  • 5G, COVID-19 and a history without end – Okoh Aihe

    By Okoh Aihe

As it was in 1961 so it is in 2020 and so it will ever…

I am not one to complete the above doggerel verse, some kind of kindergarten psycho-babble; because its completion is trapped in a future that is not so inspiring and has very little to offer but which we are capable of mending and changing today should we have leaders that can break through the strictures of daunting but fleeting challenges.

As it was in 1961….Just when a pall of death seems to be blanketing the world with New York, the financial hub of the global community locked in painful throes of survival, the President of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump still found the presence of mind to deliver one of the most aspirational speeches of his administration. The speech without equivocation outlined his administration’s plan for 5G deployment in the days ahead. That is leadership. To stand in the nexus of disaster and still be able to give hope; carry the flame on behalf of the people for a glorious victory lap in the future.

As it was in 1961……5G came into the story as being the cause of the dreaded COVID-19 which is harvesting deaths across the globe. In the United Kingdom of all places 5G base stations were being burnt because the people sought to take physical action that could eliminate this painful reaper in an unripe field.

In Nigeria, there was an uproar. All of a sudden, sense and decency failed with some respected personalities even ready to swear on the grave of their ancestors that they met 5G on the way actually killing people. At this point nobody had remembered to consult the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to state its position on the matter. In moments of panic ideas are as useless as sawdust and as cold as ash whose fire died over a decade ago.

When the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, came on live programme on Channel TV network news in one of those evenings, he played for political correctness and further obfuscated issues. The people needed clear communications from the leadership and not equivocation and double speak.

As it was in 1961…. In these dire times, Trump displaying his usual showmanship and the kind of swagger associated with American leaders, braved the mood of the times to communicate the US plan for 5G. There was no mistaking the fact that he was spoiling for a fight should the position of the US be challenged. In fact, there had been a subtle fight all along, quite subterranean and politically disguised.

In a transcript released by the White House on April 12, 2020, titled: Remarks by President Trump on United States 5G Deployment, Trump who observed that 5G to him is the future, declared very confidently: “We cannot allow any other country to out-compete the United States in this powerful industry of the future. We are leading by so much in so many different industries of that type, and we just can’t let that happen. The race to 5G is a race America must win, and it’s a race, frankly, that our great companies are now involved in. We’ve given them the incentive they need. It’s a race that we will win.”

It will interest you here to know what 5G means to him and the way he presented it to the US public. In his words: “Secure 5G networks will absolutely be a vital link to America’s prosperity and national security in the 21st century.

“5G will be as much as 100 times faster than the current 4G cellular networks. It will transform the way our citizens work, learn, communicate, and travel. It will make American farms more productive, American manufacturing more competitive, and American healthcare better and more accessible. Basically, it covers almost everything, when you get right down to it. Pretty amazing.

“And just as 4G networks paved the way for smartphones and all of the exciting breakthroughs — they made possible so many things — this will be more secure and resilient. 5G networks will also create astonishing and really thrilling new opportunities for our people — opportunities that we’ve never even thought we had a possibility of looking at.”
Watching Trump make this declaration were Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) – just like the NCC in Nigeria – and some top members of his administration. Trump never for once directed any of these officials to do something instead he challenged them to rise to the new thinking of the United States. Trump didn’t position his presidency to lead the deployment of the 5G technology instead he openly fanned out the responsibility to the FCC and the private sector, the latter he described as being able to do a better job than the government.

Hear him: “In the United States, our approach is private-sector driven and private-sector led. The government doesn’t have to spend lots of money. According to some estimates, the wireless industry plans to invest $275 billion in 5G networks, creating 3 million American jobs quickly — very quickly — and adding $500 billion to our economy.”
Trump is about America, Americans and their world view which should define the view of the world, otherwise there could be some international hostility. Pai rubbed some needed balm into the President’s position when he summarized the President’s position in the opening lines of his response in the following manner:

“Mr. President, as you observed, America must win the race to 5G, the next generation of wireless connectivity. And this matters for two key reasons: “The first is national competitiveness. We want the good-paying jobs that develop and deploy 5G technologies — jobs that support some of the folks in this room — to be created here, in America. We want these technologies to give our economy a leg up as we compete against the rest of the world.

