TNG Analysis: How entry of North West into HoR speakership race upsets political permutations

…as Reps patiently wait for APC zoning formula

The House of Representatives race for speakership has taken a new dimension as the North West geo-political zone shows keen interest on who becomes the next number four citizen in Nigeria.

In this analysis, TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) will take a look at the various zones and their candidates gunning for Femi Gbajabiamila’s job.

It’s simply the rule of first among equals in the parliament as lawmakers jostle, lobby colleagues on who picks the coveted job in the most vibrant Green Chamber in Africa.

In the pack so far are the outgoing deputy speaker, Idris Wase from the North Central geo-political zone, Benjamin Kalu from the South East and Tajudeen Abass from the North West, others are non-starters scavenging for ‘juicy’ committees.

Wase started the race before others as he has sign posted his billboards in all available corners of the National Assembly.

The entire north central in the last February presidential election did not really give APC strong support as even the home state of Wase fell flat to the opposition.

Hon Aliyu Betara is from the North East geo-political zone, the zone of the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shetima and same state of Borno. Number two and three coming from same state is a technical knock out.

This has put a spanner in the ambition of Betara who is the current Chairman of Reps Committee on Appropriation.

Betara is popular among his colleagues but his zone is now an albatross as the argument is that his state cannot produce both VP and Speaker.

Hon Benjamin Kalu is from the South East geo-political zone. His entire zone produced less than 173,000 votes into the presidential election tray for APC.

Give and take if his zone had performed in terms of delivering votes for the ruling party, his speakership could have at least fetched something for him in the body of principal officers.

In all these the North West is saying we gave the highest number of votes to the president, we can’t be onlookers in this game, we deserve something for all our efforts. Taking the speakership position will not be a bad idea.

Weighing all the available options, the North West went to the parliamentary market and got a candidate without any baggage or hangover of a blemished past.

They saw these qualities in Hon Tajudeen Abass, a P.hd holder, former lecturer, fourth timer in the House of Representatives, the man with the highest number of assented bills in the outgoing ninth Assembly.

An overwhelming record in the seventh, eighth and ninth assemblies showcasing rare intelligence and brilliance in legislative business as he recorded a high number of bills in the past three assemblies.

With the entry of Abass into the race, the political calculations of those eyeing Gbajabiamila’s job nose dived into an abyss of confusion.

Abass apart from being eminently qualified has a track record of performance as a silent worker treading cautiously without making noise.

His records are there for all to see and his zone has evidence to show to the entire world that they immensely contributed to the reemergence of the APC in 2023.

Those in other camps need to borrow stronger legs to remain in the race or as usual bury their ambition for good.

    WAITING FOR APC ZONING FORMULA:

The silence of APC on where the pendulum will swing to in the National Assembly has left lawmakers to have sleepless nights.

Nobody seems to understand the body language of the party in this direction and this is a dangerous signal that may further lead the House into a ‘Dugbe’ arrangement like in 2019. But at the end of the day political IOUs and realignments weeded all to just two contestants.

The over 13 contestants finally found their levels. APC silence for now on zoning formula is hyper dangerous.

TNG also recalls Michael Achimugu a former aide of the former VP had confessed using an audio alleging he had a conversation with him on how funds are diverted into an SPV account that cannot be traced.

In the letter of invitation as captured in the statement, “the Code of Conduct Bureau is set to commence investigation of Atiku Abubakar over the diversion of public funds whilst he was Vice-President of Nigeria through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV).

REVEALED! How PDP squandered N12.5bn in sixty days — Wike alleges

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, on Wednesday, alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s leadership squandered N12.5 billion party funds in sixty days.

Wike raised the allegation at the inauguration of internal roads in Rumuigbo, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

He stressed that PDP would regain its force of dominance with the new leadership.

The governor alleged that “I believe we should have strong leadership. I can’t support people whose interest is only to amass money.

“I can’t support people where we did congresses and raised about N12.5 billion and, within two months, that money was gone.

“Somebody stayed in office for one year and he is building an institution. I won’t support such

“That is why we believe PDP will be strengthened with the new leadership.

“I owe no apology to anybody. I said it before, this is the final fight we will fight and we are going to win this fight.”

Preempting the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) coming after him when his governorship ends, Wike bragged that the thought doesn’t scare him because there is nothing to hide as his numerous projects delivered were evidence of how accountable he deployed the state’s resources.

Inaugurating the project, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State commended Wike for achieving more projects for the Rivers people.

