2023: Saraki drops critical message for APC, others ‘disturbing’ Jonathan to defect from PDP

Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a core Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member and will not fall into the trap of the defection thrown at him by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties for 2023 presidential race.

Saraki stated this on Tuesday shortly after he led members of the PDP reconciliation committee on a visit to the Abuja residence of the former president.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the meeting with Jonathan is coming amid growing reports that the ex-president was formalising plans to join the ruling APC for a possible presidential ticket in 2023.

However both Jonathan and the APC have denied the reports.

But speaking with journalists after the meeting, Saraki said those “disturbing” the former president into quitting the PDP should perish the thought as Jonathan remained a PDP man to the core.

According to him, Jonathan was unwavering in his commitment to see the PDP bounce back to national reckoning, assuring that the former president would avail the PDP his experience, time and resources to return it to power, particularly at the centre.

Saraki said: “We are members of the national reconciliation and strategy committee set up by the party and part of our task is to meet with our former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

“We are starting off with our former President and we are here to let him know what our plans are and also to hear his own views and advice on what we need to do and how to do it as well as how we need to strengthen the party and reconcile aggrieved members in order to bring about unity and focus in our party.

“He is also ready to work with the reconciliation committee to play his own role. That is a great step for the party. We have put that behind us.

“All those people of the other party that would like to come and disturb our leaders. Our leaders are here and they are ready to work for the party.”

The former Senate President expressed delight that the meeting with Jonathan, which lasted for about 90 minutes, was “very productive”.

“It was a very useful meeting. He gave us his views and we are very happy. He reassured all of us of his commitment to the PDP and he told us that he is still ready to offer his time, experience and resources to strengthen the party and that is very strong and important for us. Of course, you know there are funny issues going on but we are leaving this place very happy”, Saraki added.

Saraki was, however, evasive when asked if the meeting discussed the possibility of Jonathan vying for the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP, saying that the former president’s resolve to work in the interest of the opposition party were commendable.

“We spoke about what role former Presidents like him will play and he left us feeling very happy that yes, he will like to play that role in the PDP and helping our committee to move forward,” Saraki said.

Other members of the PDP reconciliation committee that accompanied Saraki to the meeting included former governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Ibrahim Shema (Katsina); and Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe).

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim and a former House of Reps Leader, Mulikat Adeola-Akande also attended the meeting.

  • APC breaks silence on ‘romance’ with ex-president Jonathan, 2023 presidency

APC breaks silence on ‘romance’ with ex-president Jonathan, 2023 presidency

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied speculations making the rounds that it is romancing former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the 2023 presidency on its platform.

The speculations has it that the immediate past president, a staunch member of main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being courted by some interests in the ruling party to run for the presidency again.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that a PDP lawmaker and caucus leader in the House of Representatives, Rep Kingsley Chinda on Tuesday described the alleged plot by the APC to field Jonathan in the 2023 presidential election as a dummy designed to disorganize the PDP.

According to Chinda, in an opinion, he espoused that they only want to lure Jonathan out of the PDP along with some Governors and ex-Ministers to populate the APC to later tell him that he is not qualified, then it would be too late for them to go back to PDP.

However, the speculation of Jonathan’s romance with the ruling party further gained some credibility with visits of some leaders of APC to the former President in his Abuja home during his last birthday celebration.

In addition, the former President has also been having a smooth relationship with his successor who had nominated him as envoy of ECOWAS to mediate in political conflicts in Mali and lately, Gambia.

Buhari has also continue to shower praises on his predecessor over how he accepted defeat and called to congratulate him on his victory even before the result of the 2015 general election was fully announced.

Recall that the ruling APC and its then presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari defeated then incumbent Jonathan in 2015.

However, some analysts have said the former president may no longer qualify to run for the presidency again having also completed the tenure of late President Umaru Yar’Adua before he was elected for his own full term of office in 2011 going by recent amendment to the Nigerian constitution.

Some reports last week had again indicated that some APC governors in the Northern part of the country are already working to ensure that Jonathan gets the APC 2023 presidential ticket.

“Those peddling such information, they are afraid. But for now, there is nothing in the APC which has anything to do with the aspiration for 2023,” Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni who is interim committee chair of the APC said while denying the rumours.

He spoke to BBC Hausa service.

“Even if someone wants to base assumption on our recent visit to him during his birthday, we were there because of his capacity as a former President of Nigeria. Again, even if there is nothing, when we are talking of peaceful coexistence, we must give credit to former President Jonathan on the issue of peace. How he accepted defeat in 2015 and resigned to fate. That has qualified him to be a statesman and he is now among our fathers,” the Governor was further quoted as telling the BBC in transcription of the interview to English.

Buni added that the visit of APC governors to Jonathan during his birthday was because of his status as a former president and therefore should not be interpreted to have political undertone: “There are numerous of such visits to leaders of PDP, APC, why are others not being mentioned, but Jonathan?”

