INEC, NBA to commence prosecution of electoral offenders in 2023 general elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will soon commence the prosecution of 1,076 electoral offenders arrested in 35 states across the country during the 2023 general election.

A credible source in the commission on Wednesday told NAN in Abuja that the prosecution would be done in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigeria Police.

The source explained that the NBA Chairman, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, in fulfilment of that pledge, in a recent letter to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, listed 191 lawyers including 16 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), who have accepted to take up cases in the various States free of charge.

The NBA during a recent visit to INEC led by its president pledged to offer pro-bono legal services to the commission for the prosecution of electoral offenders as a service to Nigeria.

Maikyau said that would be done with the assistance of the Police and INEC for diligent prosecution.

The source said 191 case files have been prepared for the prosecution.

A breakdown of the distribution by state reveals that Ebonyi has the highest number of 64 cases, involving 216 suspects.

Edo is second with 22 cases and 80 suspects, while Anambra is third with 12 cases involving 66 suspects.

Kaduna State is fourth with 11 cases and 36 suspects; Adamawa ranks fifth with 10 cases, 17 suspects.

Also Kano, Rivers and Osun states share the fifth position with nine cases each involving 74, 68 and 47 suspects, respectively.

Yobe has the least with just one case file implicating two suspects.

The electoral offences committed range from “culpable homicide and unlawful possession of firearms”, “snatching and destroying of INEC items”.

Others included “being in possession of offensive weapons”, “misconduct at polling units and stealing of election results”.

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, also confirmed that letters of authority have already been prepared and would be issued to the NBA team as soon as possible to commence proceedings on all the cases.

Rotimi, however, said that the NBA returned 26 case files to INEC for onward transmission to the Police because the offences involved did not fall under the electoral offences as defined by the Electoral Act 2022.

He said that the commission was also aware that suspects involved in 22 out of the cases are either at large or were never apprehended.

”The suspects linked to the cases files are in custody, they have been investigated and the necessary evidence against them harvested,” he stated.

  • INEC has nothing to hide about 2023 general elections – Yakubu

INEC has nothing to hide about 2023 general elections – Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained that it has nothing to hide concerning the 2023 general elections contrary to claims in some quarters.

INEC said that it did it possible  best in the election and cannot possibly be hiding anything.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this at the Post Election Review of the 2023 General Elections with Media Stakeholders in Lagos.

Yakubu said there were many positive things that came out of the 2023 elections despite the many challenges.

The chairman admitted that despite the challenges during the last elections, there would be continuous improvement by the commission in conducting elections nationwide.

“This is an opportunity for the media executives in their various organisations to tell us what they have seen and how we can continue to improve the electoral process in the future.

‘” The commission has nothing to hide and it is this type of interaction that we continuously improve on the process for future elections.

“Clearly, there are many positives coming from the general elections and at the same time, we admit that there are many challenges in the last election.

“There are several election litigations at the various elections tribunals nationwide while we should be careful not to touch on issues that are clearly subjudice.”

Yakubu said INEC invited media executives that operate at the state, local governments and community levels that had covered the elections and interacted with Nigerians in their local languages.

He said the commission, in addition to what it did in Abuja in the previous week, would also listen to the executives on what came out of reporters about the elections at local and community levels.

According to him, it is through these interactions and discussions with the media that the commission can widen the scope of consultations on the elections.

Yakubu stated that as part of the review it was undertaking, the commission would like to know what constraints the media experienced right from the process of accreditation, to access to locations of polling units and collation centres during the elections.

He said it would also want to get appraisals on the security arrangements and advise for improvement, going forward.

Yakubu said that the commission may approach the National Assembly to amend the law to accommodate Nigerians that were unable to vote, because of the nature of their jobs.

“For instance, there are many Nigerians that did not have the opportunity to vote on election day simply because our laws say that you can only vote where you are registered.

“So most of the journalists on the election day worked in places other than where they are registered so they didn’t have the opportunity to vote.

“This doesn’t apply only to journalists, it also applies to officials of INEC itself; the regular and ad-hoc officials, including the security agencies.

“So through this kind of interaction, we get recommendations coming from stakeholders and see in what area we are going to approach the National Assembly to amend the laws.”

