  • 2023: Muslim-Muslim ticket will deepen the nation along religious lines – ACF former Secretary-General

Mr Anthony Sani, the former Secretary-General of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF),  warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 Presidential Elections, adding that a Muslim-Muslim ticket will deepen the nation along religious lines.

Sani gave the advice while interacting with some newsmen on Monday in Jos.

According to him, to promote of justice and fairness, it is natural and logical for the APC to pick its vice-presidential candidate from the northern part of the country, but that fellow should be a Christian from the region.

He maintained that running a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidential election would negate the principle of federal character as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“I don’t think the choice of a running mate for the APC presidential candidate should be a problem because the constitution is clear about the principle of federal character that no group should dominate because such will not promote unity.

“So, for fairness and justice, since Sen. Bola Tinubu,  the presidential candidate of APC is a Muslim from the southern part should pick a Christian from the northern part of the country as his running mate.

”A Muslim-Muslim ticket will not augur well for the unity of the country because the Christians in the northern part may feel marginalised and it is also not good for our democracy,” he advised.

Sani called on Tinubu to exhibit his statesmanship and nationalistic character by ensuring that the right was done in the choice of his running mate.

He also advised those advocating for a  Muslim-Muslim ticket to desist from such a move in the interest of unity, fairness and justice.

  • 2023 Presidency: Tinubu speaks on choosing a running mate

Former Lagos Governor and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said he has a right to pick his running mate.

The national leader of APC said the his choice of vice president is in his pocket already.

Following Tinubu’s victory in the APC presidential primary election, there has been speculation over who he will pick.

Tinubu is burdened about shopping for a Christian Northerner which has limited his choices.

Recall that there is an unwritten laws in the APC’s constitution that states that a Muslim-Muslim ticket cannot fly.

Speaking after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House on Thursday, Tinubu was asked to reveal where he was leaning towards.

    “I won’t tell you that.

“That is my right, it’s in my pocketbook,” the former Governor of Lagos replied.

Tinubu, who polled 1,271 votes to defeat 13 other contenders, also praised Buhari for not “tinkering” with the presidential primary.

  • 2023 presidential election: Tinubu’s emergence best choice for Nigeria — Zamfara APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Zamfara chapter has congratulated Bola Tinubu for emerging the party’s flag bearer for the presidential election at the party’s special convention.

According to the party, delegates made the best choice for Nigeria.

This is contained in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity secretary, Yusuf Idris in Gusau on Thursday.

Idris described Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election as a welcome development.

“The state APC under the leadership of Tukur Danfulani commends the delegates across the country that participated in the primaries and made the best choice for Nigeria.

“The former governor of Lagos State and leader of our great party, has overtime demonstrated leadership prowess through the mentoring of many prominent Nigerians to exalted positions.

“We are confident that the party is on the right path of success in the coming 2023 general elections.

“Tinubu had set up a strong development plan for Lagos as its two times governor which the state is still benefitting from as the subsequent leadership is being handled by his beneficiaries.

“We are very confident that if such a committed leader takes over as president, Zamfara will be part of the early beneficiaries of the administration.

“This will significantly address the issue of insecurity and bring it to a conclusive end.’’

The statement also quoted Danfulani as commending “President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing internal democracy in the party which demonstrated his earlier stand of not imposing or anointing any candidate’’.

“We appreciate the effort by national APC chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu for managing the challenges up to the level of conducting free, fair and credible convention acceptable to all meaning Nigerians.

“We wish to particularly commend APC northern governors for coming together to support the shifting of the mantle of the nation’s leadership to the South.

“We appreciate them for supporting unity, peace and stability in the party which led to Tinubu’s emergence as the best candidate.’’

  • 2023 : PDP knocks Tinubu, says he’s no match for Atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday watered down the emergence of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential flagbearer.

PDP stated that Bola Tinubu is no match for  their own flag bearer Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

This was contained in a statement  signed and released by its spokesman, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, shortly after Tinubu’s emergence on Wednesday.

The statement read in part “Our party also sympathizes with Asiwaju for embarking on a journey to nowhere as he is no match for PDP’s more popular, more competent and more prepared presidential candidate, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, the unifier and the people’s choice, who defeated President Buhari fair and square in the 2019 presidential election.

“Asiwaju will soon realise that Nigeria is not one of his acquired estates or fiefdoms and that the Nigerian people are not his political string-puppets and retinue of lackeys, from whom he bought the APC presidential ticket.