He also pointed out that President Buhari had indicated during the revalidation of his party membership in Daura last Saturday that it is party members from the grassroots level that will now select candidates of the party.

“Then, who are we to say we are considering Jonathan? How? It has to be a party affair and once it is a party affair, then we are talking about the people. So we have nothing like that in our agenda. What we have now, and is of importance to us, is to ensure peace amongst party members.

“Also, to bring members of other political parties, whichever party it might be, whoever wants, should come in to the APC. This is our plan for now. We are yet to start talking about aspirants, we are not in any discussion about aspirants,” he said.

  • Ohuabunwa welcome to the 2023 presidential campaign – Dele Sobowale

Ohuabunwa welcome to the 2023 presidential campaign – Dele Sobowale

“We are not coming with anger and recrimination, but with equity, we need to come out and make Nigeria work.” Mazi Ohuabumwa, Presidential Candidate, New Nigeria Group, NNG, January 20,2021.

I am totally delighted that, early in 2021, an Igbo candidate has defied those counselling that it is too early to start talking about 2023 elections. I am strongly convinced that it is not only appropriate, it might even be too late to start the campaign for President, Governor, Senate etc in 2023. American President, Clinton, started his campaign for US Presidency the day the result of the Presidential election was announced – which George Bush Senior won. So, with all due respects to the elder statesmen urging people to wait, I think this is the time to start.

My joy is doubled because the first serious candidate to toss his hat into the ring is from the South East. Again, I believe in the old saying that “heaven helps those who help themselves.” To that must be added the advice provided by the title of Professor Wole Soyinka’s book – “You must set out at dawn.” Mazi has set out early, I wish him all the best – because I have known him for a long time as a worthy Nigerian to lead the nation. Let me provide a brief introduction from my own perspective.

Furthermore, I know you more than most other potential candidates and more than most Nigerians. Even though we met last about ten years ago, let me use this first opportunity of commenting about your new role as a Presidential candidate to reveal a side of you few people know. Even those who will not eventually vote for you, if fair-minded, will agree that you deserve the chance.

Although not a pharmacist, I was in the pharmaceutical sector as Marketing Manager, National Sales Manager/Director and Field Sales Manager for three multi-nationals – Abbott Laboratories, Boots Nigeria Ltd and Smith Kline and French (now part of GlaxoSmithKline) from 1974 to 1981 before going off to North Brewery Limited, Kano as Marketing Manager. You were with Pfizer during those nearly seven years in the pharmaceutical sector; but, because our products were not in direct competition, we never had to go head to head in the market. But, then as now, the sector was a small club of people engaged in friendly rivalry. The top managers knew who was where and the progress they were making. Thus, in 1977, when you first became the first Nigerian Managing Director of, not only Pfizer but any multinational drug firm,, nobody doubted it was honour well-deserved. I certainly did not. After all, Pfizer and Boots were next door neighbours at Oregun. We frequently peeped over the fence to know what was going on!!

Your next step was the most breath-taking. As MD of Pfizer, you organised a Management-Buy-Out, MBO, then a term unheard off in Nigeria, to send Pfizer packing from Nigeria and installed, in 1997, in its place Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc. Although no longer in the sector, I was already in the media writing two columns – Sunday and Monday. Monday was Business and Economics day; and I recollect interviewing a few people – my old customers still in business – about the prospects of Neimeth. Nobody gave the company a chance. One distributor at Head Bridge Market, Onitsha, said “In six months he will be writing applications for job as salesman.” Nobody gave you a chance. It is a testimony to your tenacity, determination and outstanding leadership qualities that Neimeth exists till today. Nigeria needs that sort of person at Aso Rock.

However, I hope what follows will not offend you. But, you need supporters who will tell you the truth. At any rate, this is my first article on your bid for president. God willing, we will meet to talk privately. So, here are two quick points to bear in mind. One, Nigerians don’t vote for the best candidate. The man who pronounced Awolowo “the best President we never had” voted Shagari in 1983 and was glad he did. So, don’t expect that “goodness” alone will get you there. You need more. Two, I should have offered to join your campaign immediately. But, I am on record for supporting Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. My hands are tied until she categorically drops out of the race.

Finally, at least for now, let me disclose to you that you have a competitive advantage over all contestants – including money bags – which can work in your favour and which we can discuss within the context of Igbo Presidency 2023..

LETTER TO PROF OBIOZOR – 2

Two days after I had sent part one of the LETTER TO PROF, my old friend Sam Ohuabunwa tossed his hat into the presidential contest ring. His announcement was divinely timed because it fits right into the text of the second part; that is “where are the Igbo candidates?” Now we have one. Sam is at least a perfect gentleman – if ever there is one. I will sleep better with him in Aso Rock than most of the Igbo former Governors and Ministers.