According to him, the internal review will involve the commission’s regular and adhoc staff including electoral officers and their assistants, head of departments, administrative secretaries, some presiding officers, collation and returning officers.

He stated that after the review, the lessons learnt from the 2023 elections and solutions would be provided to the challenges facing the process of election.

The head of department voter registry and ICT INEC Kaduna, Umar Buhari Ali explained that the review would basically x-ray the successes and failures of INEC in the 2023 general election.

“What we are trying to do is to look at the various factors that contributed to the success stories INEC was able to record during the last election.

” We are also looking at places where we have challenges so that we can improve for better in the 2027 election, saying, this is something the commission does after every election so that it will have a guide towards it’s policy decision making.”

  • Labour Party berates FG for rejecting EU’s analysis on 2023 general elections

Labour Party berates FG for rejecting EU’s analysis on 2023 general elections

The Labour Party (LP) has berated the federal government for discrediting the European Union’s conclusion on the 2023 General Election in the country.

Recall that the EU had in its final assessment and analysis on the 2023 general elections, stated that there were some irregularities in the last elections.

The EU observers stressed that the trust reposed in the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), was damaged during the general election.

In its reactions, the federal government via a statement issued on Sunday by Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Special Duties, described the conclusions of the Electoral Observer Mission as “jaundiced”.

According to the FG, the EU’s submission on the elections were untrue, stating that they should try to be “objective in all their assessments of internal affairs”.

However, the Labour Party, which is currently challenging the outcome of the poll in court, said the FG’s move to reject the EU report was medicine after death.

A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the LP “stands by the position of the EU observation mission, stressing that it has “always said that this election was massively rigged in favour of the APC and their candidate”.

“We are only hoping that the judiciary will dispense justice without fear or favour in the interest of the nation and posterity.

“Nigerians already know the true winner of the 2023 presidential election and no amount of slandering, denial, or rebuttal can change the fact that the party in power has no mandate of the electorate”, the statement added.

POLLS: Air Peace suspends flight operations

Air Peace has announced that flight operations will be suspended on February 25 as a result of the general elections.

However flight operations will resume on February 26, the local airline assured.

Air Peace disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, via its official Instagram handle.

The statement reads, “Members of the public are hereby informed that there will be no scheduled flights on February 25, 2023, due to the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections. Scheduled flight operations resume on Sunday, February 26, 2023.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that general elections will be held in Nigeria on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives. Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is ineligible to run, being term-limited.

POLLS: Air Peace suspends flight operations

    Electoral system
The President of Nigeria is elected using a modified two-round system. To be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive a plurality of the valid vote and over 25% in at least 24 of the 36 states. If no candidate passes this threshold, a second round will be held between the top candidate and the next candidate to have received a majority of votes in the highest number of states.

The 109 members of the Senate are elected from 109 single-seat constituencies (three in each state and one for the Federal Capital Territory) by first-past-the-post voting. The 360 members of the House of Representatives are also elected by first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies.

    Presidential election
With President Muhammadu Buhari having been elected to the office of president twice, he was ineligible for renomination. There was no formal zoning agreement for the APC nomination despite calls from politicians and interest groups such as the Southern Governors’ Forum to zone the nomination to the South as Buhari, a northerner, was elected twice.

The party held its indirect presidential primary on 8 June 2022 in Abuja and nominated Bola Tinubu, the former Governor of Lagos State.[

In mid-June, the APC submitted the name of Kabir Ibrahim Masari- a politician and party operative from Katsina State- as a placeholder vice presidential nominee to be substituted at a later date.

On 10 July, Ibrahim Masari formally withdrew as a vice presidential nominee and later that day, Tinubu announced Kashim Shettima- Senator for Borno Central and former Governor of Borno State- as his replacement.

  • Shettima speaks on why VP Osinbajo does not attend APC presidential campaign

Shettima speaks on why VP Osinbajo does not attend APC presidential campaign

There are speculations flying around that Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo does not attend the presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu because he still hold grudges against the former Lagos state governor.

Osinbajo has been noticeably absent from Tinubu’s presidential campaigns so far, while president Buhari too has only attended a few.

