2023: Don’t make election a do or die affair, Sultan cautions politicians

…insists all is not well with Nig

Chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and. Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Tuesday, stated that all is not well with Nigeria and warned the political elite against making the 2023 elections a do or die affair.

Abubakar who spoke at the National Unity Conference of The Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (AANI) also disclosed that the fears about the state of the nation has been conveyed to President Muhammadu Buhari on several occasions.

The Sultan said the problem of Nigeria could only be addressed by citizens, adding that the people must retrace their steps towards building a better society.

“If anyone is telling you that everything is well in this country, he is telling you lies.

“We have had so many times to say it in front of Mr. President.

“Things are not normal and I think to know that you have a problem, you have half of the solution.

“Let us continue to talk to one another, let us not get tired of talking to one another,” he said.

Abubakar advised Nigerians to see their diversity as an act of God, adding that God was not wrong to have brought different ethnic groups together.

2023: Catholic Bishops urge members to vote only Nigerians with proven integrity

    …decry alarming insecurity across Nigeria

… demand adequate prosecution of kidnappers, criminal elements

    …condemn vote buying

Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have urged their members to vote for Nigerians that have proven integrity in the 2023 general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre, Orlu, Imo State, 8 – 16 September 2022.

The Bishops asserted in the communiqué entitled: ‘The Threshold Of A New Dawn In NIGERIA’ that “Politics is a noble vocation. We, therefore, encourage all politicians to uphold the values of integrity and decency.

“We strongly condemn as unlawful and sinful all forms of vote selling and buying and advise all politicians and voters to refrain from doing so.

“While it is not our responsibility as religious leaders to dictate to political parties the choices of their presidential, vice presidential and other candidates, we have the duty to advise the citizenry to bear in mind the implications of these choices while electing the next set of leaders.

“We, therefore, renew our call on all our faithful, laity and clergy alike, to come out en masse to vote for people of unassailable integrity, who have the good character, capacity and track record to lead our nation out of the present socio-political and economic doldrums, irrespective of party, religious and ethnic affiliations.

“It is through the right political choices that our current situation can be ameliorated.

On insecurity in the country, the clerics noted that:” We continue to decry the worsening state of insecurity in our nation as well as activities of terrorists and insurgents, kidnappers and bandits.

” Armed robbery and cybercrimes have continued unabated. Attacks on travellers and worshippers in Churches and other places of worship have become too frequent.

“An instance is the recent mass shooting and bombing attacks on St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, on Pentecost Sunday, 5 June 2022, in which 41 worshippers were killed and 70 grievously injured.

“All these have led to an incessant loss of lives and destruction of property of innocent people. We express our heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved and pray for the eternal repose of the deceased.

“Regrettably, the government has not lived up to its duties with regard to security. We observe that even when suspects have been arrested, there is not even diligent prosecution of the culprits of these nefarious acts, thereby leaving the citizenry helpless and despairing.

“While we continue to call on civil authorities to stand up to their constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians, we enjoin all to strengthen security measures in their homes and institutions. We call on all citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant, and to shun all forms of violence and criminality.

    PREAMBLE
“We, the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, held our Second Plenary Meeting for the year at the Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre, Orlu, Imo State, from 8 to 16 September 2022. Having prayerfully reflected on issues affecting the Church and the Nigerian State, we now issue this Communiqué:

THE CHURCH, POLITICS AND THE COMMON GOOD
“The Church teaches that politics is for the common good, in which it finds its full justification and significance and the source of its inherent legitimacy (cf. Vatican II, The Church in the Modern World, 74). As such, political authority has to be exercised within the limits of the moral order and directed towards the common good. Out of respect for all God’s children, the Church does not identify with nor is she to bound to any political party.

“Nevertheless, the Church is not indifferent or neutral to the formation and activities of the political community (cf. John XXIII, Mother and Teacher, 180).

