Hoodlums hijack, burn election materials in Bayelsa

Hoodlums have hijacked and burnt election materials for three wards in Ogbia Constituency 2 in Bayelsa State during the ongoing state assembly poll in the state.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deployed to the constituency are already moving back to Yenagoa for safety, as the hoodlums are on the rampage in the area.

It was gathered that the supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are scrambling for the Assembly seat in the area, and both parties are also struggling to form majority in the next state Assembly in Bayelsa State ahead of the November 11, governorship election in the state.

INEC’s Head Voter Education and Publicity in Bayelsa State, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, who confirmed the development said the commission will issue a statement to that effect later.

He said: “We received a report that materials meant for the State Assembly election in about two or three wards in Ogbia Constituency 2 were hijacked and burnt, maybe later we will get a statement on it.”

At the time of filing this report, it appears there will be no election in Ogbia Constituency 2, as INEC officials are already heading back to Yenagoa.

  • (ANALYSIS) Delta: Will opposition end PDP’s over two decades reign as Oborevwori, Omo-Agege, Pela, others slug it out today

(ANALYSIS) Delta: Will opposition end PDP’s over two decades reign as Oborevwori, Omo-Agege, Pela, others slug it out today

Delta state is unarguably the heart beat of the nation and since 1999 the PDP has remained unshakeable, winning one election after the other at the same time holding the equilibrium constant.

All these years, the PDP held sway in Delta state and at no time allowed little errors that could jeopardize its continued success go into oblivion.

In this analysis, TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) will take a swipe at some of these factors and the standings of the gladiators aiming to take Senator Ifeanyi Okowa’s plum job.

The major factor that may affect the ruling PDP in Delta State is the internal wranglings before the guber primaries and after Hon Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori emerged the party’s standard flag bearer.

But in this clime, just one hour is enough to turn the table around in favour of the state’s ruling party.

The emergence of DSP Ovie Omo-Agege the flag bearer of the ruling APC at the centre too is a major factor that could affect PDP victory considering the fact that having an oil rich state like Delta has been the life long ambition of the party.

If the PDP had kept its house in order before now, the APC would have been properly checkmated.

Politics is a game of numbers and this the PDP has in its fold as its structure is still iron cast at the grassroots.

In terms of campaigns, the PDP is well above other major contestants in all segments going deep into the creeks of Delta to register its formidable dominance since 1999.

Give and take, the PDP has what it takes to return to government house Asaba come May 29th but needs to properly oil all critical stakeholders and dissenting opinions before Deltans step out to vote the next governor today.

The PDP despite having a little edge over other parties, the race is pretty tight as there are as many as six strong contenders seeking to occupy Government House Asaba.

In view of the gentleman’s agreement on power rotation, all the governorship candidates hail from the Central Senatorial District, the home of the Urhobo ethnic group.

A peep at the list of the gladiators shows that some of them are well known politicians who had contested the same election in the past while there are a few new faces. The race parades the following notable contestants: Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, People’s Democratic Party (PDP); Sen Ovie Omo- Agege, All Progressives Congress (APC); Mr Ken Pela, Labour Party (LP); Chief Great Ogboru, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Chief Kenneth Gbagi, Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Comrade Sunny Ofehe, Young Progressives Party (YPP).

    OBOREVWORI

Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is the current Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) and candidate of the PDP in the governorship election.

Oborevwori is a native of Osubi in Okpe LGA of the state and had his political tutelage as a community youth leader. His candidacy has been faced by several allegations but like the proverbial cat with nine lives he survived all the forces that threatened his emergence.

As the candidate of the ruling party in the state, Oborevwori is seen by critics as a protege of Okowa, the incumbent governor of the state. In the build up to the election, Oborevwori campaigned with the achievements of the Okowa administration in the last eight years and promised to build on the success stories.

He has an agenda for Deltans that’s second to none and his vast experience as a man who has remained in the corridor of power for a long time is a major advantage.

    OMO – AGEGE

Omo – Agege is the current Deputy Senate President and candidate of the APC. Until a few years ago, Omo – Agege was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party where he served as a Commissioner and later as Secretary to the State Government.

In many circles, Omo – Agege is regarded as the main challenger in the Saturday governorship poll given his position at the National Assembly and that of his party at the federal level. In the last eight years of his being in the federal legislature, Omo- Agege is said to had influenced a lot of development projects to his constituency and now hopes to reap a harvest of votes. But politics is not Mathematics and whatever constituency projects he may have attracted might not be enough to yield the quantum of votes he requires to win the polls.

