2023 presidency: Group pledges N120m support for Oshiomhole

A socio-political group in Edo, Owan and Akoko-Edo Alliance, says it will mobilise N120 million in support of the presidential aspiration of former Governor of Edo, Mr Adams Oshiomhole.

Thenewsguru.com reports that Adams Oshiomhole made the reasons known after he declared his intention to contest the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The group’s decision is contained in a statement issued in Benin on Friday, by its Chairman and Secretary, Sunny Ifijen and Omeiza Ogumah respectively.

The group said it voluntarily decided to support the former governor because of his capacity and the fact that he would make a difference in the polity and governance of the country.

According to the alliance, it never supported Oshiomhole’s senatorial ambition because it wanted him to contest for a higher office such as the President.

“We have always known the capacity and ability of our comrade and hence our decision to support his ambition for higher office and not the senatorial ambition.

“Oshiomhole’s pedigree as a former labour leader, governor and former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has adequately prepared him for the task of restructuring the change.

“Indeed, the country is in dire need of a change in insecurity, social-political setting, economy and the general wellbeing of the people.

“Of course, we have other capable people aspiring for the same position but Oshiomhole’s antecedents stand him out.

“If his performance as governor of Edo doesn’t say anything about him then I wonder who else is better positioned to occupy the number one political sit in the country,” the group stated.

According to Owan and Akoko-Edo Alliance, Oshiomhole had proved in all offices he held, that the challenges in the country were surmountable.

“That is only if we have leaders that are committed, dedicated and good managers of human and material resources.

“These were the things that guided his (Oshiomhole) achievents in office as governor of Edo and also other endeavours where he excelled.

“Oshiomhole’s popularity has not waned since leaving office unceremoniously as national chairman of the APC.

“He is also a detribalised Nigerian whose friendship cut across every part of the country”, the socio-political group added.

“After one has been in office as Vice President for 7 years, I know that God did not give me that opportunity so that I would seat down somewhere and write the history of my service as Vice President.

“It is for the purpose of serving the people, and that is why I am so determined that if God gives me the opportunity to serve, the Nigerian people would realise indeed they have done the right thing by putting me in office because I would serve the country with everything, with all my heart and commitment,” Osinbajo said.

2023 Elections:Ohaneze youth wing denies Endorsing Tinubu

The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, has denied endorsing Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, (APC0 and aspirant for 2023 presidency.

OYC National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, issues a note of warning to the APC National leader not to disparage and malign the aspirations of the aspirants of Igbo extraction.

Igboayaka warned the APC presidential aspirant to keep his money because OYC would not compromise its stance on Igbo presidency.

Recall that one Miracle Nwosu said to be a member of OYC was reported to have endorsed Tinubu’s candidacy for 2023 presidency.

However, OYC distanced itself from the purported endorsement of Tinubu’s candidacy.

A statement by Igboayaka reads partly: “If Mr. Miracle Nwosu is a man, let him identify who he is, tell us where he’s living, tell us his village if he is a man. We are using this opportunity to warn any politician that wants to use Ohanaeze Youth Council’s name to cajole Ohanaeze Youth Council in the name of endorsing any political presidential aspirants in 2023 that is not from South East Zone.

“It’s better that Tinubu keeps his money because his money cannot change the minds of the Igbo youths thereby compromising this project.

“Mr. Bola Tinubu should be very careful; we are warning Ahmed Bola Tinubu and his presidential team to be very very careful in trying to do anything that will malign the interest of Southeast in the 2023 presidential project.

“The Ohanaeze Youth Council, under the leadership of Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka is 100% determined to actualize the Nigerian president of Southeast extraction by 2023. This project is timely and cannot be equated, sub-changed, or changed with anything, either it is South East presidency 2023 or Southeast ceases to be part of Nigeria.”

  • 2023 Presidency: FCT deserves a Mayor – Tambuwal

2023 Presidency: FCT deserves a Mayor – Tambuwal

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, deserves a mayor and better recognition.

Tambuwal, who is one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants, stated this while meeting with the PDP FCT delegates in Abuja.

