Nigerian muslims in Mecca to hold special “Ṭawāf” for APC presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Nigerian Muslims in Mecca for this year’s hajj would have a special
“Ṭawāf” today for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, following his bid to become the next president of the country.

This was disclosed via Twitter on Wednesday night, by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

He said in his post: “We seek the favour of Allah and His blessings for
    @officialABAT in the next election.

“We are not testing Allah’s will and power but soliciting for His blessings and anointing because Allah is sufficient for us.

“We will have #Specialtawafforasiwaju in Mecca, tomorrow 28/4/22.”

Ṭawāf is one of the Islamic rituals of pilgrimage, which is done when Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba seven times, in a counterclockwise direction.

The circling is believed to demonstrate the unity of the believers in the worship of the One God, as they move in harmony together around the Kaaba, while supplicating to God.

Ex-Senator Shehu Sani reveals why Pastor Tunde Bakare is yet to purchase form for 2023 presidential race

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has revealed why popular Pentecostal pastor, Tunde Bakare, who declared interest in the 2023 presidential race, under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is yet to purchase form.

On his tweet, Wednesday, the former senator said: “My Great Pastor Bakare yet to get signal from heaven to purchase form.”

The Ogun State declared his interest at the ‘Unveiling Project 16 to Nigerians in diaspora’ event tagged “The portrait is a new Nigeria” held virtually on Saturday.

Bakare described the past administrations as “cake eaters” adding that it is time to have the 16th administration of “cake bakers.”

He was President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate in 2011 when the latter ran unsuccessfully in that year’s presidential poll.

    Pastor Tunde Bakare

Bakare’s declaration came on the same day the former governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, formally declared his intention to join the race to Aso Rock.

The cleric’s declaration also pits him against APC bigwigs, including the former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu; former Abia State governor, Orji Kalu; former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, and Governors Yahaya Bello and Dave Umahi of Kogi and Ebonyi states respectively.

  • APC presidential candidate, Adamu Garba seeks on Twitter #100m nomination form for party

APC presidential candidate, Adamu Garba seeks on Twitter #100m nomination form for party

Similar to Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, failed plan to spend N50 million on the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination forms ahead of the 2023 general elections, another presidential candidate of the party, Adamu Garba, has taken to social media to solicit for funds to enable him purchase it.

Recall that Ngige’s plans were disrupted after APC pegged the price for presidential forms at N100 million, leaving him to say his ‘supporters’ will raise the money.

Adamu, a strong supporter of the APC, was taken aback by the price of the form calling it “insensitive”.

Taking to his Twitter page, he wrote: “I’ve made my life so transparent that if the young generations of Nigeria follow me on Business and Politics, you’ll find it easy to navigate and build on my successes and avoid my failures without the need for reading a book.

“Follow me. Somebody got to do this for our generation.

    “Dear Nigerians,

“My project with you has started. To those of you who made pledges of donation, here is the account number

    *********** | Zenith.

“100M for the form is insensitive, but our collective contribution to get this form will send a strong signal that we care about Nigeria.”

The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had on Wednesday, fixed the cost of its interest form at N30 million and the nomination form at N70 million.

A 50 per cent discount was, however, approved for candidates less than 40 years and free tickets for women and persons living with disabilities.

Tinubu, Umahi, others attend Iftar dinner hosted by Aisha Buhari

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) were among the presidential aspirants that attended the Iftar dinner hosted by the First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Saturday, at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige; Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; one-time National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Barnabas Gemade; former Speaker Yakubu Dogara; and oil and gas mogul, Tein Jack-Rich were also in attendance.

As at 6:20pm, some of the dignitaries had started entering the venue of the event, which was slated to take off by 6:30pm in the invitation cards.

The First Lady had invited all presidential aspirants, across all political parties, to the Ramadan Iftar.

It was gathered that the invited personalities were instructed to drop their mobile devices at home and only carry their invitation cards, which would serve as the only entry permit for the event.

