2023: Anyim unveils roadmap to clinch Nigeria’s top job

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, unveiled his roadmap to clinch the top post on Friday, saying the magic wand was for the PDP to re-invent itself.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with leaders of the PDP from the six geo-political zones in Abuja, Anyim promised to return Nigeria to the path of peace, unity and progress, if elected president next year.

Nigeria is on course again for a general election, where many political heavy weights and feather weights have expressed their interests to contest for the plum job.

Anyim, who was a former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said that the PDP stood a great chance to return to power after its dramatic fall from power.

He, however, warned the party to avoid the mistakes that led to its fall from power in 2015, saying that Nigerians were currently clamouring for the return of the party to steer the ship of state.

The former lawmaker, who cited some successes recorded by the PDP while in power, noted that the achievements made by the party did not come overnight but were done systematically and were planned for.

“We were planning that for the second tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan we would stretch out these plans and policies, to deliver maximum results but unfortunately, that administration was truncated.

“If you stand by me, if you partner with me, we will return this country again to the path of peace; on the path of growth and on the path to prosperity.”

Anyim advised PDP leaders and members not to repeat “the mistake of 2015’’ when some of them pulled out of the party to other parties to pursue their political ambitions.

“In 2015 some of us in PDP, simply decided to pull out of PDP to bring that government down. We were thereafter, plunged into darkness. That is why we are where we are today.

“Let nobody confuses you. Let nobody mislead you. We were confused and misled in 2015 and that is why we are here. We now have an opportunity to come together and re-invent ourselves.

“Do you agree with me that Nigerians are saying please return us to 2015? If Nigerians are begging us to return them to 2015, do you have any reason not to support me?”

Anyim argued that if the PDP must rescue Nigeria it has to first, reinvent itself and set itself on the path of equity, fairness and justice.

“When we set ourselves on these paths we will be able to lift our country with a pedestal that will secure the buy-in of everybody and the commitment of everybody to continue to build our nation.”

Anyim said that one of the major problems of Nigeria was that people never realised that politics was not just a game but a platform on which nations were built, “hence games were being played with people’s destiny’’.

“I want to say that in returning Nigeria to the part of growth, we have to build a new foundation or at least return to where we stopped in 2015.”

Giving a background of how he was first elected into the senate at the age of 37, the second time at 38 and how he became senate president at 39, Anyim said that he inherited a seriously troubled senate but that he stabilised the upper chamber when he stepped in.

“I want to say that the crisis of our nation today requires a unifier to tackle. It demands a crisis manager. It demands a stabiliser and these are all that I am known for.

“I will build consensus across board. I will make sure I secure the buy-in of every component of our polity before I deploy any policy that will help us move forward as a nation.”

On the current insecurity in the country, Anyim said that tackling the menace was beyond recruiting more soldiers or buying more arms.

He said that the problem required addressing the fundamental problems of the nation and setting up a platform that everyone would key into.

“The challenge before us currently is a challenge that we have to go back to the basics to understand our problems with a view to re-building our nation.

“When you set out an acceptable platform and an acceptable foundation that every person can commit to is when you have a solution to the problem.”

Anyim attributed the insecurity in the country to what he characterized as “betrayal of democracy, bad governance and bad leadership’’.

The presidential aspirant recalled that before the general elections that resulted to the fall of the PDP, the atmosphere in the country was generally peaceful.

Anyim said that Nigeria would return to peace and unity if Nigerians would elect leaders who would embrace fairness, equity and leaders who would also demonstrate competence and capacity.

“I will address insecurity from its roots and I will nip on the bud and address the situation where people now carrying arms.

Anyim said that the pillar of his political agenda would be to build on consensus and that his economic agenda would be anchored on industrialisation, science and technology as well as innovation

“My social integration programme will be anchored on our women and our youths while our people in the diaspora would be main-streamed into our development agenda.

The aspirant said: “We will run an inclusive government where equity, fairness, justice will be the pillar, where competence, capacity will be the driver.

“Nigeria is so rich to provide for everybody according to their level. Everybody should find space to make a decent living and be proud of this country.

“We shall together build a country all of us shall be proud of, if I’m elected into power,” Anyim assured.

  • 2023: What Omo-Agege said as he declares for Delta governorship seat

2023: What Omo-Agege said as he declares for Delta governorship seat

The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on Thursday officially declared his interest to contest the Delta State governorship seat in the 2023 general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Senator Omo-Agege declared his interest to contest the governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a grand event that was held at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun.

This is even as the ruling APC has vowed to end the 24 years rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State.

Omo-Agege, who said he has “the edge to build a new Delta”, boasted that he has fulfilled all his electioneering campaign promises he made to the people of Delta Central in the 2019 general elections.