He said that, if elected president, he would give better recognition to the FCT indigenes and their plights.

“I believe that there is a lot of work to be done in the FCT. I believe more that the people we met at the FCT deserve more recognition.

“I am not insisting that FCT should be a state but you appoint ministers, sometimes two from a state. What stop you from appointing a zonal Minister from the FCT bacause FCT is part of North Central zone?

“So if you are appointing an FCT person as Minister to represent the zone, what is wrong with that?

“Because of the Special nature of FCT, there should be a Mayor in the FCT. In major cities in the world London, California, they have mayors.

“I understand what the issues are, so what is important is for you to work with us on this campaign train. This is a project to beat in the PDP,” Tambuwal said.

The presidential aspirant also pledged that if given the mandate, youths and women would receive special attention as they were receiving in Sokoto state today.

Rep. Hassan Sokodabo (PDP-Abuja South) advised that if consensus candidate could not be achieved, the party leaders should ensure that PDP candidate emerged through credible primary.

Sokodabo said once a level playing ground was provided, it was the wished of the delegates that all aspirants would support whoever emerged.

“Whosoever emerge, we hope that others will be able to join him and build this country.”

On his part, the FCT PDP Chairman, Mr Sunday Zakka, commended the role played by Tambuwal towards PDP’s success in the FCT area councils’ election.

Zakka urged Tambuwal to continue his support for PDP FCT chapter, adding that the party will continue to appreciate him.

2023 presidency: Why I won’t resign before APC primaries – Minister

After the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) issued new guidelines for political office holders interested in contesting for an elective office to leave office 30 days before party primaries, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has insisted he won’t resign.

TheNewsGuru reports that Ngige has given reasons he won’t resign yet to contest the 2023 presidential race.

The minister who had declared to run for the presidency in 2023, disclosed that he has not received any specific instruction from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his presidential ambition.

Speaking to newsmen after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, Ngige denied knowledge of the APC directives that all appointees should resign ahead of the May 30 presidential primary.

He maintained that his decision to remain a member of the Federal Executive Council is in line with the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The Minister further stated that the March 18 judgement of the Federal High Court in Umuahia, struck out Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, adding that he is under no compulsion to resign his appointment.

When asked when he will resign in line with his party directives, he said: “Because I don’t know about that I’m hearing for the first time from you. But like I always say, I’ll be guided by the letters and spirit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said the constitution permits aspirants to resign only 30 days to the poll.

But, at the state level, more appointees have continued to tender their resignation, following their declaration of intention to run for political offices.

Section 3(i) of the APC guidelines for the nomination of candidates for the 2023 general elections says “no political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for the purpose of the nomination of candidates.

“Any political office holder interested in contesting for an elective office shall leave office 30 days, prior to the date of election or party primary for the office sought.”

Bello to pick N100m APC presidential nomination form on Wednesday

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has paid for his All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to contest the 2023 presidential election.
Mr Yemi Kolapo, Director, Media and Publicity, Yahaya Bello Presidential Campaign Organisation, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
Kolapo said the governor paid the required N100 million for the purchase of the forms early on Tuesday.
“This made him the first to officially seal his aspiration to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023,” he said.
She recalled that Nigerians from all walks of life stormed the Abuja Eagle Square on Saturday, April 2, to witness the official acceptance of Bello to vie for the 2023 presidency.
According to him, the venue of the declaration was filled to the brim with different support groups while an almost equal crowd was seen outside the venue.
Kolapo said with the payment for the forms, Bello’s teeming supporters should rest assured that he would be on the ballot paper in the 2023 presidential race.
“We are highly encouraged by the number of APC governors, leaders and stakeholders who have demonstrated their strong support for the candidacy of our principal.
“We reiterate that he is not known for betrayal. He is always very loyal to his own, and his priorities had always been Nigeria, Nigeria and Nigeria.
“Though, the race officially begins now, it is on record that Bello has consistently been at the forefront of the contest.
“He has demonstrated this again by being the first to pay for the APC expression of interest and nomination forms.
“We urge delegates and indeed all Nigerians to shun divisive narratives in the interest of the nation and choose the best of the lot,” she said.
He expressed optimism that the APC Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee (NWC) would put the interest of the party and that of Nigeria first in its activities for the emergence of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
He noted that the last few months had witnessed persistent calls by youth, women and professional groups across Nigeria on the Kogi governor to contest the 2023 presidential election.
“With Sen. Jonathan Zwingina as the Chairman of the Hope ’23 Yahaya Bello Presidential Campaign Organisation, and Hafsat Abiola-Costello as the Director-General, the tone is set for hope to be actualised for Nigerians in 2023,” Kolapo said.
  • 2023 Presidency: Saraki says it is turn of North-Central