So far, those who have indicated interest to contest the Presidential election include Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi and former Presidents of the Senate, Anyim Pius Anyim and Bukola Saraki respectively.

Others are the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; his Kogi State counterpart, Yahaya Bello and that of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi; that of Sokoto and Bauchi states, Aminu Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed respectively.

Former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha; Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige; Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, businessman Isa Hayatudeen, among others have also indicated interest to contest the presidential elections next year.

However, the directive to the invitees not to approach the venue with phones would not apply to Osinbajo and other governors and ministers, who are expected to be at the meeting.

  • Why Goodluck Jonathan will join APC

Why Goodluck Jonathan will join APC

There are indications that former President Goodluck Jonathan will only be joining the All Progressives Congress presidential race on the condition that he is endorsed by the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Anything short of this would not be acceptable to Jonathan who served as deputy governor, governor, Vice-President and President on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party from 1999 and 2015.

Recall that in February, some northern emirs had reached out to the former President, asking him to contest.
Jonathan had also stayed away from activities of the PDP, including the last national convention.

Former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State had also stated that it was unlikely that Jonathan was still a member of the PDP as he was no longer involved in the party’s activities.

On Thursday, however, posters of the ex-President flooded the national secretariat of the APC on Blantyre Street, Wuse 2.

On Friday, youth and women groups demonstrated outside of Jonathan’s office in the Maitama area of Abuja.

The demonstrators, who arrived in five large buses, held up placards some of which read, ‘Jonathan, Please Run’, ‘Jonathan, do the needful’, ‘Jonathan for 2023’, ‘Jonathan Declare Now’ and ‘Goodluck Please Come Back, We Love You’.

A spokesman for the group, Mayor Samuel, who is also the Convener of the Youth Compatriots of Nigeria, said, “We were deceived and brainwashed by those who claimed they could do it in 2015.

“Now, we know better, under Jonathan the minimum wage could buy one or two bags of rice. What do we have today? We are begging President Jonathan to forgive us, we have realised our mistakes; we want him back to complete what he started.”

Jonathan subsequently invited the leaders of the protesters for a private meeting.

After the brief meeting, the ex-President addressed the demonstrators outside, advising the youths to run for office instead, adding that the constitution had been amended as far back as 2018 in order to give the youths a chance to contest.

The ex-President said he was not sure if he would run. He, however, asked them to ‘just watch out’.

“Yes you are calling me to come and declare for the next election, I cannot tell if I’m declaring. The political process is ongoing just watch out.

“The key role you must play is that Nigeria must get somebody that will carry young people along,” the former President added.

However, a top source in the APC said that the former President was seeking an assurance that he would be handed the party’s presidential ticket.

The APC chieftain, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Jonathan has already been President before. So, the APC cannot offer him anything except the presidential ticket. Imagine him contesting against Osinbajo and Tinubu and losing? Wouldn’t that be disgraceful?

“So, he has made his position clear. If he is to come to the APC, he must be given the assurance that he will be given the party’s ticket. That is his demand.”

The source added that the former President may be sold as a “compromise candidate” amid the raging zoning debate in the country.

“Jonathan is the only Nigerian alive that can promise to serve only one presidential term and abide by it because he is limited by the constitution.

“If he serves one term, then power returns to the North. It is also not an easy decision but I can assure you that President Buhari will have no qualms with a Jonathan Presidency,” he added.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the APC National Working Committee would give special waivers to select aspirants based on the powers conferred on it by the National Executive Committee.

Section 31.3 of the new APC constitution titled ‘waiver’, reads in part, “Subject to the approval of the National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee may, in special circumstances, grant a waiver to a person seeking a national party office, who is otherwise not qualified under this constitution if, in its opinion, such a waiver is in the best interest of the party.

“Subject to the approval of the National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee may, in special circumstances, grant a waiver to a person seeking the office of President, Vice President, governor, deputy governor, senator, member of the House Representatives, who is otherwise not qualified under this constitution if, in its opinion, such a waiver is in the best interest of the party.”

