  • 2023: PDP, AAC demand credible polls as CAN advises candidates on what to do

2023: PDP, AAC demand credible polls as CAN advises candidates on what to do

Both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Action Congress (AAC) have advised the Federal Government to take practical steps to guarantee the conduct of free, fair and transparent general elections in 2023.

This is even as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised all candidates of political parties seeking positions in the 2023 general elections to be sensitive to issues affecting the country and address them.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the PDP’s advice to the Federal Government was contained in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, to mark the 2022 Democracy Day.

Ologunagba said that more than ever before, Nigerians were now determined to fully entrench the democratic demands of credible elections, which is at the core of the Democracy Day celebration.

He said the party demanded that in 2023 security agencies and thugs should not be used to suppress voters, in addition to guaranteeing that only votes cast at the polling units were transmitted and declared

He said that June 12 also embodies the struggle by Nigerians against corrupt, suppressive and dictatorial forces; against lawless, insensitive, anti-people and terrorism, injustice, high-handedness, recklessness and incurable impunity.

He condemned all forms of acts against substance, value and quintessence of June 12 Democracy Day; the democratic principles of Constitutional Order, freedom, justice, fairness and equity as well as the much-desired national cohesion and tolerance which Chief MKO Abiola personified and died for.

Ologunagba said that the PDP cautioned against abuse of process, violation of human rights, nepotism, electoral manipulations, stifling of freedom of speech, promotion of violence; pattern of the dark era of military dictatorship in our country, which Chief MKO Abiola fought against.

He also urged Nigerians to use the occasion of the June 12 to reaffirm their determination in the 2023 general elections.

“Our party urges all leaders across the country to reflect on the essence of June 12 in all their activities so as to build a nation guided by the democratic principles of the Rule of Law, mutual respect and unity of purpose.”

“The PDP prays for the nation and wishes Nigerians a successful Democracy Day Celebration,” he said.

Broadcast: AAC urges Buhari to ensure credible election promise

Meanwhile, Mr James Adeshina, the Governorship Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Lagos State, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in 2023 as promised in the national broadcast.

Adeshina made this appeal in an interview on Sunday in Lagos while reacting to Buhari’s Democracy Day broadcast after Buhari in the broadcast assured Nigerians of his resolve to ensure free, fair and credible 2023 elections and peaceful transition.

Adeshina, who is the immediate past chairman of AAC in Lagos also urged the President to redouble efforts toward improving the nation’s security before the 2023 general elections.

“The President should keep to his promise of ensuring a free, fair and credible election along with INEC by providing the necessary security for the electorate before, during and after the elections.

“What we currently see around us shows that more needed to be done in the area of security if the President’s promised credible election is anything to write home about,” he said.

According to him, credibility of elections in a country with security challenge is largely dependent on building confidence in people of their security and safety when they go out to cast their votes.

“The most important factor now is security of voters, electoral officers and materials. So, if the President’s promise would be achieved, more have to be done in the area of security,” he said.

Adeshina, also a former Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Lagos State, said that June 12 remains a special day to remember the pioneer and hero of democracy in Nigeria, the late Chief MKO Abiola.

He described Abiola as a nationalist leader that gave hope to an ordinary Nigerian of a better living “but unfortunately he was unable to lead us to the promised land.”

Adeshina said that there was the need for current political leaders to follow the path of Chief M.K.O Abiola “in ensuring that democracy stands and our people can benefits the dividends our democracy”.

“2023 is another opportunity for us to choose a leader with a golden heart like Chief M.K.O Abiola to lead us as Nigeria’s President.

“Let us go to various INEC offices at the local government and state levels to register for our PVCs.

“The only power a common man like us have to effect a good change is to massively exercise our right to vote during election,” Adeshina said.

Adeshina said that he would ensure massive employment through improved economy, free education for all and security of lives and property if elected the governor of Lagos State.

2023: CAN tasks parties’ flagbearers on issues affecting Nigerians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised all candidates of political parties seeking positions in 2023 general elections to be sensitive to issues affecting the country and address them.

