Borno crowd excites me – NNPP presidential candidate, Kwankwaso

The Presidential candidate of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, said he was excited by the large crowd that received him in Maiduguri, reinforcing the hope of his party in 2023.

Kwankwaso, who spoke to newsmen in Maiduguri on Sunday, said the crowd who defied the heavy downpour to welcome him, showed how eager the people of Borno wanted change from status quo.

“Look at how people came out; I was so excited, I was so happy that the people of Borno are now very ripe for a change.

“If only the people I saw on arrival yesterday will vote for us I can assure you we will win Borno,” Kwankwaso said.

The presidential candidate said that people across Nigeria were buying into NNPP which he adopted few months ago, adding that before the election in next year, particularly when campaigns would start, the party would shock Nigerians with its popularity.

“The more you know Kwankwaso the more you like him. The more you know kwankwasiyya the more the love..

“We will take that goodwill to the south as we have offices from ward to state levels all over Nigeria and we are fielding candidates for all positions across Nigeria,” Kwankoso said.

He commended President Buhari for signing the Electoral Act and called for a commitment to free and fair election.

While condemning those speculating that he would step down for some candidates, Kwankwaso described such speculations as mischievous and needed to be stopped for real contenders to face issue based campaign.

“Let us start the campaigns, we will separate between the chaff and grains.

“Some people are saying that there may be no winner in the first round of voting but from our camp we believed that we are going to win in the first ballot by the grace of God, ” Kwankwaso said.

APC lucky to have salable presidential candidate – Ex-minister

The former Minister of Communications, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, said on Saturday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was very lucky to have a salable Presidential flagbearer for the 2023 election.

Shittu, who is the Director-General of Asiwaju Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation (ATPCO), made the statement at the inauguration of ‘Jagaban/Shettima Local Government Voluntary Representatives Forum’ and its First National Meeting, held in Abuja.

He said that the emergence of Tinubu as the presidential candidate of APC was the best thing that happened to the party in view of the current challenges bedeviling the country.

Shittu said that the performances of Tinubu when he was the Lagos State Governor were enough testimony to convince Nigerians that ”he is the best candidate for presidency.”

According to him, before Tinubu became the Lagos State Governor in 1999, the Internally Generated Revenue of the state was N700 million per month and within two years he turned it to N50 billion monthly.

He also said that Tinubu introduced compulsory free primary and secondary education in Lagos, including payment of West Africa Examination Council and National Examination Council for all residents of Lagos, irrespective of ethic nationality without discrimination.

” I told a lot of our leaders that we are very lucky in All Progressives Congress (APC), because, we have a salable candidate.

” We are lucky, we have a salable candidate, as Director-General of Tinubu Campaign Organisation, I am excited by the enormous support that people are giving to Tinubu all over the country.

” More often than not, people struggle to belong as if the struggle is for ticket to go to paradise,” he said.

  • INEC’ll be bold, courageous in conducting 2023 elections – Chairman

INEC’ll be bold, courageous in conducting 2023 elections – Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said it has learned from the recently conducted Ekiti and Osun governorship elections ahead of 2023 general elections.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, made this known in Abuja at the Yiaga Africa  Post-election Roundtable and Public Presentation of Final Report on the Observation of the 2022 Ekiti and Osun Governorship Elections.

Yakubu, represented by Mr Festus Okoye, INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, said the commission would continue to listen and learn from valuable lessons from those who observed the governorship elections.

He said, “I want to seize this opportunity to assure Nigerians that this present commission will be bold and courageous in prosecuting the 2023 general elections.

“We will continue to harvest lessons from the Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti, and the Osun governorship elections in shaping the way we approach the 2023 general election.

” We are going to harvest all the good practices, we are also going to look at some of those issues we did not do so well and we will improve on them.

“Our assurance is that this commission will  not lower the bar and we are going to  continue  to upload polling unit results to our INEC  results  viewing portal  this commission will not depart from it.”

Yakubu said that citizens would be involved in every inch of the process in terms of knowing what is going on at the various polling units through INEC,s processes and procedures.

He added the commission would continue to also manage the results collation process transparently.

He encouraged civil society organisations, the media, political parties, and all the critical stakeholders to study the Electoral Act 2022 and have a working knowledge of the act.

He said unless there is good knowledge of the document, it would be very difficult to follow the trajectory of the electoral process, the innovations, and some of the changes the commission would make.

He also pleaded for the understanding and cooperation of Nigerians.

“We recognise the fact that the 2023 elections will be challenging, but we have the capacity and we also have the courage to face those challenges in a very broad and courageous manner,” he assured.

Dr Hussain Abdu, Board Chair, Yiaga Africa, said the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections marked a very significant turning point for electoral history in the country.