Counting his achievements as a lawmaker, Omo-Agege said he has attracted solar street lights to every community in Delta Central as well as renovation of primary and secondary schools across the district.

He added that he has also built ICT centres in schools in the district and facilitated the Federal Polytechnic and establishment of a campus of the Nigerian Law School to the state.

He, however, disclosed that the Federal Government of President Muhammadu Buhari through his efforts and that of the Senator representing Delta North, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi has approved the establishment of a new Federal University of Agriculture at Aboh in Ndokwa East of the state.

Lamenting that Deltans are suffering under the PDP regime of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the Delta Central senator accused the governor of specifically marginalising the people of Ndokwa Nation, Isoko Nation, Itsekiri Nation and Ijaw Nation despite their huge contribution to revenue of the state.

“A time comes in your life when you need to move from your comfort zone. Delta Central is my comfort zone. If I want to run for re-election as a senator in Delta Central over and over again, I am confident they will return me.

“But today, I have decided to step out of my comfort zone and move to bring the same benefit to the whole of Delta State. These opportunities I have brought to Delta Central, I want these opportunities to the people of Delta North and Delta South.

“If we all fold our hands and allow Okowa and co to continue, they will continue to marginalise us. If you go to Delta North today, the Ndokwa Nation made up of Ukwuani, Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East, they contribute so much to the economy of this country but if you go to Ndokwa Nation today, there’s nothing ground.

“Okowa has continued to marginalise the people of Ndokwa Nation. We can’t allow that to continue. If you go to Aniocha and Oshimili areas, there’s no presence of Okowa’s government there. The time has come when you need to take your destiny in your hand and say, enough is enough.

“If you go to Delta South, the Isoko Nation contribute so much to the economy of this state and this country like our Ndokwa brothers, but if you go there, there’s nothing. All you have there is a state polytechnic that was recently upgraded to university just on paper. It’s on paper only. It’s a glorified secondary school. Is that fair? Enough is enough”, Omo-Agege stated.

While further accusing the Governor Okowa-led administration of spending N2 billion every month on political appointees, the governorship aspirant lamented the failure of the PDP government to pay pensioners their retirement entitlement.

According to him, “our parents who gave best parts of their lives in the service of this state; some of them have retired in eight-nine-ten years, up to today, they have not been paid their retirement benefits. Meanwhile, Okowa is busy employing political aides.

“Okowa spends N2 billion every month on these people who do not contribute anything to governance. But our youths who need gainful employment, they will not give them jobs. Enough is enough.

“Therefore, today, the 14th of April, 2022, I, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Obarisi of Urhoboland, offer myself as a candidate for the Office of Governor in Delta State in 2023 on the platform of our great party – All Progressives Congress (APC).”

APC will dislodge PDP from Delta Govt House in 2023 – Govs Yahaya Bello, Hope Uzodinma

Meanwhile, speaking at the declaration rally, Governors Yahaya Bello (Kogi) and Hope Uzodinma (Imo) asked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led PDP Government to prepare to handover to Senator Omo-Agege as the next governor of Delta in 2023.

Taking turns to address the mammoth crowd of APC supporters, Governor Bello of Kogi State charged the people of Delta to vote Senator Omo-Agege, saying he had been tested at the federal level and would make a good governor.

Governor Bello, represented by his Deputy, Chief Edward Onoja, said Delta is lucky to have Omo-Agege as their next governor, adding that Delta Central senator will develop the state and ensure gainful employment for the youths.

“APC will take over Delta State and to take over Delta State, you need the best warrior. Senator Omo-Agege is that warrior. When he entered Senate, he didn’t go to sit as ordinary Senator. He became the Deputy Senate President.

“In 2015, Deltans made ordinary Senator to be governor but in 2023 Deltans will elect a Deputy Senate President as their governor. Omo-Agege is not a small name in this country. Governor Yahaya Bello asked me to tell the people of Delta State to vote Omo-Agege as their next governor in 2023”, Kogi governor said.

Also, Governor Uzodinma in his remark, advised the people of Delta not to miss the golden opportunity of a ‘New Delta’ which Senator Omo-Agege is offering by voting out PDP in 2023.

Uzodinma, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Placid Njoku, boasted that he would join Senator Omo-Agege and the APC to mobilise Deltans to chase away the ruling PDP in the state from power.

Deltans have been suffering under PDP since 1999 – Emerhor

On his part, Delta APC founding leader and former governorship candidate of the party in 2015, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor; said the people of Delta have been suffering since 1999 when PDP took over the governance of the state.

He, however, said the end of the suffering has come, adding that Omo-Agege will liberate Delta from the grip of PDP.

“Since 1999, Delta State has been suffering. Some of us came in since 2013 to try and rescue this state. We have been trying for 10 years now. But now, we have a liberator in Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who has come to rescue Delta.