2023 Presidency: Saraki says it is turn of North-Central

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has said that it was the turn of the North-Central geo-political zone to lead the country.

Saraki spoke on Tuesday in Jos when he addressed delegates from Plateau ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary elections slated to hold in May.

The former Kwara governor, who is among the many aspirants in the race for the PDP ticket, pointed out that the North-Central had consistently supported other regions to lead the country and deserved similar support from other zones, this time.

“You remember that before the national convention of our party, we held a meeting in Abuja with delegates of North-Central extraction.

“We said to ourselves that for many times and many years, we, in the North Central, have worked hard, we struggled, used our efforts, used our money, used our energies to support other people to lead.

“Everybody, who had become President under this great party, got the seat because of our massive sacrifices.

“We have now resolved that it is time for others to vote for us in 2023,” he said.

He stated that the North-Central had capable hands to address the myriads of problems bedeviling the country.

Saraki said that if given the opportunity, he would run an open government that would be transparent and fair to all Nigerians.

The presidential aspirant said that security and other challenges bedeviling Nigeria went out of hand because of lack accountability by the people that were responsible for tackling the issues.

“The problem of insecurity in Nigeria is because there has been no accountability.

“People have done things and nobody was held accountable for their failures.

“When I was Senate President, we sat down with security agencies and drew a roadmap on how to address the issue of insecurity, but the report was abandoned.

“If I am the President, I will hold people accountable and they will do what is right to end insecurity and there will be no injustice,” he said.

Saraki further stated that the country was so divided and needed someone that had capacity and a good grasp of the situation to restore its lost glory and unite the people.

Mr Chris Hassan, PDP Chairman in Plateau, told the delegates that Saraki stood with the state during its trying times.

Hassan said that Saraki was a stabilising factor that had traversed the length and breadth of the country to reconcile members of the PDP.

The chairman said that delegates would assess all aspirants and make an informed decision based on their antecedents.

Rep Beni Lar, daughter of Chief Solomon Lar, first PDP chairman, in her remarks, said that Nigerians were tired of bloodshed and that Saraki had the capacity to end the killings.

Lar urged the presidential aspirant to ensure that women got their 35 per cent affirmation action when elected President come in 2023.

  • 2023: Osinbajo reveals what he learnt under president Buhari

2023: Osinbajo reveals what he learnt under president Buhari

Nigeria’s current vice President Yemi Osinbajo has given details of what his principal President Muhammadu Buhari told him about the Presidency of Nigeria.

Osinbajo made this revelation on Monday during his visit to Akure the Ondo state capital to meet with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Osinbajo was full of praises for Buhari for assigning key responsibilities to him since the All Progressives Congress (APC) assumed power in 2015.

The VP further commended the President for his “open mindedness and generosity”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) recalls many things he learnt as the Acting president when the president Buhari was away on medical trips.

“Even people in government will never come across and I gained a lot of experience on that account.

“Many times, the President, when he was away, said pointedly to me that: Look, I don’t want to feter your discretion in any way.

“As Acting President, you are president. Make sure you are fair and just. Don’t refer anything to me, don’t ask me any questions. Just do whatever you need to do.”

The vice president noted that it would be an injustice for him to have learnt a lot and not put them into use.

