  • #DemocracyDay: ‘Get your PVC’ ahead 2023 general elections, Saraki advises Nigerians

    Former President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has called on Nigerians across the nation to get their PVCs ahead of the 2023 General Election.

    TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement issued by his Media Office in Abuja in commemoration of Democracy Day, Saraki, acknowledged the sacrifice of Nigeria’s past heroes, who have contributed to the development of the nation’s democracy, and called on all Nigerians of voting age to ensure that they exercise their civic duty by voting next year.

    The statement read:

    “As families across Nigeria settle in to commemorate the significance of #DemocracyDay, we all must remember the immeasurable sacrifice of our heroes — as well as celebrate the courage, and persistence of all Nigerians.

    “This is because, throughout this oft-imperfect journey to institutionalize stronger democratic values in all aspects of our lives, there have been hiccups, yet, Nigerians have always demonstrated an unwavering commitment to forge a better, stronger, safer, and more prosperous nation.

    “In this regard, as we observe today, remembering that the 2023 General Elections are just around the corner, I ask all Nigerians of voting age to ensure that they have their PVCs to exercise their civic responsibility by participating in the election of our leaders at the state and federal levels.

    “It is my deepest prayer, that as we work to fix Nigeria by the election of intentional and decisive leaders next year, our nation and all its people will experience the much-needed prosperity and peace that all Nigerians have been clamouring for. Happy #DemocracyDay!

  • Akpabio emerges Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial candidate

    Former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has emerged the winner of the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial primary under the All Progressives Congress  ( APC) platform.

    The first primary conducted on May 28, 2022, for the senatorial district was cancelled following security infractions during the primary.

    Recall that Akpabio was one of the presidential aspirants of the party but stepped down for Bola Tinubu at the dying minutes of the Special convention.

     

    However .Akpabio won the rerun poll having polled 478 votes, while Sir Joseph Akpan had only one vote, and the former Deputy Inspector general of Police who initially won the first primary had three votes.

    Out of the 540 delegates for the rerun primary, 512 were accreditated to vote while eleven votes were voided.

    Speaking on Thursday night at the Godswill Akpabio Empowerment Centre in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, shortly after he was declared the winner, Akpabio thanked the delegates for their support and for finding him worthy to fly the flag of the party in the 2023 senatorial election

    “I thank the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district for finding me worthy to be given another opportunity to contest for a senatorial seat in the Senate. I recall when you gave me the first mandate in 2015 to 2019, I recall that there is no senator ever that did the kind of empowerment I did for you.

  • Sowore wins AAC presidential candidate ticket

    Popular critic of the Buhari-led administration, Omoyele Sowore, has emerged as African Action Congress (AAC) consensus presidential candidate.

     

    He was unanimously elected without opposition by members of the party as the AAC presidential flagbearer in respect of the 2023 general elections.

    The news was shared by the AAC, through its official Twitter handle.

     

    Similarly, an elated Sowore announced his triumph via his verified Twitter handle: “I have been validly elected by affirmation as the Presidential Candidate of the @aacparty # wecantcontinuelikethis.”

     

    Sowore contested for presidency during the 2019 general elections, but had a poor performance.

     

    He has always criticized successive Nigerian governments, accusing them of corruption and incompetence.

     

    The Media entrepreneur and social activist, Omoyele Sowore, on Thursday, June 09, 2022, announced that he is stepping down as National Chairman of the AAC.

     

    Sowore made this known during the National Convention of the party in Abuja, shortly after he was announced the consensus candidate.

     

    A new Chairman is expected to be elected soon.

     

    Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner, and founder of an online news agency, Sahara Reporters.

     

    He contested in the 2019 presidential election.

     

    On 3 August 2019 Sowore was arrested by the Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) for alleged treason after calling for a protest tagged RevolutionNow.

     

    He was arrested again and beaten during a protest in Abuja on January 1, 2021.

     

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Sowore was injured by a police officer during a protest in Abuja on May 31, 2021.

     

    The activist is from Ese-Odo, Ondo State in South West Nigeria. Sowore was born in the Niger Delta region of the country (comprising six states in South-South region, Ondo, Abia and Imo States) where he was also raised in a polygamous home with sixteen children.

     

    He studied Geography and Planning at the University of Lagos from 1989 to 1995 with his academic program extended by two extra years after being expelled twice for political reasons and student activism.

     

    Sowore was the President of the University of Lagos Student Union Government between 1992 and 1994 where he was involved in anti-cultism and anti-corruption advocacy.

     

    He holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbia University.