“Are you seeing the mammoth crowd? Delta is ready to be rescued. Delta suffering has ended. God has brought to us someone to rescue us. Omo-Agege has the capacity to do the job of building a better Delta from 2023”, Emerhor echoed.

APC will take over Delta in 2023 – Chief Ayiri

Also speaking, APC chieftain and Itsekiri leader, Chief Ayiri Emami, stated that APC will defeat PDP in the next governorship election.

Chief Ayiri said APC is battle-ready to ensure that Senator Omo-Agege succeed Governor Okowa in 2023 and called on Deltans particularly Itsekiri to vote for APC.

Ijaw Are Ready To Wait For 2031 Governorship Seat – Micheal Johnny

Meanwhile, an Ijaw APC chieftain in Delta, Chief Micheal Johnny has faulted “2023 Ijaw Governorship Agenda”, stressing that Ijaw have agreed to allow Delta Central to produce the next governor of Delta in 2023.

Chief Johnny, who hails from Gbaramatu in Warri South West, posited that Ijaw of Delta have also agreed to wait till 2031 after Delta Central to produce a governor.

He urged the people of the state particularly Delta Ijaw to vote for Senator Omo-Agege, assuring that APC government will bring massive development to Ijaw communities in the state.

Other dignitaries who attended and spoke at the event include Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chief Frank Kokori, Hon. Paulinus Akpeki, Prophet Jones Erue, Rev Fr. Mario Ozele, Chief Victor Ogiadom, Felix Morka and Blessing Agbomhere.

Others are Chief Ede Dafinone, Chief Hyacinth Enuha, Chief Lucky Esegie, Pastor Otive Igbuzor, Elder Omoni Sobotie, Matthew Omonade Alex Eyengh and a host of other dignitaries.

Recall me after one year if I don’t perform as president – Anyim

Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, a presidential aspirant on Wednesday in Abuja, urged Nigerians to recall him if after one year in office he failed to perform.

Anyim, who intends to contest on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said this while making a presentation to the party’s National Working Committee (NEC) after submitting his nomination form to contest for president.

According to him, his vision is to build a Nigeria everyone will be proud of as he has the experience to make it happen having served as a senate president and as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“The only request I am placing on the table today is that if you give me the ticket of PDP to fly the flag of this party for the general election of 2023,I will go ahead to win the election.

“I will return to government as president of Nigeria and if I run this country for one year, and you don’t see the difference between light and darkness, you can recall me.

“From the vantage positions I have held, I understand the challenges confronting our nation today and I have clarity of what the solutions could be.

“The purpose of my being here today is to present to you my informed pathway to rebuilding and refocusing our country on the part of growth, peace and prosperity.

“I shall outline my understanding of the problems and my evidence-informed pathway to resolving them under three broad categorizations of political, economic and social integration.’’

Anyim said that politically, his administration would consider consensus on the structure of Nigeria, governance system and National ideals or aspiration.

This, he said was because the absence of consensus on these areas accounted for the disunity and mutual suspicion that was threatening the nation presently.

He said that as part of political consolidation process, a platform would be provided for broad-based consultations and frank dialogue on a generally acceptable new foundation for Nigeria.

Anyim said that machinery would be put in place to harvest the views and secure the buy-in of all components of the polity and build consensus on the structure of the federation.

He said it would also include an acceptable governance system and benchmark agreed national aspiration to which all shall commit as consensus building would be the hallmark of his administration.

Anyim said that visionary leadership style would be deployed to respond to the aspirations of people, thereby, ensuring unity of purpose, patriotism inspired and commitment to building the dream Nigeria.

He said that industralisation would be encouraged to drastically reduce importation, improve local production and strengthen the naira among others.

Anyim promised to promote Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and review Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIPR) to make it fit for purpose and ensure it aligns with our growth ambition.

He added that talent and innovations would be the flagship of the knowledge-based component of the economic agenda by targeting to unleash the creativity of the young population.

Anyim said that Nigeria’s mode and factors of production would be repositioned through science and technology to fit into the fourth industrial revolution in all sectors.

He said that presently, the nation was under security and separationist challenges but his government would evolve national integration policies by running inclusive governance that reflected the Federal Character.

The aspirant said he would promote equality of all citizens before the law and protect the independence of the judiciary, adding that strong institutions would be built to promote and protect the sanctity of lives.

He said that women, youth and diaspora Nigerians would be adequately mainstreamed into the national development.

According to him, discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, and religion will be eliminated and citizens will play active roles in policy formulation while upholding the rule of law.

Anyim said that he would abide by the decision of the party on zoning.

According to him, democracy thrives on three certainties which are certainty of tenure, certainty of structure and certainty of process.