  • PYO and 2023 Aso Rock Race B’OMO ENI BA DARA KA WI…

PYO and 2023 Aso Rock Race B’OMO ENI BA DARA KA WI…

The emergence of Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, in the orbit of 2023 Presidential Aspirants, has been like a volcanic eruption in the nation’s political landscape. It has caused upset in some camps and unsettled some other aspirants. It has changed the dynamics in the political circle, since the morning of Monday, 11 April 2022 when he publicly declared his interest in the contest for the 2023 Race to Aso Rock.

Wondering why the Vice President (PYO) has been the issue in the last couple of weeks? Simply; he stands out of the pack, like a rose among green vegetables. Although of moderate stature, in physique, he is a giant in intellect, comportment, carriage, disposition, exposure and integrity. Above all, remarkably, he is the current Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – a position he has creditably held for almost seven years, without rancour, with absolute loyalty to his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, in the service of the nation and the people of Nigeria.
Unlike what obtained between Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, when he was Vice President, and his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, during the years of their second term in office, PYO still enjoy the confidence of PMB, his boss, to date.

Expectedly, the well crafted 29-paragraph Declaration of Interest Speech of PYO, which also contained highlight of what could pass as a paraphrase of his Manifesto, has been a talking-point, attracting variegated reactions, criticism of different shades and colour. Detractors, supporters and sympathisers of other aspirants, have variously been picking holes in his submissions in the speech.
Some are piqued by his description of President Muhammadu Buhari as “a true Nigerian patriot, a servant of the nation in war and peace, and a man of integrity,” whom he had worked with in the last seven years.
Some have wondered what the Buhari administration has put on ground that he (PYO) intends to build on, as stated in his declaration: ” If by the grace of God, and the will of the people, I am given the opportunity, then I believe that first, we must complete what we have started.”

What one finds most intriguing, is the blind condemnation of the seeming or perceived placid disposition of PYO to the policies of government, of which he is a part, and the attendant socio-political problems believably impacting negatively on the people.

A cool, calm, calculating, reasonable, level-headed, vibrant legal mind that PYO is, with benefit of history and native intelligence, could not have done otherwise. He has a guide, among other factors, the declaratory pronouncement of the Supreme Court in the case: A.G. Federation v.Abubakar (2007) 10 NWLR (Pt.1041)1, that THE VICE PRESIDENT, AS A MEMBER OF THE PRESIDENT’S TEAM CAN NOT CRITICIZE THE POLICIES AND ACTIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT OPENLY.

Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, OFR, CON, handled the brief on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation. The legal luminary recounted the Supreme Court judgement in his autobiography: Impossibility Made Possible. An excerpt from the book reads:

“It is not intended to suggest that the union (between the President and Vice President) demands of the Vice that he should be a slave to the President, with no will or opinion of his own, it does not submerge his personality or individuality in that of the President or make them two-in-one…
“As the President’s Chief Adviser, it is his prerogative and duty to discuss freely with him the policies and actions of the government, to point out any defects or errors in them, and the dangers to which they may expose the government. Nevertheless, having done this, the principle of collective responsibility binds him to all government decisions and actions, whether they emanated from the President alone or from the Executive Council.
“So long as he remains in office as Vice President, he is not free to oppose in public, decisions or actions of the President or the Executive Council, no matter that he personally disagrees with them. His freedom to disagree and to criticize can only be exercised privately in a meeting with the President alone or in the Executive Council.
“Freedom on the part of a Vice President to criticize his President publicly for mismanagement or corruption is certainly not consistent with the loyalty required of him as a member of the President’s team.”

The import of Yoruba aphorism: “A F’ogbon Ologbon S’ogbon L’ogbon… Eni T’ojin Si K’oto, Ko Awon T’oku L’ogbon” – Wiser is he, who learn from the causation of the pitfall of others, than he who fell victim before learning his lesson – was not lost on calm, cool-headed PYO, guided by the ethos of OMOLUWABI – One well brought up.