    PELA

Pela, the governorship candidate of the LP comes from a political dynasty dating back to the 1970s. His father and one of his elder brothers were politicians while he had also contested for the Chairmanship of Ughelli South LGA but was not successful at that time.

However, he has become a formidable force given the party he represents and the exploits of the Obidient Movement on the Presidential and National Assembly Elections. Pela parades a rich manifesto and has managed to warm himself into the hearts of the people.

In the course of the campaigns, he promised to increase the minimum wage for workers in the state to N100,000 if elected as governor. He has also guaranteed the people of Delta the best of roads, hospitals and schools if they vote for him.

“If you notice I am not talking too much about building roads, I am not talking too much about healthcare and all that because those are the rights of our people. I guarantee Deltans they will have the best roads, the best hospitals and the best schools.

Pela said that he will ensure fiscal autonomy for the local governments in the state to ensure they get the necessary funds to execute projects and also ensure that the quality of the workforce in the local governments is improved.

As beautiful as these promises might look, Pela may find it difficult to clinch victory at the polls because of the rare dynamics of Delta politics. At best, the LP might succeed in snatching a handful of state assembly seats at the end of the day.

    OGBORU

Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, the governorship candidate of APGA, is a household name across Delta State. Ogboru has been a dogged fighter and a serial contestant, having taken part in every governorship election in Delta State since 2003. The fish merchant turned politician has switched political platforms on a number of occasions to actualise his dreams but all to no avail. Some political analysts familiar with the political trajectory of the state claim that Ogboru won some of those elections he contested but was shortchanged by the system.

Once again, Ogboru looks determined to do battle and pick the crown this time around, but the dynamics of elections do change at every season.

One major disadvantage which might hamper progress is the platform he has chosen to run with this time around. APGA is not particularly popular in the state and might be a hard sell.

    GBAGI

Chief Kenneth Gbagi, lawyer, businessman and politician is also a known personality in the state.

Gbagi started campaigning since 2020 telling whoever cares to listen that he was going to be the next governor of Delta State.

He once served as Minister of State for Education during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Gbagi sees Delta State as a potential industrial hub waiting to be harnessed. As someone with investments in the food and hospitality sectors, Gbagi is itching to lay his hands on the plough to boost the economic fortunes of the state. However, he is running on a platform that is not particularly popular in Delta State.

    OFEHE

Comrade Sunny Ofehe is about the youngest in the 2023 governorship race in Delta State. Incidentally, he is running on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), one of the 18 registered political parties in the country. Ofehe who is a Nigerian Diasporan based in Rotterdam, Holland is a man of ideas. He is deeply fascinated about Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and what global business partnerships could do to revive the ailing economy of Delta State. Although his messages has made some positive impacts on the young people in Delta State, he might not get the required number of votes to give him victory.

    CONCLUSION:

There is panic across the length and breadth of the state because today’s election is expected to throw up a new leadership for the state. Since 1999, the PDP had held sway in Delta State and is considered by many as the stronghold of the party.

The performance of the PDP during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly Elections showed that the PDP was losing ground and this appears to had emboldened the opposition. It will be a fight to finish for the PDP and APC while the other contenders would struggle to push both of them out of the way.

It’s not going to be an easy battle but a winner must emerge hoping that the electoral umpire INEC will not falter this time around as Delta is truly the heart beat of the nation.

  • Court directs INEC to paste, transmit Saturday’s election results electronically

Court directs INEC to paste, transmit Saturday’s election results electronically

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically transmit the Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly’s election results in accordance with its regulations and guidelines.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in a judgment, also ordered the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to upload a scanned copy of the EC8A to INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) immediately after the completion of all the polling units voting and results’ procedures in Akwa Ibom.

The judge further directed the commission to conspicuously paste the publication of its result posters EC60(E) at polling units after completing the EC8A result sheets in the state.

He equally ordered INEC to enforce the observance and compliance of Section 27(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 in the distribution of electoral materials during the conduct of the polls in the state by engaging the services of independent, competent, and reliable logistic companies who are non-partisans or known supporters of any political for the distribution of electoral materials and personnel.

Egwuatu held that since the electoral umpire averred in its filed affidavit that it was aware of its responsibilities under the law and had not failed to carry them out, granting the prayers sought by the applicants would not do any harm to the commission but instead, energise its performance.

He gave the judgment following a suit filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom, Uduakobong Udoh, including 13 state’s House of Assembly candidates for the March 18 elections.