“At any time any of these ‘certainties’ is no longer guaranteed, democracy will corrupt justice and enthrone inequity.

“Accordingly, my appeal is that zoning being a fundamental principle of our party should not be jettisoned.

“Democracy, being a system of rules and order, depends on strong institutions for its sustenance and success. When a system can no longer defend its rules, it will enthrone the reign of might as against the rule of law.

`My appeal is that PDP should defend Section 7 (3) (c) of its constitution,’’ he said

In his remarks, the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, said that as at Wednesday afternoon, 17 aspirants comprising 16 males and one female had obtained PDP nomination and expression of interest forms.

Ayu said that this showed the strength and popularity of the PDP as well as its acceptance among Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He assured all the aspirants that the NWC would be transparent and neutral as an umpire, adding that the decision of who would emerge as flag bearer would be determined by ordinary members of the party.

Ayu enjoined all aspirants to work together for PDP to emerge victorious in 2023.

He expressed confidence in the capacity of Ayim to lead Nigeria haven worked as a civil servant, senator, Senate President and later Secretary to the Government of the Federation, adding that the party was lucky to have him.

Mrs Nkoli Mkparu, the Coordinator-General, United for Better Nigeria Initiative (UBNI), said that the group in collaboration with its partners bought the presidential form for Anyim because they believed in his ability to deliver.

“Anyim is the greatest gift given to Nigeria, who Nigerians need at this crucial time because Nigeria is a special country that requires somebody with ability, consistency, stability, humility and the right temperament to manage the nation.

“Right now, the security aspect of Nigeria is very crucial, so we believe that somebody like his excellency will unify the country, provide jobs for youths who are believed to be causing the problems because of restlessness and joblessness.

“His excellency is very futuristic and has the wisdom to create new jobs for our youths so that we can come together and embrace our country, Nigeria can lead the world with someone like his excellency.’’

2023: No going back on date for party primaries – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said there is no good back on the date for political parties to conduct primary elections ahead of the 2023 general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this known on Wednesday at a press conference at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In his text of address, Yakubu revealed that ten political parties have served notices to the Commission for the conduct of their primaries.

“The Commission wishes to reiterate that the dates for all activities in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election, including the conduct of party primaries, are firm and fixed.

“Already, ten political parties have served notices to the Commission for the conduct of their primaries. With 52 days to the last day for the conduct of primaries (i.e. 3rd June 2022), political parties are once again admonished to adhere strictly to all dates in the Timetable, including the nomination of their candidates via the INEC web portal.

“Such nominated candidates must emerge from valid primaries as provided in Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022. This is necessary to avoid the unhappy consequences of any breach of the Commission’s Timetable or the Electoral Act,” the INEC Chairman stated.

TNG reports Yakubu as saying permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) are now ready for collection for persons who registered in the first and second quarters of the continuous voters registration (CVR) exercise.

  • 2023: When and how to get your permanent voters’ card as INEC says PVCs are now ready

2023: When and how to get your permanent voters’ card as INEC says PVCs are now ready

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said permanent voters’ cards are now ready for persons who registered in the first and second quarters of the continuous voters registration (CVR) exercise.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports INEC’s Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this known at a press conference on Wednesday while also revealing how and when registrants can collect their (PVCs) ahead of the 2023 general elections.

According to the INEC Chairman, during the period from 28th June to 20th December 2021, millions of Nigerians commenced their registration online and thereafter scheduled appointments to complete the process physically.

“Millions more visited our State and Local Government offices to register in person without the option of going through the online procedure. For the pre-registration option, 1,014,382 registrants completed the process while 1,509,076 Nigerians registered in-person at our designated registration centres nationwide.

“Furthermore, 671,106 Nigerians submitted requests to update their records, transfer their registration from where they are currently registered to other locations or the replacement of their lost or damaged PVCs,” Yakubu said.

Speaking at the press conference, the INEC boss said that while the number of new registrants is very impressive and demonstrates the eagerness of Nigerians to vote in the forthcoming elections, the Commission has a duty to clean up the data to ensure that only eligible Nigerians are registered.

He said: “As you are aware, the foundation for any credible election rests on the credibility of the Register of Voters. The introduction of the biometric registration of voters in 2011 has helped to sanitise the Register. You may recall that initially, 73,528,040 Nigerians were registered in 2011. Using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), the Commission was able to remove 4,239,923 invalid registrations.

“Consequently, the Register of Voters for the 2015 General Election stood at 69,288,117 voters. Subsequently, some 432,173 new voters were added to the Register during the CVR exercises ahead of the off-cycle Governorship elections in five States (Bayelsa, Kogi, Edo, Ondo and Anambra) from late 2015 to early 2017, bringing the total number of registered voters in Nigeria to 69,720,350.

