Anti-party activities: Ward Exco expels Bauchi APC Chairman, Misau

    From Shola Kanji -Bauchi

The Executive Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kukadi/Gundari Ward of Misau LGA, Bauchi State has announced the expulsion of the State APC Chairman, Babayo Aliyu Misau for alleged anti party activities in Bauchi

The Ward Executive Council of the APC declared that the action taken became necessary in order to save the party and instill discipline in the membership of party in Misau local government and the state as a whole.

The Secretary of the party in the ward, Aliyu Hassan Adamu who spoke on behalf of the party Executive members while addressing Journalists on Tuesday at the NUJ Press Center, said that after series of meeting by the party in the Misau LGA, it was agreed that the action be taken.

He said that they arrived at the decision to expell the State chairman from the membership of the party in the ward, adding that they have already intimated the party at the Ward and local government level.

According to him, Babayo Aliyu Misau never campaigned for any of the APC candidates during the Presidential, National Assembly and governorship elections, adding that he was conspicuously absent in all their congresses and meetings throughout the campaign period.

“We, the Executive members of Kukadi/Gundari ward in Misau local government area of Bauchi state have agreed to expell Babayo Misau, the State APC Chairman from the membership of the party in Misau LGA,” he said.

He added that, “because of acts of disloyalty and betrayal to our great party. In his capacity as Chairman of the APC in the state, he neither campaigned or voted for our governorship candidate during the period of the campaign.”

The Secretary alleged that, “He was caught red handed displaying his voters sheet where he did not vote for the party governorship candidate, rather he voted for the candidates contesting the State Assembly elections.”

Aliyu Hassan said that, “He even went as far as discouraging the electorates from voting for the party during the general election, We consider this as a great distrust to our party, therefore he is not fit to be a member of the party in Misau LGA.”

“We have stripped him of his membership of the party in Kukadi/Gundari ward.To this effect, all our party Executive members at the Ward in Misau local government have signed to that effect and henceforth he seizes to be a member of APC in Misau LGA, ” he said.

But in a swift reaction, Babayo Aliyu Misau dismissed the purported suspension saying that it cannot be effective because it was not done in accordance with the estblished procedure, guidelines and constitution of APC.

  • 2023 Elections: Nigerians condemn violence, call for reforms, probe

2023 Elections: Nigerians condemn violence, call for reforms, probe

…blame FG for failing to tackle intimidation of voters

Irked by incidences of violence, vote-buying and other forms of election fraud in some parts of the country during the Governorship and State Assembly elections, more Nigerians have condemned the development while calling for probes and reforms ahead of future elections.

Local and International observers had condemned increased violence, voter intimidation and vote trading during last Saturday’s Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Participants during PUBLIC CONSCIENCE, an anti-corruption radio programme produced by the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, joined the long list of citizens and organizations frowning at the misconduct of the elections on Wednesday in Abuja.

Speaking on the credibility of the March 18 state polls, a Senior Program Officer, Kimpact Development Initiative, Oluwafemi Adebayo, stated that the elections fell short of the expectations of Nigerians owing to the violence that erupted mostly in the Southern part of the country.

Adebayo, while calling for an independent inquiry into the issues that undermined the credibility of the 2023 elections, emphasized that there is a need for a probe of the conduct of the exercise and activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“There should be an independent inquiry into these elections as regards the conduct of the elections. INEC, as an institution; there should be an independent inquiry into their processes, and I’ve been holding this back. Still, I think at a time like this, I support the aspect of holistic reforms, not just towards INEC. I think holistically. We need to look at the electoral system as a whole. There is a need to unbundle INEC”.

On election violence, he said: “For February 25, on the election day, there are 89 cases of violence that we (Kimpact Development Initiative) verified. In the March 18 election, there were 121 cases of violence recorded, and from what we have been able to confirm to date and on election day, we got over 97 of those incidents and with close to 121 victims.