The CAN President, Rev. Samson Supo Ayokunle, gave the advice on Sunday at an Inter-Denominational Church Service to mark 2022 Democracy Day in Abuja, with the theme: “ More than Conquerors”.

Ayokunle was represented by the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, who is also the President and Founder of The Sword of The Spirit Ministries International.

Ayokunle, in the sermon titled “Building a prosperous and united Nigeria”, with the Bible text taken from 2 Sam. 23:3, called on political leaders, particularly those contesting for 2023 elections to pay attention to the pains, concerns, apprehensions of citizens and address them.

He said that the country needed leaders who are sensitive to issues, making bold, fair and just decisions that bring in Nigeria together as one, united nation.

“The scripture says he that those that rule over men must be justice, ruling in the fair of God.

“We urge our politicians, those seeking to rule us come 2023 in the name of God Almighty, please see to it that in your plans, in your decisions, your utterances, your campaign, bring us together as one nation.

“You can rule if there is a nation. If there is no nation or the nation is at war, you cannot rule. Please in your plans, in your decisions, in your campaigns, in your utterances, close the fault lines and do not make them wider.

“This is the wise counsel of the church because we care for this nation, Nigeria.

“Righteousness exalts a nation and if there is no justice, if there is no equity, if there is no fairness, there is no righteousness,” he said.

Ayokunle said that leaders to be elected in 2023 must handle the issue of ethnicity and religion with wisdom and sensitivity.

“We want a nation where everyone is treated fairly, equally, no matter the tribe or the ethnic or whatever parts of the nation you come from. A nation where every Nigerian can call my nation.

“We want our leaders to take decisions that we promote a sense of belonging to bring all Nigerians together from the East, West, North, South, from every part to see Nigeria as their own. This needs to be handled.

“Religion has become a major issue in our national political life. And our politicians need to handle this in a very, very wise, bold and sensitive way.

“To bring Nigerians together, to let Nigerians know that irrespective of your faith, you can practice your faith without fear or molestation in any part of the nation Where you find yourself.

“This is a cry of the church and the leaders of the church are speaking out boldly, very clearly, so that we can handle this situation as it should be handled.”

Ayokunle therefore urged the candidates to look into issues of corruption, insecurity, increasing debt, brain drain in the health sector and challenges facing the education sector.

“Across the nation among the youths in the restlessness to cause trouble. This has to be addressed.

“The education system is in shambles. Public universities are been closed for months and this needs to be addressed decisively.

“Nigerians believe that we have enough money to make our universities a pride, not only to this nation but to the world as they used to be.

“If you look at the health system. The health system has nothing for the people. Our health professionals are frustrated already.

“The doctors that we spent so much money to educate and to raise are migrating in droves to other worlds and back at home quacks are filling the gaps and our people are paying very dearly. This too needs be addressed.”

Ayokunle also warned political parties against flying a Muslim-Muslim ticket for 2023 presidential election, saying it will do Nigeria no good.

He said that every part of Nigeria and religion has competent people with potential to rule the country.

He said that balancing the ticket from both divide of religion would help to reduce the tension in the country, give everybody a sense of belonging, promote peaceful and mutual coexistence without stress.

“While we congratulate the winners for the presidential primaries, we urge them to pay attention to this cry from the church. It is important.

“Please do not try a Muslim-Muslim ticket; is an invitation to chaos. It will not fly. It will set the nation against each other,” he said.

He, however, called on millions of Christians in every part of the nation to know that the candidates produced by all political parties belong to all, both Muslim and Christians.

“We don’t have any quarel with that, they are our brothers. We have been working together to build a united nation, but please do not alienate the church.

“If you choose to heed our call, the Nigerian electorate at the polls, the Nigeria populace will trust you with the presidency and we will build one, united and prosperous nation,” the CAN president said.

He, however, prayed for the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians, peace of the country and end to violence, insurgency and kidnapping in the country.