Bala attributed the feat not entirely too much money at the disposal of his Rivers counterpart but to his commitment to the common good of Rivers people.

Mohammed acknowledged the political sagacity Wike demonstrated in ensuring PDP won the governorship, all-state assembly and three senatorial seats in Rivers, and contributed significant votes for his preferred southern Presidential candidate.

…says transition program will be announced soon

Governor-elect of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has hailed all critical stakeholders in the state who made his victory possible during the guber polls as he gives God all the glory after receiving his Certificate of Return on Wednesday at INEC office in Asaba, Delta state.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in his remarks after receiving his CoR saying:

” In the final analysis, the glory belongs to God, maker of the heaven and and the earth, and from whom all power flows.

“In due course, the Government shall be unfolding a Transition Committee that will midwife my inauguration on May 29, 2023. Until then, I implore all Deltans and residents to remain prayerful, peaceful, and law abiding.

He also praised critical stakeholders such as the outgoing governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, the immediate past governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and others who stood by him before and after his victory.

    Read his full address below:

” I have just been presented with the Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arising from my emergence as the Governor-Elect of Delta State on March 20, 2023. With the issuance of the Certificate of Return, we must now turn our attention to ensuring a seamless and stable transition in pursuant of my Advancing Delta agenda.

“On a day like this, it is important that I acknowledge and thank all those who worked tirelessly to bring us to where we are today. First, I wish to, once again, appreciate the leader of our great party, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa under whose able and wise leadership the PDP in Delta State has remained strong and formidable. Our massive victory may have come to some as a surprise but not to us because we know Deltans are happy with the excellent performance of Governor Okowa.

“Our victory is a testament to this fact; it was as comprehensive as it was decisive; the PDP won in all the 17 Local Government Areas in the North and South senatorial districts. In the Delta Central senatorial district, we won in four out of the eight Local Government Areas. But even more significant was our victory in Ethiope East Local Government Area, which had eluded the PDP since the current democratic dispensation began in 1999.

“Let me also thank our former Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan for his exemplary courage and statesmanship. Dr Uduaghan was in the trenches with us; he went out of his way to reconcile aggrieved persons in order to ensure that the party was united going into this battle. Thank you, sir, for your leadership and commitment.

” I thank the Chairman of our party, Barrister Kingsley Esiso for his doggedness. I doff my hat to the elders/founding fathers of our party, all the members of the campaign council, party leaders at various levels, and the various support groups that stood solidly behind me.

“My gratitude also goes to civil servants, retirees, organized labour, youths, professionals, student groups, traditional rulers, religious leaders, artisans, market women, and all those who laboured in one way or the other for this victory.

“Thank you all for staying the course. I assure you that your labour shall not be in vain.

“Let me specially appreciate my wife, my Children and family members for their prayers, support, encouragement and steadfastness all through the electioneering process . May God bless for this show of love and care.

” In the final analysis, the glory belongs to God, maker of the heaven and the earth, and from whom all power flows.

“In due course, the Government shall be unfolding a Transition Committee that will midwife my inauguration on May 29, 2023. Until then, I implore all Deltans and residents to remain prayerful, peaceful, and law abiding.

“By God’s grace, we shall do MORE to ADVANCE Delta State.

Despite electoral cases, Buhari won’t spend one minute beyond May 29-FG

Despite electoral petitions filed by the presidential candidates of the opposition parties to challenge the results of the 2023 presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has promised not spend one minute beyond May 29 in office

Promised a smooth transition of power to the new administration to be led by ‘president-elect’, Bola Tinubu.

“On May 29th, there would be a peaceful formal transfer of power to the new President,” Boss Mustapha, chairman of the transition committee, has said.

The Independent Electoral Commission INEC which conducted the presidential election declared Tinubu the winner, having polled a total of 8,794,726 to defeat his closest rivals Peoples Democratic Party candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi.

Meanwhile, Atiku and Obi have filed petitions at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, to challenge the outcome of the poll.

However, Mustapha told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that the litigation would not prevent the handover ceremony from taking place.

  • (Opinion) 2023 Governorship Election Outcome: Why those mouthing going to Election Tribunal should not be taken seriously

(Opinion) 2023 Governorship Election Outcome: Why those mouthing going to Election Tribunal should not be taken seriously

    By Sylvester Imonina

Since the advent of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, Delta State had the freest and fairest gubernatorial election in the just concluded 2023 Gubernatorial election. As an opposition member and leader for twenty-two years in Delta State before now, I dare to say that the outcome of the 2023 Gubernatorial election in Delta State is a reflection of the wish of the majority of Deltans.