    THE SEARCH FOR CREDIBLE CANDIDATES

“Where is the Igbo candidate?” That is the question I am confronted with all the time. My reply is always the same. “Let us start first with the national consensus to give Igbo people a fair deal in Nigerian politics; then all of us can search for the person to lead us.”

However, in order not to give the impression that I don’t have a clue, a few names have been proposed in the last year. I will repeat their names and add two more. But, before listing the names, permit me to explain how someone, in my opinion, becomes eligible to be a Nigerian President. Back in 1968/70, like most MBA students in Boston, Frederick Drucker, the management guru and prolific writer, was our idol. Drucker, it was who had made a point in one of his books about calling somebody a “good worker”. He had asked: “good for what?” Then, he had followed that question by saying that a man/woman is only good if he can solve any of the problems he confronts in office. Consequently, when in search of a President, we must first of all define the most important problems we want managed and then determine which candidates can help us most. That we like the man or woman should not be our primary reason if we love Nigeria.

That said, I strongly believe that in 2023 this country will face two primary problems – a heavily debt-burdened economy, more serious food scarcity and heightened insecurity. The three, incidentally are closely-linked. Joblessness, corruption, decayed infrastructure, declining health and education are also major contenders. So is having a leader who has served all Nigerians in need without discrimination. High level experience and demonstrated capacity for problem-solving are also important.

These were the considerations which led to my belief that the following Nigerians will make good Presidents: Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Mr Tony Elumelu, Mr Onyema of Air Peace, Dr Ogbonaya Onu, Pat Utomi, Moghalu and Mr Peter Obi. Certainly other contenders will emerge as soon as possible and I think one of top priorities of your Presidency of Ohaneze is not only to help identify potentially acceptable candidates; but to encourage them to come out now. Contrary to opinion offered by a Yoruba politician, and someone I respect a great deal, it is not too soon to start. On the contrary, for Igbo candidates, I think it is a bit late – given the size of Nigeria and the difficulties ahead.

Prof, you should also advise each candidate to assemble a national campaign team – not just Igbo followers. They cannot go round paying mandatory courtesy calls on first class traditional rulers with only Igbos in their delegation. In that respect Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory are key hunting grounds for campaign workers for two reasons. One, Lagos has the largest votes and all the ethnic groups are here. Abuja is next to Lagos in terms of ethnic groups’ representation. The two together dominate the national media almost totally. They must all establish their campaign offices there in addition to others.

You might not realise it, Prof, but I can help the candidates with Lagos.

    COLLABORATIVE COMPETITION

The most important thing is for each candidate to cultivate his/her own supporters nationwide; get them committed to the Igbo President 2023 Agenda and hold them irrespective of who emerges as candidate. Sam would understand what I am talking about. In Marketing, it is called “Collaborative Competition”. Under this sort of rivalry, the contestants unanimously agree on one objective – Igbo Presidency – and each would mobilise support for that objective first and foremost and works for it as if he is already the chosen one. Who emerges as candidate becomes secondary. Furthermore, this approach to rivalry will minimise the negative campaign which characterises all contests for office in Igboland. Everybody will be enjoined not to break ranks and work against the Igbo Agenda if they fail to clinch the ticket. The interest of the people must be paramount. Let God decide who will emerge.

Prof, as Sir Winston Churchill, 1874-1965, said, “This is not the end [of conversation with you]. It is not even the beginning of the end. But, it is perhaps the end of the beginning.” As they say in Warri, “Body go jam.”

    TRUMP DISAPPOINTED ME ONCE AGAIN

    “The brave die once…”

Let me confess that I was wrong on Donald Trump when in December the idea occurred to me that he might commit suicide instead of allowing himself to be disgraced out of the White House.

In the December article, I had made the following predictions. First, Trump would lose all the cases filed on his behalf to over-turn the US Presidential Elections. Second, he still would not and never accept the fact that he lost. He hates losers; and now he is a global loser. Third, he would try to create sufficient civil unrest as to justify his declaration of Emergency or Martial rule. Fourth, he will not attend Biden’s inauguration ; because that will amount to admitting that he lost. That is something his deranged mind will never accept. Finally, faced with a shameful exit from office, he might kill himself.

He did everything else – except have the guts to commit suicide. He prefers to die in instalments. A shameless draft-dodger, he was always a coward. He has demonstrated it once again.

  • Yahaya Bello has agreed to contest for president in 2023 – Kogi Speaker

Yahaya Bello has agreed to contest for president in 2023 – Kogi Speaker

The Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Prince Mathew Kolewole, is canvassing for the support of legislators across the country for Gov. Yahaya Bello’s ambition to become the President of Nigeria in 2023.