The applicants, in the originating summons marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/334/2023 dated and filed on March 15 by their lawyer, Moses Usoh-Abia, had sued INEC as sole defendant.

The applicants, who sought seven reliefs, prayed the court for an order of mandamus compelling INEC and all its agents to comply with and enforce the provision of Clause 37 of the Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly elections in Akwa Ibom.

They also prayed the court to mandate the presiding officers of all polling units to conspicuously paste the publication of result posters EC460(E) at the polling units after completing the EC8A result sheets.

They sought an order of mandamus compelling the commission to mandate the presiding officers of all polling units in the state to electronically transmit or transfer the result of the polling units, direct to the collation system and use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to upload a scanned copy of the EC8A to INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) immediately after the completion of all the polling units voting and results procedures.

They said this was in compliance with the provision of Clause 38 of the guidelines for the conduct of the polls.

The applicants equally prayed for an order directing INEC to enforce the observance and compliance of Section 27(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 in the distribution of electoral materials during the conduct of the polls by engaging the services of independent, competent, and reliable logistic companies who are non-partisans or known supporters of any political for the distribution of electoral materials and personnel, among other reliefs.

Recall Justice Egwuatu had, on Wednesday, granted leave to the applicants to proceed with a judicial review, filed requisite motion and put INEC on notice, following an ex-parte motion moved by Usoh-Abia.

Upon resumed hearing on the matter on Friday, Usoh-Abia informed that he had complied with the earlier court order and that their motion was served on INEC same Wednesday.

The lawyer said despite the service of their process, the commission was not represented in court.

The judge, however, said that he noticed INEC:s counter affidavit and a preliminary objection to their originating summons in the case file.

He said the application was filed on Thursday.

Responding, Usoh-Abia said though they were yet to be served by the commission, he was ready to proceed with the matter due to the urgency of the case.

He said the motion, dated March 15, had 26-paragraph affidavit with nine exhibits.

The lawyer urged the court to direct the electoral umpire to comply with its regulations and guidelines of Clauses 37 and 38 on the conduct of the elections.

He said the order was necessary because the commission, in the Feb. 25 Presidential and National Assembly polls, failed to transmit results of the elections in the state and across the country.

He argued that INEC created the regulations and guidelines pursuant to Section 148 and 60(5) of the Electoral Act, 2022 to guide the conduct of elections and collating of election result among others.

Usoh-Abia said INEC’s refusal to comply with the law had resulted in serious prejudice; and had foisted uncertainty and frustration on his clients at their various polling units and wards.

The lawyer said if the order was not granted, the same scenario would repeat itself in the Saturday’s poll.

But INEC, in its preliminary objection, said the suit was incompetent and the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain it.

The commission argued that the applicants had not established a justifiable action against it.

It also said that the applicants acted in contravention of the practice direction by commencing the suit via originating summons.

Delivering judgment, Justice Egwuatu said he was satisfied that the applicants had complied with the practice direction rules in the filing of their application.

He also said that he was satisfied that a cause of action had been established against INEC in the paragraphs of the applicants’ process.

The judge, therefore, ordered INEC to direct all its presiding officers to comply with Clauses 37 and 38 of its regulations and guidelines for the conduct of tomorrow’s election in Akwa Ibom.

He held that the commission had the legal duty to act in accordance with the law.

The judge, however, refused to grant other reliefs.

Delta: PDP raises alarm over plot to disenfranchise leaders in Ethiope West LGA by police

Delta Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has raised alarm over a deliberate plot by the Nigerian Police to disenfranchise top leaders, especially in Oghara and Jesse, Ethiope West LGA and detain them over the weekend, thus removing them physically from participating in the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections, scheduled for Saturday, March 18th, 2023.

    Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza,
    Deputy Director, Media & Publicity,
Delta PDP Campaign Council/ State Publicity Secretary,
Delta State PDP raised the alarm on Friday stating that:

“Delta State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has been informed of a deliberate plot by the Nigerian Police to invite our top leaders, especially in Oghara and Jesse, Ethiope West LGA, and subsequently, detain them over the weekend, thus removing them physically from participating in the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections, scheduled for Saturday, March 18th, 2023.

“Our leaders who have been subjected to this unprovoked intimidation and harassment include: BARR. JOHN NANI,
RT. HON. BEN IGBAKPA, ISAAC OMOMEDIA, JOKPA OYOKOSE, HENRY EGHWUBARE, BENJAMIN OBOH, DUNCAN EGWERE, MRS. HAPPY OTOJARERI, PATRICK ATUMAH, FESTUS MADUKU, NICHOLAS OMOKO, PHILIP OKE, and others.