Though, every Candidate has the inalienable right to approach the election tribunal to ventilate his grievances against the outcome of an election, but when the said right is founded on nothing, it behooves on any right-thinking associates of the Candidate to deprecate such an unholy action.

Like I said earlier, as an opposition leader in Delta State up till January, 2022, I dare say that most of the election petitions of opposition parties were/are laced with ill motives. In other words, there are three categories of petitioners at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and they are:

    1) Those who know that they have no business going to the tribunal but because they needed something as a bargaining tool, they against all good legal reasoning and advice proceed to the tribunal. Their interest is, “man must get something make he for nor die”.

    2) The second set of Candidates are those I tag as bad losers who do not want their followers to know that they have no case against the winner of an election. Because they have the intention of contesting future elections, they go to the election petition tribunal in order to keep the hope of their followers alive. These set of candidates proliferate cases in courts and Election Petition Tribunals with the sole aim of making those cases unending till the next election circle. These set of candidates do not care about the well-being of their followers but are only interested in keeping them in political bondage.

    3) The third set of candidates are those who have little or no reasonable evidence that can ground what they want at the tribunal. They know that what gives them such seeming hope cannot crystalize into reality. They are candidates who feel that if the little evidence with them is not used to file a petition at the tribunal, their followers will accuse them of having collected monies (isiagware) from the winner of the election. In order not to be accused of collecting monies, they go to Court for the purpose of massaging their bruised egos.

The crux of this write-up is thus: can it be said that the outcome of the gubernatorial elections held about two weeks ago is not a true reflection of what the majority of Deltans desire? Will it not be unfair to say that BVAS did not to a large extent give Deltans what they expected?

I dare to say that, unlike previous elections, the 2023 Gubernatorial results in Delta State is nothing but a true reflection of what Deltans want. Also, the BVAS helped in limiting election manipulations. “Mammy water” who used to generate “Sokoto” votes was handicapped this time around. Though, most Deltans are of the belief that “a land goddess” generated some controversial votes from Orogun and Oghara axis. While some of those results were canceled, a blind eye was given to some of the votes collated as valid votes, especially the ones from the Orogun axis.

Gullible Deltans should as a matter of fact open their eyes and see through the intentions of those thinking of going to the Election Petition Tribunal. Their intentions are not genuine. We should be wary of them.

There is no gainsaying the fact that the majority of Deltans voted for PDP and its Governorship Candidate in the last election. Deltans should defend the mandate freely given to Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, the Governor-elect in Delta State.

Deltans, particularly the followership in the opposition should put on their thinking cap; they should not allow anyone to use them. I was once there and I know what most opposition candidates do in periods like this. Do not put your hopes in them.

2023 elections: Five CSOs condemn political rascality being exhibited by those against Tinubu’s mandate

… describe last presidential election as most peaceful in Nig

Five Civil Society Organizations, CSOs have condemned the political rascality being exhibited by those against the mandate of APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement co-jointly signed by the conveners of the coalition on Monday namely: Razaq Olokoba

    Campaign for Dignity in Governance
    Nelson Ekujumi Co-Convener
Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate Titi Akosa
    Co-Convener
Center for 21st Century Issues Raji Rasheed Oyewumi
Co-Convener Movement for Democratic Change Alex Omotehinse
Co-Convener Center for Human and Socio-economic Rights.

The coalition quoting statistics of various elections held in Nigeria since 1964 described the 2023 presidential election as the most peaceful and that wailers should stop condemning it.

They declared that:”Due to this, we as democrats, can no longer fold our arms and do nothing as responsible stakeholders in the Nigerian project.

“For the purpose of emphasis, what the country has been passing through since the 2023 general elections is nothing more than political rascality, irresponsibility, crudity, recklessness, insensitivity and treasonable acts which threaten our nation’s democracy and national security.

    Read full text below:

“We want to start by passing our warmest regards and salute to NIGERIANs for their commitment to the unity of Nigeria by coming out to express their democratic right in the just concluded general elections, we also commend all the institutions that took active part in the exercise which includes INEC, all the Security agencies, EFCC, Members of the Fourth Estate/the Media and the accredited local and international observers.

