his credit, and the acclaim of some, he discharged the office well and most credit him with being the brain behind the attempt to fix roads in the state.

In fact, his supporters trumpet him as deputy road master! They say that if Governor Okowa today claims to be the road master, then his works commissioner who did the actual work should take most of the credit. In effect, they say that Augoye is a fit and competent loyalist to take over from Okowa.

Governor Okowa, insiders have noted, was favourably disposed to an Augoye candidacy. For three reasons: he was considered a loyalist, he had showcased his competency and then there is the promises and seeming agreement with Professor Oyovbaire to have a say in who succeeds him as governor.

But that was before the bubble burst. Okowa’s ruffling of the PDP rotation agreement in the state had set him against his perceived godfather, Professor Oyovbaire and all the Urhobo leaders who had supported him to become governor.

Augoye had chosen to align his loyalty to his godfather and Governor Okowa was said to have been displeased. Insiders say that Okowa who demands loyalty of his aides was so peeved he started questioning why he should give his nod to Augoye. This kickstarted the interesting political times enveloping the state now.

Unperturbed, Augoye, considered humbled, shrewd and politically astute has wormed his way into not just the Ibori group but indeed to most of the political leaders in PDP. Ask anyone of them, and Augoye’s name is either the first or the second they mention when assessing the aspirants for the post.

Not many wonder: where did this James Augoye man emerge from? His political antecedents are humble. He rose from being a Councillor, to becoming an interim council chairman before Okowa’s emergence propelled him to state politics and political appointment.

Augoye also has ethnic sentiments working in his favour. The Okpes who are the largest sub-ethnic group in Urhobo, and who occupy two distinct local government areas: Okpe and Sapele, are of the view that it is their turn to produce the governor of the state given that they have never produced any governor since the creation of the state while all the other ethnic sub-groups have each have their sons occupy the office.

The campaign has been on going and there seems to be an understanding that the Okpes have a case. So far, unlike the other sub groups who have two or more aspirants contesting for the post, Augoye is the only Okpe in the race.

    JAMES MANAGER

All are agreed that Senator James Manager is an astute politician with good grassroots support especially in the Delta South Senatorial zone which comprises the Ijaws, the Itsekiris and the Isokos.

He was a foundation works commissioner under Chief James Ibori who he partnered with from their Grassroots Democratic Movement, GDM days. He was “bribed” with a senatorial seat when Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, from the same senatorial seat became the favourite for the post of Governor post Ibori, a post he has held in four consecutive elections.

Maternally of the Isoko ethnic group, one of the tripod that holds the Delta South Senatorial district, Manager has somehow, against the zoning arrangement in the state emerged one of the front runners for the party’s flag.

As stated in our last article, were he to wait till it is the perceived turn of Delta South senatorial zone before aspiring for the position, he would already be in his 70s, a time he would be considered too old to vie for the office.

    KINGSLEY BURUTU OTUARO

He is the sitting deputy governor of the state. He too is of the Ijaw ethnic group. At 53 years, he is one of the youngest aspirants who have shown interest in succeeding his boss, Ifeanyi Okowa.

He is a past Special Assistant to James Ibori, a two time former commissioner representing the Ijaw ethnic group on the DESOPADEC board. His Excellency has been in the corridors of power since the Ibori government days.

A lawyer and masters degree holder in Peace and Conflict Studies, he has emerged as one of the top five contenders for the position.

It is hard to say now if Governor Okowa who was backed by the Tompolo and the various Ijaw groups and reaped their magical votes massively will throw his weight behind his deputy.

But some say that having taken a stance for a level playing field for all the zones, Okowa would be hard put to chest out for his deputy. This is especially so given the unstated threat that should Okowa force his way through with a candidate that is not of Urhobo ethnic group, the Urhobos can punish him and the PDP and vote for whoever the APC candidate turns out to be.

    BARRISTER FRED MAJEMITE

A two time commissioner in Delta state, a robust, active politician and lawyer, Fred Majemite is pursing his ambition to succeed Governor Okowa purposefully and calculatedly.

