2027: I never said that – Peter Obi rebuffs VP rumours

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi  has denied agreeing to accept a vice -presidential position in the event of a political alliance in the 2027 elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the former Anambra governor via his microblogging platform, X formerly Twitter on Saturday clarified his stance on collaborating with other political entities, stressing he is not desperate to become president.

Obi noted that some fifth columnists resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting his comments during a TV interview.

He said, “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.

“Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record. I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

“I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.”

Obi reiterated his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing issue.

“I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions. When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election,” he said.

2027 elections: Labour Party strips Peter Obi, others of automatic ticket

The Labour Party has said there would be no automatic ticket for Mr Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.

Obi was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the party said this on Monday in Abuja while addressing newsmen. The resolution reached after the NEC meeting was read by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Mr Innocent Okeke.

“All tickets of the party from Presidency to the House of assemblies are open to all qualified Nigerians,” he said.

Recall that Otti convened a stakeholder meeting held in Umuaiha Abia.

During the meeting, the National Working Committee, the National Executive Council, State Council, Local Government and Ward Executives of the party were dissolved and replaced with a Caretaker Committee.

But, Okeke said that Otti, who convened the meeting, did not have the power within the party’s Constitution as provided in Article 14 (4) (B).

According to him, such power is vested in the National Secretary with the approval of National Chairman.

“NEC in session further reiterates that governor of Abia does not even have the power to call his ward executive meeting without the approval and the consent of his ward chairman.

“The Labour Party Constitution provides how members of the National Working Committee, State Executive Committee and all other officials of the party can be removed.

“NEC in session also grants the National Working Committee powers to take disciplinary action against any member that brings the party to disrepute,” Okeke said.

Okeke, therefore, called on all  members of the party supporters and the general public to disregard Otti’s meeting and its outcome.

He said that NEC reposed confidence in the leadership of the Mr Julius Abure-led NWC and urged all party members to continue to respect the leadership of the party and obey its lawful directives.

In a speech, he tagged: “The Beautiful Ones are not Yet Born in Nigeria” the embattled Abure said the Otti’s action was a show of betrayal.

“Let me be clear; this action was not just illegal, it was a betrayal of everything the Labour Party stands for.

“The Labour Party has always been a beacon of hope for the oppressed, the marginalised and the voiceless in Nigeria. Our mandate is to unite this country not divide it.

“Yet, here we are, faced with a situation where individuals who have benefitted from the trust and support of this great party now work to destabilise it from within.

“This is why I say the beautiful ones are not yet born in Nigeria, but they will be born through our collective effort’’, he said.

PDP is dead; I will win 2027 presidential election – Kwankwaso

National leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso has said he will win the 2027 presidential election. Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, made the outburst on Saturday when he inaugurated the NNPP Secretariat, along IBB Way, Katsina.

He was in Katsina for a condolence visit to the Yar’adua’s family over the death of their matriarch, Hajiya Dada.

According to him, the party is ready to take over the presidency, states and other positions across the country come 2027. He explained that the party was heading towards success in the 2027 General Elections.

The Kwankwasiya leader said, “I wish to remind you that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is already dead, because we were in the party, since they have gone out of the line, we decided to check out.”

He called on Nigerians, especially women and youths not to allow themselves to be ‘deceived with spaghetti or money during the next elections.’ Kwankwaso also called on the party’s leaders to redouble their commitment towards the success of the party in the state and the country as a whole.

He commended them and other stakeholders in the state for renovating the state secretariat, saying that it is part of preparations towards success. The NNPP leader also pledged to support a little boy, Abubakar Ibrahim of Yammawa area of the state, who suffers from severe acute malnutrition

Also speaking, the NNPP state Chairman, Alhaji Armaya’u Abdulkadir, said the party was doing everything possible to enlighten the electorate on the party’s new logo. According to him, the new logo is symbolising education for all, which is the most concerned area of the Kwankwasiyya leader.

He said, ”There is the need for the party to embark on grassroots sensitisation to inform the members on the importance of the new logo.”