“You may also recall that preparatory to the 2019 General Election, the Commission, for the first time, embarked on a nationwide CVR exercise on a continuous basis as provided by law. From 27th April 2017 to 31st August 2018, 15,317,872 new voters were registered. Out of this figure, 1,034,141 ineligible registrants were detected and removed from the register to arrive at the figure of 84,004,084 voters for that election”.

Yakubu went further to say that: “Unfortunately, the troubling issue of invalid registration still persists which we detected while cleaning up the latest registration data. As against the AFIS used in previous exercises, the Commission introduced the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) which is a more comprehensive and robust system, involving not just fingerprint identification but also the facial biometric recognition.

“Sadly, it seems that many registrants, either out of ignorance that they do not need to re-register if they had done so before, or a belief that our systems will not detect this infraction, have gone out to register again.

“This is despite repeated warnings by the Commission against this illegal action. In addition, there are also registrants whose data were incomplete and did not meet our Business Rules for inclusion in the register. Both categories i.e. the failure of ABIS and incomplete data constitute invalid registrations. Presently, nearly 45% of completed registrations nationwide are invalid, rising to as high as 60% or more in some States. This infraction happened in all States of the Federation. No State is immune from it.

“These invalid registrations will not be included in the Register of Voters. In our commitment to transparency, the distribution of the registration figures, including the percentages of valid and invalid registrations on State-by-State basis, will be made available to you at this press conference. The same information will be uploaded to the Commission’s website and social media platforms immediately.

“This development is worrisome because of the time and resources expended in handling these cases. Even more disturbing are the strong indications that some of our staff may be complicit in facilitating these infractions, notwithstanding stern warnings.

“Consequently, the Commission is reviewing reports on such staff and has commenced a detailed investigation which may include the prosecution of those found culpable. Specific registrants associated with these infractions by our staff may also face prosecution in line with Sections 22 and 23 of the Electoral Act 2022”.

He used the opportunity of the press conference to request political parties, the media, civil society organizations and the general public to assist the Commission in educating Nigerians about the problem of invalid registration.

“As we have repeatedly explained, if you had at any time in the past registered to vote, you do not have to reregister. If you have registered in the past, you should not get involved in the CVR again unless you have had problems with your PVC or fingerprint recognition during accreditation in any previous election.

“In that case, all you need to do is to revalidate your registration by visiting a designated registration centre to recapture your fingerprints and picture. Other registered persons who may also get involved in the CVR are those whose PVCs are missing or defaced; those whose details need correction and those seeking to transfer from their current places of voting to other locations. These cases do not involve new registration. Apart from these, the CVR is essentially for Nigerians who have attained the age of 18 years and have not registered earlier.

“With our improved systems using the ABIS, the Commission shall continue to clean up the register to eliminate invalid registration and ensure that only those who should be in the Register of Voters are included. It is precisely the introduction of this more robust system that has enabled us to improve our ability to detect these invalid registrants.

“However, we also suspect that some of these invalid registrations may have arisen out of ignorance. Consequently, the Commission is establishing a dedicated Help Desk for people who need information about the CVR. Kindly use the Help Desk if you are in doubt about your registration status or whether you should register or not.

“Furthermore, citizens who have no access to the internet can ask the Registration Officer at the Registration Centre before proceeding. You can contact the Help Desk by phone as well as our various social media handles,” he said.

Availability of permanent voters’ cards (PVCs)

Meanwhile, the INEC Chairman said that after completing the data clean up, the Commission has printed 1,390,519 PVCs for genuine new registrants.

“In addition, 464,340 PVCs for verified applicants for transfer or replacement of cards have also been printed.

“Consequently, a total of 1,854,859 PVCs are now ready. They will be delivered to our State offices across the country over the Easter holiday. They will be available for collection by the actual owners in person immediately after the holiday.

“No PVC will be collected by proxy. I must reiterate that the available cards only cover those who registered in the First and Second Quarters of the exercise,” Yakubu said.

TNG reports the INEC Chairman assured those who registered between January and March 2022 as well as those who are doing so right now that their PVCs will be ready for collection long before the 2023 General Election.

He said that the decision was taken to promote the interests of the party in accordance with the guidelines given to them by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“I am not by virtue of the terms of reference allowed to roll out the content of the resolution because our job is to finish, submit and theirs (NEC) to take decision.

“I believe that it is the NEC that has the statutory rights to release the content of what we have done. So I will officially on behalf of my colleagues make the presentation of submitting the report.”

Elumelu, who added that all members signed the report, disclosed that former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose disqualified himself because of his interest in the presidential election.

Ayu, while accepting the report, assured the committee chaired by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State that their recommendations would be transmitted to PDP NEC for discussion and final decision.

