SPECIAL REPORT: The unending reign of terror in southern Kaduna

“Marauding Fulani herdsmen and other unchecked terrorist groups have continued to wreak havoc on defenseless villagers, killing at least 345 people in Southern Kaduna since January 2022”.

A fresh wave of deadly attacks in the southern part of Kaduna State has led to the death of local residents of Ungwan Wakili community in Zango Kataf Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The cycle of killings and abduction in the region which has spanned years has been linked to politically motivated banditry, revenge killings, and mutual violence by criminal gangs acting on ethnic and religious differences.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reported that a young boy rearing his animals in the bush was killed on Tuesday in retaliation to the killing of a local last month.

However, in a revenge attack launched at 08:40 pm on Saturday, Fulani herders allegedly reigned terror on residents of Ungwan Wakili for about 40 minutes unrestrained, Killing at least 17 persons despite the presence of a security base in the community.

Council chairman of Zango Kataf LGA Francis Sani Zimbo, described the attack as barbaric and called for investigations to unravel the perpetrators and bring them to book.

Public Relations Officer of the Police command Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the attack on Sunday without stating the number of casualties and no arrests have been made yet.

“I can confirm that there was an attack, and people were killed, but we are yet to ascertain the exact number of those killed,” Jalige, a superintendent of police said.

    Timeline of attacks

Marauding Fulani herdsmen and other unchecked terrorist groups have continued to wreak havoc on defenseless villagers, killing at least 345 people in Southern Kaduna since January 2022.

Last July, the Kaduna state government while giving a security report on violent conflicts in the state disclosed that non-state actors had killed 645 persons within the first half of 2022.

The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs Samuel Aruwan, noted that about one-third of those killings (234 deaths) took place in Southern Kaduna.

“All of these portend the near-total collapse of the local economy in frontline areas, which is mainly sustained by crop and livestock farming. Residents have been dispossessed of their foremost means of sustenance. Vibrant weekly markets have been disrupted,” Mr Aruwan said.

    Timeline on southern Kaduna killings.

On 5 June at least 32 people were killed in Ungwan Gamu, Dogon Noma, Ungwan Sarki and Maikori villages in Kajuru LGA when they were attacked by militiamen riding three motorcycles who were reportedly assisted by a white helicopter that fired on those attempting to defend Maikori village.

Two weeks later on June 19, three people were killed and 36 persons, including women and children, were abducted when some gunmen attacked two churches in Roboh community in the same local government.

On 31st August, terrorists reportedly blocked the Birnin-Gwari route to Funtua, in Birnin-Gwari LGA, killing two persons, including a commercial driver, after the General Officer Commanding Taoreed Lagbaja, led troops on an onslaught of terrorists in the area.

In November, 15 farmers were killed by terrorists operating in the three Local Government Areas of the state – Giwa, Birnin-Gwari and Kajuru – which have become hotbeds for attacks.

Over 40 people were killed and an unknown number were abducted in a series of attacks by armed Fulani men last December which also saw the destruction of several homes and properties in the Malagum 1 and Sokwong communities of the Kagoro Chiefdom in Kaura LGA.

Some survivors of the attacks claimed the attackers used cell-phones belonging to some of their murdered victims to threaten more violence on residents of the area.

    A cry for help

The Speaker of Kaura LGA Atuk Stephen, pointed out that attacks in the area “have been consistent and multi-dimensional with efforts of the security operatives and government not seen or felt”.

Similarly, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has repeatedly raised the alarm of kidnapping, plundering and invasion of communities in the southern part of Kaduna State, which it attributes to the “embarrassing leadership failures” on the part of Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

SOKAPU has accused the federal and state governments of abandoning residents of southern Kaduna to their fate, even as it criticised relevant security agencies for not doing enough to prevent these incessant attacks or rescue the abductees.

Spokesperson of the Union Luka Binniyat, said: “If El-Rufai has such goodwill towards the people of Kaduna State why has he not approached the Supreme Court to force the Federal government to wipe out the so-called bandits that have taken over a large portion of Kaduna State creating their own government right under his nose?”

“We are yet to see El-Rufai make a case at the Supreme Court forcing the National Emergency Management Agency to give relief materials to the millions of IDPs in Kaduna State.”

The Union urged the governor to prioritise the security and welfare of the people of Kaduna State in order to stem the tide of insecurity.

Collective effort required to secure lives and property – military

The Nigerian military has assured residents of the state that it would continue to do its best to curb the high level of insecurity in the state.

It said contrary to the allegations that the military and other security agents were not doing enough to contain the attacks, it had undertaken several operations to foil more bouts of violence in the state.

“If one or two attacks took place, three were prevented,” an army source told this newspaper.

Meanwhile, the Commander Special Task Force Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army (NA) Major General Ibrahim Ali, noted that security was everybody’s business and requires the collective efforts of everyone.

He noted that the constitutional responsibility of security agencies was to protect the lives and properties of citizens which he said is achievable through the support and cooperation of the people.

Newsmen reports that social media reports claimed on Saturday that Jachimike was abducted by gunmen at the Boss FM radio station after presenting a programme. The news of his abduction caused serious panic in Imo.

The police, however, described the news of the abduction as false and claimed he was arrested over a case of financial fraud reported against him.