  • The Brewing Distraction – By Chidi Amuta

The Brewing Distraction – By Chidi Amuta

The Nigerian politician is a most futuristic animal. He is above all else a most distractive creature, forever creating political outlets and ventilations. While our civil society remains reactive , our political class is eternally ahead in terms of setting an agenda for distracting the attention of the polity for purposes of keeping itself busy in terms of the direction of what happens next politically. Check: 2027 is literally four years away. Check: the Tinubu presidency is a little over a year old. Check: all the calamities that  hell holds in stock for bad places on earth has converged on Nigeria. The possibility that Mr. Tinubu and his rabble assembly of a government is likely to solve any of our serious crises remains an illusion. Yet, politicians must remain active and relevant.

Four years to the end of the Tinubu tenure, some politicians are gearing up for what happens in the next election, in 2027. Overwhelmed by the present realties of a state that is literally at a halt, some politicians would rather overlook the present so that public attention can skip present difficulties and focus on 2027.

Creative and futuristic as always, our politicians have found a way to keep busy and get the people politically engaged. The specter of 2027 has been fast -forwarded. It is as though the next election is next year. No need to worry about bandits and the endless flow of blood all over the land. No need to worry about the elongating unemployment queues. No need to worry about how many baskets of useless Naira notes you need to buy a miserable US dollar.  Forget what the market women are telling you about high prices of food items. They are all killjoys who are hell bent on spoiling the party of the Tinubu renewed hope mandate party. Just listen to the new song from the politicians or better chant the new old national anthem.

Mr. Bode George, a constant gadly and overgrown child of South West political rabble rowsing, has been busing engaging Atiku Abubakar in recent times.  He has advised Mr. Abubakar who aspired to be the next president to prepare instead for the 2031 presidential elections instead of even the 2027.

Worse still, several groups of serious politicians from the northern hemisphere of the nation have lately been meeting. There is no secret about their agenda. They are prepping for the 2027 presidential election. Their agenda is simple and straightforward. They are united by two things. They got left behind by the Tinubu gravy train and now  all crave for the centre stage next time around. They cannot wait. More importantly, they have nothing tangible to keep them busy between now and 2027.  For now, they are united by a curious consensus to recruit ex- President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election to ensure that Mr. Tinubu does not have the chance of a second term in the Villa. By this rough script, the political North wants to snatch the presidency from Mr. Tinubu who has not shown good faith or sufficient gratitude to the region in spite of his Muslim-Muslim ticket and inheritance of the former Buhari throng of voters.

The strong argument is that the Northern hemisphere of our political space in the APC  supported his emergence of Mr. Tinubu in the Presidential Villa  in compensation for the clueless Buhari whose most important object was poltical recompense to Mr. Tinubu. The aftermath of the Tinubu victory is looking more skewed to the northern political mind.  It is not just the sharing of pork that is at issue. The region is in a poor shape, perhaps worse than since the creation of Nigeria.

Security in the north is nasty,  brutish and almost non existent. The distribution of the gravy content of ‘renewed hope’ in the region is not quite as generous as was expected. The handouts to interest groups in the region do not seem as generous as it was even under the xenophobic Mr. Buhari. Bandits are helping themselves to the spois of war instead of waiting to be served by willing political actors. So, what to do? Support the apparently harmless Mr. Jonathan to complete his entitled one term  so that presidential power can return effortlessly to the north.

The quest for the return of Jonathan is strictly not about better governance for Nigeria or indeed the beleaguered northern hemisphere. The power arithmetic is not about the quality of governance or what could make Nigeria a more manageable federation away from its present dilapidated state. The gathering political distraction is not about how to understand the dynamics of power and the current social and economic forces that have made the  north such a dangerous place or even made the whole of Nigeria a bad place. It is a rehash of the same old North-South nonsense that has left Nigeria damaged and destroyed. The impending distraction is just another chapter in the bad chapter of Nigeria’s unending tragic tale of disastrous governance. We are stiull waiting for the political class that sees beyond region, religion and axis on the national compass.