“Asiwaju will also soon realise that Nigerians hold him responsible for his self-confessed role in installing the failed Buhari-led administration that subjugated the people, brought excruciating economic hardship, acute poverty, bloodletting, terrorism, mass killings, promoted disunity, tribalism and nepotism, lawlessness, massive treasury looting and unpardonable life-discounting experiences to our country.

“It is indeed reprehensible that Asiwaju, after being handed an APC flag that refused to unfold in recognition of the gloomy times of the APC, did not demonstrate any form of remorse for the injuries he engineered and caused our nation in the last seven years.

“His failure to express empathy for the victims of violence, kidnapping, mass killings and acts of terrorism, especially the recent gruesome attack in a sacred place of worship, St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo in Ondo State serves as a foretaste of the big cover up and harrowing experience that Nigerians will face, God forbid, should Asiwaju emerge as president in 2023.”

Reacting to  Tinubu’s speech, PDP said that the speech exposed his lack of capacity and presence of mind.
  • 2023: APC Govs Begin Rallying around Osinbajo

Few days after President Muhammadu Buhari indicated a template for his successor in the forthcoming APC Presidential Primaries, Governors of the ruling party are beginning to rally behind the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who is believed to fit the President’s description.

As at last night several of the APC Governors have been seen in the Villa meeting with the VP and also the Chief of Staff to the President in what sources say is a move likely to result in a Consensus presidential candidate for the ruling party.

Governors cited in the Villa between Wed and today include the following those of Kano, Ogun, Ekiti, Gombe, Nasarawa, and Ebonyi States

A clear majority of the 22 governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), appear to have agreed on supporting the candidature of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of the party’s long awaited presidential primaries on June 6.

Indeed, more Northern Governors including Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa and Gombe are said to be opposed to any idea of a Northern Presidential candidate for APC.

The governors who held series of meetings at the Kebbi State Governors Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja on May 31, after their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, were initially deadlocked on who to suport and while Governors like Kebbi and Jigawa pushed the idea of Northern candidate, the idea met with stiff resistance among the majority of the Governors.

However, after reconvening, a top source in the know, hinted that the governors have agreed that the Presidency of the party should be zoned to the South and that the candidate should be Prof Osinbajo.

According to an impecable source in the Villa, the governors failed to reach an agreement on a candidate in their first meeting because different governors were working for different aspirants and they were all pushing for their aspirants to be accepted based on a North- South divide.

Said the source ” the heroes of this whole thing are the Governors of Borno, Nasarawa and Gombe who even though are from the North, argued that the VP from the South fits the bill perfectly. Kaduna Governor and Borno Governors also of the same view but Kaduna Governor has not been seen in the Villa this week. He was represented by his deputy at the meeting with the President on Tuesday.”

The source said that some governors had first insisted that the party’s Presidency should be zoned to the North because the main opposition party had settled for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at their convention.

“It was a very heated argument between the governors. Some governors wanted a Northern candidate to challenge the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate but some other northern governors kicked against it. They said that the it is morally right for power to return to the South.”

The source noted that, “The governors represented different interests at the meeting and were all pushing for their candidate but there were more governors who were loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari and who wanted to reciprocate the President’s gesture.

“They were others who also insisted that Mr VP was the most popular candidate based on the feedback that the governors got from delegates in their states and they were almost certain and very confident the he would defeat candidates from other parties including Atiku.

According to an aide of one of the governors present at the meeting, certain governors were asked to reach out to some other notable aspirants to urge them to step down for the VP.

“It was indeed a difficult call, as some governors were asked to reach out to their candidates to relate the choice of the governors and to also tell them to step down their ambition so that the party can present a united front at the convention.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had urged the governors to allow him pick a successor.

In a meeting on Tuesday with the APC national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu in attendance, Buhari said, “In keeping with the established internal policies of the party and as we approach the convention in a few days, therefore, I wish to solicit the reciprocity and support of the Governors and other stakeholders in picking my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.”

“I wish to assure you that the consultation process shall continue to ensure that all aspirants and stakeholders would be brought on board right through to the convention. This would also ensure that any anxiety occasioned by different factors are effectively brought under control and that our party emerges stronger,” Buhari said.

  • 2023: Will APC sink or swim?

With the dramatic emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer for the 2023 presidential elections, all eyes are now on the ruling party, APC, as they shop for a worthy contender on the 6th of June.