He said that the decision would be made known to party members across the country and all Nigerians who were eagerly awaiting the final decision of the committee.

He commended the committee for doing a great job without rancour, urging them to make themselves available for future assignments for the party.

“We are very proud of the work you have done; we did not hear any rancor. We did not hear anybody even talking about what you discussed.

“Given the sensitive nature of your assignment, if you had already released everything either by disagreement or rancour or anything it will be very difficult for this party, but you showed so much maturity and leadership.

“I believe all members of this great party appreciated the way you have conducted yourselves,” Ayu said.

2023: Saraki, other PDP presidential aspirants settle for consensus arrangement

Meanwhile, at least four presidential aspirants on the platform of the PDP say they will accept a consensus arrangement to position the party for victory in 2023.

The aspirants made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the outcome of their visit to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia in his Umuobiakwa country home in Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) on Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of other aspirants, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said the decision was informed by their determination to make Nigeria better.

He said that the lives and welfare of Nigerians were more important than the individual ambition of every aspirant.

He said said: “Nigerians are going through hardship and insecurity.

“These are the events that are happening in the country that make some of us to see that we are doing the right thing.

“Let me reassure Nigerians that we are very determined and driven by the determination to make this country work.

“If this is the sacrifice that we will make to turn things around in Nigeria, we want to let Nigerians know that we are willing to make it.”

Saraki said that they were in Abia to seek the governor’s support to ensure that the consensus arrangement would work so that PDP would win the general elections.

He further said that Ikpeazu’s encouraging words had inspired and further motivated them to move forward.

Saraki said that this was the first time aspirants would come together on their own to adopt a consensus arrangement.

He said that although the initiative was a tough challenge, they were convinced it would make Nigeria work.

“We are heading for Enugu to see the governor of the state and by the time we have visited Enugu we would have completed the tour of the 19 PDP states and the governors have shown their support,” he said.

Responding, Ikpeazu expressed delight over the development, saying that it had rekindled his hope in the emergence of a new Nigeria.

He described the consensus arrangement as “a commendable and altruistic initiative”.

He said it was borne out of the desire to forge an alliance to transform the nation.

“I want to say that you have my commitment and cooperation to move on and I will do my bit to ensure that all of us come together.

“The survival of our country, interest of the poor masses of the country should come before whatever personal agenda we have.

“I am happy that Nigeria has patriots and leaders, who are capable of putting Nigeria first,” the governor said.

He promised to support efforts aimed at uniting the party and helping it to present a common front during the upcoming elections.

The aspirants included Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Presidential aspirant urges PDP to zone ticket to South-East

However, Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP has appealed to the party to zone its presidential ticket to the South-East.

Anakwenze said this on Tuesday in Abuja shortly after he submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms at the party’s national secretariat.

He said that the south-east was the only zone that had yet to produce the nation’s president since the return to civil rule in 1998.

According to him, the southwest was compensated for the death of Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the 1993 presidential election and the South-East supported this.

“It is time for everybody to support the southeast, the southwest has had its own turn, south-south has had its own turn too.

“So, for equity and fairness, the party’s ticket and presidency should be zoned to southeast,” he said.

He appealed to party stalwarts and delegates to reconsider the issue of zoning for equity and fairness.

“This is why some of us are throwing our hats into the ring to be able to talk to the PDP family and delegates that will come for the congress to consider fairness.

“We have shown strength, commitment, respect, honour and this is the time that PDP need to reconsider the brain that will recover this country from total collapse,” he said.

Anakwenze appealed to Nigerians to support the course for the zoning of the party’s presidential ticket to the southeast.

He pledged to restore Nigeria’s past glory by rebuilding the economic structure and reviving comatose industries, if elected as the president of the country.

Anakwenze promised to put an end to petroleum scarcity by leveraging on the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) through creation of modular refineries in the country.

The PDP has fixed April 25 for the screening of its presidential aspirants.

PDP presidential aspirants seek consensus, not for northern agenda – Saraki

Earlier, a group of PDP presidential aspirants, seeking consensus candidate said on Tuesday that consultations with stakeholders was not about a northern agenda, but about a united Nigeria.

Saraki, who is one of the aspirants, stated this while addressing journalists after a meeting of the aspirants with Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.

The meeting held at the Enugu State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

The aspirants include Saraki, Gov. Mohammed Bala of Bauchi State, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State and a businessman, Muhammad Hayatudeen

Saraki said the group of aspirants, which had been going around the country to promote the need for consensus candidate had been emphasising that it was not a northern agenda.

“When we started about three weeks ago, most of the aspirants we had then were mainly from the north.

“We have now been talking to aspirants across the country because more people have come out in the South and we are all going to meet.

“We are talking about Nigeria. We are not talking about the northern aspirants or southern aspirants.