“From our data, 87 percent of the violent attacks happened in the Southwestern part of the country, predominantly Lagos, Rivers”.

Adebayo, however, decried the failure of the Nigerian state to bring perpetrators of electoral violence to book over the years, which has continued to encourage violence and fraud during elections.

Reacting to the skirmishes and corruption that headlined the conduct of the March 18 state elections, a public affairs analyst, Sonny Akoh, condemned thuggery, bigotry and ethnic slurs that made their way into the 2023 general elections, lamenting that “Nigerians did not get the elections they deserve.”
Akoh hailed the resilience of the electorates in ensuring they participate in the elections and faulted the Federal Government for not doing enough to nip hate speeches, voter intimidation and threats of violence issued by associates of politicians on the board before and during state elections.

He noted that the system’s failure to punish electoral offences in the past had emboldened perpetrators of crime during elections.
Speaking on hate speeches and ethnic slurs that played out during the elections, Akoh said: “We have not seen any substantial arrest made in places like Lagos where it was more pronounced.

“We have seen cases where the Commissioner of Police said that somebody who has made a very strong statement that seems to be stampeding human rights was just “joking,” and for agencies like the Nigeria Orientation Agency, they have not been at their best.”

He called on the Judiciary to rise to the occasion ahead of a barrage of post-election litigations. As well as urging disenchanted Nigerians not to give up on participating in future elections.
“Nigerians shouldn’t give up. Are Nigerians tearing their passports? That’s the worst thing they should do; they should sustain this momentum,” Akoh stressed.

Nigerians who called into the programme decried the impact of violence and vote buying in the 2023 general election and joined calls for reform of the electoral system and for political offices to be made unattractive going forward.

Barr. Chidi Onwuekweikpe said: “The main problem we have is that politics in Nigeria is made very attractive. That’s why people kill to get there. We need holistic reforms so that whoever gets there will work. INEC should review their systems and make everybody vote on the same day.”

Project Assistant at Accountability Lab Nigeria, Mnenga Shiiwua, said: “The challenge is that politicians are ready to kill and maim just to get into office. The problem is monetary gain – this is the problem we should focus on.”

Public Conscience is a syndicated weekly anti-corruption radio program used by PRIMORG to draw government and citizens’ attention to corruption and integrity issues in Nigeria.

The program has the support of the MacArthur Foundation.

  • I’ll run a govt centred on all – Enugu Governor-elect-vows

I’ll run a govt centred on all – Enugu Governor-elect-vows

Enugu State Governor -elect, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on Thursday vowed that he would not disappoint the people but would run an all-inclusive administration as he takes over on May 29 2023.

According to him, there can never be division between Nsukka and Nkanu or any other section of the State.

Mbah stated this in his acceptance speech read to journalists in Enugu, barely 15 hours after being declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but obtained by journalists in Abuja.

He said, “Ndi Enugu! This is your Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. As you all know, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced my election as your governor-elect. I accept this announcement with a glad, solemn and grateful heart and with only one obligation: to devote every tissue of my flesh, the totality of my mind and spirit to the task of the greatness of Enugu State.

This victory could not have been won except for God, with the active support of you, the people of Enugu State. While extending my gratitude to you, permit me to appreciate the current governor of our state and members of his cabinet; statesmen; our party leaders; security operatives; religious leaders; civil society groups, the media, and everyone who made this a reality.

“Like every electoral process, the journey of the last few months was intense. The one of the last three days was even fiercer. Enugu was literally at a standstill, waiting, with baited breath, for justice to take its course. There was restiveness in our youths and apprehension in the minds of the entire Ndi Enugu. The fear was that there could be miscarriage of justice. On the streets of Enugu, you could feel the palpable air of an overheated polity brought by the prolonged, tortuous road to justice of the last 72 hours.

“Let me salute the dogged resolve of the people of Enugu State. I must particularly single out the patriotic men and women who, inside rain and skin-pelting sunshine, chose to occupy the INEC office in the last 72 hours. Their resolute resolve pointed at one single cause: That they are in a hurry for Enugu to connect with all the lofty goals that our administration is bringing to bear in our dear state.