Recall that Osinbajo endured a frosty relationship with Tinubu during the APC presidential primaries in 2022, as followers of the latter believed that the Vice President should have backed his political godfather.

During the APC primaries, some staunch supporters of Tinubu had taggedOsinbajo a traitor, a betrayer and Judas, for daring to stand against the former governor of Lagos State.

One of such supporters, Tolu Babaleye had said: “This is the week that Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ in the Christian calendar. Same week Osinbajo betrayed Tinubu. Same week is not a mere coincidence. May God be with Tinubu in Pilates’ Court.”

Another APC stalwart, Joe Igbokwe, the Special Adviser for Drainage and Water Resources to Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu, also subscribed to the notion of a betrayer.

However, National President of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, Yerima Shettima is not happy with both president Buhari

He said “Is this how we will pay Asiwaju for helping to lift us up? This monumental betrayal has no part 2. I am totally diminished as a mortal who understands very well the meaning and the power of loyalty,” he said then.

Speaking on Osinbajo’s absence, the AYCF President, Shettima, said Tinubu does not deserve the kind of treatment he gets from President Muhammadu Buhari and Osinbajo.

Shettima accused Osinbajo of holding grudges against Tinubu since his defeat at the APC presidential primary election.

He said Buhari and Osinbajo should come out boldly if they are against Tinubu.

He told DAILY POST: “It’s very unfortunate that in recent times things have not been going well; however, Tinubu does not deserve what he’s getting from Osinbajo and Buhari; no matter how bad it is, he has paid his dues and has stood by them. He deserves better than the support they are giving to him.

“If they are truly with him, they should demonstrate it; if they are not, then they should openly come out and say so. When Obasanjo was in power, in 2006, we could see his body language on how he worked day and night to stand by Yar’ Adua.

“He had gone out of his way to campaign for the presidential candidate. Even in the absence of the presidential candidate, Obasanjo was moving around campaigning because he was willing to ensure that his successor came into power.

“This time around, the President and the Vice President are sitting on the fence, even the governors are not sincere.

“Some of these APC governors are not sincere, that is why it would be difficult for the APC presidential candidate, Tinubu, to rely on these governors, they may disappoint him because theirs is to negotiate even with the opposition. He should go down, liaise and be discussing with Nigerians, CSOs, and organisations and not rely on governors.

“Tinubu has less than five governors with him, the others are just supportive. The earlier he moves and changes strategy, the better for him.

“His running mate, Shettima should move and do better than he’s doing in the Northern part of this country; people are not feeling his impact. The 2023 election has gone beyond propaganda.

“There is a crack in the APC because Osinbajo has never campaigned, he has never gone anywhere. He still holds grudges; power is given and taken by God. If truly he’s a man of God, he should have known that what is not yours can never be yours. If it’s not part of his destiny, it can never be his.

“That was how God wanted it, there is no reason to hold any grudges. Look at what Amaechi, Osinbajo, and others are doing; it tells you there is a crack in the APC.

“I’m calling on Tinubu to rise up to the occasion and not to over-rely on those governors.

“He should get down to the people within this short period and see what will happen. If he’s relying on governors, he will be shocked at what will happen. He should change strategy and method by ensuring all his followers are on their feet. For Osinbajo, he has shown that he’s not with Tinubu.”

“2023 elections is the vote of inheritance”- Tinubu tells Ondo people

Tinubu, who was received by a gargantuan crowd in Ondo State on Saturday, said promised to develop the Ondo Deap Sea Port and provide uninterrupted energy if elected as the next president of Nigeria.

In his words: “Ondo is known as progressive state, followed by other states like Ogun, Oyo, and I appreciate our progressives governors. This incoming election is our own, it is the vote of inheritance. It is vote of three in one. Don’t lose your PVCs, your PVCs is your right.

“Our rally today is a signal of our renewed hope for Nigeria, that February 25, you will go and make a wise decision, you will vote massively for me. I’m too sure and very sure that you will vote for APC and that’s why I’m very happy.”

A former Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olaseinde Kumuyi, defected to the ruling party.

Justice Kumuyi defected at the presidential campaign rally held at the Moshood Kasimawo Abiola Democracy Park at Oja Oba in Akure.