Enough of Political Rascality Over 2023 General Elections

“We in the civil society community have watched recent events in the nation’s body polity with keen interest. We have observed this negative trend since the end of the recently held 2023 General Elections notwithstanding the inconclusiveness of two states gubernatorial elections, with deep feeling of anger and disbelief regarding the effect that the country seems to be moving away from the path of sanity and civility to a steady descent to anarchy and chaos.

“Due to this, we as democrats, can no longer fold our arms and do nothing as responsible stakeholders in the Nigerian project.

“For the purpose of emphasis, what the country has been passing through since the 2023 general elections is nothing more than political rascality, irresponsibility, crudity, recklessness, insensitivity and treasonable acts which threaten our nation’s democracy and national security.

“As you all know, we have been active players in Nigeria’s political life since the days of military despotism in the 80’s and 90’s.

“We have even been very active since our tertiary education days as young adults till now and our roles in the civil society movement are very much well known and documented.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our series of advocacy have brought us to follow in the footsteps of leading lights in the civil society movement such as the likes of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Beko Ransome Kuti, Anthony Enahoro, Baba Omojola, Alfred Ilenre, Chima Ubani, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Cmdr. Dan Suleiman, Alao Aka Bashorun, Hajiya Gambo Sawaba, Ola Oni, Arthur Nwankwo, Prof Jadesola Akande, Alhaja Raliat Daniju, all of blessed memory.

“We are also glad that some of the shinning lights such as Chief Ayo Opadokun, Prof Wole Soyinka, Dr. Keziah Awosika, Fred Agbeyegbe, Ayo Obe, Titi Akosa, Prof Femi Obayori, Biodun Aremu etc are still alive but remain sad that the country of our dreams that was hoped and laboured for, is still far away from the proverbial Eldorado.

“It is to the credit of these patriots and many more persons of like minds and interest, that they were able to galvanize the society for good governance and democracy in their lifetime and thus played critical roles in terminating military dictatorship in Nigeria. Their heroic stance and actions are well acknowledged and receipted by history.

“Collectively with these giants, we sacrificed sweat, limbs and lives of the Nigerian people at great costs to birth this democracy in 1999 and we will not fold our arms and watch it derided, demarketed, maligned, discredited and truncated by elements that lack democratic ethos and credentials.

“We refer to characters who lack proper understanding of democracy and its values and are not ready to learn, have obstinately refused to imbibe the tenets of democracy which is about the will of the majority over the minority as expressed by all Nigerians who came out to vote at the polls.

“Following the fair, successful and credible conduct of the 2023 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), whom we commend for the marvelous work it has done despite all the landmines laid in its path, we have watched with bated breadth and shock, how some characters are plotting to truncate our hard earned democracy at all costs through treasonable and subversive calls for the installation of an interim government.

“These unpatriotic elements have resorted to fake news, hate speech, lies, falsehood, misinformation and campaign of blackmail and calumny against all known national institutions with a view to arm twisting and blackmailing them to toe their ignoble and undemocratic line.

“Wickedly of them, their sinister and unpatriotic actions have caused threats to the lives of Nigerians because their party and candidate lost an election.

“If we all recall, while INEC was busy with the collation of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections results, two bitter and sore losers presidential candidates and members of their political parties having seen the handwriting of defeat on the wall via their manually collated party agents results from the polling units, to the wards, local government levels and state collation centres, started calling for the cancellation of the presidential election midway citing irregularity of non uploading of the results to the IRev by INEC and sadly, this irresponsible, insensitive, reckless, provocative and treasonable call was echoed by a former President of Nigeria whose place is cemented in our political history as the progenitor of do or die politics, who supervised the most scandalous elections in our national life.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we want it placed on record, that we condemn in totality the pockets of violence, voters intimidation and harassment which occurred in some polling stations during the elections and we demand that the security agencies investigate and take appropriate action to remedy these infractions that have become a recurring decimal across the country at every election cycle.

“However, we reject in strong terms the attempt to taint the credibility of the 2023 general elections by anti democratic elements who have taken their campaign of calumny against the successful and credible conduct of the elections to a ridiculous height by describing it as the worst in Nigeria’s history, that it was marred by electoral violence and voters suppression which is at variance with the facts on the ground.

“According to a report published by socioeconomic research firm SBM, voters intimidation, harassment and assault were only reported in 5% of the polling stations nationwide. This figures reflect a downward trend of violence. The 2023 general elections was the least violent in Nigeria’s election history and the data of election history below will validate our position.