“We urge our Catholic Lay Faithful, especially those with talents for the difficult yet noble art of politics or whose talents in this matter can be developed, to prepare themselves for it and, forgetting their convenience and material interests, to engage in political activity in pursuance of the common good and the establishment of the moral order (cf. Vatican II, The Church in the Modern World, 73). In other words, they are to accept as their divine vocation the task of sanctifying the world like leaven from within (cf. Vatican II, Apostolate of the Laity, 2 and 7; John Paul II, Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful, 16).

“While working to promote political activities and good governance that guarantee the dignity of the human person, justice and equity in society, priests have the duty to guide the Lay Faithful. In doing this, without prejudice to their rights to exercise their franchise, priests are not to use the pulpit to promote any particular political party or its candidates.

    A CALL FOR CIVIC EDUCATION
“As we thank God for considerable growth in political consciousness in Nigeria, we recognise that such consciousness needs guidance through political education so that all citizens, in general and young people, in particular, will be able to effectively play their part in political affairs (cf. Vatican II, The Church in the Modern World, 74).

“We call on all our citizens and institutions to work towards responsible political behaviour and informed choices. In consonance with the principles of the Social Teaching of the Church, our people should be made aware of the duty to be both good leaders and followers. All citizens need to know, right from childhood, that they are stakeholders in the political affairs of their country; that they are actors and not mere spectators.

“Only when the people are enlightened to take cognisance of their duties to the nation and their rights in it can they escape the servitude of political manipulation and ignorance in their electoral habits.

POLITICS AND THE GENERAL ELECTIONS 2023

“The 2023 General Elections are fast approaching. We commend the National Assembly and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for enacting and signing into law the Electoral Bill 2022. We acknowledge the President’s commitment to ensuring a level playing ground for all candidates in the elections. Furthermore, we commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its innovations, especially in the area of technology, to ensure free, fair and credible elections.

” We, however, enjoin the Commission to ensure that this technology is transparently deployed, in order to increase the confidence of the people in the electoral process.

“Politics is a noble vocation. We, therefore, encourage all politicians to uphold the values of integrity and decency. We strongly condemn as unlawful and sinful all forms of vote selling and buying and advise all politicians and voters to refrain from doing so.

It is through the right political choices that our current situation can be ameliorated.

    SOME CHALLENGES FACING THE NATION
    i) Continued and Heightened Insecurity in our Country

“We continue to decry the worsening state of insecurity in our nation as well as activities of terrorists and insurgents, kidnappers and bandits.

All these have led to an incessant loss of lives and destruction of property of innocent people.

While we continue to call on civil authorities to stand up to their constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians, we enjoin all to strengthen security measures in their homes and institutions. We call on all citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant, and to shun all forms of violence and criminality.

    ii)Nigeria’s Poor Economy
Owing to mismanagement and a failing economy with an ever increasing debt burden, there is poverty and hunger in our land, in spite of our huge human and natural resources. Spiralling inflation, high costs of goods and services, soaring unemployment, crude oil theft and non-functioning refineries have inflicted untold hardship on the citizens. Furthermore, governments have resorted to unnecessary borrowing, jeopardising the well-being of the present and future generations. Furthermore, this poor state of our economy has led to the mass migration of our human capital, especially professional and skilled labourers, fleeing the nation in search of greener pastures. In light of the above, we urge governments to make adequate policies and provide the enabling environment for the creation of more jobs by both the government and the private sector. This would surely reduce the level of poverty, insecurity and unrest in our land.

iii) ASUU Strike and Education in our Nation

The protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since 14 February 2022 is unacceptable. ASUU has cited the non-implementation of agreements by the Federal Government as the cause. We know that efforts have been made to resolve the matter. However, we believe that a resort to courts may not be the best and fastest way to solve the problem. Therefore, we renew our call on the Federal Government and ASUU to find a quicker and better way of resolving the matters under contention so that public universities will re-open.