The second bible reading Romance 8:31- 39 was read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Femi Gbajabiamila, who was represented by the House of Rep. Deputy Chief Whip, Nkiruka Onyejeocha.

The first and second reeditions were taken by the Non-Denominational Christian Choir Association of Nigeria (NCCN) and ECWA Garki Church, Council Choir, respective.

2023: Sowore begs Nigerians to vote for African Action Congress

Mr Omoyele Sowore, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), on Saturday appealed to Nigerians to vote for his party in the 2023 general elections.

Sowore, the publisher of the SaharaReporters, made the plea in Akure while speaking with newsmen, amid a resounding welcome by party faithful.

According to him, Nigerians, most especially the youths, need to challenge those seeking political office ahead of 2023 general elections.

“This is the right time to challenge those in power and bring those with fresh blood, ideas and initiatives that can change the narratives for Nigeria.

“The time for the nation to work for Nigerians has also arrived.

“Other political parties are even going into extinction and we would help to consign them into the dustbin of history as soon as possible.

“For the people of Ondo State, and those who have not heard, I, Omoyele Sowore is going to be the next President of Nigeria,” he said.

The AAC presidential aspirant expressed happiness that he was received by supporters and mammoth crowd from his country home, Kiribo, in Ese-Odo Local Government area of the state.

He also described his incarceration by the Department of State Services (DSS) as “a complete waste of time.”

Sowore said he was stronger and bolder, now that he has been released to move around the country.

The AAC presidential aspirant said he would continue to speak against injustice.

  • 2023: AAC declares nomination forms free

2023: AAC declares nomination forms free

The African Action Congress (AAC) has declared its expression of interest and nomination forms for all elective positions in the 2023 general elections free.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday.

He said the decision to declare the forms free was taken by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at its meeting held on April 24.

The decision, according to him, was part of efforts to ensure that all Nigerians have the opportunity to vie for elective positions on the AAC platform.

The development came a few days after the All Progressives Congress (APC) pegged the nomination and expression of interest forms for presidential aspirants at N100 million and N50 million for their governorship counterparts.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier fixed the nomination form and expression of interest forms for its aspirants at N40 million and N20 million for individuals vying for the governorship tickets under its platform.

The statement read: “The African Action Congress seized this medium to announce to members of the party and the general public its resolution reached at its meeting of April 24, 2022, one of which is to declare free for all positions, the expression of interest and nomination forms.

“With a maddening inflation rate of 18 percent, unemployment at 33.3 percent, youth unemployment at 53.4 percent, underemployment at 51 percent, Dollar to Naira exchange rate at 599 Naira to 1 Dollar, hike in electricity and other tariffs, workers’ minimum wage of N30,000 which in reality is barely paid, it is near impossible to find brilliant, financially upright and competent change-seeking Nigerians who would pay exorbitant and illegal fees such as the APC’s and PDP’s, just so as to contest in an election.

“As the (Muhammadu) Buhari regime has priced education, quality healthcare and other social services from the reach of the poor, it is clearer now more than ever, that it has priced participatory democracy so far from the reach of genuine change-seeking but poor people.

“The downward review from the AAC NWC, to the point of declaring free for all positions, came after a clinical assessment of the economic woes caused by the unfortunate Buhari regime.”

  • 2023 Elections: Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore enters presidential race

2023 Elections: Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore enters presidential race

Sahara Reporters publisher and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has officially joined the presidential race ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Sowore disclosed the development in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday morning.

According to SaharaReporters, Sowore is expected to contest on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC).

Recall that the activist, while accusing the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of arresting and slamming fresh charges against him, stated that he would soon officially declare his presidential ambition.

“They took me to their detention when they were tired; they came and call me that I should be going home.

“So I’m heading home now, no reason to worry, we know why this is happening, they are afraid of the future, they are afraid Sowore will declare very soon and become the president of Nigeria; you can’t stop me”, he said in a post on his social media handle.

This will be the second time the activist will be contesting for the position. He was the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 presidential election.