The Nigerian constitution and the Electoral Act state that anyone contesting a presidential election must be a member of a political party which will sponsor him as a candidate.

However, both the constitution and the Electoral Act do not prohibit non-party members from participating in a primary.

A member of the party’s NEC asserted that waivers would be on a case-by-case basis.

Women, youth groups urge Goodluck Jonathan to contest in 2023 Presidential election

Inscriptions like, “Goodluck Declare Now; Goodluck we love you come back; Goodluck we want you back; Goodluck Jonathan Nigeria’s destiny is in your hand,” were seen on Friday as hundreds of supporters, including women and youth groups stormed the office of former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

They arrived at the office of former President Goodluck Jonathan with a musical band around 8:50 a.m.

Calling on him to contest for President in 2023, the supporters lamented that since he left office, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, among others have become the order of the day.

According to the supporters, both men and women have turned to beggars because of the unfavorable policies of the present administration.

Speaking, Ms. Ngozi Okafor said since the former President left in 2015, both men and women have been suffering.

She said, “Since he left the seat, we have been suffering, children are dying, we are tired. We have turned into beggars, women are begging, children are begging. We don’t need Baba Buhari again. Our children are no longer going to school.”

The supporters were armed with placards with various inscriptions like, “Goodluck Declare Now; Goodluck we love you come back; Goodluck we want you back; Goodluck Jonathan Nigeria’s destiny is in your hand.”

  • Pastor Ibiyeomie says his “strange wisdom” can lift Nigeria out of economic woes

Pastor Ibiyeomie says his “strange wisdom” can lift Nigeria out of economic woes

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministry has said his “strange wisdom” is capable of lifting the nation from its current economic predicament.

Speaking during a sermon in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital, the renowned clergy said he would be revealing an idea that would transform the nation’s economy to whoever emerges as Nigerian President in 2023.

In his words: “I stood here before service started and strange wisdom came to me, which I will never share again, I will only share it to whoever comes to power in Nigeria. I will sit with the person and I will tell the person I am giving you this idea, tell the world that I gave you, if you don’t write it, I won’t give you.

”I can tell you, the wisdom I have today will bring Nigeria out of its economic woes. But I will never share it again. I have strange wisdom that will take Nigeria out of economic woes, but whoever becomes the president is who I will give it to and I will tell the person to sign that this idea came from me.”

According to the pastor, Nigeria’s problem can be attributed to the lack of wisdom, saying his love for the country would make him reveal the idea without charges.

“I will not insult the person but the person must sign. I will give the person the idea and tell him to sign my papers that I gave you this idea, free of charge because I love Nigeria. All that is causing Nigeria’s crisis is a lack of wisdom, it’s not the devil, it’s not the oil. Oil crisis is not what is causing the problem, it’s lack of wisdom”, he added.

  • 2023 Presidential aspirant drags NASS, others to court over university certificate

2023 Presidential aspirant drags NASS, others to court over university certificate

A presidential aspirant, Julius Musa Lagware, on Friday, asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the National Assembly (NASS) from proceeding with the proposed bill seeking to increase the minimum qualification for those aspiring to contest the presidential election and other offices.

Lagware, in a suit filed by his lawyer, Pius Danba Pius, wants among others, an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents and their agents from taking any action on the proposed bill seeking to raise the educational qualification for anybody seeking to contest election to the office of President, Governor, Senator and House of Representatives from school certificate to the degree certificate.

Listed as respondents in the fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/ 222/2022 are the National Assembly, House of Representatives and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The plaintiff wants the court to declare that “the National Assembly lacks the power to enact a law that is likely or about to discriminate and/or disenfranchise the Applicant and all other persons with school certificate from participating in the electoral process or contesting election for the office of President, Governor, Senator or Member of House of Representatives by requiring the Applicant to obtain degree certificate at his expense without provision of free tertiary education by the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

He also wants the court to declare that “the action of the National Assembly via House of Representatives by proposed bill seeking to raise educational qualification to contest election to the office of President, Governor, Senator and House of Representatives from school certificate to degree certificate is against the constitutional principles of democracy, freedom, equality, justice and likely or about to violate the Applicant’s fundamental right to freedom from discrimination, right to association and right to equal participation in the government of Nigeria.”