“The second reason U.S. leadership matters is that 5G will improve Americans’ lives in so many ways, from precision agriculture, to smart transportation networks, to telemedicine, and more. We want Americans to be the first to benefit from this new digital revolution while protecting our innovators and our citizens. And as you pointed out, Mr. President, we don’t want rural Americans to be left behind.”

Mind you these fellows are standing in the wreckage of COVID-19 to talk about their place in an unfolding monstrous technology.

    As it was in 1961..…

May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy made his epochal Man on the Moon speech to the joint session of the US Congress requesting for funds to enable America land a man on the moon by the end of the decade. At the time the Soviet Union were miles ahead by sending the Sputnik into space in 1957. The United States wanted to expand history in a battle the country must win by landing a man on the moon and returning him to base safely.

In what may look then as unusual futurism, Kennedy stated: “Space is open to us now; and our eagerness to share its meaning is not governed by the efforts of others. We go into space because whatever mankind must undertake, free men must fully share……First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.”

The President had given an order. Between 1960 and 1973 about $28bn (about $283bn in today’s inflation) was spent on the Apollo project with over 400, 000 people working behind the scene.

July 20, 1969, American landed Apollo 11 on the moon with a spaceship that carried Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins. Neil Armstrong became the first man ever to walk on the moon and he planted the American flag firmly as a totem of American adventurism and dominance in perpetuity.

I was in the primary school in 1969. Within the period, Nigeria, unable to manage promising independence, had graduated into a full scale war. We heard of Apollo 11 on radio as it was celebrated all over the world. But what was our response as a people? Answer. When people develop red eyes because of some infections, it was called Apollo, some kind of punishment for looking at the sky for too long a time. But the ailment was actually conjunctivitis, thanks to my Secondary school teachers at ACC, Irrua, years later.

    As it was in 1961……

Nigeria has not been sleeping concerning 5G. November 25, 2019, MTN had a public demonstration of three months trial of 5G technology. The excitement and aplomb that greeted that occasion gleefully celebrated by even government officials have nearly now been attenuated by feeble response of the Ministry of Communications and Digital economy to the controversy that trailed 5G’s role in the outbreak of COVID-19.

Thankfully, the Regulator came out with a very firm position declaring, “There is no correlation between 5G Technology and COVID-19. 5G is an advancement on todays’ 4G technology designed to transform the world positively.”

NCC also noted that “in line with our regulatory process with respect to technology neutrality, type-approval and other regulations are aimed at protecting the citizens and ensuring standards are complied with in the Nigerian telecoms industry; NCC ensures that adequate trial is conducted before a new technology is introduced.”
Interesting. But here is my observation. In 1969, when humans walked on the moon we shouted (Apollo) eye infection. 1n 2020, when a new wave of technology is taking over the world we are shouting Coronavirus.

This burlesque must stop. The NCC must dust up its books, study the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 afresh and plan for Nigeria post COVID-19.
5G is a monster of technology. Whoever controls it controls the future of the world. No doubt we can’t control it but we must harvest its advantages the way we harvested the advantages of mobile technology (GSM in our local understanding).

JUST IN: Conspiracy theories spark attacks on 5G masts

Coronavirus-inspired conspiracy theories have sparked dozens of attacks on telephone network masts in Britain and the Netherlands, with the perpetrators apparently believing 5G transmissions are the cause of the disease.

“In Britain, 20 masts belonging to telecommunications giant Vodafone have been set ablaze,’’ the firm’s chief in Britain Nick Jeffery said on Monday.

In the Netherlands there have been 16 attacks in recent weeks, at the weekend two masts in Amsterdam caught fire.

“There is absolutely no link between 5G and the coronavirus, there is no science-based evidence 5G is harmful to human health,’’ Jeffery wrote recently on careers platform LinkedIn.

Experts say the theory that 5G masts are responsible for the pandemic is “total madness”, while British cabinet minister Michael Gove called it “dangerous nonsense”.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte warned of the consequences of destroying masts.

