Don’t kill yourselves for politicians, they’re all friends struggling for national cake-Kukah cautions Nigerians

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah has cautioned Nigerians not to die for politicians as they are all friends struggling to grab from the national cake.

According to the priest, opposition politicians are friends jostling for their piece of the national cake and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Kukah spoke in an interview on a national tv on Tuesday hours after the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu; and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, bantered at the private wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday.

Kukah, who is the Convener of the National Peace Committee, said political fanatics should learn a lesson from the public exchange of pleasantries between Tinubu and Atiku.

He said the message from the banter is that political loyalists of both frontline presidential candidates for the 2023 election should be wise, eschew violence and not kill themselves for people drinking from the same pool.

“These politicians are struggling and they’ve lived their lives struggling for the national cake which they will distribute amongst themselves. It is therefore in the interest of ordinary Nigerians to know that they have to vote to stay alive,” the cleric said.

Kukah also said that enthusiasts of politicians “must understand that these politicians know themselves” regardless of their grandstanding and posturing.

He, therefore, advised supporters of candidates all over the country to be “a bit more restrained and wise”.

“We ordinary people must figure out how to manage our passion when it comes to politics. Don’t take seriously the grandstanding of the politicians.

“All the things you see about them abusing themselves or quarreling, you will think they will never shake hands. They are very good friends, and many of them drink from the same pool. So, don’t go and kill yourself for nothing. That is what that message is all about,” he said.

    Disturbing Records
With about three months to the next general elections, political violence seems to be on the increase with some recorded in parts of Zamfara and Lagos states, spreading fears about the safety of voters at the polls in 2023.

A convoy of Atiku was reportedly attacked by hoodlums in Borno State last Wednesday. A rally by the former Vice President in Kaduna on October 17, 2022 was also disrupted by thugs.

Also, there have been increasing attacks on the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the latest being on Thursday when hoodlums burnt two offices of the electoral body in Ogun and Osun states, destroying 65,699 uncollected Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), 904 ballot boxes, amongst others.

Worried by the endless attacks, INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu on Friday held an emergency meeting with members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

Yakubu said about 50 attacks have been recorded across the country since campaigns began on September 28, 2022.

The INEC boss urged the committee to take decisive action to nip such occurrences in the bud.

2023: Ayu has capacity to lead PDP to victory, group says

The Peoples Democratic Party Coalition for Professional Groups and Peaceful Co-existence (PDPCUP) has expressed confidence that Dr Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the PDP would lead the party to victory in 2023.

The National Coordinator, Alhaji Muhammad Dan’auta, made this known during the pressure group’s meeting in Kaduna on Sunday.

Dan’auta said Ayu would bring the PDP out of its challenges and set the party on the road to victory.

”The reson for this ing was to find solutions to the current crises in the party, share ideas on how to promote unity and promote peaceful coexistence in the north.

He said that Ayu deserved all the support from PDP leaders because of his previous records as committed, hardworking, calm and a focused politician who has sacrificed for the party and the country.

“His calmness, faithfulness, perseverance and focus will surely ensure unity in the party, drive PDP to victory and work towards rebuilding the country for the good of all.

“He is a leader, pathfinder and an icon of hope for many positive things to come for the country,” he said.

The national coordinator promised to work with great care to promote PDP Presidential flagbearer, Mr Abubakar Atiku and other candidates across the north-western states for the victory of the party.

He also expressed confidence in Abubakar’s ability to lead the country.

”We are confident that Abubakar-led government, if given the opportunity, will unite Nigerians to work for the greater good of the country.

“We are hopeful that Nigerians will trust Abubakar enough to give him the mandate by coming out en masse to vote for PDP and protect their votes.

“I urged Nigerians to be wary of desperate politicians with ethnic and religious tendencies that will divide the country and truncate our developing democracy and evolving peace,” he said.

He advised politicians and their supporters against use of vulgar language that will heat the polity.

Newsmen reports that for months, the PDP G5 – Governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) – have been consistent in their demand that Ayu step down as PDP national chairman as a precondition to campaign for Abubakar.

Newsmen reports that the G-5 is led by Gov. Wike.

The group emerged after the PDP presidential primary where Abubakar, defeated Wike and other aspirants in the race to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.

They have been have been demending the resignsation of Ayu to pave the way for a southerner to lead the party in order to achieve a “regional balance”.

The governors’ argument is that Ayu and Atiku hail from northern Nigeria.

2023: Why I didn’t approve Samuel Ogbemudia stadium for LP rally – Godwin Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday  stated reasons why the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium wasn’t approved to Labour Party to have their rally in the state.

The Edo-born politician made it known that the 24 hours’ notice they got was too short to approve the use of the venue for the rally.

He disclosed this while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Friday, saying that he thought the party was serious and expected so much from them.

Obaseki said, “Well, there are several venues in Benin for rallies, I heard that they [Labour Party] applied on Wednesday night to hold a rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Friday morning, giving us one day’s notice.