Lagware, an indigene of Nasarawa State, argued that the bill is against the Nigerian constitutional principles of democracy, freedom, equality, justice and is likely or about to violate his fundamental right from discrimination, right to association and right to equal participation in the government of Nigeria.

Citing the provisions of the constitution, and order 11 Rule 3 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, the applicant argued that he has the fundamental right to participate freely in the government of Nigeria.

The plaintiff in a supporting affidavit stated that having struggled to acquire his secondary certificate and was desirous of further education, but held down by poverty, his inability to acquire a degree certificate should not constitute a bridge to violate his right to contest political office and aspire to lead the country.

He argued that the bill is self-seeking and targeted at denying the children of the poor the right to contest as most of them could not afford university education only to benefit children of the national assembly members who could afford it.

Lagware stated that “the proposed bill seeking to raise educational qualification to contest election to the office of President, Governor, Senator and House of Representatives from school certificate to degree certificate is contrary to the constitutional principles of democracy, freedom, equality, justice.

“The proposed bill is likely or about to violate/contravene or take away my fundamental right to freedom from discrimination, right to association and right to equal participation in the government of Nigeria.

“The proposed bill is discriminatory against me as the National Assembly seek to disenfranchise me and all other persons without degree certificate and stop me from contesting an election in my own country.

“University education is expensive and I cannot afford it as well as the majority of other Nigerians who do not have degree certificate.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria does not provide free tertiary education and thus, myself and majority of Nigerians without degree certificate will be denied our fundamental right to participate in governance in Nigeria by contesting election to the office of President, Governor, Senator and Member House of Representatives.

“I can read and write and I can effectively perform the functions of the office of President, Governor, Senator and Member House of Representatives without the need for a degree certificate.

“The proposed bill is highly discriminatory and is made to prejudice me and other poor people who cannot afford university education in favour of the rich who can afford a university education.

“All officers of the National Assembly are rich and they can afford a university education for themselves and their children.”

Meanwhile, no date has yet been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

  • Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai pledges to support any Southern presidential candidate

Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai pledges to support any Southern presidential candidate

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, Thursday in Abuja has said he is not nursing any ambitions in the 2023 elections.

He also stated that he would support any candidate who emerged from his party’s zoning structure, even if the candidate was from the South.

El-Rufai said this during the weekly ministerial press briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the presidential villa, Abuja.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents, he said, “I have zero ambitions. I just want

to finish this job, get on with my private life, write another book, and make tons of money. The largest amount of money I ever got in my life was from writing Accidental Public Servant.

“I have no ambition; I’ve never had any ambition. And if I die today, I am quite accomplished and happy because I never in my life, based on my humble background, ever thought I would even

enter this building ever in my life; how?

“God has been very kind to me. And my outings in public service have all been satisfactory? Why push my luck and go for a job with a 90 per cent chance of failure? So I’m not an ambitious person. I’m just a person that gets things done when given the opportunity. I’ve never desired to run even for this governorship.

“It was President Buhari that literally forced me to run. He insisted that some of us run for governorship just in case he did not get elected again. He felt that you know, we needed some ‘strong governance’. Those were the words he used. So I have no aspirations.”

Asked if he would support a South-West candidate, the former FCT Minister said, “I will support any APC candidate if I’m satisfied he will do the best for Nigeria. It doesn’t matter whether he’s from southwest, southeast or south-south; APC is what matters and the quality of the person.

“The discussion we are having is that the Presidency is zoned to the South. It’s not zoned to any particular place in the South. The South will have the first go at it. But we’re waiting to see who the aspirants are.”