“It’s life-threatening because it directly affects emergency calls,’’ he said.

Vodafone’s Jeffrey said that one of the British masts attacked provided mobile service to a hospital in the central English town of Birmingham.

“It’s heart-rending enough that families cannot be there at the bedside of loved ones who are critically ill.

“It’s even more upsetting that even the small solace of a phone or video call may now be denied them because of the selfish actions of a few deluded conspiracy theorists,’’ he said

According to National Health Service England director Stephen Powis, mobile phone networks are essential in the fight against the pandemic.

“I’m absolutely outraged and disgusted that people would be taking action against the infrastructure; we need to tackle this emergency,’’ he said.

  • Electrical institute wades into 5G argument

Electrical institute wades into 5G argument

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) says the 5G technology has potentials to accelerate global industrial and environmental advancement without health implications.

Mr Kings Adeyemi, the NIEEE’s National Chairman, said in a statement on Friday in Lagos that the evolution of every stage from 1G to the 4G technologies came with speculations and fears that never happened.

He stated that 5G technology has no link to COVID-19.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the acronym 5G stands for fifth generation of mobile networks.

Available statistics showed that the new mobile technologies were lunched every 10 years interval.

Adeyemi explained that the technicalities behind performance of Radio-Frequency Spectrum were the same, added that 5G was no exception and does not carry any health risk as being speculated.

The association chairman listed diseases rumoured in the various stages of the evolution of wireless networks signals, which never happened, to include cancer and brain tumours.

He said that 5G technologies did not have any health risk and that it had nothing to do with the current coronavirus pandemic.

Adeyemi added that countries that do not have 5G networks have also recorded COVID-19.

“5G signals are transmitted over the radio waves, not by sneezing or handshake or any other ways coronavirus can be transmitted.

“5G signals are not bio agent, hence, cannot be transmitted using transmitting station.

“As experts we cannot link coronavirus pandemic to 5G mobile communication network.

“There are cases of coronavirus spreading in countries that do not have 5G networks.

“While the spread of coronavirus is a threat to life and global economy, evolution of 5G will digitally transform healthcare, energy, finance services, transportation, entertainment, manufacturing, agriculture and supply-chain management sectors among others,’’ Adeyemi said.

He explained that the telecoms industry has several acronyms, which meant different things being mixed by some stakeholders.

He said that this led to the current misunderstandings and misinformation about the technology.

He said that making 5G a platform for many wireless technologies to co-exist would enhance technologies behind Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, smart city, smart home, self-driving cars, remote operations and machine learning among others.

“With the advancement of technology in the 20th century, humanity has been exposed to various forms or ionised and non-ionised forms, which enhanced fast operations.

Adeyemi said that all the health concerns about 5G network had no scientific base, and as such, should be disregarded.

He added that 5G “will usher in a new era that encouraged cross-sector cooperation and partnership due to cross-sector infrastructure sharing as a cost reduction option to enhance access connectivity’’.

According to him, in order to enhance fast roll-out of 5G services, electricity grid, oil pipelines, rail lines and highways will experience more fibre optic cables network.

“We strongly recommend that all our roads and rail networks be equipped with self-sustaining cable ducts so that our transportation system can become intelligent.

“This cross-sector fibre deployment is the fundamentals toward our smart cities dream.

“As professionals with authority in this subject, we stand by the side of conformance with globally approved radio communication regulations, standards, specifications and other guidelines developed for 5G networks,’’ he said.

He pledged the institute’s commitment to continue to support and advise government, organisations and educate the public on matters within its jurisdiction of electrical and electronic engineering profession.

NIEEE, established 36 years ago, has 28 national chapters with three broad sub-divisions of electrical engineering fields of Power Engineering, Telecoms and ICT as well as the Instrumentation and Control Sections.

  • The world will not be destroyed by fire – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa

A veteran journalist called me on April 4 to confirm if indeed the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) issued a statement advising government against approving the Fifth Generation Mobile Technology (5G) claiming it is dangerous and linked to the outbreak of Covid-19.

