Assault: 52,745 respondents sign petition against Senator Abbo in less than 24 hours
…as protesters demand recall, prosecution of embattled senator, police orderlies
Embattled serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Elisha Abbo might have bitten more than he can chew.
Nigerians have started various petitions on popular petition platform, Change.org. demanding his recall, prosecution and subsequent punishment according to the dictates of the law.
The call came following a video that went viral where the newly elected senator under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was seen assaulting a female at a sex toy shop in Abuja.
The petition started by one Daniel Adebayo about 21 hours ago initially targeted 50,000 signatures but had exceeded the target as at the time of filing this report. Checks by TNG showed that 52, 745 signatures had so far been collated. The target had since been raised to 75,000.
In the petition, he said, “Senate Elisha Abbo, who has benefitted from #NotTooYoungToRun movement and voted in as the youngest senator in Nigeria has acted irresponsibly by assaulting a helpless and defenceless nursing mother without provocation.
“As a senator, he is meant to be responsible, protect the right of Nigerians, instead he chooses to abuse and molest a defenceless citizen.
“His behaviour is abhorrent, completely unacceptable and totally condemnable.
“I am appealing to Nigerians to help sign this petition so that he can be prosecuted and brought to justice, as this will serve as a deterrent to others who might want to abuse power and perpetrate similar acts.”
Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters on Wednesday staged protests in Abuja demanding for the recall of the embattled senator.
The protesters who marched on the Force headquarters in Abuja said the senator must be investigated and recalled by his constituency.

In the light of this, the NWC has commenced investigation into the matter and summons Senator Elisha Abbo in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP and code of conduct of our members,” the statement issued by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary of the party said.
Also, the party said it had taken note of the immediate action taken by the Senate, adding that the PDP, at all levels of engagement, is reputed for her utmost respect and commitment towards the rights, safety and well-being of citizens, particularly women and could not tolerate any callous assault on any Nigerian.
“The PDP therefore assures Nigerians that it will always stand on the side of justice and will never spare a thought in taking action on any of its members found wanting, particularly those elected or appointed into public offices,” it said.