In the renewed distraction, there is hardly any thought about imparting skills that will work for Nigeria as a whole. There is no discussion about functional education, economic empowerment, population control, urgent modernization and investment in education, agriculture and a different work ethics that prioritizes entrepreneurship, grueling hard work and productivity for better self actualization and overall national development. It is all about North-South, Muslim-Christian balancing. It is all about feeding the same old insatiable and unproductive political elite that has left the majority of the people stranded and abandoned. It is the feathering of the nest of the same runaway elite that has abandoned the people and relocated to villas in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Abuja, Lagos and Cairo.

Meanwhile, the hapless Mr. Jonathan is busy attending every available social event around the country in an unstated gathering campaign for what he does not quite fully understand. Himself a prime beneficiary of Nigeria’s politics of entitlement and allocation, Mr. Jonathan may have garnered quite some experience and exposure after office in his countless international democratic engagements. It is also quite possible that he has had time to reflect on his work experience as President  to be better equipped for a retrial run. But the Jonathan proposition is a politically convenient distraction from the crushing  urgency of the tasks that cal us all fiercely.

On his part, Mr. Tinubu who understands mostly the language of political survival has responded to the hints of his eventual ouster. In response to the imminent distraction, the Tinubu incumbency has found both a convenient political distraction and  veritable challenge. It is urgent. Mr. Tinubu has just settled into a cosy world of luxury jets, lush villas, endless motorcades, sweetheart contracts and endless junkets to all ends of the universe.

Tinubu is first and foremost a power monger and political entrepreneur.  His is an ultimate political entrepreneur, a merchant of power in the mot Machiavellian sense. Every power has a price tag and nearly every political outcome is a transactional.  Political survival is his foremost  prerogative. He clutches to no ideal, rules by no principles or set of ideas. His prime objective is to be president of Nigeria by all means, which he has achieved. The other two entitlements are to hold the oil and gas cheque books and the key to the Central Bank. He has all these imperial booties in his clutch plus endless air miles on a fleet of luxury presidential jets.

All these would mean little if indeed Nigerians could see a clear purposive governance in place or in progress. Not quite sure. A gravy train is on the rail, coasting down  a sloppery slope almost unstoppable gradient. Now comes a bunch of killjoys who have declared their intent to stop Tinubu midstream. And he is not likely to turn a blind eye to this distraction.

Yet for whatever it is worth, the protection of his incumbency and its possible  tenure elongation into a second term is an urgent political  challenge which no incumbent president can leave unattended. In response to the PDP- based maneuvres on the Jonathan proposition, the Tinubu political machinery has reportedly swung into action to counter what may be its most consequential political threat. Counter groups have been mobilized. Internal APC  work groups have set up with a mandate to thwart the moves of the derailers. What lies ahead is therefore a battle royale. The political back and forth between the two sets of political forces is likely to  be the grand distraction of the season.

The grand historic question is whether the Tinubu presidency will consign the urgent task of national salvation to the counter force of the battle for supremacy in 2027. The possibilities are ominous and frightening. The forces poised against national survival as themselves gruesome and determined. The forces of anarchy fuelling banditry, serial kidnapping, senseless murders in high places and sheer lawlessness are mindless and unhinged. No one is certain that the Nigerian state in its present state of disrepair will prevail over its traducers.

Yet we are at the moment of decision and prioritization. National survival must precede and supersede the survival of any individual power regime or calculus. The guarantee of a second presidential term sounds like a political expediency. In the nature of nations. Existence precedes essence. No matter how fancicul its format may be, a nation must exist before it manifests its goodness. The very survival of the Nigerian nation is the more pressing urgency. Without a nation to call home, there will be neither a presidency nor a tenure to elongate or argue about. It is only by reinforcing the pillars of national existence and ensuring good governance and a fair society that tenure elongation can be placed on the table. The basic ingredients of national prevalence are the same basic existential issues that today haunt the entire Nigeria: food, shelter, poverty, costs of living in the open market and some hope that basic safety of lives and property can be guaranteed by the state.