Kolawole stated this in Jos during a visit to the Speaker of the Plateau House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba and his colleagues to solicit for their support for Bello’s ambition.
He was accompanied on the visit by his Deputy, Ahmed Mohammed, and other Kogi lawmakers.
“Our mission in Plateau is to congratulate the Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba on his election as the Chairman of North-Central zone of Speakers Conference of Nigeria.
“We are also here to brief him and canvass support for his Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State, who is the youngest governor in Nigeria to run for president come 2023.
“In view of our relationship with our governor, as legislators, we have articulated all his achievements in the areas of security, women empowerment, youth inclusion in government, education and infrastructure development.
“We have found him to be suitable as he has performed creditably well.
“On this note, we decided on our own, to pass a vote of confidence on him and at the same time, pass a resolution that we want him to contest for the position of the President of Nigeria.
“The youths of Nigeria are also putting pressure on him to contest for the position of the President of Nigeria and he has finally agreed,” he said.
According to him, they brought the message to Plateau Assembly being one of that states that is controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The speaker said that they believed in the association of legislators in Nigeria which had about 998 members with over 600 of them being members of APC and automatic delegates of the party.
In his remarks, Ayuba said that the Plateau lawmakers would support Bello if he set an example by granting Kogi State House of Assembly autonomy.
He said that autonomy was one of the key things that the Speakers Conference of Nigeria had been fighting for its implementation.
“As a young person, he should act differently and implement the autonomy so that others will follow.
“Sincerely, the north-central should be included in the calculations of this country as it is most times left out.
“We will tell them that we form one of the largest populations in the country and we should be considered this time,” he said.
He assured the Kogi speaker that he would convey his message to the state lawmakers when they resumed from recess on Jan. 20.
Ayuba further stated that Plateau would join hands with Kogi to get what rightly belonged to the north-central.
  • Wike tackles Secondus led NWC, says PDP not ready to win 2023 presidency

Wike tackles Secondus led NWC, says PDP not ready to win 2023 presidency

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused the Uche Secondus’ National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sowing seed of discord among PDP governors and jeopardising the party’s prospect to clinch the presidency in 2023.

He also warned that President Muhammadu Buhari’s integrity would be at stake if he failed to honour invitation of the House of Representatives to address the growing concern about the spate of insecurity across the country.

Wike, while speaking on a live television programme in Port Harcourt on Friday, said it was regrettable that instead of capitalising on the inefficiency and maladministration that has characterised the All Progressives Congress, APC’s five years in power, PDP’s NWC is deepening cracks in the party.

“PDP ought to have harvested from the inefficiency of the APC; from the maladministration of the APC. Ordinarily, that is what opposition party ought to do. If you ask me, are Nigerians waiting for a change? Yes. If you ask me as a member of PDP, am ready to support PDP to takeover, yes. But, if you ask me currently as it is, is the leadership of the party willing for us to harvest this opportunity for a change, I will say no.”

He explained that rather than focus on strategies on how to take advantage of the growing disenchantment with the APC government, the NWC is sowing seed of discord among governors using two former governors of Imo and Cross River States and present Senator from Benue State.

“An opposition party that ought to be united, to work, to take over the affairs of government, because people are waiting for this opportunity, but the current leadership of NWC is not prepared for that, rather, what they have done is to constitute some people to sow a seed of discord among governors for their own selfish interest. And that will boomerang; that will consume them.”

The governor said because he lacked the ability to defect to the APC or another political party, he would continue to do what he could to ensure the survival of the PDP.

“I will not allow anybody to kill PDP. They have capacity to move to APC. I don’t and I cannot move to APC. So, anybody that tries to do something to destroy PDP, I will not allow you. Anybody that I see that has the trait to destroy the PDP, I will not allow it,” he said.

He described as disingenuous the decision of the NWC to jettison the recommendations of Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom led committee set up to reconcile the party in Niger and Plateau States, just because of its vested interest in Niger State.

The governor accused the current leadership of NWC of merely being interested in retaining current structure of the party to remain in power, and not to win the 2023 election.

“The present National Working Committee is not interested or doing anything to take over the realms of government in 2023. When your interest is to remain in power, you are no longer interested to win election.”

Wike also said the level of insecurity leading to deaths, particularly in Borno State and other parts of the country ought to have compelled Buhari to keep his promise of honouring the invitation by the House of Representatives.
He pointed out that it was APC members who control majority in the National Assembly that moved the motion to invite President to address them on what measures are being taken to tackle and end the spate of violent killings, to which he consented.

The governor said it was wrong for the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to turn around to subject the invitation to legal interpretation, instead of protecting the integrity of the President which is now at stake.

“There is insecurity. People are dying. You don’t go by legal approach to solve that problem. If Mr President had given the assurance, saying my integrity is at stake, therefore I will go, that decision was not taken without talking first to his inner cabinet.

