Lagos woman declares daughter missing, accuses BRT driver of abducting her

An unknown driver working with Lagos Bus services Limited is being charged with the alleged abduction of 21-year-old Lagos based fashion designer.

The lady whose name has been given as Bamise Ayanwole was said to be missing after she boarded a LBSL bus popularly known as Blue BRT at Chevron area of Lekki on her way to Oshodi on February 25, 2022.

The family of a 21-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwole, has raised the alarm over her alleged abduction by a driver of the Lagos Bus Services Limited.

It was gathered that the fashion designer boarded the bus at 7:30 pm but felt uncomfortable when the driver asked her to take a sit at the back seat.

Still feeling uncomfortable, Bamise sent out voice notes and video clips to express her displeasure to one of her friends on WhatsApp.

The friend who spoke on condition of anonymity explained what transpired thereafter in the bus as explained to her by Bamise

“On her way home, the driver picked up two men and one woman. This made her calm down a bit. Then she told us she would alight at Oworonshoki. We called her and noticed something was unusual about the way she was talking. We tried to reach out to her again but her phone was unreachable; then we waited a bit, thinking it was probably (due to a) low battery, only for her parents to contact us on Sunday that Bamise wasn’t home yet and since then we have been at the Oshodi BRT Terminal 3. We were told to sit and wait for the driver to come. The driver did not show up,” the source added.

In the voice notes and WhatsApp messages obtained from her friend’s phone, Bamise was heard saying that after being picked by the driver ,the BRT hasn’t picked any other passenger.

Bamise was said to have made a short video showing an unclear image of a driver and what looked like the vehicle number plate.

Bamise’s mum was seen in a viral video pointing to a blue BRT bus claiming it was the same bus her daughter had boarded on the fateful day.

“This is the vehicle that Bamise boarded. It has been parked. They say they cannot find the driver. Bamise boarded the vehicle at Ajah and said she was coming to Oshodi. The vehicle got to its destination but the child did get home. We can’t find her. They must find Bamise for me. I didn’t tell her to go to Lagos to die,” she said

Upon interrogation, Bamise’s elder brothet said he sensed a case of kidnapping because the driver of the bus is now at large.

“From my little investigation, I discovered that the company does not have proper documentation of their drivers. We learnt that the driver moved from where he claimed to be living over a year ago and his guarantor doesn’t live where he claimed to be living. The company is trying to push us aside and keep it away from the press. Our parents are aware but they aged, so we had to convince them that all is well. But we have been having sleepless nights.”

However, the police said they were investigating a case of a missing person, adding that the suspect’s guarantor had been arrested.

The Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos Bus Services Limited, Afolabi Olawale, said the company would await the outcome of the police investigation before making its position known.

Police deny terrorists’ abduction of policemen in Borno

Police in Borno on Friday denied media reports that terrorists abducted two policemen in an attack at Magumeri Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Abdu Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that the police was not affected in the attack.

“The terrorists did not loot drugs, but took away bed spreads, towels and outpatients chairs in an unused small clinic. They also set fire on the surrounding grasses which did not touch the building,’’ he said.

Umar explained that the terrorists suspected to be from a faction of the Islamic West Africa Province, also set a GSM tower ablaze and stole a generator.

  • ICC prosecutor seeks investigation into abduction of Nigerian schoolchildren

ICC prosecutor seeks investigation into abduction of Nigerian schoolchildren

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to seek authorisation from the Pre-Trial Chamber of the court to open an investigation into cases of abduction of schoolchildren in several parts of Northern Nigeria, closure of schools, and the persistent failure of Nigerian authorities at both the federal and state levels to end the abduction.

The ICC prosecutor’s decision followed a petition sent to the court by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

This development was disclosed today in a statement by SERAP deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

SERAP had in the petition dated 4 September 2021 urged the ICC prosecutor, Mr Karim A. A. Khan, QC, to “push for those suspected to be responsible and complicit in the commission of these serious crimes, to be invited and tried by the ICC.”

In the petition, SERAP argued that, “The severe and lifelong harms that result from depriving children the right to education satisfy the gravity of harm threshold under the Rome Statute.”