He was received by the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who represented National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu.

Senator Omisore, who expressed optimism that the people of Ondo State would vote APC, promised that the party would change the narrative of the country under a Tinubu presidency.

The rally was well attended as the venue was packed full by party supporters.

Chairman of the Ondo APC, Ade Adetimehin, said there was no division in the party in the state.

“Ondo is APC and APC is Ondo. You will see results on elections day. Ondo APC is united. We are well ahead other states. We will produce more votes than Lagos in terms is percentage votes cast.”

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, in his remark, described Tinubu as Nigeria’s incoming president.

Akeredolu said the state would vote massively for the APC. He urged Ondo residents to vote wisely by voting for Tinubu on February 25.

Gov. Wike reveals candidates Rivers voters must shun

As the 2023 General Elections dates draw closer, Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, has urged voters to shun candidates and parties that do not mean well for the state.

The governor, in his 2023 new year broadcast in Port Harcourt, on Saturday, Wike urged Rivers people to vote wisely.

The governor said it was not in the character of his administration to interfere with or limit the constitutional rights of politicians and their parties to hold electioneering campaigns and canvass for votes across the length and breadth of the state.

He said: “But we must be reminded that the laws and regulations restricting open political activities in public schools and residential areas are being implemented to prevent the destructive tendencies and public nuisance usually associated with such events when things go wrong.

“Ours is a state governed by laws, and no person, group, party, or association has the right to disobey the laws of the state managing campaign activities in public schools and expect us to keep quiet.

“Any political party or candidate that wishes to hold campaigns in public schools must comply with the law by simply securing the government’s approval after paying the required security deposit before the rally.”

Wike said anyone or party with strong feelings against the legitimacy of the extant laws was free to approach the Courts for appropriate redress.

He said: “Let it be known that no amount of threat of violence will dissuade us from enforcing these and other laws to keep Rivers State safe, peaceful and secure before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

“Consequently, any person, group, political party or association that dares the resolve of the government on this issue can only have their fingers badly burnt by the legal consequences of their ill-advised actions.”

Wike acknowledged that 2022 was another challenging year for Nigeria due to the dire economic situations that had prevailed for too long.

He, however, noted that Rivers people and residents had every reason to thank God for the prevailing peace, the successes recorded by his administration, and the opportunity to look forward confidently to the promise of a new beginning with the New Year.

He declared that governing Rivers had been a mixed bag of challenges, excitement and fulfillment since 2015.

According to him, at the onset, his administration inherited challenges that looked frightening and overwhelming.

He said: “Every sector was virtually destroyed and required a radical surgical operation to repair, restore and regenerate.

“We quickly rose to meet every challenge with courage and determination to advance and serve the peoples’ best interests in line with our vision and as demanded by our mandate.

“Last year, we delivered as many projects and progress as possible with the resources at our disposal, including trunk A roads, dual carriageways, flyovers, bridges, internal community roads, schools, hospitals and judicial infrastructure across the length and breadth of Rivers State.”

He said with the expected seamless succession in the governance of the State in 2023, people of the state could be more hopeful for the continuity that needed to consolidate the progress on the concrete foundations already laid that would take Rivers State to the next level of sustainable peace, security, development and prosperity.

Wike said his administration had worked hard with the security agencies to keep Rivers State peaceful, safe and secure throughout 2022.

According to the governor, the state government spared no effort, resources or commitment to achieve the peace and sense of security everyone now enjoys.

He said: “Going around the state, we can see several private and public investment projects in Port Harcourt and other places, indicative of the healthy state of our economy, investors’ increasing confidence and the economic benefits derived from the modern infrastructures we have provided, which has no equal across the country.

“It is barely five months for us to exit the stage for our successor, but our commitment to more project delivery and better the lots of our people is still strong.

“I assure you, therefore, that we shall endeavour to complete almost all ongoing projects, including the ones now being flagged-off, before the end of our tenure.”

The governor thanked God and the good people of Rivers State for their immeasurable support of his government from the beginning to now.