    Elections Years/deaths
    1964/65 – 200
    1993 – 100
    1999 – 80
    2003 – 100
    2007 – 300
    2011 – 800
    2015 – 100
    2019 – 150
    2023 – 13-28

“From the report, we can confirm that 13 persons were killed in 36 incidents across Nigeria, but this figure could go as high as 28 if we consider some media reports of deaths which is subject to verification.

“Thus, like we say, data don’t lie, so how can any responsible person be engaged in lies, falsehood and blackmail of the 2023 general elections in the face of obvious facts that it’s violence rate shows a steady decline unlike in previous elections?

“It is a well known fact that Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy in which the process for the installation of a government has been prescribed as through universal suffrage (election) by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“The same Constitution also provides room for aggrieved parties to seek redress for any perceived infraction through the Election Petitions Tribunal and the Courts.

“Nowhere in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), is it stipulated that when an election) is conducted and results declared, that the aggrieved parties, candidates and supporters can resort to street protests, threats of violence, call for cancellation of election or installation of an interim government.

“The Constitution does not permit for aggrieved candidate(s) or party to engage in peddling of fake news, hate speech, lies, falsehood, misinformation, incitements, campaign of blackmail, intimidation and calumny against the state through threats of breakdown of law and order.

“Any party, candidate or its agents resorting to the above mentioned anti- democratic acts and threats to national security under our laws, is liable for treason and we urge the government to activate all its law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to prevent this ticking bomb that threaten our collective peaceful co-existence.

“We are shocked and amused that while going to court to challenge the outcome of the presidential election which was conducted successfully and creditably by INEC in which they lost, same aggrieved candidates and their party are in the same breadth hypocritically applauding and commending the conduct of national and state houses of assembly and governorship elections by same INEC in which they won, these political parties, its candidates and agents have been making provocative, irresponsible, insensitive, reckless, undemocratic and subversive statements against democracy and national security through interviews, comments, sponsored rallies which is condemnable and unacceptable.

“We also condemn in strong terms, the subversive and unGodly sermons from anti democratic elements accomplices on the pulpit who have desecrated the altar of God for political expediency.

“Everyday, the sensibilities of Nigerians are assaulted and traumatized by the so called men of God denigrating the Lord’s temple for filthy political lucre which is very sad, unfortunate, reprehensible and despicable.

“We however want to use this opportunity to admonish these agents of destabilization, that as Nigerians who went to the polls peacefully and orderly to exercise our franchise on election day and even observe the elections, we will no longer fold our arms and watch them discredit and undermine our democracy and national security for their selfish end.

“We state that as organizations which observed the 2023 general elections under our umbrella body, we affirm that the elections were conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the electoral Act 2022 and the outcome reflected the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

“The treasonable comments and conducts being exhibited over an election that was creditably conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act, which they lost is becoming embarrassing and unbearable.

“The silence of the majority of Nigerians who voted for the President-elect and other candidates who won at the polls, must not be mistaken for cowardice, enough is enough!

“We commend the media for the professionalism and objectivity exhibited before, during and after the elections and appeal to them to continue to uphold the ethics of the profession just as we charge them to educate and sensitize innocent and peace loving Nigerians on the tenets of democracy which is being daily debased, abused and assaulted by these anti democratic elements just to confuse and incite the people for selfish end, enough is enough!

“Finally, we commend our hardworking and tireless security and anti graft agencies for their professionalism, impartiality and dedication to duty which contributed in no small measure to the success and credibility of the elections and particularly urge the security agencies to rein in these anti democratic elements to face the law for subversion and treason where it is established after investigation.

Enough is Enough of political rascality over the 2023 general elections.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

PDP unending crisis: Court restrains Ayu from parading himself as PDP chairman until…

A High Court in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, has restrained embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu from parading himself as chairman of the party pending the determination of the substantive suit which has been adjourned to April 17, 2023 for hearing.

member of the PDP from Benue, Terhide Utaan, who is the plaintiff before Justice W. I Kpochi, obtained the order restraining Ayu from parading himself as national chairman of the party.

Addressing journalists in Makurdi after obtaining the court order, the plaintiff said following the suspension of Ayu by his Igyorov Ward Exco on Sunday, it is wrong for him to keep up with the office of national chairman and further disunite the party.

Ayu was suspended late last week for anti-party activities in the wake of the party’s loss in the presidential election.

But in a Monday statement by his media aide Simon Imobo-Tswam, the former lawmaker argued that the ward lacked the powers to suspend him.