He has met and consulted with almost all the political leaders of the party. He is traversing the state and trying to build a solid political base to propel him into the pole position for the flag of the PDP.

Its a herculean task, but he does not seem to be deterred by the seeming anointing which Edevbie and Augoye appear to enjoy.

    OVIE AGAS

The rumour in town, of recent is that Governor Okowa is beginning to look the way of his former Secretary to Government, Chief Ovie Agas.

In the rat race for positioning and alignment, a shift is beginning to appear. The rumoured romance of Ovie Agas by Governor Okowa has introduced a new frenzy among political jobbers.

The idea being that whoever Governor Okowa supports will immediately be pivoted to the top three position among the aspirants.

WATCH OUT: Three names are also on the lips of some political observers in the state. The first of this, is Chief Kenneth Okpara, a former commissioner for finance under Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan who is a former world bank officer.

Brought into politics by Dr Uduaghan, he has been approached by some PDP chieftains and has been persuaded to enter the race by some of the top politicians in the state. Though facing a personal challenge, Chief Okpara might likely become more visible on the campaign trail from January next year.

Political pundits are also interestingly looking in the direction of Olorogun Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, a one time House of Representative Member, a former Managing Director of the NDDC and a former Senator and two term adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

As with almost all things with him, pundits say they won’t be surprised if the God factor which usually works in his favour throws him into the top contender rung of the crowded field of PDP aspirants soon. Could he be the joker Okowa is holding to his chest?

The third person seemingly on the radar is the effervescent Jaro Egbo, a former adviser to Ibe Kachukwu when he was junior Petroleum Minister; a current adviser to the interim administrator of the NDDC and a former candidate for the house of assembly elections of Delta State.

So who does the cap fit? it is still morning yet on the campaign trail but Edevbie, Augoye and Manager currently seem to be head and shoulders above the rest.

Nevertheless, whoever finally emerges will depend on the political relationship management between the Ibori and Okowa groups on the one hand and Okowa and Professor Oyovbaire on the other.

2023: Fashola reacts to his involvement in presidency campaign groups

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has dissociated himself from groups operating under The Nigeria Project 2023 purportedly campaigning for him and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum over the 2023 elections.

A poster from the group allegedly presenting Messrs Fashola and Zulum as presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively of an unnamed political party has been circulating on social media.

Fashola’s spokesman Hakeem Bello said in a disclaimer today that he was addressing the issue for two reasons.

“The first of such was to answer with a strong negative to the numerous inquiries from right thinking and well-meaning Nigerians on whether the Honorable Minister had been contacted or if the Groups had his consent in issuing the invitation,” he said.

“Without equivocation, no individual or group has contacted the Honorable Minister for or on behalf of The Nigeria Project 2023. As Honorable Minister, Fashola is currently focused on leading his dedicated Team in the Ministry of Works and Housing to deliver on the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari for an expanded and upgraded road transport infrastructure; and affordable Housing nationwide in order to achieve economic growth and prosperity for the citizenry.

“Secondly, is the fact that entities unknown to a political party cannot present candidates on behalf of such a political party. As a ranking and loyal member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the individual and groups cited as promoters of The Nigeria Project 2023 are unknown to the APC and the Honorable Minister.

“Against the backdrop of the foregoing, the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN urges members of the public to be wary of the antics of unsolicited individuals and Support Groups whose real intentions remain questionable.”

He added that every support possible should be given to the effort of the Buhari administration to deliver a better nation for all.

2023: Clark renews call for power shift

Chief Edwin Clark, National Leader, Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), has supported clamour for the Southern Nigeria to produce the President in 2023.

He said this on Sunday, in Abuja, at an expanded meeting of the forum with the theme, “State of the Nation and Preparations toward 2023 General Elections”.

Clark, also an Ijaw Leader and Elder Statesman, said it was imperative for the south to produce the next President of Nigeria to guard against marginalisation.

“We want the zoning to continue. It is conventional. Even though zoning is not part of our Constitution, it is conventional. Let them zone it to the south.