“It’s not a question and answer session. You go with a brief to address the congress. To say, see where it was when we came, see where we are today. Yes, we have not achieved what we thought, but what we require from everyone is cooperation.

“For me, I think this is not the period to be legalistic. This is the period every Nigerian should be concerned about what is happening. Just this morning (Friday), I heard that 16 people were killed on Abuja-Kaduna road yesterday. Look at the loss of life in Borno State. Senate has said look, Mr President, relief all Service Chiefs, which means they are concerned about the security situation in the country,” he said.

He further stated that if he were the Attorney General of the federation, he would have advised the President privately and urge him to write a letter to the House of Representatives that he would come at a later day because of the exigency of his office.

To end the spate of violent crime in the country, Wike recommended the creation of employment opportunities for youths and drastic change to operational system of policing in the country.

He insisted that States must be allowed to be involved in the Community police, which has already been hijacked by APC members.

2023 presidency: Rep urges South-East politicians to join APC

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Kingsley Uju-Chima (APC-Imo), has urged politicians of South East extraction to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to enhance their reckoning in zoning the 2023 presidency to the region.

Uju-Chima, who made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, said that by joining the ruling party, it would guarantee a place for the Igbo people in national power sharing.

The lawmaker, who represents Ohaji/ Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency, commended Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi for taking the bold step by joining the APC.

According to him, playing national politics is the way to go for the South East region to secure the seat of the president in 2023.

“I was elected on the platform of the Action Alliance (AA) but I defected to the ruling party because I realised that it is the best way to go in achieving all that I desire for my people from the centre.

“We have Senators from the South East extraction in APC and about six House of Representatives members.

“I am happy that the Igbo people are beginning to realise that being strong players at the centre matters a lot in terms of power sharing and amenities.

“The best way forward for South East presidency in 2023 is through the ruling party, APC, hence my appeal,” he said.

According to him, the APC is repositioning to make sure that 2023 is all encompassing in terms of power sharing for all regions.

The legislator said that the South East should take advantage of the development in the party and join the power play at the centre considering zoning.

The Lawmaker, however, decried the inadequate provision of essential amenities including roads, hospitals and employment for his constituents.

He appealed to the Federal Government and all stakeholders to ensure that the Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Constituency was taken into considerations in development as oil producing communities.

“My constituency is one of the largest crude oil producing communities in Nigeria and there is currently a refinery project by Waltersmith that is ongoing in the area.

“The youth of these communities are not happy and feel marginalised.

“The Federal Government should speed up efforts to provide amenities to these communities and ensure jobs for its teeming youth,” he added.

  • Fayemi opens up on 2023 presidency, relationship with Buhari

Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti state and Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, said his actions as a peacemaker and conciliator are not geared towards taking over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

He described as untrue, reports that he is working clandestinely towards building structures to prosecute his “rumored presidential ambition in 2023”.

Speaking through Segun Dipe, his senior special assistant on public communications, Fayemi said he is not in the league of those working towards the next presidential election.

“Fayemi is a sitting governor and he chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. He enjoys these roles and he is playing them to the best of his ability,” the statement read.

“His objective is that of engaging in processes such as negotiation, mediation, conciliation, and arbitration in order to move a seemingly violent conflict into non-violent dialogue, where differences are settled through conflict transformation processes or through the work of representative political institutions.

“He is interested in what is happening in every part of the country and, like he himself once stated, anything that affects the peace of any state governed by a member of the NGF would surely affect the solidarity of the forum.

“People like Fayemi bring people together. You find them in all kinds of places and in all kinds of circumstances. They are very lovable people who wish the very best for other people. Despite that his action as a peacemaker and conciliator means a lot to other people, the governor is a modest person and he is focused on other people’s happiness.

“As a bridge builder, Fayemi is never pushy; he just wants everyone around him to find peace and achieve happiness. The governor no doubt knows a lot of people and doesn’t fail to bring everybody together; he listens carefully and is sincerely interested in how everyone is doing.

“Like any other bridge-builder in the world, Fayemi likes to help to connect people, he is quick at recognising what someone else needs and his mind starts searching for ways to help the other person move ahead.”

  • Decide what you want, Biafra or 2023 Presidency, ACF tells Igbos

Decide what you want, Biafra or 2023 Presidency, ACF tells Igbos

Nigeria’s Igbo ethnic group in the five states constituting the South East zone, has been asked to make a choice between having Biafra Republic or Nigerian presidency in 2023.

In a trending commentary, Anthony Sani, secretary-general of the influential Northern Nigeria Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) asked the Igbo to make the choice, saying the rest of Nigerians would be too scared to entrust the Igbo with the presidency in 2023 if “they are seen to also be agitating for secession from the federation”

Sani was reacting to a debate stirred by an interview granted by Malam Isa Funtua, a member of the Buhari inner circle to Arise TV. Funtua advised the Igbo to stop politics of exclusion and reach out to other ethnic blocs.