The NUJ also reportedly rejected the invitation of Chinese doctors in order to avoid: “… a situation where Nigerians will be used as a Guinea pig for any experiment” I told him it was an incredible and absurd story but that I will make enquiries.

I immediately called the NUJ National Secretary, Mr. Leman Shuaib Usman who confirmed the union issued the statement. I asked whether the NUJ had investigated its claims about 5G being dangerous to human beings, or made enquiries from the National Communication Commission (NCC) about it. The answer was negative. I then asked the basis on which the NUJ is officially rejecting the 5G which will have tremendous effects on journalism practice. There was none based on knowledge, investigation or research. Next, I asked the basis on which the NUJ made a link between the alleged installation of 5G masts in China and the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic; was it based on investigation, published research or verifiable information? It was none of these. Then I enquired why the NUJ was rejecting the invitation of Chinese doctors to help us fight Covid-19. Mr. Leman told me it was based on the observation that while Wuhan was the epicenter of Covid-19, it did not devastate Chinese cities like Shangai and Beijing, which confirmed the hypothesis that it was a controlled Chinese virus.

I told him that the logic of the NUJ leadership is that the Chinese should be condemned for being able to contain the virus, stopping it devastating more Chinese cities and decimating its population. I appealed that he reviewed the entire issue and if the NUJ had erred, it should have the courage to recall the statement.

The co-signatory was the NUJ National President, Mr. Christopher Isiguzo who I called next. I made my observations and told him that he and Mr. Leman owe Nigerian journalists the duty of withdrawing the embarrassing statement which from my discussions with them is based on rumours, conspiracy theories and false news. He listened and promised to call me the next day.

He did not, but sent me a statement by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) rejecting the invitation of the Chinese doctors as if that in itself justifies the NUJ leadership’s violation of the ethics of journalism. Every rookie journalist is taught that while comments or opinions are free, facts are sacred; that a journalist must report only facts and if in doubt, spike the report or the portion he cannot confirm.

The NUJ President followed this up on Wednesday by sending me a video of the self-serving rantings of a transactional pastor whose commercialization of God’s words according to Forbes statistics, has earned him a hefty $30-$50 million profit. The pastor who could not even define what theory is, could be heard in his usual sophistry, claiming that Covid-19 is a scam; the figment of human imagination and that what is killing people is the 5G technology not any virus. It is tragic the depths people can go in order to deceive and profit off peoples’ lives.

The NMA appears ill-informed about the Chinese doctors whom it assumes are being employed by the Nigerian government. Based on this misinformation, it argues there are unemployed Nigerian doctors, and implied that the money government is going to pay the Chinese doctors can be better utilized providing necessary medical equipment and facilities . However, the verifiable information is that these doctors are being brought in by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) as part of its corporate social responsibility. They are to spend one month in the country, and to share experiences with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and not to practice medicine in Nigeria.

The fact is, given the titanic battle China waged against Covid-19, Chinese doctors are some of the most experienced in fighting the virus, and a drowning man is not interested whether his rescuer is Nigerian, Chinese, Yemeni or Dutch.

The NMA went low when it wrote that: “The spike in cases and the death toll from COVID-19 in Italy coincided with the arrival of the Chinese in the guise of offering assistance.” This cynical and unsubstantiated claim gives the impression that Chinese doctors are going around the world spreading the virus and deliberately infecting non-Chinese. In this, the NMA without any empirical evidence or facts, is accusing its Chinese counterparts of betraying the physicians global ethical code (The Hippocratic Oath) which is basically, to respect and save human lives.

The rejection of 5G or the false claim that it is the source of the Coronavirus is like people rejecting telephone on the basis that it is the cause of small pox.

The 5G network is basically an improvement on the high-speed mobile internet (4G) which was an improvement on the voice and mobile data (3) itself an advancement on the Digital Voice (2G) and the Analogue Voice (1G) In rolling out 5G which some countries like South Korea, Britain, United States, Switzerland, Finland and Germany have done, the approving authorities put into consideration basic issues like health, security, labour, commercial and social implications.

The 5G will not be decided by rancorous debates, rumours or fake news. It is the logic of science, the pull of technology, demands of knowledge and commerce and the inevitability of an idea whose time has come. It should be clear to all that 5G is global and not a Chinese invention.