“The south should be ready to have the next President. Without that, there is no Nigeria.

“When the Constitution did not provide a succession when Yar’Adua was ill, convention was adopted.

“Even though zoning is not part of our national Constitution or party Constitution, it has been an acceptable convention that will keep this country together, “he said.

The elder statesman who also spoke in support of restructuring, said that it should be the order of the day.

“We must restructure. We must not close our eyes to what is happening in this country. We don’t want to be manipulated over. We are ready to have the next President”

Meanwhile, the socio-cultural group issued a communique at the end of its meeting jointly signed by Clark, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Leader, Afenifere, Prof. George Obiozor, President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Other signatories included Dr Pogu Bitrus, National President, Middle Belt Forum and Sen. Emmanuel Essien, National Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

Presenting the communique, Bitrus said that the group urged the Federal Government, to heed the genuine and reasonable nationwide call for a transparent National Dialogue.

“And take urgent steps towards restructuring and birthing a new Constitution; to bring back equitable harmony to the country.

“We insist that it is imperative to immediately restructure the country considering the precarious prevailing atmosphere before any further elections.

“We unequivocally and in full resolve, call on the APC and PDP and other political parties to zone the Presidency in 2023, to the South; at the next election.

“We insist that cattle rearing is a generally, private business enterprise, as such, the federal government should avoid committing state resources to promote any particular business, beyond providing the enabling environment, in the performance of its regulatory roles,” he said.

  • 2023: Former Minister, Oyovbaire faults Gov Okowa on PDP zoning in Delta

2023: Former Minister, Oyovbaire faults Gov Okowa on PDP zoning in Delta

Former Minister of Information and Culture, and elder statesman, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire has faulted the position of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on the zoning arrangement of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Prof. Oyovbaire faulted the position of Governor Okowa on the PDP zoning arrangement in the State on Saturday while speaking at the inauguration of Delta Central 2023, a political lobby group christened DC-23.

Oyovbaire, speaking at the event held at the conference centre of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), confirmed that PDP has a zoning arrangement in the State, and that the power rotation is anchored on the three senatorial districts and not based on ethnicity.

Recall that while addressing journalists in a quarterly media interaction in Asaba, the State capital, Okowa had opened up on his idea of the State PDP zoning arrangement.

He was addressing the rumour that he is planning to handover power to an Ijaw man come 2023 when there is a gentleman agreement within the PDP for power to rotate within the three senatorial districts.

Okowa from Delta North Senatorial District in 2015 took over as Governor from former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who is from Delta South. Before them, Chief James Ibori was Governor from Delta Central.

The rotation of the governorship seat among the various senatorial districts gave rise to a zoning pattern in the PDP of the State in what seems to be a gentleman’s agreement.

This gives the impression that the next Governor of the State should come from Delta Central come 2023, owing to the arrangement and where the rotation started in 1999 with Ibori.

However, it has been rumoured that Okowa had already reached an agreement with Ijaw leaders to ensure that his successor comes from the Ijaw ethnic nationality in Delta South Senatorial District as a payback for their support to his administration.

Among the Ijaw from Delta South senatorial district jostling to succeed Governor Okowa are Okowa’s deputy, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, and the current senator representing Delta South, Senator James Manager.

“A gentleman agreement is an agreement that is not written. I want to believe that that is what it is supposed to be. But, whether there was any further meeting in which a gentleman agreement was reached, there has been no formal meeting in which a gentleman agreement was reached as at today.

“It means that whatever we are doing and talking about today, it is about what is fair, what is equitable, and how to define what is fair, and to define what is equitable, and justiciable.

“Hearing about me handing over to an Ijaw man, it is only God Almighty that knows who will be Governor after me. I cannot pretend to be God, for I am not. I don’t know who God is going to bring. I do not have an intention of playing the role of God.

“Just as they say I want to hand over to an Ijaw man, that is how they say I want to hand over to an Urhobo. You will hear so many things. I do not think I have the strength to play God.