  • Bode George to Atiku: You cannot be president in 2027

Bode George to Atiku: You cannot be president in 2027

Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot contest for president in 2027. Bode George stressed Atiku must wait till 2031 if he must contest for president again.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Atiku was the PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, who lost, along with Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, to President Bola Tinubu.

George, in a statement on Wednesday, said that a southerner must occupy the office of the President and Commander in Chief from 2023 to 2031, saying “that is the reality of our country, PDP constitution and our polity”.

“Even in 2027, Atiku will be 81 years and this is the time for him to embrace the President Joe Biden concept of allowing the younger generation to run for the highest office in the land. I have nothing personal against Alhaji Abubakar. He is my friend but the truth must be told. By 2027, by God’s Grace, I will also be in my 80s.

“So, what am I looking for in public office as an octogenarian? The same principle should apply to Alhaji Abubakar. We all saw what American President, Joe Biden, did recently when he stepped down for Kamala Harris to contest the November presidential election.

“That is the hallmark of a statesman. Alhaji Abubakar should do same so that in 2027, PDP will field a southerner as presidential candidate,” George, a former military governor of Ondo State, said.

According to him, the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner from Katsina State, just left office after ruling for eight years. He said that power at the federal level could not go to the North in 2027 because “that is the reality of our country and our party’s constitution”.

George said that Section 7, Sub-section 3 (C) of the PDP Constitution stated that zoning and rotation must be maintained for justice, fairness and equity.

He added: “In our party, this is the right and logical thing to do in the present political circumstances. But if Alhaji Abubakar is desperate to contest again, I will advise him as a friend, a party man and brother to wait till 2031. By then, he will be 85 years.

“As loyal party members, we must continue to respect PDP Constitution. Fair is fair. I joined the PDP in 1998 and I have remained in this party since.”

The PDP chieftain said that he was elected National Vice -Chairman (South-West) and later,Deputy- National Chairman and now, a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and one of the respected elders and credible voices of our party.

He said: “I have not defected to any other party. While I was in Wadata Plaza, Alhaji Abubakar was in the Villa as Vice President. So, we know ourselves and the two of us know the principles guiding this party.

“We should not do anything that will destroy our party and the country. In 2027, the concept of Turn-by-Turn Nigeria Limited must be strictly followed by our party.

“PDP must look for a southerner to wrest power from the APC because that party of strange bed fellows wants to destroy this country, economically and politically.

“So, Nigerians are waiting for us to rescue them in 2027 but a southerner must lead the battle,” he said.

George described as laughable, a report by Abubakar’s media adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, calling him (George) a tribal bigot, over his position on power rotation.

“I read a report by one of Alhaji Abubakar’s media aides accusing me of tribalism,  I just laughed. My best friend today is a Fulani man, Admiral Murtala Nyako.

“I was the Director-General of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Presidential Campaign Organisation for the 2007 elections. The late president trusted me. So, I cannot be accused of being tribalistic.

“I also served the military well. My records are there for all to see. But, you know in politics, people can say anything to tarnish your image. Despite that, the truth must be told. What you will not accept, don’t give to others.

“I can boldly say that I am a detribalised Nigerian and a committed  member of the PDP. I don’t harbour any disdain or hate for Alhaji Abubakar or any other PDP member,” he said.

George urged every member of the party to” embrace and respect the entrenched principles of zoning and rotation, bestowed on the party by our founding fathers since inception in 1998, “no matter whose ox is gored.

“The principles explicitly stipulate that, at the end of every eight years, all elective and party offices should change from the northern divide to the southern divide  and vice versa. That is the position which I will continue to champion till thy kingdom come!,” he said.

  • How PDP can win 2027 presidential election – Bode George

How PDP can win 2027 presidential election – Bode George

Chief Bode George, a former Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) National Deputy Chairman, says the party must stick to its power rotation grundnorm  between the North and South to win in 2027.