“Let me restate that ours will not be a government of any section of Enugu State. It is your government, Ndi Enugu. Under our administration, there can never be division between Nsukka and Nkanu or any other section of the state. We are all brothers and sisters. Those who attempted to create a wedge between us failed woefully.

“We were massively voted by every section of the state. Those who wanted to smack our heads together had an ulterior motive and it was to create perpetual fussing and fighting between us. We resisted their machination and today, we are coming together stronger. Our resolve thereafter is to pursue the spirit of divisiveness from our state.

“Since the electioneering process began, though the road was rough, it was obvious that we were not alone on the rough road. At every intersection of the rough road, Ndi Enugu were with us. Collectively, we trudged along with bravery and strength of character. Your presence shielded us from rough tackles that were aimed at our spine.

It is why you, Ndi Enugu, are the hero of this victory. You sowed your sweats and prolonged discomfort that earned us this victory. In the hot and torrid sun, you were with us; when the rain – literally and metaphorically – drenched us, you stood by us, offering your clothes to damp our wet apparels. And when it was time to stand and be counted with your votes, Ndi Enugu, you did not let us down.

“The choice you made is clear. You did not go through all those grueling moments for the sake of the fleeting berries of today. You made a huge investment for your tomorrow, for the tomorrow of your children and children’s children. You chose to deprive yourselves of the perishable and glittering rewards of now so that a greater tomorrow can come.

“In choosing us, you did not allow mundane reasons to stop you. You abandoned political party divides, religious denomination cleavages, clan and tribe. All you demanded was the candidate who would guarantee a tomorrow for you and generations of Enugu to come.

“Now, Ndi Enugu, that tomorrow is here. Let me pledge to you, once again, that I will serve you and dedicate every of the 1,460 days that make up this initial tenure of office to serving you. I will remember the coarse road you travailed to get us here. In reply, we will speak resoundingly with policies of government that will give you comfort and rest of mind.

‘As I told you during the campaign, the administration we will run will bring joy to your hearts. We will make you remember March 18, 2023 with a toothy smile. In infrastructure, health, tourism, education and development of our state in general, we will run a government that you can be proud of. We are in a hurry to dualize the Abakpa, Ugwuogo Nike-Nsukka road, build a monorail from Enugu to Nsukka, Udi, Awgu and construct a ring road to connect all the 17 local government areas of Enugu State.

“We are in a hurry to build a world class Theme Park in Enugu. We are in a hurry to establish Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in all the local government areas, as well as Agro-Allied Processing Zones and Industrial Parks in all our senatorial zones.

“We are in a hurry to unleash the tech talents in our young people, and grow and nurture their interest in business and vocations skills. We shall build a School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), an Innovation Incubation Centre, as well as a Skill Enhancement Centre in each of the three senatorial zones.

“Ours shall not be an administration by a section of the state. We shall run an all-inclusive government designed to provide an inclusive economic development for our dear state. As we bring water to all homes in Enugu metropolis in 180 days of our being sworn in, we shall bring water, in the shortest possible time, to Nsukka, Oji River, Udi, Awgu and others too. We shall frontally confront the infrastructural deficits in all parts of the state and no one will be left behind.

“Let me, at this juncture, call on everyone to join me in this task of chiseling a great tomorrow from the rock of a despondent today. In the elections that we ran, we are all winners. No one is a victor, nor is anyone vanquished. The task at hand transcends emotions, politics and other mundane divides.

“It is why I extend my hands of fellowship to all my colleagues with whom I ran the gubernatorial election. Our dear Enugu State is greater than all of us. Let us come together and give our people a tomorrow that befits their hard-work, industry and ancestry of greatness. Once again, Ndi Enugu, I thank you for reposing your trust in us. Together, our tomorrow is here.”
