Speaker Abbas mourns Access Holdings CEO, Wigwe, wife, son, Ogunbanjo

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed shock and deep pain over the death of the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc and founder of HOW Foundation, Dr Herbert Wigwe, CON, and others in a helicopter crash in the United States.

Wigwe reportedly died in the chopper alongside his wife, Doreen and son Chizi, as well as a former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, MFR.

The Speaker, after receiving an official confirmation of the incident and deaths by the Group Company Secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, on Sunday, described it as a huge tragedy to Nigeria as a country.

Speaker Abbas recalled how Wigwe as CEO of Access Bank Plc grew the deposit money bank to a household name in Nigeria and spread across Africa and other continents.

He also noted that Wigwe’s elevation to GCEO of Access Holdings Plc was an attestation to the entrepreneurial excellence, business acumen and corporate ethics.

The Speaker said Wigwe has left a huge vacuum in the banking sector and the corporate world by extension, urging the corporate organisations that he championed and served most of his life to sustain his legacy.

Speaker Abbas prayed to God to console the bereaved families and grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones. He also prayed to God to grant the departed souls eternal rest.

State of the Nation: Hardship, insecurity: Speaker Abbas reassures, says there’s hope at end of tunnel

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has acknowledged the concerns of Nigerians on the current state of the economy, security and other issues, assuring them of doubled efforts towards addressing the issues.

At a world press conference at his office in Abuja on Thursday, the first of its kind since he assumed speakership of the House on June 13, 2023, Speaker Abbas noted that the conference was dedicated to “addressing some of the most pressing national issues we face.”

He said: “As the Speaker of the largest representative body in Nigeria, representing all corners of Nigeria, I feel it a duty to address some pressing challenges we face as a nation. The very fabric of our society is being tested, our resilience strained, and our unity challenged. However, amidst these trials, our spirit remains unbroken, and our resolve to overcome and thrive grows stronger.

“As representatives of the Nigerian people, we cannot pay lip service to the plight of the same individuals who elected us into office to protect their interests. It is our resolve to see that Nigerians, wherever they are, live their normal lives in peace and relative ease.”

While noting that the House was “acutely” aware of the rising security challenges affecting different parts of the country, Speaker Abbas said as elected representatives, they also acknowledge the pain and suffering of every family that had been a victim of “brutal crimes and needless violence.”

“Let it be known that your cries have not fallen on deaf ears, and your tears have not gone unseen. We stand in solidarity with every Nigerian affected and commit to deploying robust legislative measures to empower our security agencies, ensure justice, and restore peace and order in our communities,” the Speaker stated.

In the face of such hardships, Speaker Abbas said it was natural to feel a sense of despair and frustration. “The impact of the challenges I have identified above is felt in every home, on every street, and in the hearts of every Nigerian. Yet, it is precisely in times like these that our true strength as a nation is revealed. Our resilience, unity, and indomitable spirit have seen us through difficult times before, and I have no doubt that these qualities will carry us through again,” he said.

To those affected by the scourge of insecurity, the Speaker said: “I want you to know that your government hears you loud and clear. We are taking decisive steps to address the root causes of this menace, deploying both military and diplomatic resources to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians. It is a complex challenge, one that requires patience and time to resolve, but I assure you that we are making progress.”

On the economic front, Speaker Abbas said the government was equally committed to reversing the downturn and setting the country back on a path of sustainable growth. He noted that the policies of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration were designed to stimulate the economy, encourage investment, and create jobs. “We understand the urgency of the situation and are working tirelessly to alleviate the hardships many of you are experiencing,” he stated.

The Speaker stressed: “The issue of food shortages is particularly close to my heart. Food security is fundamental to national security. We are implementing comprehensive strategies to boost agricultural production, improve supply chains, and ensure that affordable food is accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live.

“I ask for your patience as these measures take effect. Change, especially of the magnitude we are aiming for, does not happen overnight. It requires time, effort, and, most importantly, the support of every Nigerian. Each of us has a role to play in this journey towards a more secure, prosperous, and food-secure Nigeria. Whether you are a farmer, a business owner, a teacher, or a student, your contribution matters.

“Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for our beloved country. As your Speaker, I am filled with renewed hope for what we can achieve together. In conclusion, I call upon every Nigerian, from the north to the south, from the east to the west, to join hands in solidarity. Let us support our government’s policies, let us be patient, and let us work together towards the common goal of a better, stronger, and more unified Nigeria.”

Speaker Abbas also noted that the President Tinubu had demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the security situation and enhancing the capability of the Armed Forces. The Speaker recalled that just on Tuesday, he attended the induction ceremony of the T-129 ATAK helicopter and the King Air 360i aircraft into the esteemed Nigerian Air Force.

The acquisition of these state-of-the-art aircrafts, he stated, clearly indicated the government’s dedication to investing in the security infrastructure of the nation. He added that it also reflected a proactive stance in adapting to the dynamic challenges of modern warfare and a commitment to providing the Armed Forces with the best tools to defend Nigeria and the people.

The Speaker also recalled that on November 8, 2023, the President signed the N2.176trillion Supplementary Appropriation Act to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and address Nigeria’s critical infrastructure deficit, amongst other considerations. “These investments in the face of global economic downturn and budgetary constraints attest to the government’s determination to end insecurity in Nigeria,” he said.

His words: “While recognising and commending the patriotic and courageous efforts of our security agencies, we must have the courage to effect changes where necessary. These are among the issues that the forthcoming Legislative Summit on Security will address. This summit, which comes up in a matter of weeks, will, among others, allow us to hear directly from the key stakeholders in the sector and come up with legislative measures to modernise our security system and improve its operational efficiency and effectiveness.

“As emphasised in our Legislative Agenda, the time has come for us to demand greater transparency from our security agencies and full accountability for all the funds spent and earmarked for spending in the sector. We kick-started our sectoral debates in November last year with the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to demonstrate the seriousness we attach to security.”

On the economy, the Speaker stated that members of the House were also aware of the challenges facing their constituents across Nigeria. Of particular concern to the House, he noted, was the high inflation rates, particularly the rate of food inflation. “As you are all aware, various factors, including insecurity, economic downturns and climate change-induced disruptions, have exacerbated this crisis,” he noted.

Speaker Abbas commended the “rapid and decisive response” of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the issue of food security. He recalled that the 2023 Supplementary Budget provided N200billion palliative package, mainly for grains, seeds, agricultural inputs and equipment for farmers. He noted that this momentum had been sustained in the 2024 budget, which he said had significantly improved budgetary allocations to all critical sectors of the economy, especially defense, healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The Speaker also recalled that in 2023, the President declared a state of emergency on food security, focusing on improving both availability and affordability. He said some immediate measures approved the release of fertilisers and grains to farmers and households, particularly given the fallouts from the removal of fuel subsidies.

Others, he noted, included boosting the national strategic food reserve and introducing a price stabilisation mechanism, especially for critical food items. And just a few days ago, President Tinubu also constituted a special presidential committee headed by the Chief of Staff to the President to take immediate steps to arrest the worsening food situation.

Speaker Abbas partly stated: “We in the National Assembly have supported and will continue to support the government’s efforts in finding effective solutions to these challenges. For the first time in the history of the Nigerian legislature, the 10th House set up a Committee on Nutrition and Food Security with a mandate to strengthen the legislative framework for nutrition governance in Nigeria, advocate for the inclusion of nutrition in government priority programmes and monitor resource allocation to nutrition in the annual budget estimates.

“I wish to reassure all Nigerians that the House will prioritise funding for programmes and initiatives to alleviate hunger and enhance security. We are fully committed to supporting policies that will stimulate our economy, provide relief, and ensure relief is felt in every home.

“In addition to promoting security so that farmers can feel safe to return to their farms, the House will support import and export policies that stabilise food prices and ensure adequate supply of essential food items at affordable rates, especially for our constituents living in rural areas. We also propose enacting legislation to enable swift government response to tackle food shortages, including emergency food aid and support for affected populations.”

