  • AAC governorship candidate frowns at suspension of 3 lawmakers

AAC governorship candidate frowns at suspension of 3 lawmakers

Dr Udoh Oberaifo, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has frowned at the suspension of three lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Oberaifo is the candidate of the AAC for the Sept. 21, governorship election in the State.

The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, had on Monday,  suspended the three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal officer.

The three suspended lawmakers are: Mr Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo 11), Bright Iyamu (PDP Orihonmwon South) and Adeh Isibor (Esan North East 1).

Addressing newsmen in Benin, Oberaifo described the suspension of the  lawmakers as illegal and unconstitutional.

According to him, the speaker lacked the legal power and right to suspend a lawmaker democratically elected by the people.

“So what will now happen to their constituents that they represent.”

He said that the action of the speaker clearly infringed on the rights of the good people of Edo, the suspended members and their constituents.

“Our courts have consistently held that disciplinary powers of legislative houses like Edo state house of assembly do not extend to suspension.

”The court of appeal in Bauchi  State House of Assembly & ORS vs. Guyaba,  agreed with the trial court in holding that the suspension of a then house of assembly member, Hon. Gubaya for three months was illegal.

“Recently, the court also took a similar view in the case of Akinribido vs Ondo State House of Assembly.

”The point I wish to state here is that the clear malicious suspension of these members of the Edo house of assembly for whatever reasons by the speaker, is laughable, unjustifiable, illegal and clearly unconstitutional.

“It clearly shows the directionless lawmaking powers, offside decision making of the PDP led house of assembly, and lack of respect for democratic institutions,” he said.

Oberaifo urged the speaker to recall the suspended members in line with clear court precedents in similar matters.

According to him, the above shows that Edo people can no longer continue with the PDP governance and law making in the State.

He urged the people to vote for the AAC as a better alternative and for credible governance.

  • Ondo 2024: Ajayi picks AAC’s gubernatorial ticket

Ondo 2024: Ajayi picks AAC’s gubernatorial ticket

Mr Adekunle Ajayi on Saturday emerged as the governorship candidate  of the African Action Congress (AAC) for the Nov. 16 election in Ondo State.

Ajayi became victorious through affirmation by all 35 delegates of the party from the 18 local government areas of the state.

The consensus mode of the primary was monitored by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Comrade Olugbenga Arinkoluwa, who served as the 2024 AAC Governorship Election Committee Chair, said the party decided to pick Ajayi as its candidate after several meetings, believing he would represent the party well in the election.

Arinkoluwa explained that AAC is a party comprising people of intelligence, vision, and mission, adding that Ajayi would be cerebral enough to turn misfortune into fortune if elected as the next governor of the state.

“We did not ask him to bring money, but we decided that the person with vision, mission, and intelligence would be our candidate so that when he gets there as the governor, he would not have excuses to steal public money.

“He is not the type that will steal the commonwealth of the people to pay bank loans. He didn’t borrow any money and did not commit one naira to the party,” he stated.

In his acceptance speech, the AAC candidate said the contest was a long-time challenge that he needed to take up to correct the mismanagement of politics, the economy, and social development by insincere politicians in the state.

“Societal building has to do with how much you are involved, not age. Most of the special advisers have no thinking capacity for the development of the state.

“At the level of youth, most of us are deeply involved, from the level of student movement to people movement.

“Apart from being deeply involved, we also have intellectuals to build and defend agriculture and the environmental status of the state. With the level of understanding in the state, we think it is time to take center stage, not the side or back stage, for both growth and development of the state.

“We are going to reject all forms of neoliberalism policies in this state. We are not going to stand and watch as all raw materials of the state move to other climes,” he stated.

According to him, if elected governor, “I will advance what Pa Adekunle Ajasin did in building companies, industries to massively reduce unemployment.

Ajayi, a Sahara media correspondent, said that he would not transfer public funds to private hands if elected as governor, adding that he would make the state attractive so that doctors would not go abroad.

“We will have our own refinery.

“We are not just going to build hospitals but an advanced healthcare system. A situation where we will have viable and world-standard primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare systems,” he said.

  • AAC candidate condemns impeachment of Shaibu

AAC candidate condemns impeachment of Shaibu

Dr. Udoh Oberaifo, the Gubernatorial Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), on Monday, condemned in strong terms the impeachment of deputy governor Philip Shaibu by the Edo House of Assembly.

Shaibu was impeached on Monday for “revealing government secrets”. He has been replaced by Marvellous Godwins Omobayo as the new deputy governor.

In a statement in Benin, Oberaifo said regardless of the charges levelled against Shaibu, due process was not followed.

Oberaifo who noted that Shaibu was not given a fair hearing and described the impeachment as a blatant disregard of the principles of justice.

“Of particular concern is the fact that the impeachment proceeded despite a pending case filed by the deputy governor at the Federal High court.

“This legal action should have warranted a status quo, yet the impeachment was carried out regardless, casting doubts on the motives behind the hurried proceedings,” he said .

The AAC candidate raised the alarm over the connection between the Labour Party (LP) and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state .

He alleged that the new deputy governor was a card-carrying member of LP, and was yet to resign his membership as at the time he was sworn in.

“This action is in clear violation of the Electoral Act 2022 and it underscores the connivance between the LP and PDP to consolidate power,” he added.