    EVENTS IN THE CHURCH
We thank the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for calling the Synod on Synodality, which began in October 2021 at the diocesan level and is scheduled to end in October 2023 in Rome. The Synod is meant to be a journey of sharing, reflecting and listening to one another at all levels in the Church: parish, diocesan, provincial, national, continental, and universal. We expect that the fruits of the Synod will most certainly contribute also to building a better political community, where consensus building, listening to the needs of one another and sharing resources equitably among the different strata of the society find a place.

We are grateful to God for the successful hosting of the Reunion of the Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA) Assembly in Nigeria (3 – 8 May 2022) and felicitate with its new president His Excellency Alexis Touably Youlo of Ivory Coast. Also, we congratulate the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) for successfully holding its Assembly in Accra, Ghana (25 July – 1 August 2022), and we thank God for its new president, His Eminence Richard Cardinal Baawobr, Bishop of Wa Diocese in Ghana. We prayerfully wish him a full and speedy recovery.

For and on behalf of the Christian faithful in Nigeria, we are grateful to Pope Francis for creating another Cardinal from among us, His Eminence, Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpaleke, Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese. While we pray for our new Cardinal, we continue to pledge our loyalty to the Holy Father and seek better ways to deepen our commitment to the task of evangelisation of the peoples.

We thank Most Rev. Augustine Tochukwu Ukwuoma and the entire Christ’s Faithful of Orlu Diocese for their hospitality and kind hosting of the Second Plenary Assembly this year, 2022. Since our last Plenary Meeting in Abuja in March 2022, we have had the retirement of Bishop John Afareha of Warri Diocese (18 April 2022) and the appointment of Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze as the Apostolic Administrator of Warri Diocese; the installation of Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri (23 June 2022) and the retirement of Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna as Archbishop of Owerri after 29 years of dynamic leadership to the Archdiocese. We also had the erection of Kontagora Diocese and the installation of Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna as its first Bishop (16 June 2022); the episcopal ordination and installation of Most Rev. Isaac Dugu as the Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese and Most Rev. John Bakeni as the Auxiliary Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese on 1 July 2022 and 7 July 2022 respectively. We congratulate Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong on his assumption of office as the Diocesan Administrator of Umuahia on 24 June 2022. We continue to pray for the eternal repose of our venerable brother, Most Rev. George Dodo, Bishop of Zaria Diocese, whose death occurred on 8 July 2022. He was buried on 4 August 2022. We are grateful to God for the election of Rev. Fr. Michael Pius Kagarko, who assumed office as the Diocesan Administrator of Zaria on 9 July 2022.

CONCLUSION: A CALL TO SOBER REFLECTION, SELF RESTRAINT AND PRAYER
No doubt, we stand at a crossroads. How we conduct ourselves during this period is crucial to the survival of our nation. Let us turn our attention to God in prayer and fasting for our nation to get it right. We call on our citizens to continue fasting and prayer to prepare for smooth and peaceful elections. In campaigning and canvassing for votes, we urge politicians to eschew the politics of bitterness, divisiveness and religious bigotry. If we succeed in doing these things, we shall indeed cross the threshold into a new dawn in our country.

We commend our nation into the hands of God as we move ahead in faith, hope and trust. Indeed, the Lord of hosts is with us, and the God of Jacob is our stronghold (Ps. 46:7). May our Mother Mary, Queen and Patroness of Nigeria, continue to intercede for us. AMEN.

2023: Come out clean on fuel subsidy removal, APC tasks leaders of LP

… insists there’s no confluence between Obi and LP leaders

The All Progressives Congress, APC has asked leaders of Labour Party to come out clean on the issue of fuel subsidy removal as there seems to be lack of confluence with its Presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s position on the issue.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement issued and signed by the party’s spokesperson, Festus Keyamo, SAN demanding questions begging for answers concerning the discordant tones in LP over fuel subsidy removal.