Speaker Abbas stated that as Nigerians navigate through “these tumultuous times,” the importance of unity and constructive engagement could not be overstated, stressing that the synergy between the three arms of the government – executive, legislative, and judiciary – is paramount.

He said: “For this reason, I call on every citizen to engage in positive and constructive criticism. Your voices and opinions are invaluable, providing the compass that guides our actions and policies. At this juncture, ladies and gentlemen of the press, as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, my colleagues and I invite Nigerians to engage critically with us on important national issues. In fact, we encourage and welcome criticisms, but these must be constructive and targeted at building national unity and cohesion and advancing development.

“However, while we encourage freedom of expression and constructive dialogue, we must also be wary of the dangers of fake news and campaigns of slander and defamation, especially against the President and senior government officials.”

The Speaker noted that there had been a rise in defamation campaigns on social media involving the deliberate dissemination of false and misleading information with the intent to harm the reputation of individuals or organisations. According to him, these campaigns often target political opponents, seeking to undermine their credibility, integrity, and public trust.

The Speaker cited the recent case of “unjustified and baseless allegations” against the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, which he warned “point to the danger of an unfettered and unaccountable social media.”

He stated: “Such acts not only undermine the integrity of our democracy but also erode the fabric of our national unity. Yet, Femi is just one of millions of Nigerians who suffer cyber bullying and coordinated campaigns of defamation daily. Too many victims are not as powerful as him to defend themselves.”

“Those of us who have worked with him for over a decade can attest to his patriotism and integrity. His willingness to voluntarily subject himself to investigation by all security and law enforcement agencies demonstrates his rectitude and honour. I urge the security agencies to work diligently and swiftly to investigate all matters he has raised in his letter to them and inform Nigerians of their findings. If not found guilty, these agencies must fish out those responsible for the character assassination and ensure they are brought before the law.

“It is most unfortunate that someone who has, over the years, built a reputation through dint of hard work and commitment to service, should have same damaged by unscrupulous elements. The consistent attempt to pull him down for purely political or personal reasons and without consequence is deeply deplorable.”

In attendance at the press conference were the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu; the Leader of the House, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere; Deputy Leader, Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims; Chief Whip, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo; and the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga.

Others were the Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda; Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki; and Minority Whip, Hon. Ali Isa, as well as several chairmen of committees, caucus leaders, among others.

Speaker Abbas responded to questions from journalists that came from different media organisations on insecurity, economy and other national issues.

  • Speaker Abbas Tajudeen & His Tri-sector Leadership Effects

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen & His Tri-sector Leadership Effects

    By Ahmed Musa Baba

It has been seven months since the inauguration of the 10th House of Representatives with Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, as the Speaker, and Members of the House, as well as Nigerians whom they represent can see the shifting paradigm of a progressive and people-centred representation in the way and manner the House has handled its affairs so far.

Not only have members striven to sustain the tempo established by the 9th House under former speaker and now Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Ghajabiamila, in terms of sponsorship of bills, an area which the current Speaker stands tall as a pace-setter with a total of 74, out of which 21 were signed into law; they have done so with zeal as a total of 962 bills have so far been introduced with 120 of them passing the second reading stage.

The period also saw the passage of 500 motions and resolutions with a total of 153 petitions received and referred for legislative actions, just as they have also spared no time in ensuring that all important processes of helping the government of the day achieve its dreams of renewing the people’s hope are dealt with expeditiously.

The House, despite the delay in the presentation of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Papers (FSP), which usually precedes the appropriation bill from the Executive arm, ensured efforts were expended at meeting all necessary legal deadlines in their passage, including the 2024 Appropriation Act. This meant that the House had to reconvene on Saturday, 30th December 2023 to consider the budget report and pass same for presidential assent, all in the spirit of sustaining the national budget cycle of January to December, which was painstakingly entrenched by the 9th Assembly.

Efforts by the House under Speaker Abbas Tajudeen can best be described as the literal definition of hitting the ground running from day one. The Speaker, having emerged through popular demand with massive support across party lines, came prepared for leadership, applying what in the words of the Chairman House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson, is known as ‘tri-sector approach.’