“The tracks in that stadium are still under warranty. The pitch has to be maintained in a certain mode. So it is not just another facility you just can go in and use without preparing. If they knew they had a rally on Friday morning, why could not they give more time and notice so we could give them the conditions under which they could use the pitch.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obaseki’s party, had used the stadium for a rally on October 22.

“The same thing we did to the PDP when they wanted to use the pitch. And the only reason why we allowed the PDP rally was because it was used as an opportunity to commission that facility. Otherwise, most other rallies are held in other large grounds around the city,” Obaseki added.

“I expected more from the Labour Party. I thought they were more serious, you cannot be planning for a rally on a Friday and be giving less than two days.

“I spoke to my friend Peter Obi the night before he told me he was coming to the state, and we offered him all the courtesy, including security and some logistics, but I did not know they were coming for rallies.

“For me, the issues did not even come to me. The people at the sports commission knew what to do, and they did it professionally.”

“The display of the voter’s registers which commenced today, Nov. 11, is to enable the voters across the 171 registration areas to raise claims and objections; I know that the commission has trained staff who are going to carry out the exercise.

“Today, we have a singular honour and with the permission of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Pauline Onyeka, to dispatch the registers to the various Local Government Areas.

“We charge the EOs and their subordinates to ensure that the exercise is diligently carried out; that people who are coming out for claims and objections are diligently attended to and we will not tolerate a situation where you will take it and dump it in the office,” Oha said.

He warned the officials involved in the exercise against indulging in any form of truancy and laxity, noting that there would be effective monitoring by the various heads of departments and the REC.

2023 Elections: INEC makes clarifications on the use of BVAS

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has assured Nigerians that the Bimodal Accreditation System, (BVAS) introduced for next year’s election will not be hacked.

INEC Deputy Director of ICT, Dr. Lawrence Bayode, gave this assurance while featuring on the Channels TV  breakfast show sunrise daily on Wednesday.

Bayode said that the electoral body has blocked all loopholes and taken care of all the issues with the device.

His words, “I want to say again that we have done everything to ensure that the BVAS is not compromised. The data on the BVAS will be secured.

“After the poll, when the data is transmitted to our backend server, the data in transit will be secured; and by the time the data gets to our backend server, the data will also be secured there.

“We have looked at the machine, and we looked at a lot of things; like, as I said earlier, you cannot build such a system, and you won’t fortify the system to solidify it.”

He added, “Whether we like it or not, people will try a lot to beat this system. But the more they try, the more they meet a brick wall.

“I can say categorically that we have taken care of every surface attack vulnerability on this system, and we have also tried our best to ensure that the system cannot be hacked into on election day. And I can say again that BVAS cannot be compromised.”

Recall that the BVAS device has been tested in Osun and Ekiti elections and it has been given a passmark by election observers.

  • 2023: You are free to support any candidate of your choice – Atiku replies Ortom

2023: You are free to support any candidate of your choice – Atiku replies Ortom

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has replied Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom.

The Waziri of Adamawa noted that it’s uncivil for Ortom to blame him for the armed Fulani attacks on the people of Benue State.

However, Atiku said that Benue state is his home.

Recall that Ortom had vowed never to support Atiku’s presidential ambition or any other Fulani man due to the incessant killings in Benue State.

Ortom said  “hell with Atiku,” the governor said he couldn’t support a Fulani man due to herders’ attacks on residents of the state.

In his reaction. Atiku said the governor is entitled to support any candidate of his choice in 2023.

He spoke through the spokesperson of his presidential campaign team, Dino Melaye.

Dino Melaye made this known while featuring on Arise TV political Programme.

Appearing on Arise TV, Melaye said: “Ortom is entitled by right to support whichever candidate he wants; it’s not proper to place the blame of what is happening in Benue on Atiku; it is not fair. During the Shagari administration, he appointed four Benue indigenes as ministers, also the late Yar’Adua appointed a Benue indigene as AGF. These two presidents are Fulani by ethnicity, yet they appointed Benue citizens.”

“It’s uncivil to blame Fulani activities on Atiku, this is not right and not proper.”

He added “In February this year, Atiku donated N50 million to IDPs; he shows love to the people of the state. Benue is a second home to Atiku.”

2023: Okowa’s indepth presentation at Arise tv town hall debate+video

Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa who represented the presidential candidate of PDP, Atiku Abubakar at the Arise presidential town hall debate left no one in doubt as to the readiness of his party to move Nigeria forward in 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who’s far away in Morocco had formally written to the organisers that due to his absence his vice, Okowa can adequately represent him.

The Delta State Governor true to Atiku’s position delivered convincingly as he adequately tackled all questions revolving around the Nigerian economy and statehood.

On debt and the economy, Okowa said:

“From 1999 to 2007, we knew where President Obasanjo and VP Atiku, met the country and where they left it. Because of them, we were able to pay back a lot of our debt and we had debt forgiveness.”

“In Delta State, we used to have agitations in oil-producing communities. But now, we have partnered in these communities to create jobs, create a new class of entrepreneurs and show people that we care about development.”