“The news is false, because he was never abducted rather, he was arrested by police operatives from Police Area Command Owerri, lmo State.

“The fact was that sometime in the month of March, 2022, a lady reported a case of fraud against Prof. Jachimike Adiele at the Police Area Command Owerri, alleging that the suspect collected N1.2 million from her with a promise to give her a shop in Douglas market.

The PPRO stated that after some months, the victim discovered that there was no shop and demanded for her money but could not get it hence, her report .

“Luck ran against him today when the surety got information that he was in the studio presenting a programme and alerted the police.

“On arrival, the police were professional, they never went to the station rather, they waited until he concluded his programme presentation and was heading home when he was arrested to the station.

  • KIDNAP: Army to summon Methodist prelate

The Army has said it would meet with the Methodist Prelate Samuel Kanu-Uche to know more about the circumstances surrounding his abduction.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu.

His Eminence Kanu-Uche, his chaplain and a bishop were kidnapped at the weekend and released 24 hours later after paying N100 million ransom.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after his release, the Prelate said: ”Military personnel are aiding the kidnappers who disguise as herders in the daytime but are kidnappers at night.”

Army’s reaction to the Prelate’s claim:

Nwachukwu said: ”The insinuation that troops are complicit in the kidnap incident is not entirely premised on any findings of investigations and, therefore, cannot be swallowed hook line and sinker.

“This allegation, therefore, raises some pertinent questions which are still unanswered.

“Given our professional disposition and zero tolerance for any misconduct in the Nigerian Army, we will take this weighty allegation seriously and approach the Prelate and the Methodist Church to unravel the basis for the allegation.”

Nwachukwu explained that given the spate of insecurity in the Southeast, the question to ask is: “Was the issue reported to the unit covering the area? Did the Methodist Church take the NA into confidence while negotiating the ransom with the kidnappers?”

The Army spokesman insisted that “no formal complaint has been received by the unit”.

He added: “More worrisome is the fact that it was alleged that the ransom was paid in less than 24 hours. Was the ransom paid to troops? These are questions that beg for answers.

“Moreso, the NA unit has not received any debrief from the Prelate of the Methodist Church.

“It is, therefore, important to state that troops are deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB), Okigwe and in front of the Abia State University, Uturu and no information was made available to them or to 14 Brigade or any other formation, except the information making the rounds in the social media.

“It must be clarified that troops’ deployment in the Nigerian Army is not done with considerations for ethnic affiliation.”

    Prelate’s ordeal:

Narrating his ordeal, the Prelate said: “They abducted me, the Bishop of Owerri and my Chaplain and took us to the bush and were torturing us. It was in the process of that torture that I hit my right eye on a tree. Even when blood was flowing and I was soaking my eyes with a handkerchief, they didn’t feel like anything happened.

“All they said was that we should follow them. That they were not actually against Nigerian citizens but against the government, that the government is a bad government.

“They said the day they will see the President or any of his representatives, they will chew him raw.

“I said I am a churchman, I am not a government official. They said okay, ‘that is what has saved you. We would have killed you outrightly without asking for any ransom but now that you are a churchman, let’s go inside the bush.’

“I trekked up to 15 kilometres but I knew that we were rig rolling, going up, going down and eventually at 11 pm of that day, they said ‘okay now, we can negotiate.’

They said each of us will pay N50 million and that we are going to pay N150 million. I thought it was a joke. I said we were going to pay N10 million and they said what? ‘Don’t say that.’ They lifted up their knife to cut me, I said please hold on.

“I said we will pay the N100 million. After some time, they said where is the money and I said this is Sunday night, how can we get money this night and you know that there is sit -at-home in Igboland. We can’t afford the money now. Be patient till morning, we will make contacts.”

He disclosed that he got scared when the kidnappers lost patience and ordered him to lie down.

The Prelate added: ”One of them raised a knife to cut me while another pointed a gun at me to show that they were serious.

“I told them we would raise the money. But the irony of it, where they were situated, Nigerian soldiers were there at Lomara junction and these boys were going behind them. The abductors were parading us around the bush until we settled at a place.

”The leader (of the gang) asked for five Ghana-must-go bags and that N20 million should be put in each bag. While some left to pick the ransom, four others waited and monitored us with guns.

“Around 5:30 pm, the youngest boy who I think is a younger brother to their commander said ‘Oga congratulations, you are free, you can go now. We have got our money, you can go. Let me show you the road.

“They took us to the old road. They told us that after buying enough weapons, they are going to bring all those people that were driven away from Zamfara, Katsina, and Sambisa Forest, that they are all coming to locate themselves in Igbo land and deal with us.

“He said do you know Ibadan Expressway? We are in all the bushes there, we are also in the Southsouth. We are waiting for the slightest signal, we will finish you people and take over this land.

He called on the government to take decisive action.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls the Methodist Church in Uk had issued a statement on the kidnap of the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria.

The statement reads: “We thank God for the safe release of the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Rev Dr. Samuel C. Kanu Uche, the Bishop of Owerri, Rt. Rev. Dennis Mark, and the Prelate’s Chaplain, Very Rev. Jeremiah Shittu, by gunmen whilst on official duty in Abia state after attending an event on Sunday 29 May.

“We pray for others in Nigeria who have recently been abducted and are still being held, and those anywhere in the hands of violent kidnappers.”