“If the Igbo want to be President, then they must belong. If you don’t belong, then you can’t be the President,” Funtua said.

Weighing in on the controversy, Sani described the Igbo as suffering from “superiority and inferiority complexes” simultaneously, accusing them of playing both victim and also having a sense of entitlement.

    Read Sani’s intervention:

“When I read a letter by one Frederick Nwabufo on page 18 of The Nation newspaper under the caption “Isa Funtua, Igbo and 2023 presidency” in which the author berated Isa Funtua of being an arrogant man who suffers from a sense of entitlement, I wonder the wisdom,” Sani said.

“As far as I am concerned, it is Igbo who is obsessed with a sense of entitlement by their insistence that it is their turn to produce the president in a country which boasts of over 250 ethnic nationalities. Igbos suffer from both superiority and inferiority complexes.

“At one point, they tout their superiority by claiming to be over and above any other nationality in Nigeria because they are better at the use of their superior commercial acumen for trade.

“At another, they play the victim by crying of marginalization the most. Power in a multi-party democracy is never secured through threats and intimidation, nor is it obtained by jeremiads out of pity.

“This is because democracy is a contest of ideas and reason and is never a bullfight.

“Igbos cannot agitate for separation and hanker for president by still expecting the country would not be scared of voting them for the presidency.

“Igbos may wish to recall that Senator McCain lost the elections because he had [Mrs Palin] who was governor of the state of Alaska. This was also because her husband was accused of attending a meeting of separatists who wish the state of Alaska to leave [the] USA and join Russia.

“I do not see how somebody from Scotland, Catalan, Quebec, Aceh or Xinjiang could dream of being voted president of their countries. Reason: Such a person would most likely play Gorbachev.

“So when Isa Funtua says Igbo should belong, he meant “belong to where the majority [is]”. That is to say, Igbo must develop their winning game plan by reaching out to build bridges and break barriers.

“The North does not comprise the caliphate alone but is very diverse. In fact, the caliphate today is not ruled by the ruling party.”

Where it a war, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State would long have been history, but would most certainly be remembered for his great exploits in the several battles he would have gallantly led his men in. Unfortunately in politics, not just Nigerian politics where El- Rufai by “accident” has found himself a major player, he has been murdered, assassinated and summarily executed several times over, but he lives to be killed again and again. Though El-Rufai lives, the worse is definitely is yet to come considering that supporters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu have erroneously concluded that he is the “stumbling” block to the presidential ambitions of their godfather.

To the average supporter of Bola Tinubu , El-Rufai is “supposedly” opposed to zoning of the presidency to the South-West,solely because of him and they are ready to bet their life on what is a “conspired falsehood”, pushed by forces that think El-Rufai can be intimidated into silence. Never mind that of late, in what clearly is an after thought “sophisticated political strategy” , the narrative has shifted from what truly speaking is a South-West project – a Bola Tinubu presidential ambition- to being described as an entire South project, following the dawning reality that it lacks the muscle to go it alone. But the strategy that can’t fly,as Tinubu has committed so many political sins that would be difficult to explain away. The problem when a man has been around for so long and has been behaving like the Lord of the Mano- there will always be many toes that he would have trampled upon.

In the coming days, weeks and months as Nigeria delicately heads towards 2023, there would be an intensification of the “Demonize El -Rufai” project. By 2021 going by the work plan of his political “opposites” ,the demonization and demoralization phase should have been completed and El-Rufai mortally wounded, that he wouldn’t be in any position to run, that’s in the event that he had the intention to. What makes the intensification of the concerted attack funny, is that it’s in spite of El-Rufai’s vehement denial , that he harbours no presidential ambitions, and that he is very contented with his present assignment as governor of the third biggest state, which he is also combining with a doctorate degree programmme.

There is absolutely no doubt that Nasir El-Rufai’s political “problems” are politically engineered by some powerful forces and they have to do with his rather blunt position on issues of National development and integration, borne out of deep nationalism that can’t ever be questioned. Unfortunately some of those opposed to El-Rufai predictably resort to a campaign of vilification, rather than challenge him with facts. The tragedy is that due to lack of political knowledge, in spite of supposedly “rising level” of education and increased availability of information, the public lacks the capacity to properly evaluate “misinformation” spurn almost on daily basis about El-Rufai by mischief makers who perceive him as a deadly threat to be crushed and so twist his statements as they assiduously work to annihilate him politically. The ways of politicians are confounding, because having consistently tried in the last few years to politically destroy him and failed, common sense dictates that they give up.