“The right path is to use government resources to develop entrepreneurs, make people’s lives easier, and grow the economy so that people will live in better conditions.

He further explained that “it’s wrong each time we have a little crisis we get into trouble, COVID came we got into trouble because of our dependence on oil but this is wrong.

“We need to diversify our economy and all these are documented in our manifesto on how to venture into agriculture, modernise agriculture, agro processing and others in our manifesto.

On women 35percent affirmation, Okowa said this is also well captured in the party’s manifesto “as you know our women are now well trained unlike before and they are very capable in their duties.

Asked what will his party do to ensure there’s credible elections in Nigeria, the vice presidential candidate said”it’s expensive to organize elections in Nigeria and campaigns are expensive in this part of the world.

“But to get it right we must put a credible electoral system in place and once this is done voters will vote out those who could not keep their promises.

In devolution of powers, Okowa said “it’s not right for the Federal Government to collect over 50percent and at the end of the month peanuts are dished out to states.

“The local governments should be given more powers because that’s where the people are so power should be there.

On agitators such as IPOB, Boko Haram, the vice presidential candidate declared that “we will identify the genuine agitators and the criminal elements and appropriately handle the situation.

“We’ll sit with them and discuss and once they’re assured things will take shape if Nigeria is working for everybody no section will feel excluded and there will be hope for all.

  • Buhari will leave legacies of credible elections – Gambari

Buhari will leave legacies of credible elections – Gambari

The Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, says President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for leaving a legacy of free and fair elections as well as massive investments in infrastructure across the country.

A statement issued by Patience Tilley-Gyado, Assistant Director, Information, State House, Abuja, on Sunday, said Gambari stated this when members of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI) visited the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The chief of staff, who lauded the president for his respect for the constitutional term limit, said Buhari had laid a solid foundation for youth empowerment across the country, and will be remembered for his commitment to free and fair elections in this country.

”He has said it many times that Nigerians must be respected, their votes must count and he is committed to leaving by the time the administration comes to an end on May 29, 2023.”

According to him, President Buhari has led by example on probity and accountability in governance, stressing that the nation will also remember him for that.

”When people talk about the legacies President Buhari is leaving behind, it is important to mention the infrastructure legacy – the 2nd Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Abuja-Kano expressway, the network of roads and railways across the country, the ports and the power sector.

”It is important to emphasize power, because without it and infrastructure the full stature of a nation cannot be realized.”

On the president’s commitment to youth development, Gambari noted that ”the recently signed Startup Act 2022 has the youth as major beneficiary, as it recognizes the creativity of youths and seeks to empower them as productive entrepreneurs.”

He described the projected contribution of the Act to the national economy as tremendous, citing successes recorded in Morocco, Tunisia and India.

On Nigeria’s quest for the expansion of the 15-member Security Council, Gambari said Nigeria could not be ignored in international affairs, considering its contributions to international peacekeeping and economic potential.

According to him, with Nigeria projected to be the third most populated nation in the world after India and China by 2050, the country deserves a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

Gambari, who has served as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Permanent Representative to the UN in New York and first Under Secretary-General and Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General on Africa (1999-2005), told the young people on excursion to the State House:

”I think you are fortunate to be born a Nigerian. By the year 2050, according to UN statistics, Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world after India and China.

”A country that is the third most populated in the world must remain united, strong and prosperous and cannot be ignored in international affairs.

”If you are the third most populous country in the world, then the campaign for a permanent seat in the United National Security Council is one that we will find enormous support because you cannot ignore its people and potentials.”

Gambari commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Founder of LMI, Femi Gbajabiamilla, for making an impact in the lives of young people through training and mentoring the next generation of legislators and ethical public sector leaders.

He urged the LMI fellows to maintain close contacts with each other, remain focused and united in order to overcome the challenges facing the nation.

”People refer to you as leaders of tomorrow. I think it is a misnomer. You are already leaders of today because Nigeria depends on what you do and the part you have taken.

”You are Fellows-in-Training that are already leaders of today because you have been selected from over millions of other possibilities, shows that you are already making a mark.

”Do not be intimidated by titles like ‘Chief of Staff, because we all started from somewhere’,” Gambari told the LMI programme fellows, recounting his humble beginnings from a ‘village primary school in Ilorin, Kwara.

While welcoming the Fellows-in-Training to State House, the Permanent Secretary, Tijjani Umar, engaged them on the history, role and priorities of State House in providing top notch services to the President and Vice President towards the effective discharge of their responsibilities to Nigeria.

The permanent secretary also explained the functions of the Principal Officers to the President and the Vice President.

Umar expressed the willingness of the top management of State House to support the process of building a new generation of public sector leaders.

Mr Dapo Oyewole, Director LMI, who represented the Speaker, commended the Chief of Staff and the Permanent Secretary for hosting the LMI Fellows-in-Training.

”By opening the doors of State House and allowing the Fellows-in-Training to come in on the last day of their intensive training, opens a massive door of possibilities and opportunities to them,” he said.