According to a New Impact thread on perplexity, an AI search engine application, “tri-sector leaders are individuals who can navigate across sectors and enable everyone to rise above real differences, find common purpose, and get big things done.”

It posited further that “tri-sector leadership is essential for addressing large-scale problems that require collaboration between the business, government, and nonprofit sectors.”

Key aspects of tri-sector leadership according to the thread include, First, adopting a mindset that understands the interconnectedness of the public, private, and social sectors, and recognizes opportunities to innovate and solve pressing problems. These, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, has demonstrated cultivating a rich network of resources through collaboration with international development partners, civil society groups and the public.

Second, involving community stakeholders from nonprofits, governments, and the community at large to identify needs and promote an understanding of tri-sector strategies was brought to bare when the Speaker prevailed on his colleagues to subject the 2024 Appropriation Bill to public deliberation and analysis for necessary inputs at a town hall on December 4th, 2023.

Several civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, professional bodies, chief executives in the public and private sectors, as well as student unions, who were represented at the event, expressed their views.

Speaker Abbas, at the event, said: “Your participation in this town hall meeting underscores the essence of democracy – the power of the people to engage actively in governance and decision-making processes.

“You are invited to closely examine the 2024 budget proposal as presented to the National Assembly by Mr. President. As representatives of the people, it is our duty to ensure that the annual appropriation reflects the needs and aspirations of every Nigerian citizen.

“I wish to reassure all Nigerians that the President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the National Assembly are committed to addressing these hardships,” he said.

Third, education and training: Training the next generation of leaders to see opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings and begin asking key questions about emerging governance models and the rationale for their development. Speaker Abbas has, despite his busy legislative schedule, continued to create time to deliver lectures at different fora, including to young aspiring leaders in training with the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI), founded by his predecessor, Gbajabiamila.

Speaker Abbas at the Meet and Greet session with the second cohorts of the initiative on December 14, 2023 said: “My deepest gratitude goes to my predecessor, who initiated this mentorship programme as a way of exposing younger ones into the legislative tradition of our nation.

“I pledge the resolve of the 10th House to sustain this laudable initiative and strengthen it even further. We will continue to identify with the initiative, expand it and provide all necessary support to institutionalise it even beyond the 10th House. As I look forward to witnessing your growth and contributions to our nation’s governance, I urge you to make the most use of this rare opportunity.”

While taking his time to answer pressing questions from the young minds, the Speaker also insisted on having one-on-one photo sessions with each member of the cohorts and their operations team during which he interacted with each of them with the pledge to facilitate meetings with their representatives in the House.

Fourth, a listening and accessible leader:
The accessibility rate of the Speaker can be said to be second to none, both to his colleagues in the Legislature, the bureaucratic and his personal staff, as well as external guests. The speaker rises early and retires late due to the multitude of engagements, attending to individuals and groups on official or personal matters. The official guest house, which should ordinarily be his safe haven away from stress, is more of an annex of the National Assembly where those who can’t catch him in the office troop to for his attention.

Fifth, Principled, Compassionate and generous: For those who have come in close contact with the Iyan Zazzau, they can attest to the fact that he embodies the above attributes and even more. The Speaker represents the old chip of the block who demands that things are done right in accordance with the rules governing them, and that cutting corners through dishonest means are totally abhored. He minced no word telling his staff to always do their best to imbibe the culture of honesty and forthrightness at all times.

On his part, the Speaker has demonstrated immense credibility by keeping his promise to prioritize the welfare needs of his staff beyond expectations. Not only that, despite limited available resources, official needs of various units are supported to enable them achieve set goals.

The Speaker’s work ethics and selfless act of attending to all and sundry were aptly captured by Hon. Benson during a podcast session with the Speaker’s Media team in December 2023:

“I think we’ve been very blessed with great speakers, Dogara was a great Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila took it a notch higher, our present Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas came in with a toga; they call him Billiaminu, because he did something unprecedented here by sponsoring the passage of 74 bills. So he comes with a bag of experience.