Without any form of written or verbal address, Mr Sowore, in the early hours of Tuesday, shared a banner with the caption “SOWORE FOR PRESIDENT.”

Although Mr Sowore did not give much details about his ambition on the shared banner, the former AAC presidential candidate had on Thursday, after his release from police detention in Abuja, promised not to back down.

He said the recent petition filed against him by a former member of the House of Representatives, Ned Nwoko, and his subsequent detention was sponsored by the APC-led government to stop his declaration.

“I knew this is what’s going to happen and I’m not surprised that that’s what they did. But when we got here, I made it clear to everybody, all of the police officers involved, that I can’t write any statement and I won’t accept any kind of bail condition attached to my release,” he had said.

A Governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Chidozie Nwankwo has defected to the African Action Congress (AAC) to contest the Nov. 6 governorship election in Anambra.

Nwankwo told newsmen in Awka on Monday that he decided to defect to AAC following his inability to clinch the governor ticket under his former party.

According to him, my mission is a divine project, and so I call on residents to ensure they play their part.

“Our mission to govern the state is a divine project.

We promise to usher in a new dawn of development in the state.

“Now that we have found a new party for the realisation of the project, I call on all registered voters of the state to do the needful by voting for me.

“We are not in this race for ourselves, but to help chart a new course for our state and its people,” he said.

Nwankwo called on all and sundry to join hands with him in taking the state to the next level.

“With experiences garnered in politics, it will significantly be complimented by a former Anambra House Speaker, Princess Chinwe Nwebili as my running mate, we would do much for the state.

“I believe that getting the fundamentals right and working in synergy will position us to win the election,’’ he said.

  • Anambra 2021: 11 Governorship aspirants dump APC enmasse, move to AAC

Anambra 2021: 11 Governorship aspirants dump APC enmasse, move to AAC

    From Chuks Collins, Awka

After series of marathon meetings that ended in fruitless efforts to resolve the crisis that beset the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra state following the supposed June 26,2021 governorship primary, majority of the aspirants have reportedly dumped the party.

The move which came barely three hours to the July 30,2021 deadline for the closure of substitution window of names by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) saw to the literal dismemberment of the APC in the state by the 14 governorship aspirants.

While majority of the aspirants according to an inside source opted out of the party in protest after failed efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis, Chief George Moghalu, the main frontline aspirant and leader of the party in the South East zone remained behind to slug it out conclusively with Sen Andy Uba in court.

The rest led by Dr Chidozie Nwankwo resolved to move over to African Action Congress(AAC) where Nwankwo is the flagbearer.

They also agreed to return to the APC shortly after the November 6,2021 Governorship election in the state.

Two other aspirants-Chief Bennett Etiaba and Col Geff Onyejegbu(rtd) are to also fly the flag of other parties. But that they would collapse them into Dr Nwankwo’s AAC few weeks after, ahead the Nov 6,2021 election.

The source also disclosed that besides Moghalu, some others including Chief Ikeobasi Mokelu, Ise Nise opted to stick with Sen Uba.

The peace efforts was led by a special committee set up by the leadership of the APC made up principally by some serving APC state governors. Unfortunately their moves yielded no actual positive outcome.

  • Ondo poll: AAC vows to sue INEC for replacing party’s deputy gov’s name

Ondo poll: AAC vows to sue INEC for replacing party’s deputy gov’s name

The African Action Congress (AAC) said it would take legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for replacing the name of its Ondo deputy governorship candidate with an unknown one.

The AAC made this known in a statement in Akure on Sunday by Mr Oluwasunkanmi Oni, State Publicity Secretary and Mr Alex Adeniyi, State Chairman.

Recall that INEC had on Friday released the list of candidates of the 17 political parties that would participate in the Oct. 10 governorship election in the state

“AAC Ondo State Chapter wish to register her displeasure on the list released by INEC on Ondo State governorship election of participating political parties.