George said this while fielding questions from newsmen during his address to the nation, titled “My Thoughts on The State of Our Country in the Last 25 Years: A Time to Chart A New Direction”in Lagos .

He was  reacting to a recent statement made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and PDP 2023 Presidential candidate that he would drop his ambition in 2027  if the party decides to pick its candidate from the  South East.

Abubakar, who made the comment after a meeting  with the Labour Party Presidential candidate in 2023,Mr Peter Obi , said if Obi returns to PDP and the party zones the presidential ticket to the South East in 2027 ,he would drop his ambition and support him.

George said power rotation must be  sacrosanct, adding PDP  should have learnt its lessons from  the defeat of 2023.

He said: “Our party has a grundnorm. The constitution of our party as compiled by the founding father, Baba Ekwueme (former Vice President Alex Ekwueme) and his team will remain a guiding light.

“We have paid a big price for not following the rule. We have made  mistakes, let us learn. It has cost us too much.

“Section 7 sub section 3C states very clearly that the party must adhere to the zoning and rotation procedures for party positions and elective positions simultaneously for things to work well.

George, a PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) member, said that power rotation, as embedded in the party’s constitution, was to guard against any situation that might bring back the military to power.

He said that the party’s founding fathers divided the country into six geo-political zones to capture the majority and minority tribes and give all a sense of belonging.

“This is because the problem since 1960 is between majority tribes and minority tribes.

“The majority tribe will have their way, but the minority will just be mere onlookers. That was the major cause of coups and counter coups,” he said.

According to him, the party’s founding fathers came up with the idea that the top six positions in the land  be shared by the six geo-political zones for equity and justice.

He listed the positions as  offices of the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the party.

He added: “They (founding fathers) agreed that every eight years, all the positions held by northern zones should come to the south zones, vice versa for rotation.

“The party does not micro zone. That idea was very refreshing and what kept democracy alive then.

“The moment we (the PDP) started tinkering with that idea officially against our grundnorm, that was what created  division in PDP.”

He said that Abubakar’s micro zoning comment under which he would he would stay clear of contest, was not known to the party’s constitution.

George said: “I want to appeal to him, in the interest of millions of Nigerians, and those who are still coming, to allow this nation rise.

“The party cannot tell anybody not to contest because it will run foul of the members’ fundamental human rights ,but the party must definitively state that the number one is going down (South) or Up (North) depending on who has held it.”

He said that after President Buhari had spent eight years, it was normal for lovers of justice and fairness to recognise that it was the turn of the South to use same two-term tenure.

“If PDP had adhere to its grundnorms, the party will still be in Aso Rock Villa today.

“This is because if you add the votes garnered by Mr Peter Obi of Labour Party, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso of New Nigeria People’s Party, and those of Abubakar of PDP together in the 2023 general elections, the PDP would have won.

“I am praying, one is not getting younger, as long as I live, I want us to follow the Constitution that the founding fathers gave us.

“But if we continue to manipulate things, I hope we have learnt our lessons because a divided house will remain a defeated house,” he said.

On the crisis at the  Lagos chapter of the PDP, George said that it was not a big crisis.

He said the problems at the chapter were being  caused by some individuals “just looking for positions”.

We will regain presidency in 2027 – PDP Reps caucus boasts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Represebtatives says it must regain the presidency it lost in 2015, as the seat of power had “become our party’s birth right”.

Rep. Chinda Kingsley, the leader of the minority caucus in the House, said this while briefing newsmen after the third meeting of PDP lawmakers in Abuja, on Tuesday.

“We are going back as we resume the session to commence a strong, virile and purpose-driven opposition to give the people a voice in the parliament,” the Caucus said.

The lawmakers issued a three-months ultimatum to the Federal Government to normalise the security situation in the country.

According to Kingsley, government must immediately take steps to ensure that the security situation in the country is normalised.

“We x-rayed the security situation in our country and we resolved that we can no longer take this situation where Nigeria is today almost tagged as ‘one life, one minute silence’.