Following the public presentation by Comrade Salihu Mohammed Lukman, the Director- General of the All Progressives Congress(APC) Governors Forum of his book “Power of Possibility and Politics of Change in Nigeria”, an insider account of how some legacy parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria(ANC),a faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA), the All Nigeria Peoples Party(ANPP) and the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC) against all odds merged into the APC and defeated what El- Rufai describes as a “determined incumbent” – President Goodluck Jonathan, there has been a mass hysteria that a visitor would think Nigeria is in a state of war.

It’s a credit to the power of El-Rufai’s thoughts and convictions that his contribution Prologue 11 “Defeating A Determined Incumbent -The Nigerian Experience” – to the seminal work that contains many other critical issues like Party Funding and Scope for Internal Democracy, The Nigerian Public Service: A Paradoxical Reality, The Challenges of Ethno-Religious Divide and APC Initiatives and APC Roadmap and The Future of Democracy in Nigeria “, that it’s his contribution that has provoked wide discourse, even though more for what it didn’t contain, than what it actually contains – a confirmation of the deep political ignorance and that information most often is evaluated with bias.

Femi Makinde of The Punch newspaper who definitely hasn’t read the book, but who nevertheless out of “Rational Ignorance” devoted an entire page in the 17th August,2019 edition to “inform” the world that “El-Rufai’s savaged call for zoning triggers break-up fears.” The determination of Makinde to crucify El-Rufai is beyond any iota of doubt, especially the great length he went to make his tale by moonlight believable by alluding to the image of El-Rufai as that of a controversial figure,a tag that some section of the media and vested interests have tried and failed to weave around him.Makinde’s tale is built on a foundation of falsehood that “the governor is not new to controversy” and building on this fallacy embarked upon the demolition of El- Rufai, towards a determined end.

There is no doubt that the issue of zoning of political offices especially the presidency, is emotional and would any day, and any time generate heated debate. But the debate about zoning can be provoked by the media without attributing to Nasir Ahmad El- Rufai what he didn’t canvass in his contribution to the “Power of Possibility and Politics of Change in Nigeria.” Makinde outrightly lied and peddled falsehood against the person of El-Rufai,when he asserted that “The suggestion of Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el -Rufai, that zoning of the presidency and other key political offices should be de-emphasised in future elections especially that of 2023 has elicited some reactions”, because El-Rufai never mentioned zoning and the 2023 elections.

Before I reproduce the key submissions of Nasir El- Rufai,it’s absolutely important to address two issues; one is the nature of the man named Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, but popularly known as Nasir El – Rufai and the truly amazing nature of Nigerians. El-Rufai has variously been described as “controversial”, for not beating about the bush,”foul mouthed” for jibes at his political opponents and “heartless” for the bold decision to restore the Abuja master plan. It’s good to note that after him,Abuja has deteriorated because those after him for fear of being tagged controversial have refused to do the needful. For certain El- Rufai will speak his mind on any issue, no matter whose ox is gored and doesn’t colour things – in one word he as constant as the northern star. And there are abundant evidences that confirm that he speaks the truth. For instance in the “The Accidental Public Servant”,he named names and the “games” they played during the Olusegun Obasanjo years , but to date not one libel suit has been instituted against him speaks volume.

Nigeria is a paradox, just as Nigerians are truly amazing. The average Nigerian wants to eat his cake and have it and he sees absolutely nothing wrong in that. The other astonishing fact is that most times the position of an average Nigerian are defined by sheer expediencies – what he/she stands to personally gain or his “people”- no long term strategic thinking, nor thoughts about common good. On the political front, same Nigerians who clamour that zoning of political offices should be entrenched in the constitution, are vehemently opposed to quota system,an affirmative action that seeks to establish fair access to employment opportunities to all constituent parts of the federation. We must be clear about what we want- a united, just and prosperous country – otherwise every section should hold onto its advantage.

El-Rufai’s three (3) key submissions as contained in his contribution “Prologue 11 – Defeating A Determined Incumbent -The Nigerian Experience”,reproduced here for the benefit of Nigerians who Makinde had set out to mislead are; “Even with our success in the 2015 elections, there is room for improvement. Barriers to political equality, such as our seemingly entrenched though informal rule for zoning candidacies according to regions of origin, need to be deemphasized and ultimately abandoned in favour of an emphasis on qualification, competence and character.” El – Rufai’s thoughts which are perceptive, clearly argued, insightful and unambiguous didn’t in anyway mention the 2023 Elections, nor indicate in anyway that in 2023 the presidency shouldn’t be zoned to the South. The key words are “deemphasized” and “ultimately abandoned”. But Makinde falsely attributed to El-Rufai “alien thoughts”, to achieve determined political objectives. He certainly owes not just El-Rufai, but his readers an apology for misleading them, because the implications when the Makindes’ of this world concoct lies against politicians are dire, especially the lasting damage to the trust of people in politics and politicians.