“But the real truth is, when the politics starts, politics will be played. But I know that God Almighty will take the decision of who will be Governor.

“At some point in time, as a party, we will sit down to look at issues, to find out what truly is fair, what truly is justiciable, and what should equity really mean. Where is the Governorship going? I think if you pray, and you ask God, God may reveal it,” Governor Okowa said at the quarterly media interaction.

Meanwhile, faulting Governor Okowa’s position, Oyovbaire has confirmed the PDP zoning arrangement in the State, stressing that the “gentleman” power rotation of the PDP in the State was never based on ethnicity, rather on the bases of senatorial districts.

Oyovbaire called on the Urhobo nation to go about pursuing the actualization of producing the next governor modestly.

He advised that it is important that the Urhobos should not show any form of arrogance about seeking to produce the next governor.

The former minister said the Urhobos must be ready to persuade people and make them see that the rotation is a robust thing that will bring peace to the state.

Prof Oyovbaire who was the chair of the DC-23 occasion, said the convener, Chief Ighoyota Amori, is his good friend and one very enthusiastic in everything he does, but said talking about a constitution and structures were not necessary because it is a lobby group within the PDP.

On the rumours that DC-23 was a group formed to project David Edevbie, he said: “As far as I know, DC-23 is not working for any candidate”.

Speaking more about the group, he said: “In DC-23, I personally rejected to have an office. They had zoned whatsoever they thought was the Board of Trustees to Okpe thinking that was the position I was interested in.

“I am not in any office. I believe in DC-23 because it is a lobby group within PDP. If I discover that it is outside PDP I will get out”.

While he commended the initiative, he said if you ”keep on having too strong a group, you would encourage others to have theirs against you. That is not what PDP wants or stands for. PDP stands for persuasion”.

According to him, it is his view that the rotation comes to Delta Central not because he is an Urhobo man.

“No one who has gone against the party has been able to produce any governorship candidate for the party. We went through rough edges under Uduaghan and Okowa. The party will take a stand based on the rotation arrangement and we will all follow that”.

To the Urhobo nation, he said: “Let us be humble, convince our fellow PDP leaders and co-leaders in the North, and particularly in the South senatorial districts that it should go back to Urhobo.

“We started in the Central, it went to the South, we all fought it to go the North and now it is coming back to Central.

“But don’t force people. People may want to contest from other senatorial districts but once the party stands and says this is the way we are going, that is where we go”.

Also speaking at the event was the Political Adviser to the Chairman of the PDP National Working Committee, Chief Ighoyota Amori, who is the Convener and Chairman of DC-23.

Amori said DC-23 was on course and ready to deliver it’s assignment through appeal to other senatorial districts of the State.

In his address, Amori reeled out the modus operandi of DC-23 and stated that with God, Delta Central will claim the governorship seat

Amori’s address reads: “There are so many expectations on me to deliver on the avowed sole aim of the organization, and I wish to assure you that, I will not disappoint the good and peace loving people of Delta Central by the grace of God.

“This organization is not a one man show, it was put together by prominent and reverend elders and leaders of Delta Central political class.

“For Clarity, DC-23 is not a political party. It is a political pressure group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta Central with a single objective of delivering on the Governorship Project in 2023.

“DC-23 is not a parallel body to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, DC-23 is not formed to be antagonistic to our amiable Governor of Delta State, H.E. Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, DC-23 is not formed to promote disharmony among the three Senatorial districts in Delta State.

“Rather, DC-23 is formed to support our amiable Governor to enable him finish strong; to promote inter senatorial peace, love and unity in Delta State, to create an enabling peaceful environment for succession of the governorship in Delta State.

“The task before us is enormous, it is not a job that will be left for the Exco of DC-23 to handle alone. It is an assignment for every member of PDP and friends of PDP.

“The approach to achieving this goal will not be confrontational. We shall go round our people in Delta Central and appeal to them for support, we shall go beyond Delta State to Abuja and other places in the world where we can find people who will be of help to us, we shall not respond to any form of antagonism, we shall be steadfast and united for us to deliver on the avowed project.