“We unequivocally declare that this is a calculated plot, not only to disenfranchise our leaders and prevent them from exercising their constitutional right to fully participate in the elections, it is also a wicked strategy to remove them from circulation, place them incommunicado and deny our teeming supporters of the critical presence of their leaders at this crucial election.

“We hereby caution in strong terms, that we will not take this obvious harassment, intimidation, and suspected temporary incarceration and incapacitation of our leaders during this crucial election weekend, lying low.

“PDP is a responsible, law-abiding political party and we therefore humbly urge the respected Inspector General of Police to advise the AIG Zone 5 and his officers and men, to maintain professional neutrality and remain apolitical during the election, not only by deferring their invitation to our leaders, if at all necessary, until after the election, but to also desist forthwith from implementing any other ill-intentioned, anti-democratic ploy to surreptitiously clamp down on our leaders on the eve of an election.

“Deltans are convinced that the Nigerian Police would not want to blemish its hard-earned impressive reputation, by engaging in acts of sabotage that can potentially truncate the electoral process and subsequently provoke and unleash a backlash of visible unrest by an aggrieved electorate.

“They should allow restraint and wise counsel to prevail in the above regard, please.

“The world is keenly watching Delta State and Nigeria, he added.

72hrs to election: 8 Delta guber candidates step down, endorse Oborevwori

Barely 72hours to the gubernatorial election, eight governorship candidates and the leadership of their political parties in Delta State have stepped down their ambitions and declared total support for the Governorship Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

The candidates led by Prince Henry Eze of Allied Peoples Movement (APM) said in a news conference in Asaba that their decision to jettison their ambitions and endorse Oborevwori for Saturday’s election was in recognition of the massive achievements of PDP, especially Governor Ifeanyi Okowa administration in the state.

The political parties Action Alliance (AA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), African Action Congress (AAC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Accord Party and Booth Party.

According to Eze, Delta is a traditional PDP state and for stability and furtherance of an atmosphere for inter-party harmony and cohesion, it became necessary to adopt a governorship candidate with good political credentials, pedigree and general acceptability as consensus candidate for the 2023 Governorship Election in the state.

He said “the choice of our consensus candidate fell on Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori of the PDP who happens to be the current Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

“Oborevwori has worked very hard, embarked on ward-to-ward campaigns and done wide consultations with virtually all known stakeholders in the state.

“Delta State political stakeholders believe in continuity and the present Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has performed creditably well in office and it is therefore natural that another PDP Governor should continue from where he stopped in order to consolidate on the gains of his administration.”

He added that it was common knowledge that All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in the country had plunged Nigeria into untold hardship, created an embarrassing security situation that led to banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security challenges.

“The recent acute fuel scarcity in Nigeria, the biting Naira squeeze and near collapse of our educational system has made it clear that the APC government is not one to vote for.

“As Nigerians battle to to upturn the stolen Presidential mandate by Ahmed Tinubu, we should not on the other hand be repeating the same mistake by installing the leprous APC government in Delta State,” Eze stated.

Eze further remarked that the eight governorship candidates came together to endorse Sheriff Oborevwori “as consensus candidate based on the following reasons”:

“Delta State requires a candidate that would continue the laudable projects of Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and Rt. Hon Oborevwori has proven to be a good administrator and a team player, having become the longest serving Speaker in the history of the Delta State House of Assembly and the first to transmute from one administration to another.

“Oborevwori is a calm, calculated workaholic, a devout God fearing Christian who can be entrusted with the management of human and material resources.

“Delta people can no longer endure the pains of another APC government after causing suffering, anguish, deaths and pains that is making Nigerians look like beggars in their own country.

“Like the Americans would say, there is no changing the winning team. PDP Governors in Delta have brought peace and development to the state and there is no reason why we should change a party that is doing well.

“From this end, the governorship candidates of APM, Prince Henry Eze, Emeka Bidokwu (AA), Oghenejabor Onome (AAC), Cosmos Annabel (APP), Emmanuel Ogba (ADP), Engr. Okolie Austine (ADC), Fred Obi of (Accord), and Umudane Sylvester of (Booth Party), are stepping down their governorship ambitions to declare their support for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

“We have taken this all important and crucial decision with the backing of the relevant organs and membership of our various political parties”.