Considering the attendant problems that political parties face in Nigeria, due to the problem of funding and which has provided godfathers, especially governors the leeway to control the parties, one would have thought that the suggestion by El-Rufai on the funding of parties would have generated interest considering that it will help put the parties on a solid foundation. Hear El-Rufai “The financing of political parties, candidates and campaigns remains opaque and by various oligarchs and so-called political godfathers. Many African countries are marked by savage inequalities, and a handful of individuals have the wherewhithal to hold the process hostage. We must work towards funding political parties via capped and fully disclosed donations and annual dues payable by every registered party member.” A governor providing the template of how their hold on the parties can be checked,in what can be termed class suicide is unheard of,but this didn’t catch fancy of hack writers because it’s not in the interest of their paymasters, to ensure that the parties belong to the people like the African National Congress(ANC). If the ANC where to be funded by former Presidents Mbeki and Zuma, there is no way the party would have forced them out of office. It’s matter of facts like this that that make some people tag El-Rufai controversial.

Finally, El-Rufai canvassed for the entrenchment of the rule of law,as opposed to the rule of power. The rule of law is clearly the ideal, because stands for the supremacy of law over the supremacy of the will of an individual. Advancement of the rule of law is central to his submission, which again is reproduced for be benefit of the readers; “In addition, improved processes and promotion of the rule of law are an imperative if politicians are to stop resorting to self-help–instigating violence and engaging in ethnic and religious mobilisation.” Again those who have formed their opinion about El-Rufai from the likes of Makinde, an enthusiastically blind hatchet writer will find it difficult to believe he would articulate such views. But the truth is that El-Rufai is a democrat.

The likes of Shehu Sani who is reportedly working for Tinubu’s presidential ambition have latched onto the big fat lies of Makinde for mischief purposes. Shehu Sani it must be noted, would jump at any opportunity to demonize El-Rufai who ensured his resounding defeat in the march 2019 elections. So when Shehu Sani declares that power must rotate to the South-West and not the South-East, it’s important that Nigerians take his statements with a pinch of the salt, because he is working for an interest – that of his friend- Bola Ahmed Tinubu despite his denials.

Like I argued earlier , Nigerians are confused about what they want. And Nasir El – Rufai is absolutely right that after 20 years of zoning, that there is a compelling need to deemphasis zoning and enthrone merit. It’s conversation that Nigerians must have,if not today certainly tomorrow, whether some interests in mortal fear of El-Rufai orchestrate outrages that are “contained” to a particular class.

If the South- West is honest that zoning of the presidency is between the North and South, the question that it must answer -one way or another- is why is it not throwing support behind the the South- East, the only zone in the South that hasn’t produced a president? The South-West needs to convince the South-South,and most especially the South -East that it’s not guilty of the same crime of political “domination” , it’s alleging against the North. He who goes to equity must go with clean hands- and on this issue is it going to equity with clean hands? This is an albatross the South-West must in sincere honesty and good conscience deal with.

The former Minister of Works Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe,is absolutely right that the north “may” still retain the presidency. But what he didn’t add, is that it will largely be due to the political miscalculation of the South-West,especially its astounding political shortsightedness, its winner takes all stance that played out in 2019, like adding the Speaker House of Representatives, to a portfolio that already has the Vice President – that’s certainly a huge blunder and should be a source of worry. Another strategic blunder is the vicious media war it has unleashed against El-Rufai, whose State in terms of voting strength can’t be ignored. It’s difficult to understand what the Tinubu camp hopes to achieve with its scorched earth strategy of demonizing El-Rufai, which confirms persistent political ignorance.

APC deceiving Igbos with 2023 presidency promise – Obasanjo

    …drums support for Atiku/Obi ticket

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday asked the Igbo to be wary of promises from the All Progressives Congress ahead of next year’s general elections.

Obasanjo, who spoke at a stakeholders’ meeting at Ukpor in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, said the APC had no plans to hand over the presidency of the country to the Igbo.

He urged the Igbo to take their destiny in their hands by getting united in the 2019 general elections and make a mark.

He said, “I urge you the Igbo not to allow anybody to relegate you to the background because you occupy a place of preeminence in this country.

The Igbo must bury their differences and work together for the actualisation of the Atiku/Obi project in their best interest. It’s dangerous to take the APC government seriously.”

Describing Peter Obi as a beacon of hope, Obasanjo asked him to reach out to major stakeholders in South-East to drum support for the 2019 PDP presidential project.

You and your presidential candidate have become the beacon of hope to all Nigerians who have had it so rough in the last four years.”

You need to think out of the box to take this country out of the woods caused by the incumbent clueless administrators.

With your pedigree as a governor, I’m hopeful that things will work again in Nigeria under your leadership as vice president.

In his welcome address, the first republic aviation minister, Chief Mbazuluke Amechi, described Obi as good man, adding that the Atiku/Obi ticket was needed at a time like this.