He said this was more important as they were held after the amendment of the Electoral Act,  particularly the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He, however, said that logistics remained one major challenge of the electoral process, adding that the event was aimed at looking at some of the electoral challenges from past elections to chat a way forward for 2023.

“Citizens are beginning to believe that their votes will count and when you raise the hope of citizens is always better that if you cannot improve on what you have done, then you must sustain it,” he said.

Abdu also called on INEC to address the challenge of disproportional polling units where some units would be overcrowded with thousands of voters whereas other areas would be scanty.

He urged INEC to work on its logistics and the distribution of voters to polling units among others and called on all stakeholders to work collectively towards achieving a better electoral process ahead of the 2023 elections.

The Chairman of the Inter-party Advisory  Council (IPAC), Mr. Yabagi Sani, advised Yiaga Africa and INEC to work closely with political parties ahead of 2023 because the election would be a watershed in the journey of entrenching democracy in the country.

Sani urged INEC not to rest on its oars but continue to work to build the confidence of citizens to own the process and promote democracy.

He added that “As political parties, we observed that there is still a lacuna that all of us must have to weigh in ,that is the transmission of electoral results form polling units.

“Yes, you transmit the results to the INEC portal but the biggest issue which is why our elections are questionable is the issue of collation because there is a saying that it is not those that vote that determine who wins but those who count.”

Ms Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes, Yiaga Africa, while presenting the summary of the report said it covered the pre-election environment, INEC’s preparation, security atmosphere, voter education and critical incidents at the elections.

Mbamalu said the report recommended that the National Assembly should expedite action in passing the National Electoral Offences Commission Bill to allow for the arrest and protection of electoral violators.

She urged INEC to revisit voter allocation to polling units for equitable distribution of voters, prioritise an audit of voter register to avoid duplication and the inter-agency committee should be expanded to include anti-graft agencies among others.

She said the report called on security agencies to be neutral and professional during election duties, build early warning systems against violence and develop strategic ways to prevent vote-buying.

She said the report urged political parties to engage in issue-based campaigns, refrain from vote-buying, calling the media to remain professional, while CSOs should continue increased voter education.

  • Former Police IG, Mike Okiro campaigns for Tinubu, says he’ll fix Nigeia

Former Police IG, Mike Okiro campaigns for Tinubu, says he’ll fix Nigeia

A former Inspector-General of Police (I-G) Mr. Mike Okiro, said since Sen. Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress( APC) 2023 presidential candidate fixed Lagos as a  governor, he would be able to fix Nigeria.

Okiro made this known on Friday in Abuja at the unveiling of the summit planning committee for Tinubu’s support group, ‘Defect Together Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2023.’

According to him, Tinubu is a man with foresight and capacity to fix Nigeria, because his developmental legacy were glaring.

“When Tinubu became the governor of Lagos, criminality was at its highest peak in Lagos, robbery, killing, OPC, everything was in shambles and people were running away from Lagos.

“Then, Asiwaju made a special request to the I-G that if he wanted Lagos to be peaceful, he should bring Okiro back to Lagos.

“That was how I found myself back in Lagos, so I worked along with him to be able to keep Lagos calm.

”I left Lagos in glory to the extent that I was promoted from Commissioner of Police to DIG, all glory goes to Asiwaju.

“If as Governor of Lagos, he did it, I have no doubt in my mind, therefore, that given this onerous task of championing the course of the entire Nigeria, he is going to replicate what he did in Lagos,” he said.

Okiro said that although he was campaigning for Tinubu, ”but it is what I know I am only telling you that one plus one is two.”

Okiro commended the group for selecting him as its Chairman, Board of Trustees and pledged his support to make the vision come true.

Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, the group’s Chairman, said that Okiro was chosen as BOT chairman because of his wealth of experience, exposure and knowledge.

“He had contributed immensely to the development of the nation and had a credible career with the Nigeria Police Force, rising to the position of I-G and served as chairman, Police Service Commission.

“He is a destribalised Nigerian, who has earned the respect of most Nigerians, this, in a nutshell, is what informed our choice of him.

“He will bring his wealth of experience, exposure, goodwill, and foresight to being our chairman because we believe in him to be able to guide us to the promised land,” he said.

Dr. Umar Yakasai, Deputy National Campaign Director of the movement, said the group made painstaking search before settling on Okiro to add value to its quest of Tinubu’s ambition to fix Nigeria.

Yakasai said, ”this is in view of Okiro’s long-term closeness to Tinubu and his vantage position to spur other eminent persons to support the group’s plan.

“Okiro initiated the idea of the Amnesty Programme that doused the tension in the Niger Delta region during the late Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration, which guaranteed peace in that region.

“So, in all ramifications, Sir Mike Okiro qualifies to be recognised as a foremost statesman in Nigeria, ” he added.

