Nigerians generate 40,000MW power from generators – FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that about 40,000 megawatts of electricity is being generated by Nigerians  from generators powered by Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, and those run by Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel.

This was made known at the ministerial summit on Integrated National Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan while examining the key challenges to Nigeria’s electricity reliability through the prism of governance, adherence to rules/contracts and finance.

The country’s  power generation and supply from its national grid revolves between 3,500MW and 4,500MW for an estimated population of 200 million people.

In his address at the summit, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, pointed out that one of the main objectives of the Nigerian electricity sector reform programme initiated over 23 years ago was to make electricity available to consumers across the country with efficiency and consistency.

This, however, had yet to be achieved, rather, according to the minister, Nigeria had continued to burn hundreds of billions of naira to generate electricity through diesel- and petrol-powered generators.

He stated that electricity consumption per capita in Nigeria was at 140kilowatt-hour in 2021, relatively low in comparison to neighbouring countries and almost three times lower than the average for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Adelabu said, “Nigeria is a case study in a deep electricity paradox. Nigeria has grown to become the host of probably the world’s largest fleet of diesel- and petrol-powered generation capacity that is utilised for baseload supply.

“Various figures have been mentioned but it is safe to say that this fleet measures no less that 40,000MW of total capacity.

“At an average operating cost of no less than N250/kWh as opposed to an average economic tariff today of approximately N120/kWh (weighted between petrol and diesel generation), the daily cost of this extreme inefficiency in electricity supply in Nigeria, is measurable in tens of billions of naira daily.”

Continuing he added that this “is hard-earned money that would better be deployed to savings, discretionary consumer spending and tax revenue for governments instead of being literally burnt and going up in diesel and petrol emissions that harm our environment and contribute to incessant noise pollution in many of Nigeria’s cities.

“It’s an honour to leverage my role in bringing together our industry for collaborative action, aiming to rectify this disconcerting situation. Our immediate goal is to significantly transform the current ratio between backup electricity generation and on-grid supply in the near to mid-term.”

According to Adelabu, it was time to restructure the Transmission Company of Nigeria into two entities: the Independent System Operator, and the Transmission Service Provider.

“This restructuring must synchronise with the evolving landscape of State Electricity Markets, addressing calls for the decentralisation of the national grid into regional grids interconnected by a new higher voltage national or super-grid.

“Essentially, we must ask whether the government should directly provide electricity nationwide or rather facilitate its provision. Drawing comparisons with China’s centralised model and the US’s diverse access models—like rural cooperatives and state-based utilities with regulatory oversight—presents various considerations.”

Dr Sid has won a slew of awards including ‘Revelation of the year’ at the 2011 edition of The Headies and the ‘Best Afro Hip Hop Video’ category at the Nigerian Music Video Awards in 2009.

TheNewsGuru recalls that the Delta-born singer tied the knot with Simi Osomo, his wife, at Ikoyi Baptist Church, Lagos, in August 2014.
Earlier this year, their marriage reportedly crashed.
Although Dr Sid has not released any statement about the break-up, Simi, on her part, confirmed their separation, adding that the marriage would soon be annulled.
In a statement, the mother of two claimed that some people were bent on defaming her character adding that she was not capable of attacking a man twice her size.
The statement read in part, “I have been consciously silent on this but as some people are out to defame my character and integrity with a fabrication of the facts, I am choosing to address it once and for all.
“The incredible false allegations recently written about our marriage ending due to me being violent towards someone twice my size and also of me preventing him from seeing his children (when he has clearly shared recent pictures with our daughter at my home) only depicts the laughable lengths at which some press are willing to go for click baits, and this needed to be cleared up. Such attempts will not be tolerated as I have stomached enough already…

Omotola@40:How to be sought after in a crowded marketplace

Delectable Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde turns 40 today. The role interpreter who started acting in 1995 does not have anything to prove to anyone at this stage in her career. Omotola was honoured in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world alongside Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Kate Middleton. She is undoubtedly one of the most sought after entertainment personalities in these climes.

The sexy mother of four has been able to stay relevant in a competitive entertainment space for more than two decades .Some actresses started out with Omotola, but they are no longer in the game. So what makes ‘Omosexy’ inimitable?

    OMOTOLA JALADE
    1. Authenticity

The actress who also doubles as a real estate doesn’t pretend to be what she is not. Omotola is an entertainer who is vocal about her convictions and true to herself.

She once said in an interview: “I think the government needs to wake up. They go around the world and they brag about Nollywood. Why would you brag about something you’re not developing? It’s not as if they are not doing anything but it’s not enough. They need to understand that Nollywood is a force in itself, it needs a ministry of its own.For a long time, Nollywood was the only thing Nigerians in the diaspora had to brag about Nigeria. We also have a problem in this country, we won’t allow ourselves to be great because we know each other but we support white people if they try to do something. If people in the diaspora say anything bad about Nigeria, Nigerians there use Nollywood movies to show that there are mansions in Nigeria.”. That’s how authentic Omotola is.

    1. Reinvent your brand

In 2004, Omotola and the likes of Richard Mofe Damijo, Stella Damascus, Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie, were banned for charging too much for movie appearances as a result of their popularity. Rather than coil into obscurity, Omotola found solace in her music talent. She released an album in 2005 titled ‘Gba’ produced by the late OJB Jezreel. The album featured Ruggedman, Pasto Goody Goody, Six O and others. Though music pundits are not convinced about her singing talent, but Omotola still reinvented herself during that turbulent period in her career.

    1. Be an aspirational brand

Truth be told every budding and rising actress aspires to be like Omotola. The Ondo born actress has managed to create magic out of balancing her work life and the home front. She is an aspirational brand, the actress every actress wants to be like.

Award winning actress and filmmaker , Omoni Oboli once said this about her: “She is the mother of four children and has managed to stay in shape, not only for the screen, but for her husband. She is truly an icon in the movie industry and in Nigeria as a whole. She has shown that with hard work, consistency, diligence, focus and a desire to achieve, there is nothing that can stop your rise to the top of your game”.

  • $40,000 missing from NFF coffers, Ex-President’s Sister fingered

A woman working as an intern in the Nigerian Football Federation has allegedly stolen $40,000 with the intention of returning the money after doubling it via voodoo.

The lady who allegedly stole the money and who is said to be a sister to an ex-president of the Nigeria Football Federation, picked four bundles of $10,000 and took to her heels leaving her handbag at the scene of the crime.

The lady whose name was not mentioned then handed the money to two men who assured her of doubling the money to $80,000 within 48 hours.
“Yes two middle aged men have been arrested in connection to the money theft at the NFF.
The men confessed to the Police of being money doublers and confirmed that the lady actually gave them the money to double for her”, a top source at the NFF said.

You would recall that the Nigeria football Federation is in huge debt as it continues to make plans and source for funds for the World Cup. And that only recently the Sports ministry said it needed N3billion ($8340000) to persecute next year’s World Cup.

You would also recall that this is not the first time money especially foreign currencies will go missing in the NFF. In March 2009, the accounts department of the NFF was broken into, and $200,000 was carted away from one of the drawers.

In 2012, $80,000 was alleged to have gone missing, but the NFF denied such ever happened. Ironically, the NFF is yet to issue an official statement since the latest incident happened.