“I call him a trisector athlete. He’s got traditional experience from being part of the Zazzau Emirate council as the Iyan Zazzau. There’s a form of wisdom that comes with that. He’s been a teacher all his life; there’s a form of wisdom that comes with that, he’s also a Ph.D holder, and that also comes with intellectual wisdom. So, when you combine the three, you have what is called an Emerap (a battle or armored personnel carrier that can do a whole lot of things on the battle field).

“With that, he’s added so much value to the legislative process; he’s commanded the troops well; he’s very witty, assertive, very knowledgeable and a man of wisdom; an academic who has a broad knowledge of the economy and where Nigeria ought to be. He’s thoroughly keyed into the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, and he’s also loved by Mr. president.”

  • Yoruba Progressive Youths hail Speaker Abass, Bichi over quick passage of 2024 Budget

Yoruba Progressive Youths hail Speaker Abass, Bichi over quick passage of 2024 Budget

One of the foremost support groups of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South West, Yoruba Progressive Youths (YPY) has joined other Nigerians in commending the 10th House of Representatives, for the swift passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bill.

Otunba Kola Salau, President of the group, in a statement Sunday afternoon, described the RT. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas-led House as “most proactive and patriotic”.

Salau specifically acknowledged “the dexterity with which the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abubakar Bichi conducted the budget scrutiny and how he advanced the interest of the general public far above his personal interest”.

He said, “worthy of commendation is a man that many Nigerians didn’t believe would deliver on mandate. The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, RT. Hon. Abubakar Bichi is the man of the year. He dazzled the naysayers and came out clean and beat the record as the first Chairman of Committee who delivered on Appropriation Bill within one month.

“We watched with disbelief, how Hon. Bichi cordinated his Colleagues, especially Committee Chairmen to beat the time frame of January-December budget circle, even when he had no much time in his disposal.

“We are happy that Bichi and his Committee didn’t disappoint us. The Yoruba Progressive Youths celebrate his sincerity, we celebrate his doggedness, we celebrate his patriotism and determination, to contribute to the attainment of the renewed hope mantra of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

The group also pledged total loyalty and support to the leadership of the 10th House, for providing enabling environment for the smooth legislative activities on the 2024 Appropriation Bill, saying, “it is now confirmed that the legislature is not working to sabotage the good intentions of our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

While appreciating all Members of the National Assembly for rising to the occasion of patriotism by denying themselves sleep and comfort, in making sure Nigeria gets it right; the group also called on President Tinubu to quickly attend to the budget, in order to ameliorate the many inherited sufferings being faced by Nigerians.

Recall that President Tinubu had on the 29th November, 2023, presented the 2024 Appropriation estimates of N27.5 trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly.

The Lawmakers subsequently adjourned sittings for three weeks, to enable them interface with various ministries, departments and agencies of Government for budget scrutiny.

The House also called off the Christmas vacation on Saturday, 30th December, 2023, to pass the 2024 budget, with an increase in capital component by N1.27 trillion.

  • Engage govt on legitimate grievances, Speaker Abbas urges Igbo leaders

Engage govt on legitimate grievances, Speaker Abbas urges Igbo leaders

    …hails Deputy Speaker Kalu’s South-East peace project

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has urged Igbo leaders in the South-East geopolitical zone to engage the government in addressing the legitimate grievances of their people.

Speaker Abbas, in his address at the launch of the Peace in the South East Project, an initiative of the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, decried that despite South-East’s economic strengths, agitations in the zone had caused it colossal losses.

Speaking on Friday at the event held in Bende, Abia State, Kalu’s hometown, Speaker Abbas stated that the peace in the South-East is, by extension, the peace and progress of the entire Nigeria.

The Speaker noted that the PISE-P was borne out of his deputy’s deep love for the zone and profound concern over the rise of insecurity, “which has cast a dark shadow over the region.”

He lamented that the wave of insecurity “continues to cripple daily life and significantly paralyse socio-economic endeavours, in a region whose people are renowned for their resourcefulness and economic enterprise.”

Speaker Abbas, therefore, described Hon. Kalu’s project as a “historic and patriotic endeavour.”