Atiku’s win did not come as a surprise to those with even a surface understanding of Nigerian politics, which evidently has a thing for regurgitating the same set of worn-out leaders. However, asides being the most influential of the lot, Atiku Abubakar, who has been a prominent player in our political clime as far back as 1996, served as Vice President for eight years under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, and has twice contested the Nigerian presidency under the same umbrella of the PDP, is also unarguably the most experienced.

Contrasting his political resume with that of his counterparts, it is safe to say that the PDP has gone with their most formidable option. Let’s not talk about his spending power.

The APC on the other hand is caught in a conundrum. Over twenty aspirants contesting the primaries of a party in apparent disarray; to some, it already feels like the ruling party is at its last gasp. To others, the emergence of Atiku in what is the PDP’s blatant disregard for zoning, is a negotiation of our national unity and should make the job easier for the APC, who only have to present a Christian Southerner and sweep Christian and Southern votes come 2023.

Is it this simple though? It should be, but “Bourdillon” is in the way.

Of APC’s twenty three presidential aspirants, there are three front-runners — the national leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. Further narrowing down, VP Osinbajo and Rotimi Amaechi fall within the Christian Southerner stratum inevitably ostracising Asiwaju, a Southern Muslim, who, given Nigeria’s current reality cannot run with another Muslim candidate. And a thorough assessment of the APC’s political makeup does not avail any strong Northern Christian running mate, Mr. Tinubu’s only logical option.

If the APC were by any chance considering the septuagenarian for the ticket, Atiku Abubakar’s weekend win has them cornered.

As it stands however, the odds seem to favour the Vice President Osinbajo, as Rotimi Amaechi has also experienced a bump in the road this past week after a Supreme Court ruling on Friday dismissed his appeal against a N96b fraud probe, ordering him to face trial.

With no moral, ethical or legal baggage in his way, his daunting credentials and having served as Vice President for seven years, there is no doubt that Osinbajo possesses the experience and political clout required to bring this home for the APC. A strong Northern Muslim as running mate, the likes of the graceful Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, or the intelligent Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, little effort is needed to take on Atiku and the PDP, whose northern votes which would have been assured, will now inescapably be shared. He also stands a very little chance with southern Nigerians, who believe that on no account should another northerner be elected after being led by one for eight full years.

For the APC, hardly any permutation works at this crucial moment but one that involves Osinbajo. There is no time for handholding and money politics, the APC can either get this right or watch from the sidelines for the next four to eight years.

  • Pius Anyim congratulates Atiku Abubakar; displeased over voting process

Former president of the senate and a contestant at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2022 Presidential Primaries, Anyim Pius Anyim, has congratulated Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for emerging the PDP flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election.

Pius Anyim made this known in a press statement, in Abuja on Sunday.

Anyim who commended the PDP 2022 Special Convention Committee for doing a great job, expressed displeasure over the voting process at the convention stating that “it was based on the old primordial sentiments”.

Appreciating those who voted for him, Anyim said, “I deeply appreciate and thank all those who stood by me throughout this race, especially those that voted for me at the primary election. I want to assure all of you that we shall continue to stand tall until we birth the Nigeria of our collective dreams.”

  • Why should Nigerians give you another opportunity? – Tinubu to Atiku

Following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 presidential election, an All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on Atiku to explain why he should be given another opportunity.

Tinubu made the statement on Sunday morning while congratulating Atiku for his victory at the keenly contested primary, praising his political experience and patriotism.

He further stated that the former vice president and his party will have to explain why Nigerians should give them “another opportunity, after squandering 16 years at the central government, without much to show”.

“Nigerians are yet to forget the national ruin and mismanagement of our country for 16 years by successive PDP administration and this bad memory will dog the campaign of the PDP Candidate,” Mr Tinubu said via the statement by the Director, Media and Communication of his campaign organisation, Bayo Onanuga.

The former Lagos governor also said he was looking forward to squaring up with Atiku “as a worthy opponent in the coming presidential election”.

Mr Tinubu is a frontline presidential aspirant on the platform of the ruling APC which will hold its primary next week.

With the PDP picking its candidate from the North which has more registered voters than the south, it remains unclear if the APC will be bold enough to nominate Mr Tinubu from the south as its flagbearer for the election.

  • UPDATED: Court clears Goodluck Jonathan to run for 2023 presidency

UPDATED: Court clears Goodluck Jonathan to run for 2023 presidency

A Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2023 presidential election.

The court also held that Jonathan has only been elected into office once in 2011.