“After three-months, the caucus will take further steps to sensitise and mobilise Nigerians to take their security into their hands,” the legislators said.

He said the caucus also agreed to call on all party caucuses, the board of trustees, national executive committee and the national working committee of the party to embark on reconciliatory measures.

This, according to him, is with the view to resolving all litigations that are pending and have hindered the party’s quest for a substantive National Chairman.

He called on leaders of the PDP to continue to demonstrate unconditional loyalty to the party and ensure that the party is placed where she enjoyed the position of the largest party in Africa.

He said that PDP members in the House of Representatives were united, indivisible, committed and out to perform their duty as the watchdog on behalf of the Nigerian people.

  • 2027: PDP aims to wrestle Lagos from APC

2027: PDP aims to wrestle Lagos from APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for discipline and unity among party members in Lagos State to ensure victory in the state in 2027.

Mr Rahman Owokoniran, South-West Secretary of the party, made the call at the Lagos PDP Maiden Ramadan Lecture on Sunday  in Lagos.

The programme was organised by the state chapter of the party in conjunction with the Supreme Heritage and Legacy Foundation.

Owokoniran decried the lack of unity and discipline in the state chapter of the party, saying it  had affected the electoral fortune of the party in the state.

He said that  the party could only win elections in the state if members returned to their various wards to foster unity and peace among themselves.

“I want to let us know  that the fate of our party is in our hands, and all the prayers we have offered today for the unity and peace of our members will not be in vain.

“We should know that we have a role to play to ensure progress in the state chapter. We should go  back to our various wards and educate others that are not present here on the need to foster unity and work towards the objective of winning the state governorship election in 2027.

“The disunity among members has affected our chances in the various elections . So, we should unite and   start working towards growing our members at our various wards,”he said.

Speaking earlier, the State Party Chairman, Mr Philip Aivogi, also urged party faithful to be united and  ensure peace reign at the state chapter.

According to him ,it is only if members are united that the party can  defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) in the 2025 local government elections in the state  and the 2027 general elections.

The chairman urged members to use the period of Ramadan to pray for the progress of the party in the state.

“We cannot afford to allow this party to collapse .We cannot afford to disappoint those who founded the party as they built the party on a strong foundation.

“We must, therefore, work towards  repositioning  the party so that we can win elections”he said.

The  guest lecturer, Sheikh Fadhilah Mustapha, said the party needed  to take its rightful place by putting its house in order ,to win the state in 2027.

Mustapha urged party leaders to work towards  returning  Nigeria to its glorious days when  the country was truly the giant of  Africa.

The cleric offered prayers for unity and peace in the country .

Party leaders in attendance included Alhaji Muritala Ashorobi, a former PDP State Chairman and  Mr Tai Benedict,  Deputy State Chairman of the party.

  • NNPP parleys Africa’s 15th richest man ahead of 2027 elections

NNPP parleys Africa’s 15th richest man ahead of 2027 elections

Leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has kicked off the first of its talks for the 2027 presidency with International Award winner, Dr Sami Charles.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Charles was recently featured in Forbes as the 15th richest African and fourth richest Nigerian.

The meeting which was held at the residence of NNPP Founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam on Sunday in Lagos, had some NNPP executives nationwide,  including its  National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major in attendance.

Charles, was accompanied by many distinguished Nigerians including the wife of Olubadan of Ibadanland, and daughter of late Dr  Nnamdi Azikiwe, Olori Joyce Anene Balogun,  and Prof. Steve Azaiki, a former Secretary to the  State Government of Bayelsa  under Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

Also on the entourage were, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku,  wife of the presidential hopeful, Anita Ayodele-Charles, and the Dan Maliki of Lagos, Dr Dahiru Aliyu among others.

Recall that President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, in November 2023, presented the GUSI Peace Prize Award to Charles as the Most Dynamic African Businessman of the Year 2023.

