  • Zelensky warns of more Russian attacks before 2023

Zelensky warns of more Russian attacks before 2023

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned the people of his country of further Russian attacks in the few remaining days of 2022.

“We must be aware that our enemy will try to make this time dark and difficult for us,” he said in his daily video address on Sunday evening.

He said Russia had lost everything it could lose this year, adding: “But it is trying to compensate for its losses with the cunning of its propagandists, after the missile attacks on our country, on our energy sector.

“I know that darkness will not prevent us from leading the occupiers to their new defeats.

“But we must be prepared for any scenario,” he continued.

Zelensky directed sharp words at the Russian military, which killed at least 16 people and wounded another 64 with artillery attacks in Kherson in the south of the country on Saturday.

“Brutes,” he said. “We will find every murderer.”

Russia announced in the autumn that it was annexing Kherson, before Ukrainian forces retook the city as Russian troops retreated to the other side of the Dnipro river.

From there they have bombarded the city with artillery, according to Ukrainian sources.

Russian officers were injured after an attack on a Russian command post in the Kherson region, according to the Ukrainian armed forces on Sunday.

It was unclear how many had died but at least 70 officers were injured after Kiev’s forces attacked during a meeting in the village of Zabaryne, the army said on Sunday.

Ukrainian fighters have attacked Russian command centres and command posts repeatedly since the start of the invasion, locating them by monitoring radio traffic or the mobile phone network.

Several senior Russian officers have died in similar attacks.

Volodymyr Saldo, the governor of the region appointed by Russia, rejected the Ukrainian allegations, insisting that it was Ukrainian forces who were bombarding the city and accusing them of terrorism.

“This is repulsive provocation with the apparent aim of attributing blame to the Russian forces,” he said.

He insisted that the nature of the destruction indicated artillery fire from Ukrainian-held territory to the north and north-west of the city.

The Kremlin insists that the entire Kherson region is Russian territory and will not be surrendered.

Meanwhile as Moscow’s forces seek to overpower the southern region, they are also battling for control of eastern Ukraine, with heavy clashes over the town of Bakhmut.

However, Kiev’s fighters inflicted “heavy losses” on the invaders there, according to a Ukrainian military spokesperson.

At least 50 Russian soldiers have been killed and another 80 wounded since Saturday alone, according to Serhii Chervatko, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Army Group East.

The figures could not be independently verified.

Bakhmut is seen as a critical point along the front in eastern Ukraine, as any breakthrough here would allow Russian troops to advance deep behind Ukrainian lines. Ukrainian fighters have transformed the town into a fortress in their attempts to defend it.

The head of administration of the Luhansk region, Serhii Haidai, said that alongside regular Russian troops, Wagner mercenaries and Chechen fighters sent by the republic’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov had failed in their attacks on Bakhmut.

“They want to show the bunker grandpa (Russian President Vladimir Putin) what they can do,” he said on Telegram, adding: “But so far they are only losing thousands of soldiers who will remain there forever.”

In spite of Putin’s repeated hints at his willingness to talk in the Ukraine war, Kiev thinks nothing of the Russian president’s words.

“Russia does not want negotiations and is trying to evade responsibility (for the War).

“This is obvious, so we are moving towards a tribunal,” Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to Zelensky, tweeted on Sunday.

Kiev thinks that Russia’s political and military leadership should stand trial for the war before an international tribunal modelled on the Nuremberg trials of the Nazis in World War II.

“Russia alone attacked Ukraine and is killing its citizens,” Podolyak further wrote. There are no other “sides, motives or geopolitics,” he added.

  • Ilaje/Ese-Odo 2023: Arogbo/Ijaw People Are Interlopers – Former PDP Gov Aspirant

Ilaje/Ese-Odo 2023: Arogbo/Ijaw People Are Interlopers – Former PDP Gov Aspirant

A frontline PDP governorship aspirant in the 2020 election in Ondo state, Hon. Banji Okunomo has said it is an insult for Arogbo/ Ijaw people to drag the House of Representatives seat with Ilaje in Ondo South Senatorial district.

Okunomo described the Arogbo/Ijaw people as interlopers in Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal constituency.

He admonished Ilaje leaders supporting anyone outside Ilaje and Apoi ethnic nationalities to withdraw the gesture, saying such was a betrayal of the Yoruba interest.

Okunomo, like the PDP House of Representatives candidate, Hon. Kolade Akinjo, hails from Ilaje local government while main challenger of the lawmaker’s (Akinjo) third term bid is the Ondo State former Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo who hails from Ijaw Arogbo in Ese-Odo local government.

But Okunomo who spoke at the PDP stakeholders forum at Igbokoda,  headquarters of Ilaje Local Government opined that Ilaje Ese-Odo Federal Constituency belonged to the Ilaje and Apoi sub-ethnic groups of the Yoruba Nation.

The former chairman of Ilaje local government said:”It is an insult for anyone outside, especially interlopers and strangers from Bayelsa State to contend the House of Representatives seat with the Ilaje and Apoi people.

“This is a Yoruba state and it is only when Ilajes are tired and have something bigger that we can allow Ese-Odo to take Reps, and even at that, we know our friends and brothers, the Apois, they are the ones to have it and not some strangers from nowhere.

“This federal constituency is a Yoruba heritage, it is our heritage so those Ilaje leaders who are running after the APC are only betrayers of our common cause. We must ensure we keep this that belongs to us in Ilaje.