“It is ignominious for INEC, a body that is expected to be apolitical, to collaborate with some unrecognized entities for reasons best known to them to tamper with the structure and constitution of our party,” the party stated.

It explained that the party on July 25, 2020 held her governorship primary election at the International Culture and Event Centre (DOME) where Prince Adekunle Adeleye was elected by the party delegates as the governorship candidate of the party.

“Thereafter, Prince Adekunle Adeleye’s name and the Deputy Governorship candidate selected, Mrs Mopelola Evelyn Ibrahim, were duly sent to INEC as governorship and deputy governorship candidates of the party, respectively.

“It is therefore saddening that INEC went on to manufacture an unknown deputy governorship candidate, namely Samuel Tope Omotosho, who is totally unknown to our party, who is not and have never been a member of our party, AAC, either in Ondo State or anywhere in Nigeria.

“At this point, we demand INEC to abjure her errors at once and replace the unrecognized name (Samuel Tope Omotosho) with the authentic name (Mrs Mopelola Evelyn Ibrahim) submitted to them by the party or face legal action.

“Enough of this inglorious act of INEC meddling with and distorting the internal affairs of political parties, AAC inclusive, each time there is an election.

“We, the African Action Congress (AAC), reject in its entirety the unknown name paired with Prince Adekunle Adeleye, our party’s Gubernatorial Candidate, as running mate,” it said.

  • AAC expels Ezenwa, affirms Sowore as chairman

The African Action Congress (AAC) has reaffirmed Mr Omoyele Sowore as its National Chairman, while expelling Mr Leonard Ezenwa, former Treasurer and Secretary of the party.
Mr Joshua Adeoye, AAC Deputy National Secretary, read the resolution after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party on Saturday in Abuja.
Sowore is the National Chairman and the 2019 Presidential candidate of AAC, while Malcolm Fabiyi is the Deputy National Chairman of the party and both were suspended by Ezenwa’s faction.
Adeoye said allegations against Sowore leading to his purported expulsion from the party were manufactured, adding that there was no case of financial impropriety against him.
Adeoye noted that Sowore as a candidate declared campaign money, adding that he carried the people along as money was being spent up to the end of the campaign.
“The NEC outrightly rejects, cancels, reverses and totally repudiates the purported suspension of Sowore and Fabiyi from their offices.
“The NEC hereby affirms and reinstates Sowore as the one and only national chairman of AAC and Fabiyi as the deputy national chairman of the party.
He said that all actions carried out by Ezenwa in the name of AAC including documents signed or authored by him ” are dismissed, set aside and nullified forthwith”.
According to him, Ezenwa’s expulsion followed his failure to appear before the NEC to defend himself in line with article 80 of AAC constitution which found him guilty of the alleged offence.
The highest decision making body of the party called for immediate arrest and prosecution of Ezenwa for alleged forgery and perjury among others criminal acts.
AAC had been involved in leadership crisis leading to the removal of its presidential candidate by a Federal High Court in Abuja for alleged financial impropriety.
Mr Inibehe Effiong, the National Legal Adviser of the party, however, said the party was not joined in the case filed by Ezenwa, adding that the person who also filed the case at the FCT High court was still unknown.
Mr Murtala Adamu, Niger state Chairman moved for adoption of the resolution of the NEC, while Mr Rotimi Ogunlana, Chairman, Oyo state seconded the resolution.

  • Court upholds suit stopping Sowore from parading self as AAC chair

The Federal High Court, Abuja on Friday upheld a suit seeking to stop the suspended National Chairman, African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, from parading himself the party’s national chair.
The court, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, gave the judgment on Friday in Abuja.
The court also ordered Malcolm Fabiyi to stop parading himself as the AAC’s deputy national chairman.
The orders followed an application in a suit instituted on May 17 by the acting National Chairman of the party, Leonard Nzenwa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had granted the orders after an application by the plaintiff, through his Lawyer, Barrister Emeka Ozani.
Sowore, who was also the party’s presidential candidate in the last general elections, vowed to appeal the ruling.