Bodies like the NUJ and NMA need to start thinking and discussing the likely implications of 5G on their members. Otherwise, it would be like the introduction of the internet when the media was dragged by the ears into the new world. Many media organisations which could not adapt, died while all parts including reportorial, sub-editing, photography and production underwent fundamental transformation.

Many of the purveyors of fake news on Covid-19 and 5G are pathetic victims of imperialist propaganda; mere repeater stations of foreign half-truths and falsehood. Africans and the underdeveloped world should focus on what benefits their people and how they can also contribute to human development and not be cheerleaders at the turf battles for global leadership. They should not become disciples of Donald Trump, the archangel of vicious agitation, propaganda and fake news.

I am convinced that this is a world without end, but if creation were to be destroyed as in Biblical times, it will not be by water, fire or virus; it will be fake news the next time.

JUST IN: WHO breaks silence on COVID-19, 5G controversy

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that viruses cannot travel on radio waves or mobile networks, saying COVID-19 is a respiratory disease.

WHO through a statement on Friday, debunked the myth, adding that COVID-19 was spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks.

“People can also be infected by touching a contaminated surface and then their eyes, mouth or nose,” it said.

WHO added that COVID-19 was spreading in many countries that did not have 5G mobile networks.

It also said being infected with the new Coronavirus did not mean that the person would be infected with the virus forever, adding that people recovered from the disease.

“Most COVID-19 infected persons can recover and eliminate the virus from their bodies.

“If you are infected by the disease, make sure you treat your symptoms.

“If you have cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early, but call your health facility by telephone first.

“Most patients recover thanks to supportive care,” WHO said.

It added that exposure to the sun or to temperatures higher than 25C degrees would not prevent COVID-19.

“You can be infected with COVID-19, no matter how sunny or hot the weather is. Countries with hot weather have reported cases of COVID-19,” the organisation noted.

It said to be protected from the virus, people should ensure frequent and thorough hand washing and avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose.

  • COVID-19: NCC refutes 5G deployment insinuations

COVID-19: NCC refutes 5G deployment insinuations

The ongoing laying of fibre optic cables and the deployment of other telecoms equipment by mobile network operators (MNOs) across Lagos and other states is entirely to expand their networks infrastructure across the country to provide more efficient services to the consumers, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, has said.

Danbatta made this clarification in response to insinuations being spread by some individuals through viral video, audio and textual contents on social media, where they wrongly claim that some ongoing digging/excavation activities and laying of fibre optic cables by MNOs in Lagos and in some other states are connected to 5G equipment deployments.

According to Danbatta, “As we speak, any information suggesting or claiming that the equipment being deployed by the network operators are 5G equipment is purely misinformation deliberately orchestrated by individuals bent on creating ill-feelings in the industry.”

The EVC called on Nigerians to disregard such unfounded and ill-motivated information in its entirety regardless of whoever, no matter how highly-placed or lowly-placed, is making the insinuation.

“As the telecoms regulator, we enjoin Nigerians to get accurate information from us rather than relying on information emanating on social media by some individuals out of ignorance to misinform our people,” Danbatta said.

Setting the record straight, Danbatta said the ongoing digging and fibre optic cable laying by some operators are in accordance with agreements reached during meetings by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami and Management of the NCC with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Executive Governor of Ekiti State in January 2020, during which the Forum gave its commitment to allow the network operators expand their networks by granting right of way (RoW) approvals for telecommunications infrastructure expansion, unhindered, across their states. This will significantly reduce drop calls and improve networks performance of the operating companies.

“The Governors’ Forum agreed to allow the telecoms operators to expand their networks by granting the telecoms operators necessary permits, which they had been having difficulties in getting before now. This will help them expand their networks for more effective service delivery to Nigerians. That is exactly what was or is ongoing in Lagos and in other states. It is to improve their networks infrastructure,” he said.

While emphasising that the earth-digging and cable laying activities by the operators has nothing to do with 5G deployment, the NCC boss stated that continuous network expansion is a requirement from the operators for efficient service delivery on their networks, as this helps to expand their network capacity and robustness.

