Attacks: INEC Chairman counts losses, gives way out

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says timely arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of attacks on its facilities and assets nationwide would end the trend.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the opening of a two-day Induction Retreat for the commission’s Residents Electoral Commissioners in Lagos on Wednesday.

Newsmen reports that the retreat is organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

In his opening remarks, Yakubu said that in the last four months, five local government offices of the commission were attacked by unknown persons.

According to him, critical facilities and assets are lost to those attacks, hence the need to curb the trend urgently.
He said: “These facilities including a total of 1,992 ballot boxes, 399 voting cubicles and 22 electric power generators as well as thousands of uncollected PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) among many other items.

“These attacks must stop and the perpetrators apprehended and prosecuted. Our responsibility is to conduct elections. The best solution for us is the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators.

“The ultimate solutions are the arrest and prosecution of the culprits so that vandals and arsonists do not feel that bad behaviour is acceptable in our country. It is really very sad as elections approach.

“However, I want to assure Nigerians that we will recover from these attacks, those materials will be replaced, but there is a limit to our ability to keep replacing lost items with just 86 days to the general elections.”

According to him, the commission will continue to work with the security agencies, traditional and community leaders and all well-meaning Nigerians to stop the attacks.

He said that INEC was committed to ensuring that nothing would stop the elections from going ahead as scheduled ,”and the will of Nigerian people will prevail. That is what we have been assuring Nigerians about.”

On the retreat, Yakubu said that it was part of the preparation for the 2023 general elections.

“We are having a retreat involving all the Residents Electoral Commissioners as we are aware 19 of them were sworn in about four weeks ago.

“We felt that there should be an induction retreat for them to familiarise themselves with the processes and procedures because the election is holding in the next 86 days,” the INEC boss said.

He said that the retreat would also dwell on standard operating procedures on the collection of PVCs, guidelines to voters distribution to polling units, framework for electoral logistics and code of conduct for commission’s members, officials and staff.

Yakubu said that copies of code of conduct for members, officials and staff would be made available for all.
He added: “I want to reiterate that our success ultimately depends on our integrity. We should remain independent and impartial.

“The commission is not a political party. The commission has no candidates in the forthcoming elections.

” All political parties have equal standing before the commission. The choice belongs to Nigerian citizens, the electorate.

“Our responsibility is to uphold the sanctity of the ballots, nothing more and nothing less,” INEC boss said.

Speaking on rumour that voters could vote without PVC on election day, Yakubu described such as “absolutely incorrect”, saying “for any person to vote, he or she must be a registered voter, issued with the PVC.

“The commission has consistently maintained a policies that ‘no PVCs, no voting. Nothing has changed. It is a legal requirements and doing otherwise will be a violation of the law.

“I urge Nigerians to ignore those suggestions that a person can vote on the election day without a PVC,” he said.

Commending UNDP for supporting the retreat, Yakubu said that the long standing partnership with INEC had gone a long way in sustaining the implementing progress being witnessed in the electoral processes.

In his goodwill message, Mr Deryck Fritz, the Chief Technical Advisor, UNDP, urged the RECs to effectively implement the policies of the commission and be proactive frontline problem-solvers.

“It is you that must oversee the prudent management of the technical, material, financial and human resources entrusted to you. It is you that must engage impartially with the political actors.

“It is you that must foster the critical local relationships and partnerships with civil society organizations, with the state administration, with the transport unions, with other service providers, and with the police and other security services.

“In this period of the World Cup, we are reminded that successful elections, like successful football matches, are a result of cooperation and teamwork,” Fritz said.

According to him, for many, the recent trajectory of improved electoral management is viewed as irreversible, but as is the case in any election, opposing forces persist, such as marketplace politics and security challenges.

He said that these challenges would test the robustness of the INEC processes and procedures, and the commitment of its staff.

He said that democracy, in many parts of the world, was under threat, adding that only with strong institutions would such threats be resisted and repelled.

“And where questions arise regarding the conduct of the process, or allegations of electoral mismanagement or even fraud, it is critical that trusted and competent mechanisms exist to address these concerns, as an important alternative to electoral violence and political instability.

“INEC as the constitutionally mandated body, must be and also be seen to be the impartial and neutral arbiter of the electoral contest,” he said.

Newsmen reports that the retreat has in attendance all the INEC Residents Electoral Commissioners and top management staff of the commission.

2023: Court dismisses suit challenging Stella Oduah’s senatorial candidacy

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a suit filed against Sen. Stella Oduah, seeking an order invalidating her nomination as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s a senatorial candidate in Anambra.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, dismissed the suit for being status barred.

Newsmen reports that Justice Ekwo had, on Oct. 13, fixed today for judgment in the matter filed by John Emeka, an aspirant in the May 27 primary poll conducted by the PDP and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The plaintiff had sued Oduah, PDP and INEC as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

Emeka alleged that Oduah lied on oath in both her expression of interest and nomination forms, including in the INEC Form CF001 which she submitted to the commission for the 2023 Anambra North Senatorial District seat.

