2023 Election: INEC cautions political parties against violence

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has cautioned political parties and their supporters against violence, saying it could further complicate the security situation in the country.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman, INEC said this at the Training of Master Trainers on Election Technology for the 2023 General Election on Tuesday in Abuja.

Yakubu expressed sadness over recent clashes among party supporters in some states, describing it as worrisome.

“Even as the commission is working hard to ensure a credible process in the forthcoming elections, reports of clashes among parties and their supporters in some states of the country during the ongoing electioneering campaign are worrisome.

“So too is the reported denial of access to public facilities for parties and candidates in some states of the federation.

“Let me caution parties and their supporters to focus on issues and steer clear of attacks on each other.

“These are not only violations of the Electoral Act, 2022, but also negate the voluntary commitment by all political parties and candidates to the letter and spirit of the peace accord signed about three weeks ago under the auspices of the National Peace Committee (NPC),” he said.

“Parties, candidates and their supporters should not by acts of commission or omission further complicate the prevailing security situation in the country.’’

The chairman said that a peaceful electioneering campaign was critical to the conduct of peaceful and credible election.

He said that INEC would continue to monitor the situation closely and would convene a meeting with leaders of political parties next week to discuss among other issues the imperative of peaceful campaigns and equal access to public facilities.

“In the same vein, the commission will also meet with the security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) next week,” he said.

    2023 elections: Tinubu’s chances in North-East predicted

The North-East Coordinator of the Tinubu Support Organization, Gov. Muhammad Yahaya of Gombe, says the chances of APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu in the region in the 2023 General Elections are very high.

Yahaya said this on Saturday in Minna when he visited ex-Nigerian leaders, retired Generals, Abdulsalam Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida.

“Our chances in the north-east are very high indeed.

”We are strong in our resolve to win the 2023 General Elections and we shall succeed.

“It does not matter that the PDP presidential candidate is from North-East. Both Tinubu and Atiku are all my brothers.

”Nigeria is one and we are struggling to maintain it as a united and indivisible country.

“It doesn’t matter where they come from, what we need is the best for Nigeria,” Yahaya said.

Speaking about his visit to Minna to pay a visit to the elder statesmen and check on their health especially Abdulsalami who is just recuperating.

Yahaya said: “Abdulsalam is our father and elder statesman.

”Knowing him has been a blessing to us. I came to greet him as he recovers from his recent ailment.

” I pray that God will continue to see him through his life. “

He said that the two former leaders were carrying out their duties in guiding and advising the people on how to live together as one, saying that their efforts should be applauded.

Speaking about the state of insecurity across the country,  Yahaya, said that the state has been able to maintain its peace amidst diversity.

This, he said, was because the people had realized their differences early and worked to address them.

“In Gombe, you will find that some families have both Christians and Muslims,

” it is a cosmopolitan settlement and a small Nigeria.

“We realized our differences early on and seek to address them.

” We have tried to maintain peace and understanding in the spirit of nationhood and brotherhood”, Yahaya said.

2023 Elections: APC ‘ll triumph in South-East – Uzodimma

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo state, says the All Progressives Congress (APC), will triumph in the South-East in the 2023 general election, because it is the only party with structures in all the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the country.

Uzodimma, also the Chairman of APC Presidential Campaign Council in the South-East, said this at a seminar organised by the party for its candidates in Owerri.

”APC is already winning and will win in the South-East because APC is the only political party that has party structure at the polling units and booths in all 774 LGAs of the country, “ he said.

Uzodimma said that the seminar was aimed at planning for a successful electioneering campaign for 2023 poll.
“The participants must carry others along as they cannot lead or win elections in isolation,” he said.

He said that the South-East has every cause to appreciate what President Muhammadu Buhari has done for the zone in his almost eight years as the President of Nigeria.

He listed the president’s achievements in the South-East to include the second Niger Bridge and the rehabilitation of the Federal Highways in the zone.

Others were the establishment of a Naval Base in Oguta LGA of Imo as well as the on-going reconstruction of 200 bed hospital at Imo University Teaching Hospital Orlu by NNPC, among others.

He cautioned members of the party against deceit by groups who often claim to support the South-East Presidency after they failed to support aspirants from the zone at the presidential primaries of the APC.

“The Igbo people have been a victim of mistaken identity. There is the need for the South-East to take their destiny in their own hands because if you don’t say I am, nobody will say you are,” he said.

Newsmen reports that the seminar was attended by executives and members of the APC across the South-East as well as present and former political office holders of the party.

2023 poll: Internal dispute won’t affect PDP – Ologunagba

The National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, says the current internal disputes won’t affect the party’s chances at the 2023 General Elections.

Ologunagba stated this when he spoke with journalists in Abuja, saying that the misunderstanding would soon be resolved.

He said that the party was working toward unveiling its national campaign council for 2023 presidential election.
“The PDP is alive. We are active and we are working hard on our mission statement.

“We are working on our campaign council, in a couple of days it will be unveiled for the people to see.
“Irrespective of what we are reading in the newspaper, I can tell you that PDP is firm and ready for the 2023 general elections.

“We tell our members and Nigerians that the PDP is here and the darkness is going and the countdown has started,” Ologunagba said.

He said that in spite of the internal wrangling, all party members and leaders were committed to addressing Nigeria’s challenges including that of the economy, security, ASUU and others.

“The key is this, the entire members of this party, leaders and stakeholders agreed on one issue, that Nigeria is the main issue and that we must rescue the country.

“We all agreed on this issue, including Gov. Nyesom Wike who we considered as an important member of this party,” he said.

Ologunagba added that the party respected the views and contributions of all Nigerians in achieving its mission.
He also said that the mass defection of politicians from other parties to PDP was a pointer to the fact that it was connected to the masses.

“In the last four months you have witnessed a lot of defection into PDP which shows our connection with the people and you saw the impacts on recent elections.

“Our membership is growing and people are connecting with us.

“What this signifies is that the PDP is alive to its responsibilities to Nigerians and we are focused on the mission to rescue Nigeria,” he said.