“There is no way we could have achieved all we have done for Rivers State without your support, cooperation and ceaseless prayers, for which we shall remain eternally grateful”, he said

Wike also extended profound gratitude to all the security agencies for working with the State government, and working round the clock under challenging conditions to fight crime and keep Rivers State safe and secure.

He said: “Today, no one can deny that Rivers State is one of the safest with much lower crime rates in our country, which is the direct result of your firm and practical commitment to your security responsibilities to the State and its people.”

“Let me assure you that we shall continue to provide the motivational and logistical support you need to effectively secure lives and property throughout Rivers State at all times.”

Chatham House: Tinubu insists his records are consistent, promises student loan

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu on Monday insisted that his birth, academic, and professional records are consistent.

Tinubu stated this during an address to members of the Chatham House in London, the United Kingdom on the topic: ‘Nigeria’s 2023 Elections: Security & Economic Development and Its Foreign Policy Imperatives’.

Although there has been controversy over records of his early days in the public domain, the former governor of Lagos State stressed that he has had a very good exposure in life and his school records were consistent and there for every one to see, insisting he was born on March 29, 1952.

“Equally, it remains the same, Deloitte, Chicago State University where I graduated from has attested to that. Now, I can announce that I have received my original replacement degree certificate from them,” said.

Tinubu also unveiled some of his strategies to fix the Nigerian economy and revive key sectors like defense, education, and technology.

He told his audience that he would prioritise education, by providing student loans and reforming the Almajiri educational system practiced in northern Nigeria.

“There will be student loans. We are going to reform the Almajiri system. We’ll equally build more schools, recruit more teachers and train them,” Tinubu said.

He added that his government will also introduce technology hubs for youths to acquire digital skills. “Youths can even develop technological languages on their own and make a better 21st-century approach to governance in Nigeria,” he said.

However, during the Question and Answers session that followed his address, Tinubu delegated some of his allies to respond on his behalf.

Some of those who answered questions on Tinubu’s behalf include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; APC national women’s leader, Dr Betta Edu; former Commissioner for Finance in Lagos, Wale Edun; and the Director of Strategic Communication of the  APC Presidential Campaign Council Dele Aleke, amongst others.

According to the former governor of Lagos State, he adopted the delegation method “to show the team and the capacity that we have”.

El-Rufai answered questions on security, saying banditry, terrorism, separatism, and oil theft require a new approach including increasing the number of security operatives.

“The numbers must change and the Bola Tinubu administration already has a blueprint which is embedded in our action plan to address this. We will scale up the numbers of the armed forces. We’ll ramp up not only the numbers but the training and the equipment,” the Kaduna governor said.

Gbajabiamila also responded to a question on the strategies of Tinubu on defence, while the APC national women’s leader answered a question on healthcare delivery, amongst others.

Aleke, on his part, answered question on how Tinubu plans to lift Nigerians out of poverty if elected. “The key to his policy for increasing economic growth is to enable the private sector to make the investment that will increase productivity, grow the economy, create the jobs, and reduce poverty,” he said.

Reno Omokri stages protest against Tinubu, but see the blunder that has Nigerians talking

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri on Monday led a protest aimed at harassing the All Progressives Congress’ presidential flagbearer Bola Ahmed Tinubu out of London.

Tinubu is in London to address the British Royal Institute on the 2023 general elections, with a focus on national security, economic and foreign policy imperatives.

Tweeting about the protest on Monday, he wrote: “Tinubu will never forget the protest we just pulled off at Chatham House. He was disgraced and could not get out of his car. He had to run away. The #HarassTinubuOutofLondon Protest Against Drug Lord Tinubu at Chatham House was a resounding success! We shook the drug lord Asiwaju”.

However, some Nigerians were quick to spot the message on one of the placards which showed support for Tinubu, and have called him out.

@Tony_OBG tweeted: “Little double-edged protest you carried out with a few number of people literally showed how disorganized, mischievous and confused that you are. The banners held by participants were in favour of Tinubu. How come you still rally for Atiku. @renoomokri pick a side.”

Another user. Kunle Gazali Sefiu commented: “You were seriously disgraced, they killed your negative intention and overshadowed you and your paymaster”.

However, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that Tinubu addressed the British Royal Institute.