The statement entitled: ‘The Leadership Of The Nigeria Labour Congress And Other Left-wing Supporters Of The Labour Party Should Come Clean On Their Stand On Peter Obi’s Vow To Remove Fuel Subsidy If Elected’ , the stated that:

“We note that the leadership of the organized labour under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday, September 13, 2022, at a national retreat of the Labour Party in Abuja, promised to mobilise its members across the 774 local government areas in Nigeria to ensure victory for Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in next year’s presidential election.

“We also note that in several interviews he granted in the last few months and weeks, Mr. Peter Obi has vowed to totally remove subsidy on petrol if elected President. We also note NLC’s long-standing opposition to total removal of fuel subsidy. Other left-leaning supporters of the Labour Party were also present at the event to cheer Mr. Peter Obi.

“Consequently, the following questions are urgently begging for answers by the leadership of the NLC:

” Before adopting Mr. Peter Obi as its candidate, did the leadership of the NLC have a discussion with him on the issue of removal of fuel subsidy?

” If they did have that discussion, did Mr. Peter Obi agree to back down on the issue of subsidy removal? Was that a basis for supporting him? If he did not back down on the issue, did organised Labour agree with him?

” If no such discussion held, does it mean the leadership of the NLC now fully supports the removal of fuel subsidy? Or will that not be reckless of the NLC to adopt a candidate without thoroughly interrogating the candidate on his policies as they affect the Nigerian workers or the masses? The NLC must make a public statement and come clean on this.

“If the excuse is that Mr. Peter Obi has said that the money saved will be used in other critical areas of the economy, how is that different from what the Buhari’s Government is also saying?

“These questions have become necessary because Nigerians deserve to know whether organised Labour’s adopted party, which is the Labour Party, supports and promotes a policy that the leadership of Labour opposes in another breath when it is adopted by the government of the day. They cannot be blowing hot and cold.

“As our Council stands for issue-based campaigns, we call on all members of the 4th Estate of the Realm not to sweep this point under the carpet and to thoroughly interrogate the NLC and the Labour Party on the one hand; and the seemingly right-leaning supporters of the Labour Party and Mr. Peter Obi on the other, on this issue so that they will come clean before Nigerians.

2023: Obi Support Network decries Gov Okowa’s resort to gangsterism

…as hoodlums disrupt group’s free medical outreach to nigerians in Delta State

The Obi Support Network has condemned the act of gangsterism allegedly perpetuated by the PDP led Government in Delta State as hoodlums truncated a well organized medical outreach program to twelve states in two geo-political zones.

The high expectations and enthusiasm with which citizens of the eleven(11)states of the South East and South South trooped out to Asaba, the Delta State capital, to benefit from the widely publicized free medical outreach by the Diasporan Medics For Good Governance in conjunction with Doctors 4 Peter Obi in Ogbonologo market in Asaba, was truncated by some political thugs, early afternoon Friday today.

According to a press statement by the Peter Obi Support Network, signed by Onwuasoanya FCC Jones who is the
Director, Strategic Communication “…we regretfully wish to alert Nigerians to the irresponsible resort to hooliganism by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as he sent his thugs to disrupt a free medical outreach organised by Diasporan Medics For Good Governance in conjunction with Doctors 4 Peter Obi in Ogbonologo market in Asaba, Delta State.

“Governor Okowa who is also the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic Party reportedly sent a group of thugs led by the Chairman of Oshimili South LGA of the State, Mr. Kelvin Obi Ezenyili gave no valid reason for stopping hundreds of anxious citizens, who are victims of Okowa’s poor governance from accessing a free medical intervention organised by responsible professionals whose only aim is to meet the medical needs of these Deltans and other citizens.”

The Network regretted that, “instead of showing gratitude to these selfless medical professionals who tasked themselves to provide useful health interventions to the citizenry, Governor Okowa chose to exhibit reckless wickedness by disrupting the exercise.

