EFCC operatives brutalised by alleged vote buyers in Kaduna

Raw deal for operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on election monitoring duty in Kaduna State Saturday as they came under heavy attack at School Road, Unguwan Rimi Kaduna while attempting to arrest a suspected vote buyer.

The team, working on intelligence on the alleged activities of one Kabiru Musa who was seen in an amateur video allegedly inducing eligible voters by using his phone to transfer money into their accounts as they cast their votes, had mobilized to the scene to arrest the suspect.

However, immediately he was accosted by the operatives, Musa became unruly and screamed to attract the attention of his syndicate members, who descended on the operatives, using all manner of weapons that left some of them injured.

It took great restraints for the operatives to ignore the unprovoked attack but insisted on arresting the suspect.

As the team drove away with the suspect, their vehicle was pelted with stones and other dangerous objects that damaged the windshield and three operatives suffered varying degrees of injuries in the process.

The injured operatives are currently receiving medical attention at the Medical Centre of the Kaduna Zonal Command, while the suspect is in custody, pending conclusion of the investigation.

Recall that EFCC teams were similarly attacked during the presidential and national assembly elections, leaving some of its vehicles badly damaged.

Reacting to the incident, Executive Chairman of the Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa commended the operatives for exercising great restraint under extreme provocation. He however appealed to the public to desist from attacking officers of the Commission as such action would no longer be tolerated.

Most polling units in Calabar, Cross River State have experienced low turnout of voters, and vote buying in the on going Guber and State Assembly elections in Cross River State.

At ward one, units 001-005 in Akim town, Calabar Municipality, the INEC members of staff and the security personnel were sighted at the various polling units at 7:50am, despite the near absence of prospective voters.

However, few minutes after casting his vote at the same unit at 9am, the polling unit and other adjoining units, according to our correspondent, started recording slight increase in the number of potential voters.

It was also observed that some party agents in other areas including Ward 7, unit 5, Ikot Ishie, also in Calabar Municipality, were tactically engaging most voters, promising to reward them for casting their votes for the respective parties.

The situation was not different in Ward 4, unit 15, State Housing Estate in Calabar Municipality.

The INEC workers, who came out early for the exercise, were greeted with low turnout of voters.

One of the electorates, a 26 -year- old Patricia Ekpo said the general Voters’ apary could be related to the outcome of the Presidential election which she said was a stolen mandate of the people.

She added, ” Today’s exercise is orderly and peaceful no doubt, but the whole essence is about the trust in the system that matters most.”

At ward 7, unit 5, the level of voter aparthy was quite high compared to the last general elections held in the same area.

An observer in the unit, Mr. Okon Ete, attributed the situation to the outcome of the last elections.

” We are not surprised to see the turn out of voters in today’s election, but we have hope that our party will win. Most of our supporters are not happy with the results of the last elections, and so they refused to come out”, he said.

Also speaking, the PDP agent in Polling unit 012, ward 6, Pst. Dominic Etim, said “today’s turnout is not really encouraging compared to the Presidential election. People are aggrieved, they feel their votes were not counted in the previous exercise and still believe their vote will not be counted this time around.”

Delta: PDP raises alarm, alleges APC has cloned result sheets ready for distribution to collation centres

…places PDP agents on standby to forestall such moves

The Delta State PDP has raised an alarm alleging that the APC in Delta State has cloned result sheets that will soon be smuggled into collation centres across the state.

It was also noted that the APC is already affixing results on the INEC cloned sheets to be smuggled into collation centres.

    Ifeanyi Osuoza, Media & Publicity,
Delta PDP Campaign Council/ State Publicity Secretary raised the alarm in a statement he personally signed on Saturday stating that:

“We have received impeccable intelligence that the Delta State All Progressives Congress, APC is in possession of already cloned result sheets and are presently affixing results and numbers into columns, with the intention of smuggling these already prepared result sheets into various Collation Centres, with full support and assistance of compromised, conniving INEC staff, who are willing and ready to carry out this dirty, damaging assignment to sabotage the Governorship and State House of Assembly election, March 18, 2023.

“We are therefore calling on all Party Agents at the various polling units, to be on high alert and be extra vigilant of any strange movements and suspicious exchanges of documents, to ensure that only the authentic votes cast and proper ballot papers used for the election are counted at each polling unit and the results and numbers declared are the same, accurately imputed and affixed into the result sheets, which must be blank and displayed to the voters for confirmation, before results are imputed.

“We want to also place it on record that we are fully aware of this dirty plot by the APC in concert with compromised electoral officials, to manipulate the results of the election and we are, by this Press Release, putting INEC and all security agencies involved and connected with the election on notice, that they should prevent where necessary or desist forthwith, from engaging or encouraging any nefarious acts that are very capable of causing a major eruption of widespread violence and massive disruptions, once people realise that the right thing has not been done and their votes will not count.

A word is enough for the wise.