In the first three years (1999-2002) of his administration, President Olusegun Obasanjo had huge confidence in his No 2, Alhaji Atiku Abubarka, and gave so much responsibilities to him. Things were smooth-saling between the two, until a subterranean campaign of Mandela Option of One-Term for OBJ, perceivably fuelled by the Vice President oozed out, in the approach of the National Convention of the ruling party. It took a lot of horse-trading, persuasion and pacification to get Alhaji Atiku Abubarka to douse the tension for President Obasanjo to secure the ticket for second-term mandate in Aso Rock in 2003. Thereafter, it was however a cautious, consciously tactically moderated relationship with the Vice President. Atiku was choked up and effectively shrinked, cut to size, with insignificant responsibility assigned to him.

Choked up, uncomfortable Vice President, now like fish out of water, in search of fresh air and avenue to actualize his presidential ambition, defected to the Action Congress for a Presidential Ticket in 2007 Election, while still in office as Vice President. The development led to a chain of actions that progressively culminated in the Supreme Court judgement recounted earlier.

Had Atiku not be driven by inordinate ambition, had he allowed the harmonious relationship that existed between him and his boss in the early years of the administration to flourish, he would have had an automatic ticket to succeed President Obasanjo in 2007. His boss would have felt comfortable enough to hand over power to him, ensured smooth transition, seamless continuity and sustained stability.
Vice President Atiku Abubarka, lost the golden chance to impatience and vaulting ambition. He has since been desperately and vehemently pursuing the golden presidential diadem, jumping from one political party to the other. He now has the label of Serial Presidential Candidate/Aspirant. He is also currently in the race for the 2023 ticket.

The scenario reminded one of the moonlight tale of the gorilla that was to transform to a human being. The Oracle asked the gorilla to exercise patience for seven days for the process to have features of human being to mature. On the sixth day, the restless, impatient, over ambitious gorrila headed for the market place singing: Iwoyi Ola Ma D’eniyan…(By this time tomorrow, I shall have features of a human being). A misadventure. The glorious day never came. The rest is history.

The enstranged relationship, that prevented a smooth President Obasanjo to Vice President Atiku power flow in 2007, changed the trajectory of the country’s polity and politics. The resultant gravitations brought us to this pass. The narrative would have been different from what had obtained since 2007, if the Vice President had kept his cool. We definitely would not have been where we are today. The story would have been different.

In 2002 a Vice President Atiku Abubarka chose to rock the boat with his boss. 20 years after – 2022 – there is a cool-headed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, keeping the boat steady and afloat with his boss to maintain the stability of the polity.

Nigeria and Nigerians are on the march again, for the race for a Mr. President. Sadly, of concern, it seems to have become a race for all-comers of all sorts. But, in the midst of the mix, there is a man on the block who stands shoulders high.

For seven unbroken years, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has been the Vice President, learning the ropes. He has painstakingly watched from inside and from the sidelines, workings and proceedings in the highest echelon of power in the land. He knows which Ts to cross, the loopholes to block, the rough edges to smoothen, the policies to finetune, the ones to consolidate. He would not have to beat about the bush. No trial and error.
In a Yoruba adage: Okunkun Ile Eni Kii Soro Fun Ni Lati Rin. Literally: It is never difficult for one to navigate through the dark in one’s home. The geography of the setting of the home is already engraved in the mind and head.

PYO will hit the ground running, if, by the grace of God, and the will of the people, he is given the opportunity to be in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in 2023. None, among the multitude and myriad of aspirants, parades a match for his credentials.

I agree in-to-to with his submission in his declaration speech that: “I believe that the very reason why the Almighty God gave me these experiences, these insights, and these opportunities, is that they must be put to the use of our country and its great peoples.”

My fear. The bane, over the years is that politics and elections in Nigeria have never thrown up the best, especially, for the Office of President. It is even on record, a General Olusegun Obasanjo, as military Head of State, on the eve of the 1979 Presidential Election, reportedly said, the best candidate may not necessarily win an election.
We need to put an end to this viscious cycle, for the good of all.

B’OMO ENI BA DARA KA WI… If one’s child is beautiful, there is no harm acknowledging and trumpeting the divine blessing and favour.
This PYO, is good. He has all it takes to turn things around for the good of all.