The Speaker said: “It may be recalled that between 1956 and 1965, the then Eastern Region was regarded as the fastest-growing economy in Africa and Asia. Indeed, the South-East has remained an economic powerhouse in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa, leading in trade and commerce.

“From Aba to Adamawa and Enugu to Europe, Igbos are known to be entrepreneurial, resourceful, peace-loving, savvy, tenacious and peace-loving. That is the character of the Igbos. That is who you are. Three of your cities, Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi, are among the most industrialised in Nigeria.

“A sizeable chunk of the major investments in many parts of Nigeria are Igbo-owned. Your contributions to the Nigerian economy, either through imports, business investment, or diaspora remittances, among others, are indisputable.

“The contributions of the Igbos are apparent not only with regard to the economy but also in all fields of human endeavour, including literature, academia, the creative industry and many more.”

Speaker Abass said unfortunately, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social fabric, the region had faced numerous challenges in recent years.

“These challenges have often manifested in the form of separatist agitations, unrest, and terrorism. The consequences on both lives and property have been colossal,” he said.

To address these issues effectively, the Speaker said the stakeholders must first understand their root causes.

Speaker Abbas noted: “These underlying causes include the sense of marginalisation and the feeling by many people in the South-East that their voices are not heard and their concerns are not adequately addressed in the national discourse.

“Secondly, the general economic challenges and the attendant lack of sufficient economic opportunities fuel frustration and make the youth more susceptible to radical ideologies. This is true for most parts of Nigeria, not just the South-East.

“Additionally, we cannot ignore either should we be ashamed to acknowledge the historical context, including memories of past conflicts and perceived injustices that continue to influence the current sentiments in the region.”

The Speaker noted that Nigeria is a tapestry of over 250 ethnic groups and multiple religions. While being the country’s greatest strength, he said the diversity also poses significant challenges and can sometimes lead to division and conflict.

“The task before us, therefore, is not just to coexist but to thrive in our diversity,” he stated.

Speaker Abbas said most importantly, the challenges in governance, including corruption and ineffective administration, “have exacerbated the situation, leading to a lack of trust in the authorities.”

The Speaker stated that he believed strongly PISE-P could foster peace, stability and sustainable development in the South-East and restore the vibrancy and prosperity of the people.

He noted that for peace to be sustainable, a multi-faceted approach, as clearly outlined in the seven pillars of the project, must be adopted.

Speaker Abbas said: “The first is inclusive governance, which is crucial in ensuring that the people of this region feel adequately represented at all levels of government and decision-making processes.

“Secondly, it is important to emphasise that peace is a sine qua non for development. The development craved by the people of this region can never be achieved in the absence of peace.

“History has taught us that violence, carnage and mayhem have never resolved conflicts. This underscores the need for open and honest dialogue and reconciliation between the government and community leaders and between different ethnic and social groups in the South East.

“Dialogue should address grievances, foster understanding, and promote reconciliation. Also, I call on the political leaders from the South-East to engage the government in addressing the legitimate grievances of their people.”

The Speaker stated that it was only when peace and order had been restored, that the focus could be on creating economic opportunities, particularly for the youth.

At the National Assembly, Speaker Abbas said the lawmakers would ensure that funding was provided for investment in infrastructure, support for local businesses, and the creation of job opportunities.

“In a few days, the National Assembly will pass the 2024 budget. Special care has been taken to ensure a balance in the distribution of infrastructure projects across the six geopolitical zones. We have a duty to rebuild this region and accelerate its recovery towards becoming the economic powerhouse it has been.

“Only a few days later, the House of Representatives passed the South East Development Commission bill, sponsored by Hon. Benjamin Kalu. When assented to by the President, the Commission will support the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the region.”

Another critical strategy for ensuring sustainable peace and development, according to Speaker Abbas, is educating the populace about the importance of unity and the dangers of division.

The Speaker added that the agitations in the South-East and other regions of the country could be greatly minimised through good governance and adherence to the rule of law.

“Legislators and all public officials, as well as traditional and religious institutions, have a role in building trust and stability through good governance,” he stated.