“Before we step out, we shall make urgent arrangements to visit our traditional rulers to obtain their blessings and we shall appeal to them on behalf of Delta Central, to reach out to their colleagues in Delta North and Delta South Senatorial Districts.

“We shall then visit the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to obtain blessings from them, we shall also appeal to them to send delegations to meet with their counterparts in Delta North and South Senatorial Districts.

“Having achieved these goals, we shall immediately launch out our appeal missions throughout the State.

“May I say that the task before us is enormous, to achieve our goal requires everyone cooperation and understanding; unity, tolerance and patient with each other. No human being is infallible, I therefore wish to tender apology ahead for any mistakes we shall make to which we shall correct in the course of carrying out this assignment.

“With God on our side, we shall succeed to the Glory of God in 2023.

“I thank you once again, for finding me,my exco members and Board of Trustees members worthy to serve Delta Central at this critical period of the annal of our political history”.

Meanwhile, TNG recalls that in events leading up to the 2019 Governorship election in Delta, Okowa expressed confidence in the zoning arrangement of the State PDP, the principle upon which he was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.

At one of such events, a well attended campaign rally of the PDP, held on 1st of February 2019 at Owa-Oyibu, Ika North-East local government area of, home of the State Governor, Okowa placed on record that the rotational principle has cemented the bond of unity in the State.

The Governor, who largely laced his speech in Ika language, stated: “I am happy with the crowd that I am seeing here today; God bless Ika nation, God bless Deltans for this show of solidarity; in our State, no one is talking about any other political party, it is all about the PDP.

“I thank our leaders for the support, in every part of Delta State, we have no fear because, we have agreed on turn-by-turn, zoning has made us to be more patient, happier, more united and living in peace.

The Governor’s speech was received with a resounding ovation from the thousands of Deltans across party lines who were at the rally.

However, at the point in time referred to by Governor Okowa when the PDP had sat down and looked at issues, Deltans will find out what the PDP zoning arrangement in the State is like: whether zoning by ethnicity or zoning by senatorial districts.

Meanwhile, no fewer than six Urhobo from Delta Central, including, Olorogun Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Olorogun David Edevbie, Olorogun Kenneth Okpara, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi and Chief James Augoye have indicated interest in contesting for the governorship seat under the PDP in 2023.

Tinubu vows to sustain Nigeria’s progressive agenda beyond 2023

Sen Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed strong support for the progressive agenda in Nigeria, with a promise to sustain it beyond 2023.

Dr Abdulrazak Danjuma, Spokesperson of the video conference engagements, said in a statement on Tuesday, that Tinubu made the promise at a virtual conference that was well attended by Nigerians across the world.

The conference with the theme: “Sustaining The Progressive Agenda For A Better Nigeria”, was hosted by Mr Ade Omole, leader of the UK Chapter of the APC.

Tinubu, represented by Mr Dele Alake at the virtual conference, said that sustaining the progressive agenda would ensure a better Nigeria in the interest of all.

He commended Omole for his tenacity and doggedness in promoting the progressive agenda.

He also applauded the APC UK helmsman for spearheading the support for the party and the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in the Diaspora.

He noted that though the term nation-building was often used simultaneously with state-building, democratisation, modernisation, political development, post-conflict reconstruction, and peace building, the concepts were however, different.

According to him, the concept of nation-building often used interchangeably with national integration, contains a vast extent of human relationships and attitude.

This, he said, ranged from the integration of diverse and discrete cultural loyalties, and the development of a sense of nationality.

Tinubu stressed that if nation-building so touched the root of people’s beliefs and attitude concerning politics, the process must be affected significantly by the character of a society’s political culture.

He advised Nigerians to stop fighting one another in order to present a unified front against the common threat.

He maintained that all that was needed to address the country’s challenges was unity and love, adding that the military needed the support and prayers of Nigerians even as they confronted terrorism and criminality across the country.

The conference according to the statement, focused on the essentials for progressive leadership and progress in Nigeria, which are vision, knowledge and courage.