Danbatta, however, re-emphasised that the Commission has not commenced any licensing process for 5G, saying what the Commission had carried out was a 5G trial for three months, during which it will be able to certify its safety to end users and guarantee its desirability for deployment in the economy.

“In line with our regulatory process with respect to technology-neutrality, type-approval and other regulations aimed at protecting the citizens and ensuring standards are complied with in the Nigerian telecoms industry, NCC ensures that adequate trial is conducted before a new technology is introduced. This is essentially to ensure public safety. This is a priority for us at NCC. Similar trials were carried out by NCC on earlier technologies that we use today, ranging from 2G, 3G and 4G,” Danbatta added.

  • Nigerian pastors in war of words over labelling of Covid-19, 5G as antiChrist [Videos]

From allegations to counter allegations, some highly revered pastors in Nigeria have intensified an ongoing war of words on the alleged labelling of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) as an Antichrist plan.

The battle among the clerics which is now widespread in the social media started after Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Believers Love World, popularly known as Christ Embassy, shared a revelation claiming the virus was created to popularize the 5G network which is gradually gaining attention across the world.

First to disagree with Oyakhilome was Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre.

Ashimolowo held that there was no correlation between 5G and end-time signs, Pastor Ashimolowo cautioned Christians not to join leaders in promoting the conspiracy theories.

Also speaking against the Oyakhilome’s revelation, Sam Adeyemi, the senior pastor of the Daystar Christian Centre, has warned leaders to stop giving extreme interpretations to the Coronavirus epidemic ravaging the world.

He debunked Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s claim of the government shutting down churches to install the 5G network.

But making reference to 1918, Adeyemi said churches, mosques, schools and markets were also shut in Nigeria during the influenza pandemic and it was not anti-Christ.

He urged leaders to use the opportunities in every crisis, and not to project extreme interpretation that causes fear to their followers.

Meanwhile, Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries has cautioned those criticizing Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Believers Love World, popularly known as Christ Embassy, for his revelation on 5G network and Coronavirus.

Suleman stated that rather than attack Oyakhilome for his claim, critics should assert their counter claim or remain quiet.
Apostle Suleman in a tweet wrote: “I see many people online attacking pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

“If you have contrary opinion, state it clearly so you can be listened to or keep quiet..insults,name-calling,character assassination are all proofs that you have nothing to say.”

  • COVID-19: FG reacts to Oyakhilome’s claims on 5G, lockdown of Lagos, Ogun, Abuja

The Federal Government has described comment made by founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome that the lockdown of Lagos and Abuja was to allow government secretly install 5G and not for Coronavirus, as disheartening.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Oyakhilome had in a TV interview said “5G is the reason the Federal Government has to lockdown Abuja and Lagos so the 5G could be installed. And there are other cities planned for and as I said before, what killed people in Wuhan, China is not the virus, it was the 5G. If you say it is not, tell us how you discovered yours.”

But the National Orientation Agency, NOA, berated Pastor Oyakhilome for his comment, saying it was unfortunate.

NOA’s spokesman, Paul Ogenyi said Oyakhilome’s claim that the lockdown ordered by the Federal Government in Lagos and Abuja was a mere ruse to lay fibre optic cables in preparation for the launch of 5G technology, was disheartening.

Ogenyi said it was disheartening that while Pope Francis and other respected clerics worldwide were educating their followers on measures to fight COVID-19, Oyakhilome and his ilk were spreading speculations thereby misinforming the public.

“It is very unfortunate that in this sensitive time some of our religious leaders are beginning to behave like they are uninformed. The Vatican has issued a directive that there should be no gatherings. The same has happened in Saudi Arabia.

“Nigeria has witnessed five deaths and many infections. So, I appeal to religious leaders to seek information if they are not sure of the facts.

“I am actually surprised that Pastor Oyakhilome is making this statement despite repeated clarifications by the Nigerian Communications Commission that 5G has nothing to do with coronavirus.