“We understand that Okowa’s action is a reflection of his Party’s electoral insecurity and a demonstration of their frustration with their clear and loud rejection by all classes of Nigerians who have made no pretentions about their preference for the Labour Party and her presidential candidate, H/E Peter Obi, as the vehicle to birth good governance and rescue them from years of mindless dictatorship and reckless rape of their commonwealth, accentuated by an inexplicable dearth of public amenities and any semblance of good governance.”

The statement pointed out that “Governor Okowa must be advised that a resort to sheer hooliganism and deployment of unlawful force cannot stop the people’s resolve to take back their country and enthrone good governance across board.

” In line with the character and philosophy of Obi, the incoming President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in keeping with the guiding principle of the ObiDatti Campaign, members of Labour Party in Delta State, volunteers and our supporters from across different political leanings have restrained themselves from responding in kind to Okowa’s thugs as they conducted themselves in the most responsible manner, even in the face of unwarranted provocations by PDP’s thugs.

“We enjoin all our members, especially, delegates attending the Southeast/SouthSouth Summit for Peter Obi, to continue to conduct themselves well and to use the provided channels to inform us, promptly, of any threat or acts of intimidation from any quarters.”

2023: Ignore Keyamo’s rants over alleged Peter Obi’s self assassination plot-Aide

Valentine Obienyem, an aide to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has advised Nigerians to discard comments made by the spokesperson of APC, Festus Keyamo, SAN claiming the party’s flag bearer is hatching a self assassination plot.

TheNewsGuru com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement issued by Obi’s aide, Valentine Obienyem.

    Hear him:

“The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, and by the grace of God, fueled by his merit, the next President of Nigeria, Mr. Peter Obi, is back to the country. In the last three weeks, he transversed the world, convincing Nigerians on the need to take back their country and move in sync with the rest of the world.

“Kindly ignore the falsehood making the rounds that he was attacked. May God forbid that even the very thought of such barbarism be visited on him.

“Obi has consistently reiterated his belief that politics should always be devoid of violence. This remains his political credo.

“It is pertinent to note that the news, coming shortly after Barr. Festus Keyamo’s press release, alleging plan by Obi to stage manage his own assassination is worrisome. It shows that the devil may be at work in endless and familiar scheming. We shall continue to entrust Mr. Peter Obi into the protection of the Almighty, while he ensures he is adequately protected to see through the work of re-building Nigeria that providence has entrusted unto him.

  • PDP alleges Gombe gov, Inuwa is recruiting killer squad to unleash terror

PDP alleges Gombe gov, Inuwa is recruiting killer squad to unleash terror

…says demolition of Gombe PDP Campaign Office invitation to anarchy

…Insists APC must leave in 2023

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the APC Governor of Gombe Mohammed Inuwa is recruiting a killer squad to unleash terror in the 2023 guber election.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement issued by Debo Ologunagba National Publicity Secretary condemning in the strongest terms the unprovoked invasion and demolition of PDP’s campaign office in Gombe, Gombe State capital by the jittery and outgoing All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration in the State.

The PDP scribe noted that: “This cowardly and provocative action by the Governor Mohammad Inuwa Yahaya-led failed APC administration in Gombe State is a call for anarchy and a vicious attack on the generality of the people of the State, whose Will, aspiration and resolve for good governance is symbolized and embodied in the PDP as a Party.

“The PDP, without any equivocation, demands that the Gombe State Government should immediately rebuild the demolished Campaign Office and tender unreserved apology to the people of Gombe State.

“Governor Inuwa Yahaya is in mortal fear of the PDP Gombe State Campaign office which has become the rallying point of the people in the determination to liberate their State from the misrule and stranglehold of the APC administration.

“Nigerians were shocked by the display of hatred, violence and brute force by the Inuwa Yahaya-led APC administration in Gombe State, which also enlisted heavily armed police operatives, who reportedly fired tear gas and live shots at innocent citizens to assist the demolition squad to carry out its dastardly act.