  • Tinubu is far better than Peter Obi – Reno Omokri

Tinubu is far better than Peter Obi – Reno Omokri

A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri,  has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a better leader than Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Omokri, while outlining Tinubu’s achievements in series of tweets, explained Obi lacks the characteristics necessary to lead the country compared to the former governor of Lagos State.

He described how both presidential candidates led their respective States, stating Obi invested Anambra resources at a loss but Tinubu invested Lagos resources to make huge profit for the state.

His tweet reads: “In terms of how they governed their states, Peter Obi is no match for Tinubu. Tinubu invested Lagos money in Econet and made a huge profit. Obi invested Anambra money in SABMIller and got a massive loss. But are we ready for this conversation without altercation? #TableShaker

“In terms of managing men and money, Tinubu is far better than Obi, though I agree he is a crook. He increased Lagos’s IGR revenue far better than Obi did in Anambra. And he installed successors that are loyal to him, while Obiano fell out with Obi within months! #TableShaker.”

  • Tinubu not for cash and carry, container economy – Alake

Tinubu not for cash and carry, container economy – Alake

The Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council says that Sen. Bola Tinubu, the APC 2023 presidential candidate, is not concerned about cash and carry or container economy, but for something more enduring for Nigerians

Mr Dele Alake, the council’s Director of Strategic and Communication said this while speaking in a current affairs programme on Tuesday night.

Alake, however, noted that the economy, security and the vision of a particular presidential candidate to deal with them would influence voting decisions in the elections.

He added that Nigeria needed a leader with vision, knowledge and courage, attributes he said Tinubu embodied.

“There is no gainsaying the fact of all the candidates competing for votes to solve these problems, Tinubu stands far ahead of the competitors.

“In terms of track record of performance as a governor, in terms of  leadership, social engineering, mental development, Tinubu is an embodiment of all the leadership qualities for a country eager to develop,” Alake said.

He said Tinubu as Lagos State Governor for two-terms, left records yet to be beaten and built the Lekki Free Trade Zone and a new city – the Atlantic City out of the Atlantic Ocean.

He added that Tinubu turned the Bar Beach around and saved it from ocean surge.

“While the then Federal Government was sand-filling the ocean, literally pouring sand worth  billions of naira into the ocean.

“Tinubu conceived a permanent and enduring solution, we travelled to South Africa, we went to the Netherlands and found a solution that today, led to the Atlantic City, ‘’ Alake said.

On the third force movement triggered by Peter Obi, Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Alake said he could not deny the groundswell of frustration among Nigerian youths that led to the movement.

This, he said, was the driving force of Obi’s popularity on social media, adding that the feeling was natural and the pent-up anger real.

He noted that as Nigerians, we all had opinions on how things should be or ought to be, saying that this was what was being aggregated on social media.

He, however, added that social media would not determine the outcome of 2023 general elections.

“The population of the social media warriors will not necessarily translate into votes, especially among rural dwellers, whoever is basing Obi’s popularity on social media, has missed it,” Alake said.

He said the APC presidential campaign council would deal with the Obi problem when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) authorised the begining of campaign at the end of September.

He, however, explained that there was no basis of comparison between Tinubu and Obi, saying that many of Obi’s social media supporters were in it for entertainment and not because they were committed.

He said supporters of Obi had not really analysed his performance as a governor or his antecedents.

“If you put all the antecedents of the candidates on a table, Obi will trail far behind the others.

“There is no basis of comparison between Obi and Tinubu, the difference is clear. It’s like that between the fluke and the substance”, Alake stressed.

  • 2023: IPOB rejects Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi

2023: IPOB rejects Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi

The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), has distanced itself from the Labour party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Igbo presidency, saying their agitation is clear from day one.

IPOB reiterated that it’s neither interested in an Igbo President nor a Nigerian President of Southeast extraction.

The group said its members are not part of Obi’s supporters because they are interested in Nigeria’s disintegration.

This information was contained in a statement signed and released by IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful.

Powerful, the spokesman of the separatist group, said Nigeria was irredeemable.

Powerful’s statement reads in part: “The Igbo people rallying behind Peter Obi are not IPOB members because IPOB’s goal is the disintegration of the Nigerian enterprise irrespective of whether Peter Obi or anyone else from the Biafran geographic space is contesting in the Nigerian farce of an election.

“IPOB is a freedom fighting movement and has nothing whatsoever to do with or in Nigerian politics. So long as we in IPOB are concerned, Nigeria is irredeemable.”

IPOB also reiterated its call for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and a referendum in the Southeast.

The Indigenous People of Biafra is a nationalist separatist group in Nigeria that aims to restore the Republic of Biafra, a country that seceded from Nigeria before the Nigerian Civil War and later rejoined Nigeria after its defeat by the Nigerian military