“Is he saying the lockdown in the US and China is also because they want to lay 5G cables? If that is what he said then he is not informed and he needs to be educated. Nigeria needs to come together to fight this pandemic. It is real and we must fight it. If this kind of information continues to be disseminated, we will be the worse for it,” he lamented.

  • Medical researcher speaks on link between 5G, COVID-19

Medical researcher speaks on link between 5G, COVID-19

Dr Bamidele Iwalokun, a medical researcher on Tuesday in Lagos described the on-going link between 5G and the COVID-19 pandemic as a fallacy that should be disregarded by the public.

Iwalokun, a Deputy Director in the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), told the News Agency of Nigeria that the rumour was capable of affecting the ongoing war against the virus.

There have been several claims on the social media linking 5G as the major cause of the Coronavirus pandemic ravishing the globe.

He said: ”5G is the fifth generation wire communications technologies to support cellular data networks, involving mobile phones, laptops and others which was launched in 2019.

“This is an upgrade of 4G presently in use in Nigeria which means high frequency of radio wave in Mega to Giga Hertz and faster speed of data transmission in megabit to gigabit compared to 4G.

“In terms of health risks, 5G belongs to the family of Radio waves with no proven evidence of harmful effects in human or DNA mutation effects in viruses including Coronavirus.

“It is the other electromagnetic spectrum of waves that have been proven to be harmful to human health.

“Therefore, it is an unimaginable fallacy to link the latest 5G technology to SARS COV-2 evolution, transmission and pandemic.

“The 5G COVID-19 rumour is a misconception capable of disabling the current national and regional fights against COVID-19 pandemic.”

Iwalokun who is of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in NIMR, urged Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and other health agencies leading the war against the virus, to refute the claims scientific terms.

“This is a serious misinformation that should not be allowed to spread through any media in Nigeria.”

“Risk communication and community engagement response pillar of NCDC and other first responder agencies in the country should be well coordinated and strategised to debunk this rumour and prevent it to thrive.

“Over 20 years of research have been carried by experts all over the world and the World Health Organisation through the Mobile and Wireless Forum on the effect of radio waves and human health.

“Findings from these studies have revealed no serious adverse effects in humans,” he said.

Theories linking 5G technology to Coronavirus untrue — ALTON

The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) says there is no iota of truth in the theories linking 5G technology to the cause of coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Gbenga Adebayo, the President of ALTON made this known in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

He explained that there were many parts of the world without 5G coverage, yet affected by the virus.

Adebayo said that all generations of wireless network technology (5G, 4G, 3G, 2G & 1G) mobile data were transmitted over radio waves, including smart metres, TV, radio transmitters, radar and satellite communications.

“Most modern medical laboratory equipment use radio waves, some use nuclear radiation but they are used within guidelines.

“We dare say that every medication has recommended dosage.

“Even too much food and drinks can become injurious to health.

“This is basically the same principle on which radio waves operate,’’ ALTON president said.

He re-emphasised that several studies have been carried out, even before the 5G emergence, indicating that microwave emissions from these infrastructures have no harmful effect on human health.

Adebayo noted that electromagnetic fields on masts and towers were so insignificant when compared to microwave, television set and computers been used at home.

He assured the general public that “the theories being spread about 5G on social media and mainstream media are baseless and not grounded on accepted scientific theory.

“The telecoms industry is working around the clock to keep vital health, education, emergency services online, businesses running, friends and families connected.

“It is deplorable that critical communications infrastructure is being attacked in some places, based on outright mistrust.

“We urge everyone to trust the health authorities and rest assured that communications technology is safe.

“There is no link between 5G and COVID-19,’’ Adebayo said.

According to him, the association aligns with the claims by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy that the 5G technology has not been licensed in Nigeria.

“It is necessary to bear in mind that telecommunication standards are prescribed for use by the relevant International Regulatory Agencies.’’

Adebayo said 5G licence could only be issued after comprehensive tests must have been carried out to ensure particularly that all approved standards are safe for the human environment and health.

“Telecommunications masts and towers in Nigeria are safe and their emissions not harmful to human health.

“They are not only regulated in line with international regulatory guidelines but also by the Nigerian Communications Commission,’’ he said.