The GUSI award, Asian equivalent of the international Noble Prize Award, was received by Charles, a business Mogul and Lawyer, and a former presidential aspirant of the Labour Party, in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

The award was in recognition of Charles’ substantial contributions to peace, global investments and egalitarian service to humanity in diaspora, particularly in Nigeria.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Aniebonam disclosed that Charles was to have been the NNPP presidential candidate in 2023, before Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso  emerged as the party’s flag bearer.

Aniebonam, however, said  the meeting, which is like a homecoming for Charles, does not foreclose participation of other Nigerians for the NNPP ticket in 2027.

“This is just the beginning. The stakes are higher now and the NNPP ticket is open to all Nigerians including Kwanwkwaso, and we will be fair to all our aspirants.

“The only snag is that whoever will emerge as our candidate, must be of like mind. The only thing at stake is greater Nigeria.

“This is a continuation of a journey started in 2001, a lot of personalities have come our way but we need someone with the acumen, character and wherewithal to deliver,” the NNPP Founder said.

On if it was not too early for the party to begin negotiations for 2027, the NNPP founder said: ” There is nothing early about this dialogue. Contesting for the presidency is a huge task and 2027 may seem far but very near.”

On Charles as the NNPP candidate, Aniebonam said:  “No doubt Charles is a big shot. He has pedigree in line with the NNPP mandate, he is charismatic but we will give chance to everyone. The choice will be determined by members.”

Also speaking, Charles said he held no grudges for not picking the NNPP ticket in 2023 as it was not a do or die affair.

“I also will not have grudges if I do not emerge as their candidate in 2027. Am open to competition but hopeful of getting the ticket as  a vehicle to offer service to Nigeria.

“Aniebonam has laid  the foundation for us to continue. I read the NNPP manifesto and felt that’s where I belong.

“Anyone who shares our aspirations is free to join. I believe in our first generation politicians. Am an adherent of Zik. They were politicians. What we have now are merchants.

“Nigeria is bleeding. We must begin to genuinely salvage Nigeria,” he said.

The presidential hopeful, however, urged Nigerians to support the current administration, noting that: “it does not matter who is president, he or she should be supported within their time frame for the benefit  of Nigerians.

“Whether or not You like your President, You must support him because only God can make a King and animosity will only mar our progress as a nation.

“Not supporting whoever is in power to grow the nation is disservice to Nigeria and Nigerians,” he added.

Charles has been honoured with several awards and conferred with various chieftaincy titles in Nigeria and Ghana.

Atiku failed to do his job, we don’t need merger to unseat Tinubu in 2027 – PDP Chieftain

Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain in Lagos and former member, Atiku Abubakar 2023 presidential campaign council, says the party does not need any merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Pearse, who said this on Friday in an interview in Lagos, ruled out the possibility of any merger because, according to him, there had not been a genuine history of merger in the country.

He noted that the party was not finished but only needed to close ranks and put its house in order to win elections.

“PDP cannot be running away. Let us forget merger. Are you talking about PDP merging with some of these political parties which do not have offices?

“We should look inward, reposition ourselves and improve the party, that is what we need to do.

“PDP is not finished if we do the right thing. President Tinubu will be gone in 2027 if we do the right thing,” the chieftain said.

According to him, there is nobody PDP can merge with: “PDP needs to stand on its own and build what it has. If we build what we have we will defeat anybody.

“We have 13 governors now, we have 40 per cent of the national assembly, what do we need merger for and with who? What can merger bring to PDP?”

On the outcome of the 2023 Presidential Election, Pearse said PDP’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku’s failure to reconcile with ex-Rivers Gov. Nyesom Wike and others, paved way for President Bola Tinubu to win the election.

“It was Atiku that failed to do his job. He didn’t do what he needed to do. He should not have fought against Wike, even if he didn’t want to use him as his vice, he could have promised to make him minister of petroleum.

“Wike will do the work and release money to prosecute the election and ensure victory for the party. He didn’t do it,” he said.

Some politicians and opinion moulders’ have been advocating merger of opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