In the originating summons marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/841/2022 dated and filed on June 8 by his lawyer, Mbanefo Ikwegbue, Emeka prayed the court to declare that the information supplied by Oduah in her INEC Form CF001, with respect to her participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, was false.

He said the senator had, under oath, used the same information to participate in the previous general elections as the PDP’s candidate for the 2015 and 2019 polls for Anambra North Senatorial District.

According to him, the act contravenes Sections 12(1)(a)(b)(c) and 13(1)(a) of the NYSC Act.

He further prayed the court to declare that by reason of the false information given in her INEC Form CF 001 in respect of her participation in the NYSC Scheme, she was not qualified to have contested in the said elections and or any other election into the Nigerian Senate

  • “ Una no dey shame,”Tinubu Tells PDP, Atiku, and Okowa, As He Visits Delta

“ Una no dey shame,”Tinubu Tells PDP, Atiku, and Okowa, As He Visits Delta

Presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has told the leadership of the PDP, the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and indeed all members of the party that they have no shame.

Tinubu made the remark during the Presidential Rally/Flag Off of the governorship campaign held at the Warri City Stadium, Saturday, November 19.

Speaking in pidgin English, which is very popular in Warri, he said the PDP has no shame, selling government assets off while in government at the centre, nearly all of the nation’s assets to their proxies.

“All they sold, where is the money. How long have they been in Delta State, for 23 years of PDP in Delta State what have you seen? Warri is going down. They don’t know the way for development, they have no brains and don’t have the vision and road to prosperity. We know the way, go to Lagos and see development and progress. They are evil people.

“These people, year after year, election after election, they lie to you. They have no shame. PDP has no shame. When Atiku was there he was fighting his boss in the public. They were telling us how they used public money to buy cars for their girlfriends. They have no shame.

“But I will fulfill all my promises. I appreciate your show of love for me. It is an indication of your desire for change.”

He affirmed that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege will be the next governor that will develop Delta State.

“Senator Omo-Agege as governor of Delta State will work with me and bring hope and progress to the State. Your sea ports, your steel industry and many areas of development are not for sale but for development.” Tinubu said.

Earlier, Senator Omo-Agege had assured that when elected as governor, he would work with Tinubu as President to ensure that the Delta Steel Company, DSC, is reactivated, Warri port is functional and the Maritime University in Okorenkoko operational.

He told Tinubu that the people of Delta State are Christians who do not act in treachery but lamented that recently Governor Okowa acted as if he is not a Deltan.

“We are Christians and we do not betray but the latest betrayer of the South happens to be the governor of Delta State. He is replica of Judas Iscariot and if he does not want to commit suicide like Judas Iscariot, he should immediately step down from that ill-fated vice presidential race he is pursuing.

” Our people are very angry, they want development but rather than develop the State, all we hear are loans and more loans. All Deltans and those unborn are now indebted as a result of Okowa’s recklessness. To add insult to the injury he has brought a clone and Deltans have rejected Okowa and his clone. We don’t want a motorpark Chairman to be our governor even though that is what Okowa wants.

Also speaking, former APC Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, reiterated Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike’s disclosure that President Muhammadu Buhari released a huge sum of unpaid funds accruing from 13 per cent oil derivation to oli producing states including Delta State and that the development going on in Rivers State were funded by the money.

Oshiomhole charged Deltans to ask Okowa where their share of the money was.

“Go and ask Okowa where is your N250 billion, Edo State got N100 billion, where is your N250 billion from 13 per cent oil derivation? You didn’t tell us the federal government gave you such money, now where is the money? Did you use it for your vice presidential election race?”

Highlight of the event was the handing of the party flag to Senator Omo-Agege as Delta State APC governorship candidate.

Ignore Uzodimma at your own peril – Tinubu to South-East leaders

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, has told business and political leaders in the South-East to ignore Imo’s Gov. Hope Uzodimma at their own peril.

Tinubu spoke in Owerri on Thursday at a town hall meeting with South-East private sector drivers, including manufacturers, investors, traders, entrepreneurs and artisans.

He expressed delight over Uzodimma’s developmental strides and called on Nigerians to join hands with him and the APC to bring prosperity and renewed hope to the country.

Tinubu called on all people of goodwill to vote for progress and to be part of the nation’s golden future and never to allow those who put the country backwards to come back again.

Tinubu emphasised that Nigerians had the resources and the capacity to move forward as against incessant lamentation.

”I am coming to serve the people and not to be their boss. I brought progressive governance and forward-looking government and not the type that will take Nigerians backwards, ” he said.

“We will develop a code that when activated, will make their goods and services easy on the roads of Nigeria,” he said.

Also, the National Chairman of APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, said he came as a witness to what the stakeholders meeting of businessmen and women with their presidential candidate in the South-East would do with the interface.

He described the meeting as strategic, adding that it was “organized for a unique people, the business group who are the major drivers of the nation’s economy”.

newsmen reports that the meeting was also attended by Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau and his Ebonyi colleague, among others.