  • 2023: PDP Governors hold closed door meeting with Atiku in Abuja

    People’s Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is currently having a meeting with the party governors in the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

    The meeting commenced few minutes after the emergence of former Lagos state Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), for the 2023 elections.

    It was gathered that top of the meeting’s agenda is how to pick a strong running mate for Atiku ahead of the 2023 general elections.

    Other issues might also has to do the constitution of the Presidential campaign council, the emergence of Tinubu and strategies towards uprooting the APC from power in 2023.

    The attendees are Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri, Bauchi Governor, Bala Muhammed, Rivers Nyesom Wike, and  Benue gov, Samuel Ortom, Sokoto state Governor Aminu Tambuwal and his Oyo state counterpart Seyi Makinde.

  • 2023: PFN to mobilise one million votes in Cross River State

    Cross River State Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has said it would mobilise a minimum of one million votes for any candidate it endorses in the 2023 elections.

    made the promise during the 2022 PFN Pentecost Service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Calabar.

    He said the commitment and backing of key leaders of the Pentecostal churches in the state have been secured to ensure the goal is achieved.

    Ekwork noted that the objective is a task that can be accomplished, considering the votes that the winner of the 2019 governorship election in the state had.

    He stated that the figure is something that the mega church can easily produce with their membership strength and mobilisation ability.

    The Chairman urged all members in the state to take advantage of the ongoing voters registration exercise and ensure they register to vote in the forthcoming elections.

    The guest speaker at the event, Bishop Curtis Fianu’s message titled, ‘Power above Powers.’

    Bishop Fianu charged believers in Christ to take advantage of the Power of Pentecost to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and do legitimate signs and wonders.

    “With the power of the Pentecost, there is nothing that is beyond your ability to accomplish. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and as such, go ye out there and perform signs and wonders in the name of Christ through who we have been saved,” he charged the congregation.

    Ministers, church leaders and members also prayed for the state and Christendom in general at the event.

    The chairman of the planning committee, Pastor Victor Ovat, thanked the church leaders and members for mobilising massive attendance at the event and expressed belief that all were richly blessed at the occasion.

  • I will be ready from day one, Osinbajo tells delegates

    Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has urged delegates at the 2022 APC Special National Convention to vote for him, as he has all it takes to hit the ground running when elected President of Nigeria in the 2023 general elections.

    Osinbajo made the call at the on-going 2022 APC Special National Convention holding at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

    “While at the side of President Muhammadu Buhari, I have seen first-hand the nuances and complexities of the challenges that confront us as a nation.

    “One thing is certain, our circumstances will not afford the next leader of our party any time to learn on the job.

    “In discharging my duties as Vice-President, I have been prepared in the most profound ways for the task that lies ahead and I will be ready from day-one.

    “We stand today on the threshold of history. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, so much depends on so few of us. The future of our children compels us and compels all of you as distinguished delegates to vote right tonight,” Osinbajo noted.

    In the lead-up to the exercise, 28 presidential hopefuls had picked the nomination and expression of interest forms, but five of them later pulled out of the race and only 23 aspirants appeared before the APC presidential screening committee led by the party’s former chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun.

    However, in the course of the convention, seven of the remaining 23 aspirants announced their decision to voluntarily step down their ambition for the former governor of Lagos state Bola Tinubu.

    Those who stepped down include: Ajayi Boroffice, Demeji Bankole, Abubakar Badaru, Olukayode Fayemi, Ibikunle Amosun, Godswill Akapbio and Uju Ken-Ohanenye.

    Altogether, 2, 322 delegates will vote at the on-going convention for the APC’s flagbearer who will represent the party at the 2023 general election. Three delegates  have been selected from each of the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria to make up the total number of delegates.

     

  • Look out for a youthful candidate – MKO Abiola’s son to APC

    In a Twitter post with the handle @AbdulMKOAbiola on Saturday, the son of late Chief MKO Abiola, Mr Abdul Abiola, urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to look for a youthful Presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 General Elections.

    According to him, “I urge the APC to look out for a youthful candidate during the June 6th Conventions. We need innovative and representative policies to rebuild Nigeria”.

    Abiola said he was concerned about where the country was being driven to, adding that there was need to consolidate and build capacity.

    “We must all consolidate and build capacity. The youth shouldn’t just participate in elections, but must also have the opportunity to run key offices,” he said.

    Newsmen reports that the APC convention is slated for June 6 and 7 where the party will choose its presidential flagbearer.

    He said there was need to service the economy through youthful democracy, adding that a younger President would ensure this came to fruition.