Mr Andy Solomon and Idibiye Abraham (plaintiffs) appròached the court, seeking an order to prevent Jonathan from running for office of president by invoking the provisions of Section 137, (1b) and (3) which states that a person cannot take an oath for the office of the President more than twice whether elected or constitutionally appointed to complete the tenure of a president.

Delivering judgment in a suit marked FHC/YNG/CS/86/2022,  Justice Isa Dashen, held that the argument of the plaintiff which is hinged on the introduction of Section 137 subsection 1b and 3 into the constitution in 2018 cannot be applied retrospectively to challenge the eligiblity of Jonathan to run for president in 2023.

Justice Dashen held that before Section 137 (1b) and (3) was birthed in 2018 and there was no clear restriction on the number of times a person should run for the office of president.

He held that even in the said Section 137 (1b) and (3), the legislature did not clearly state if the law should applied in retrospect or not.

Citing the case between Cyriacus Njoku and Goodluck Jonathan, Justice Dashen said that the appeal court in 2014 ruled that Jonathan was eligible to run for the office of president and that since there has been no appeal to contest the judgement of the appellate court, from that moment Jonathan acquired the right to run for president for a second term.

“The office of president is different from that of the vice president. And that is how the election into the two offices are different.

“Jonathan was constitutionally appointed to complete the office the late president, Umaru Musa Yar’adua. And when Jonathan took the oath of office in 2010 there was no general election in Nigeria.

“The only time he took the oath of office through election was in 2011. And in 2014 Cyriacus Njoku took Jonathan to court and the appeal court found that he was eligible to contest the election.

“And after that judgment, there has been not further appeal on the matter. This simply means that if he had not lost the 2015 election, he would have taken the oath of office twice without any legal impediments.

“The section stating how many times a person can take oath of office twice took effect from 2018. And that section cannot be applied retrospectively in this case because for a law to be applied retrospectively, the legislature must state clearly the intention for the section to be applied retrospectively.

”I have taken the pain to go through the law, and there is nowhere the legislature stated clearly that this section should be applied retrospectively.

“Based on this facts, the court holds that the suit seeking to declare the first defendant , Jonathan ineligible to run for office of president for a second term, is dismissed,” he held.

  • 2023: Leave PDP now, 17 groups urge Peter Obi to contest under another party

2023: Leave PDP now, 17 groups urge Peter Obi to contest under another party

The Coalition for Peter Obi (COP) has urged the former governor of Anambra state to consider dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contest the 2023 presidential election on the platform of another political party.

The Coalition which is an amalgamation of no fewer than seventeen(17) Support groups warned Obi that he should not be part of what Nigerians want him to change.

The Coalition stated that according to reports, politicians inside the PDP who had no previous verifiable source of livelihood before joining politics were now doling out hundreds of millions of dollars to buy over the delegates that will vote at the forthcoming PDP presidential primary election.

They, therefore, called on Peter Obi to move on to another political party to be at peace with his conscience and not to entangle himself in possible political negotiations or manoeuvring that would stain him and hamper his ability to serve Nigerians.

In a statement jointly signed by the conveners of the Coalition of over 17 support groups that recently organised a One-Million-Man March, that witnessed massive turnout across the 36 states of the federation and tje FCT. It was estimated that over seven (7)million Nigerians participated in the march on Saturday, May 21, 2022, asking PDP leadership to be transparent in their dealings and to give Nigerians Peter Obi, a leader with proven track record of prudent management of resources and wealth creation.

The Coalition, with an estimated support base of about ten million active voters across the country also berated the PDP for playing double standards and violating its own constitution on zoning of elective offices, thereby toying with the future of our children.

The statement reads, “recent developments within the leadership of PDP is very pathetic as many chieftains of the party have ganged up to frustrate the presidential ambition of genuine and decent presidential aspirants, thereby encouraging unscrupulous politicians with no verifiable sources of income to throw monies around”

“They are well known individuals in the party who are doing everything possible within their powers to block any chance for credible aspirants to emerge. The Party seems to have adopted an unwritten rule of tacitly encouraging the looting of state resources for party politics.

“Many of these political merchants are envious of the nationwide acceptability and sterling performance of Peter Obi both in the public and private sector, making them do everything possible to thwart the former governor of Anambra state’s presidential ambition.

The statement signed on behalf of others by Alh Zubairu Muhammad, noted thst, “… as a Coalition which consists of more than 17 groups with ten million active voters, we call on his Excellency, Mr Peter Obi to dump Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and look for another political platform with people of like mind to pursue his presidential ambition to enable him help salvage our sinking nation. “
