Babies conceived by women above 35 years stand the risk of Down syndrome – Therapist

Women who conceive pregnancies after the age of 35 years stand the risk of being delivered of babies with Down syndrome, a speech therapist, Maryam Ibrahim-Maifada, has said.

“The older the mother, the higher the risk of having a baby with Down syndrome,’’ Ibrahim-Maifada told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Friday.

“Down syndrome is a genetic disorder. Most babies are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes within each cell for a total of 46. Majority of babies with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome,’’ she said.

She noted that babies born with Down syndrome faced physical and mental challenges throughout life.

They typically have distinctive body and facial features that set them apart. They are more likely to develop slowly, and are more at risk of some medical conditions, she said.

Ibrahim-Maifada listed some of the medical conditions as delays in speech and language development, attention problems, sleep difficulties, stubbornness and tantrums, delays in recognition, and delayed toilet training.

She also listed physical signs of Down syndrome to include short, stocky physical size; with a short neck, poor muscle tone, flattened facial features, especially the bridge of the nose, and small ears.

Others are almond-shaped eyes that slant upward, small hands and feet, single deep crease across the center of the palm.

She listed other medical conditions associated with Down syndrome to include heart problems, thyroid abnormalities, auditory and vision problems and low fertility rate males.

“About 50 per cent of women with Down syndrome are able to bear children. The possibility of risk of their children having the condition is between 35 per cent and 50 per cent,’’ Ibrahim-Maifada.

  • I never thought I will be unmarried at 35- Abimbola Craig

I never thought I will be unmarried at 35- Abimbola Craig

Popular actress and producer, Abimbola Craig known for her role in ‘Skinny Girl in Transit’ has revealed that she never thought she would be unmarried at 35.

The outspoken role interpreter who would be 35 in November recounting her story via a video shared on her YouTube channel, said she wasn’t intentional about dating: “Growing up, even till now, I am not the kind of girl that will sit down and tell you I always knew I was going to be married by this time.I always knew I was going to be ‘this’ by this time.I just never set those kind of long-term goals. I am the kind of person that sets short term realistic goals. I just never thought by the time I would be 35, I would be single. It’s weird but it’s true. People like me, we are funny, because I never actively took time out to date. I didn’t realize there was something like being inactive when it comes to dating, until when I spent a lot of time with myself during the pandemic. For the longest time, people would always approach me and I will tell them I am not in a relationship. They would ask me ‘Why are you single’? As I have spent much time with myself especially in the last one year, I realized that as much as I was intentional with everything else, when it came to dating, I wasn’t”.

Craig added that because she wasn’t intentional about dating, she couldn’t attract anyone though guys were having conversations with her.

.”I realized that subconsciously, I wasn’t because I wasn’t ready and by the time I got ready and realized I was ready, I was literally 34.I sit down and I realized that ‘Bimbo this is why this never happened’.As much as I might not like the concept of you are what you attract, it did work in favour of me.What I mean by that is that, I wasn’t looking and there was no way people were going to come to me. It wasn’t that people weren’t having conversations with me or hitting on me, I just would constantly always just cock-block myself and I couldn’t understand why. Although in hindsight, people that I cock-blocked myself from, I never saw myself dating them. Now realizing that I spent so much time being intentional about a lot of things but not with my dating life, it’s a hard pill to swallow, but not a sad pill. I have gotten there and so now I am aware. And so now I am working more on being more intentional about dating. I am now intentional about it because I know I am ready, because I need that balance and I want that balance. It’s a different thing if that’s not you and you don’t want it, but I do. But this journey to 35, I definitely never thought I would be unmarried at 35.But that’s fine because good things are not rushed”.

Pope Francis will declare 33 martyrs and 2 others from Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Italy, as the Catholic Church’s new saints on Sunday at a Canonization Mass in Rome’s St. Peter’s Square.

They include 30 so-called “Matryrs of Natal”, including priests and lay people, who were killed in 1645 in a wave of anti-Catholic persecution by Dutch Calvinists in Natal, Brazil.

Another group of 3 indigenous martyrs from Mexico – Cristobal, Antonio and Juan – known as the “Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala” will also be canonized.

Aged between 12 and 13, the children were among the first indigenous Catholics of Mexico who were ‎killed between 1527 and 1529 for refusing to renounce their faith and return to their ancient ‎traditions.‎

Among the new saints will also be two European priests. One of them is Spanish Piarist Father, Manuel Míguez González, the founder of the Daughters of the Divine Shepherdess, or the Calasanzian Institute.

He died in 1925. The other is Italian Cappuchin priest, Fr. Angelo da Acri, who died in 1739.