  • Oyo lawmaker Peller reveals assassination attempt on his life

    The lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola federal constituency under the auspices of All Progressive Congress (APC),Hon. Shina Abiola Peller, has revealed that there was an attempt to assasinate him.

    The lawmaker said that some persons   attempted to assassinate him on his way from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to Oke Ogun geo-political zone of the State on Sunday.

    Peller, who is an indigene of Iseyin in Oke-Ogun geo-political zone  made his position known via a statement he signed and made available to pressmen on Monday .

    The lawmaker who is in the race for the of Iseyin in Oke-Ogun geo-political zone in the All progressive congress (APC) aslo mentioned that the senatorial election in the district never held.

    He said that the APC primaries ought to have been held on Saturday, and insisted that the election could not be held due to selfish interest of some bad elements in the APC.

    He explained that his life was being threatened because he was protecting the interest of his people from the Oke Ogun geo-political zone.

    Peller called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the security agencies to call Senator Teslim Folarin to order.

    He insisted that people will hold Folarin accountable if anything happened to him, his family or his aides.

    Peller said, “There have been calls from loved ones, supporters, close associates and family about the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) Oyo North Senatorial Primaries, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday, 28th May, 2022 at the Iseyin District Grammar School (IDGS), Iseyin, as well as assassination attempt on my life.

    “This statement will, therefore, state the true picture of what actually transpired. The APC primaries ought to have been held on Saturday peacefully and transparently, but couldn’t hold due to selfish interest of some bad elements within the party who are determined to impose a candidate on all.

    “So having failed in their attempt to manipulate the primaries on Saturday, they unconstitutionally moved it to Saki on Sunday, and they were able to succeed in carrying out their kangaroo primaries with fake delegates’ list under the protection of hoodlums who had been massively mobilized to the venue.

    “My life is seriously being threatened just because I am trying to protect the interest of my dear people from the Oke Ogun region. I am using this opportunity to call on President Muhammadu Buhari, relevant stakeholders and security agencies to call Senator Teslim Folarin and his evil machinery to order, as people will hold him accountable if anything happens to me, my family or my aides.”

  • Wike accuses North of hijacking the country’s political system

    Rivers state governor  Nyesom Wike has frowned at the system being operated in the country that always gives power to the North,adding that the Northerners have hijacked the country’s political system.

    Wike posited that he wouldn’t allow himself to be treated like second class citizen in his own country.

    Wike, made this statement on Monday to the people of  Rivers state when he  returned to the state after  finishing second behind Alhaji Abubakar  in the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential primary election held in Abuja.

    Lamenting the outcome of the election, Wike said the North should not claim ownership of the country, saying Nigeria does not belong to a particular geo-political zone.

    He said, “We have all it takes to do whatever we want to do. It is a matter of you to be fruitful. We cannot answer second class citizens in Nigeria.

    “We just used this one to tell them that enough is enough. We made them not to sleep, we made them not to eat, we made all of them from wherever they think they are coming from to know that there is somebody who can take them on.

    “This country does not belong to one particular zone. If people are afraid of talking, it is their business. I cannot be a second class citizen in my country.

    “They just want somebody they can control, somebody that will do whatever they want him to do, I will never be a party to that. The only people that can control me are Nigerians, not the few people that want to remain in power since the military regime”.

    Popular comedian, activist and Skit Maker Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has stated that he will never support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

    The comedian said that everyone has the right to support any party of their choice but stressed that he would rather support and unknown party and pray it becomes a force.

    Macaroni, made this revelation known on his verified twitter page on Monday, adding that both APC and PDP cannot change situations of things in the country.

    According to him, “Everyone has the right to support any party they wish to. I will never support PDP or APC!! Insult me all you like, that is my choice.

    “I will join another party and hope that the party can one day also become a force!! For things to change, the foundation must be right!!

    “This has always been my stand and I have said it here severally. If we want things to change, we can’t continue recycling.

    “If everyone is tired, let us in our numbers identify with another party and take back the country from those that have been ruling for donkey years.

    “Pay no attention to those who ridicule the idea of another party. It is definitely not going to be easy. And the change in power won’t happen once. But we must begin from somewhere. If the people are united, the people are unstoppable!!”

    In a previous post on twitter, Macaroni had castigated Babajide Sanwo-olu led Lagos state government over the endsars crises.

     

    His tweet reads: “Na under this government dem kill innocent protesters!! It was under this same government that I and others were brutalized and dehumanized.

    “Police dey beat me dey even ask me say why I dey disturb Mr Governor. So again, I say, this is the worst govt Lagos state has had!”