“I have good news that already, the same move is being made by aspirants in the South and eventually all will meet and see to one consensus; that consensus is a Nigerian that represents all the groups.

“So, I just want to be clear about that; and be reassured it is not about just issue of a northern consensus, not at all; it is a consensus for the PDP and one Nigeria,’’ Saraki stressed.

Saraki described the Abuja meeting as successful and said the four aspirants were talking to colleagues and stakeholders on how to unite all the aspirants to ensure that they create a platform for the party to take over government.

He decried level of insecurity, hardship and high cost of living in the country, saying it was clear that it was only a PDP government that could reverse the trend or rescue the country.

“To do that, we require unity on our side. That is why individually, we have all decided that our interests and ambitions are secondary to that of the party and that of the nation.

“The most important ambition now is how to begin to fix Nigeria and put Nigeria on the right course,” he said.

Saraki added that the aspirants were very committed to ensuring that they stood together on a consensus that would help the party to win the 2023 election.

He said the group also believed that anything that must be done, either in the development of the country or the party, must be based on equity, justice and fairness.

In his remarks, Gov. Ugwuanyi said he believed in justice, equity and fairness, in arriving at a consensus candidate.

  • Yemi Osinbajo mans up and Tinubu’s camp is furious and afraid – By Mideno Bayagbon

Yemi Osinbajo mans up and Tinubu’s camp is furious and afraid – By Mideno Bayagbon

What an interesting and exciting week this young week is turning out to be. It opened with a lot of exciting promises on the political turf. And the star so far has been the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, grabbing all the headlines in both the traditional media and on the social media platforms. A strategically oiled media plan, on the cheap, was unrolled. Deliberately, speculations were fuelled, that finally, the VP will soon be jumping into the political fray, dare the Lion of Bourdilion, man up, and challenge him to the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

They let leak that he will be meeting with all the governors on the APC platform to inform them of his desire to contest the primaries of the party. Then the meeting holds, culminating in a recorded video in which Prof Osinbajo formally declares his intention.

The declaration turns out to be the star declaration so far. Done on the cheap but with maximum media exposure. Not for him the rally in a jam packed stadium, like Transportation Minister, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi did the week before. Not for him also the Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu declaration style. He goes for the simple, modern and adroit use of the media with astonishing results.

For instance, without seemingly spending a Kobo, on Twitter, in less than six hours, there were 345,000 views of his declaration video. It also attracted 27,000 likes, 18,000 retweets and over 3 million impressions. As monitored by TNG reporters, on YouTube, there were 15,000 views within six hours. These are outside the free, wide publicity which all the newspapers and online news platforms gave him. Facebook and Instagram did not fail him too as hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Nigerians, were forced to receive the news of the declaration. Quite impressive.

Something tells me a paragraph is being taken from former President Barack Obama’s campaign strategy notes. Without the traditional caucuses behind his ambition, without endorsements from the established political quarters, especially from his original political family, the Bola Tinubu political machinery in the South West, there seems to be a plan to use the media as a catalyst. The target are the youths who are digital natives in all the social media platforms. I suspect the Vice President does not plan to run the typical campaign. I can decipher that he plans to leverage on the social media to reach the unreached youths, and like Obama, mobilise them to push his campaign to fruition.

But then there is the almighty roadblock: the primaries which are just slightly over a month away. How this plan will mobilise the grassroots and different tendencies in the party which will determine who eventually triumphs to carry the flag of the APC , is still under construction, I assume.

Two things stand between him and his ambition. One, he is more of an academic, a technocrat and religious leader than a politician. Which means, unlike a Bola Tinubu and an Amaechi with well oiled political bases, his political strength lies only on his being Vice President to a poorly performing President, whose support, for now, is doubtful.

Secondly, there is the tiny issue of cash. Billions of them in Naira and other currencies, that he needs to oil and fuel his strategy to garner as superior votes to put him in pole position; and eventual win. Not before now known as a man of means, except there are tangible signals from Aso Rock that he is the man President Buhari has anointed, the opportunistic moneybags who usually throw in humongous cash to back “sure bankers’ will not be available to him. How will he then, without a solid political base and without the billions to buy delegates, be able to confront his former boss, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who some of his close aides have boasted, money will not be a problem, even if it means budgeting more than a billion Naira per state and Abuja. We are talking of at least N37 billion on the day of the primaries. But then a day is indeed a very long time in politics. Who knows, Tinubu who publicly denounced him, two days ago, can still back him, if superior forces intervene!

For now, however, for his temerity in throwing his hat into the ring, instead of queuing behind the Jagaban, he has turned out a leper and an orphan in that circle. Asked about one of his sons, that’s the Vice President, declaring his interest to contest the primaries of the APC for the Presidential ticket, the self acclaimed leader of the APC could hardly conceal his disgust: “I don’t have any son grown up enough to make such declaration” he told journalists.