He condemned the display of political maneuvering and warned against  godfatherism that has permeated Edo politics.

He urges the people of Edo state to reject the PDP and LP at the polls, come September 2024, and embrace the AAC as a viable alternative.

Oberaifo called on all Edo people to rally behind the AAC, embrace its programmes, visions, and manifestos, and cast their votes for him as the next governor of the state in September.

  • 2023 elections: Peter Obi not alternative Nigeria needs – AAC Chieftain

2023 elections: Peter Obi not alternative Nigeria needs – AAC Chieftain

Comrade Ina Okopi-Aqu, National Secretary of the African Action Congress (AAC) has averred that the candidate of the Labour Party for the forthcoming presidential election, Mr Peter Obi is not the alternative Nigeria needs.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Comrade Okopi-Aqu stated this on Saturday at a colloquium organised to assess the 2023 presidential election campaigns.

According to Okopi-Aqu, Mr Obi was not different from the old political stock, coming from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), adding that the AAC presidential candidate, Comrade Omoyele Sowore is a better option.

“The alternative we seek in Nigeria, if it is the PDP or Labour Party, then we do not have an alternative yet. Nigeria needs an alternative that is different from the PDP, the Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC). So, we want Nigerians to look again at what is the alternative,” the AAC National Secretary said.

However, Diran Onifade, Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, who was present at the event held virtually via Zoom, countered the AAC Scribe, stressing that the Labour Party presidential candidate appeals to Nigerians in terms of expectation.

Onifade argued that the Labour Party is a special purpose vehicle for the kind of leadership Nigerians have been yearning for, adding that the ideas of Mr Peter Obi and his record of service resonate with the people of Nigeria.

“Nigerians have constituted themselves as the structure for the Labour Party because the ideas of our presidential candidate and his records of service resonate with Nigerians.

“At the beginning, it didn’t look like that. The 2023 presidential election was looking like another contest between the two big parties. That was the kind of mindset we entered the election with.

“We did not take into consideration the fact that right there among the populace there was something that was building up that politicians were not ready for.

“They knew about the third force. When the process of the election started, the real third force emerged from the streets of Nigeria. That is the wave we are riding on,” Onifade said.

  • 2023 elections: PRP denounces reported alliance with AAC

2023 elections: PRP denounces reported alliance with AAC

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has said that the party is not in alliance with the African Action Congress (AAC).

This was stated in a statement signed  by the party’s  Acting Assistant National Publicity Secretary, Mr Muhammed Ishaq, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

“The attention of the PRP has been drawn to a comedy orchestrated and acted by the presidential candidate of the AAC, Mr Omoyele Sowore, in connivance with some elements that we are in political alliance with AAC which is far from the truth” he said.

“We describe the purported mass mobilisation congress which the AAC claimed to have held in collaboration with our party as a  comedy which  deserves no attention of any  right thinking citizens.

“The public should note that  PRP has debunked several times that it is not into any alliance with AAC or its presidential candidate,.”

Ishaq further said that AAC was still living in illusion that it was in alliance with PRP, “a fantasy  that is never in touch with  reality”.

“We  would like to use this medium to reiterate the fact that at no time has the PRP concluded an alliance with any candidate or any other political party, particularly the AAC.”

He also said that the PRP was taking steps to legally deal with the persons who were hiding behind the its name to commit fraud.

A newspaper had on Jan. 16, reported that Sowere attended “a massive AAC, PRP Town Hall in Kano.

Sowere was at the event, quoted as saying that “our combination is the most powerful kinetic combination in the history of Nigeria”.

  • SOWORE: Crisis rocks AAC as party expels presidential candidate

SOWORE: Crisis rocks AAC as party expels presidential candidate

The presidential candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has been expelled by the party for allegedly hoodwinking the public and collecting money from unsuspecting victims.

This was made known in a statement signed by the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Leonard Nzenwa, and made available to journalists in Abuja.

Leonard further stated that since June 02, 2022, the ‘expelled’ Omoyele Sowere, allegedly commenced working with some forces within and outside the party with the aim to disarray the party, stating that, “it wouldn’t see the light of the day even as the party remains civil, responsible and law-abiding.”

Our next push is to ensure that his name is delisted as our great party’s National Chairman

According to him, “Many mistook this elevated approach of ours as being weak and wondered why we did not adopt the crude and thuggish mannerism of the perpetual lawbreaker and out-of-favour character that cyberstalk everybody in the country for cheap popularity and monetary gains.

“Fact is, his expulsion from the party with his ills is for this same reason and will do the party no good to embrace such despicable behaviour from an individual that nobody would want to relate with.

“In our resolve, therefore, to remain civil and law-abiding in the face of the onslaught from enemies of our great party, we set out first during this period to establish the genuineness of the court judgment which he claimed gave him victory which was a big lie.

“The second thing we did was to counter him and his troop legitimately in court which is still ongoing, and they are literally scampering for safety now!

“Following from above we now directed effort at ensuring that his name was removed as our great party’s presidential candidate, this we also achieved.

“Our next push is to ensure that his name is delisted as our great party’s National Chairman and transmit all our candidates that emerged from our nationwide primaries. We are not relenting on this end.

“All Leaders and State Chairmen are therefore directed to be on high alert as they can be called upon at any time. Finally, we wish to thank all party faithful(s) for their prayers and support”, Leonard added.