“This failed governor is discomfited because the APC in Gombe State has fallen apart in the face of mass exodus of prominent APC members arising from his abysmal failure in office for which the people of the State have rejected him and the APC.

“It is inexcusable that being flustered by rejection and inevitable electoral defeat in 2023 given the soaring popularity of PDP’s Governorship Candidate, Jibrin Barde, the failed Gombe State Governor has resorted to inflicting violence on the people of Gombe State.

“Governor Inuwa Yahaya is aware that he is no match to PDP’s Jibrin Barde and as such he is now seeking to foist a fascist regime as a way to forcefully perpetuate himself in office beyond May 29, 2023.

“The PDP alerts that Governor Inuwa Yahaya has become a clear and present danger to national security as well as a huge threat to our democratic process and corporate existence as a nation.

“This is particularly as there are apprehensions in the public space that the Governor Inuwa Yahaya-led APC is setting up killer squads to unleash terror on the people ahead of the elections.

“Our Party cautions Inuwa Yahaya to note that he has been exposed and would be held responsible for any breakdown of Law and Order as well as any terrorist attack in Gombe State ahead of the elections.

“The PDP therefore invites President Muhammadu Buhari to call Governor Inuwa Yahaya to order before he causes another mayhem in Gombe State.

“We also charge the Inspector General of Police to order an investigation into the use of police operatives to attack the people of Gombe State to facilitate the demolition of the Campaign Office.

“Governor Inuwa Yahaya should accept the reality of his rejection. He must know that he can never intimidate or cow the people of Gombe State to submission with his resort to violence.

“The people have made up their mind that he must leave office in May 29, 2023 and there is no going back on that resolve.

Enugu Workers, Pensioners will enjoy under Labour Party, says Media Office

…ask all workers to Rrise and claim their mandate

Labour Party has said that workers and pensioners in Enugu State will enjoy immediate and just reward for their work by ensuring that they are paid their wages as and when due.

The party also reaffirmed that the era where retired workers and senior citizens, many of whom are being owed their retirement benefits since 2007 by successive administratios of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were denied their pensions and gratuities will come to an end as they will be given priority attention.

This was made known by the Chijioke Edeoga Media Office while highlighting some of the key objectives of the administration if voted into power, come 2023.

The party stressed that the 24 years of PDP in Enugu State is riddled with bad governance, wastage of public funds in policies and programmes which are self-serving, as well as electoral fraud, land grabbing, imposition of leaders from councillors to local government chairmen, legislative offices, among others.

“The Labour Party, as the people’s party, will allow communities and wards to select their leaders. We will go back to the good old days when people will be chosen by their communities or wards to represent them as councillors or members of the state or federal legislature because of their good deeds.

“The Labour Party in Enugu State will not write the names of would be councillors or members of the state House of Assembly and push such names down to the electorate as has been the case in the last 24 years. The communities or wards or constituents will be given free hands to elect their leaders or representatives. The selection will be from bottom to the top and not from top to bottom,” it stated.

The media office insisted that Labour Party will not neglect primary school teachers or local government workers, adding: “We will not discriminate against primary school teachers of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE. We will not tell them that they are not core civil servants, because we know they are and we are all partners in progress. There will be no room for discrimination against workers and non- workers. Every labourer deserves his wage.”

The party reiterated that primary school teachers and NULGE members are the main engine room in the development of any state “and Enugu State will not and can never be an exception. We shall treat everyone equal because we are equal before the law. The professor, the governor, the president, the senator or member of the House of Assembly or Representatives is taught first of all by the kindergarten or primary school teacher.”

It called on all workers who feel aggrieved to be hopeful of a better dawn, and enjoined all to work towards electing Labour Party into government at all levels in 2023. It said: “Let us be Obedient supporters of Peter Obi, Chijioke Jonathan Edeoga and all other LP candidates. A new dawn is coming.”