“By our arrangement in the PDP, we have given the Senate seat to the Apoi, so let’s vote for them and vote for our own, Kolade Akinjo of the PDP so that once and for all, we can stop the interlopers and stamp out authority in this federal constituency.

  • 2023: Tinubu will care for the Igbos – Gbajabiamila

2023: Tinubu will care for the Igbos – Gbajabiamila

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep Femi Gbajabiamila says the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu will serve the interests of all parts of Nigeria if elected in 2023.

Gbajabiamila made the statement on Saturday in Lagos, while speaking at the Surulere Constituency 2 APC Town Hall meeting.

He said the APC presidential candidate was passionate about the development of Nigeria, adding he would care for all the people of the country if elected.

“One thing I can assure all Nigerians is that when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu becomes the president of this country, he will be president for all.

“He will care for the Yoruba people, he will care for South South , he will care for the Igbos, he will care for the Nupes and the northerners.

“He is the only candidate that has proven himself well.He has the capacity and will deliver”, Gbajabiamila said.

The Speaker particularly appealed to Igbos to invest their votes in Tinubu to take the country to greater heights .

He said it was unfair not to vote for Tinubu, simply because he is not from the South East or any other region apart from his.

Gbajabiamila said Tinubu had done well for the Igbos and urged people from the region to give him all the support to lead the country.

“To our brothers and sisters from the South East, has Asiwaju done anything to offend anybody in the South East? Has he done anything wrong?

“Tell me one state in Nigeria where you have a non -indigene in the cabinet. I can tell you ,the only state where that happens is Lagos state.

“The Director-General of Budget Office in Nigeria, one of the highest positions in Nigeria, what is his name? Ben Akabueze. Is he from from Lagos? No ,he is from the South East and Asiwaju put him there.

” He determines the budget.Whatever any money any agency or department is looking for, it must come Akabueze’s table. He determines whether to give or not to give. That is a man from the South East, put there by Asiwaju Tinubu.

“And I can give you many more names. So, why will a man that has done much for the Igbos now come to you for votes ,and you tell him he has not done bad ,he has done well ,but because he is not from the South East ,we have somebody from the South East to vote for. I think that is not the way to go,” he said .

Gbajabiamila said the 2023 election was about the progress of the country, and urged Nigerians to vote for competence rather than tribe or religion .

APC remains only option for Nigerians – Bagudu

He said the nation’s security situation had continued to improve, adding that the military and other security agencies were not relenting in their efforts to sustain the feat.

“The matching order by Mr president to improve the security situation so that he can hand over a secured nation is what we are carrying out in collaboration with the Nigerian Air force, Navy and other security agencies.

  • 2023: Court affirms judgment sacking Al-Mustpha, others as AA candidates

2023: Court affirms judgment sacking Al-Mustpha, others as AA candidates

A Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja, on Thursday, rejected an application to set aside its Nov. 4 judgment recognising the candidates produced by Dr Adekunle Rufai Omo-Aje-led leadership of the Action Alliance (AA) party.

Justice Zainab Abubakar, in a ruling, held that the application filed by Kenneth Obidiche Udeze-led factional leadership lacked merit.

Justice Abubakar had in the Nov. 4 judgement ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept the candidates submitted for 2023 general elections by the Omo-Aje leadership of the AA.

The judge also directed the electoral umpire to reject those candidates produced by the factional leader, Udeze, among whom is Major Hamzat Al-Mustpha (rtd.).

But Udeze, whose suspension and expulsion as the AA national chairman had been upheld in two judgments of the Court of Appeal, had applied to the FHC, Abuja to set aside the Nov. 4 judgment, claiming it was obtained by fraud and that he was still the party’s national chairman.

Delivering the ruling on Thursday, Justice Abubakar said that, with the two subsisting judgments of the Court of Appeal and another decision by a FHC in Abeokuta, Udeze cannot lawfully lay claim to being the chairman of the party.

The two judgments of the Court of Appeal were delivered on Jan. 7 and Nov. 11 while the ruling by the Abeokuta FHC was delivered on Sept. 8 by Justice J. O. Abdulmalik in a suit marked: FHC/AB/CS/120/2022.

The judge held that her earlier judgment delivered on Nov. 4 was not obtained by fraud as claimed by Udeze.

She described Udeze as a busy body and meddlesome interloper, trying to interfere in the affairs of the party from which he was suspended and later expelled.

    Abubakar consequently dismissed the suit.

Al-Mustapha, the former aide to late Gen. Sani Abacha, won the presidential primary election of the party conducted by Udeze faction with a total of 506 votes, defeating Samson
Odupitan, his only opponent, on June 9 in Abuja.

I’ll campaign for Tinubu, APC candidates with energy – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates that he will ensure electoral victory for the party’s presidential and other candidates in the 2023 general elections.

The president gave the assurance in a statement by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, he is ready at all times to campaign for the presidential candidate and all party candidates with “full energy and conviction.”

The president stated that the assurance was meant to dispel expressed concerns in certain quarters that he had not featured in campaigns since the national launch in Jos, Plateau.

He, however, stressed that while he remained committed to party politics, the functions and duties of the president would equally be upheld at times.

Shehu recalled that the president while speaking to the Nigerian community in Washington DC in the course of his recent visit to the United States, stressed what he said all the time that he was ready to campaign for the party’s victory in the general elections next year.

The president said that the APC campaigns had so far been the most aggressive in recent history.

“They have been impressive and of a high voltage, ” compared to the opposition that seems to be playing catch-up.”

Buhari expressed strong optimism that the party would win all the elections fairly and squarely.