APC leadership in Lagos, the assumed constituency of both the VP and Bola Tinubu, following their leader’s cue, promptly declared that they do not know VP Osinbajo as their member. The VP is not a member of the APC in Lagos they shouted from the roof top.

One of Tinubu’s attack dogs, Joe Igbokwe, was furious in his reprimand of the VP. He ordered him to withdraw immediately from the race. He said “Let me drop it here for history and posterity: if you are one of the people Asiwaju raised up and you are eyeing the presidency of the federal republic of Nigeria, show respect and withdraw from the race.”

From the opposition, RENO OMOKRI: had the most critical of views on Osinbajo’s declaration. He said; ”Osinbajo’s declaration speech was watery and baseless. First of all, how could he say he is running to “complete the task” that Buhari started? Buhari stated extreme poverty and overwhelming security for Nigeria. Under Buhari, our country’s debt has grown from ₦12 trillion in 2015, to almost ₦50 trillion this year (if the new ₦6 trillion loan requests are granted. If Osinbajo is running to “complete” that, then he is running to completely destroy what is left of Nigeria!

”Osinbajo said he is running to provide jobs for millions. Those were his exact words. The fellow has been in charge of Nigeria’s economy for the last seven years, according to Buhari, who boasted that Osinbajo heads his economic management team . Yet, Nigerians have lost jobs created by other administrations. His job record is FAILURE! Nigeria has less jobs now, than in 2015, and our unemployment rate has increased from 12% in 2015, to 33% according to the National Bureau of Statistics….

”For years, Osinbajo has been posing as an intellectual. So, at the very least, we expected his declaration speech to be filled with his achievements in office. But it was instead filled with promises. Empty promises. Because he and Buhari have no achievements to show for their wasted seven years”

Reno Omokri of course was reacting to the following promises by Professor Osinbajo: “If by the grace of God and the will of the people, I am given the opportunity, then I believe that first, we must complete what we have started; radically transforming our security and intelligence architecture, completing the reform of our justice system focusing on adequate remuneration and welfare of judicial personnel.

“We will work together by the grace of God. The Nigeria of our dreams in a few short years. We will build on the foundation laid by our predecessors. We will need to move, with much speed, intentionality, and perseverance, towards the vision of a prosperous, stable, and secure nation.

“I am convinced beyond doubt that we have the creativity, the courage, the talent, and the resources to be the foremost black nation on earth. Let us now birth the expectations of greatness conceived by generations before us.

“Let us build a Nigeria where the man from Nnewi sees the man in Gusau as his brother, where the woman in Warri sees the woman in Jalingo as her sister, where the love of our nation burns alike in the hearts of boys and girls from Gboko to Yenogoa.

“Where everywhere, in this land, is home for everyone, where our diversities, tribes and faiths unite, rather than divide us.

“Let our tribes become one tribe; the Nigerian tribe, where all are treated fairly, justly and with respect–where all are given equal access to the abundant opportunities that God has bestowed on this nation. It’s time.

There is no doubt the entrance of Osinbajo into the race portends great drama and promises. Could he be the game changer?

  • I contested governorship election 4 times – Atiku

I contested governorship election 4 times – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that he contested governorship election four different times before he finally won in 1999.

The former Vice President made this revelation on Tuesday while having an interaction with leaders of over 200 support groups across the country in Abuja.

Addressing the leaders of the groups, Atiku said that he was delighted that more young people were participating in politics today, adding that his dream is to mentor the young generation and handover his political structure to them.

He urged youths to be consistent and be courageous in pursuing their aspirations.

“It is encouraging that these days I see many young people come to me declaring intentions to run for various political positions, some state assemblies, some national assembly and even some aspiring to be governors.

“The beautiful thing is that this shows that our democracy is being strengthened. I also started early like many of you.

“I started in my late 30s. During our time, our direction was to fight the military and return the country to civil rule.

“In joining politics, you have to be focused, principled and courageous. For example, I contested for the governorship position four times before I was finally elected. That is politics for you. You have to be determined and be courageous,” he said.

Atiku expressed gratitude to leaders of the support groups for the roles that they played during the 2018/2019 election and commended the groups for their discipline and their determination to be better organised than the last outing.

“We are more organised now; it is a reflection of the fact that we are now more experienced and with experience comes more knowledge.

“What that means is that if there was any mistake that we made last time, we are in a better position to avoid such mistakes now”.

Earlier, the National Coordinator of Atiku Abubakar Technical Support Team, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, challenged the members of the group to tour round the country and meet all the stakeholders in the party.

He encouraged them to engage in all necessary lobbying to ensure that the aspiration of Atiku becomes a reality.