Responding, the ICC prosecutor in a letter with reference number OTP-CR-363/21, and dated 22 October 2021 confirmed to SERAP that “the criteria for opening an investigation into a string of abductions and closure of schools in some parts of Nigeria have been met.”

The letter signed on the prosecutor’s behalf by Mark P. Dillon, Head of the Information and Evidence Unit, read in part: “On behalf of the Prosecutor, I thank you for your communication received on 13/09/2021, as well as any subsequent related information.”

“The preliminary examination of the petition is considered complete. Under Article 53 of the Rome Statute, the next step in the judicial process is for the Prosecutor’s Office to prepare and submit a request to the Pre-Trial Chamber for authorisation to open an investigation on Nigeria.”

“Once submitted, the request will be made publicly available on the Court’s website: www.icccpi.int.”

“Your communication will be forwarded to the relevant team to be analysed, together with other related communications and other available information, in the context of any future investigations. We thank you for your interest in the ICC.”

SERAP deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare said: “By this decision, the ICC prosecutor has taken a significant step toward ensuring that those suspected to be responsible for grave crimes against Nigerian schoolchildren are exposed, and held to account.”

“The victims of these crimes deserve justice. Impartial justice and reparation will deal a decisive blow to impunity of perpetrators, and improve access of Nigerian children to education. SERAP will work closely with the ICC to achieve these important objectives.”

SERAP’s petition to the ICC prosecutor, read in part: “Senior government officials know well or ought to know that their failure to prevent these crimes will violate the children’s human rights and dignity.”

“The absence of any tangible and relevant investigation or prosecution in Nigeria suggests that the authorities are unwilling or unable to carry out genuine investigation or prosecution of those suspected to be responsible for and complicit in the abduction of students.

The consequences of persistent abductions of students, closure of schools, and the failure to provide safe and enabling learning environments despite federal and state authorities yearly budgeting some N241.2 billion of public funds as “security votes”, are similar to those of the offences in article 7(1).”

“More than 10,000 schools have been reportedly closed in at least seven northern states over the fear of attack and abduction of pupils and members of staff. The states are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Niger and Yobe.”

“Among the string of abductions in Zamfara was the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in the town of Jangebe in February. The latest abduction comes after widespread reports of abduction of students and closure of schools in many states of Nigeria, including in north-central Niger State where some 91 schoolchildren were abducted.”

“An estimated 1.3 million Nigerian children have been affected by frequent raids on schools by suspected terrorists. Some 13 million Nigerian children are out of school nationwide. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), more than 1,000 students have been abducted from schools in northern Nigeria since December 2020.”

“Families and parents have reportedly resulted to paying the terrorists thousands of dollars as ransom to secure the release of their children. An estimated $18.34 million was reportedly paid in ransoms between June 2011 and the end of March 2020.”

“Nigerian authorities have also failed and/or neglected to satisfactorily address the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014, which prompted the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. According to reports, more than 100 of those girls are still missing.”

Nigeria is a state party to the Rome Statute and deposited its instrument of ratification on 27 September 2001, thus giving the court jurisdiction over crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed on its territory or by its nationals.

The ICC prosecutor decided to seek an investigation after undertaking a preliminary examination of the cases of abduction of children in the country.

A three-member panel of ICC pre-trial judges will consider whether to grant the prosecutor’s request, once it is submitted, to let the ICC step in as a court of last resort.

Judges will rely on the materials submitted by the prosecution to determine whether there is a “reasonable basis” to proceed. Victims and their families may also make their views known to the pre-trial chamber.

If the investigation identifies suspected perpetrators of the crimes alleged in SERAP’s petition, prosecutors can ask judges to issue international arrest warrants, which can remain under seal to help authorities apprehend those charged.

As an international court of last resort, the ICC is mandated to bring to justice people suspected to be responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide when national courts are unable or unwilling to do so.

  • School Attacks: Group cries out, demands enhanced synergy against abduction

School Attacks: Group cries out, demands enhanced synergy against abduction

    By Our Correspondent

The National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) has condemned in strong terms the continuous invasion of schools and abduction of school children by bandits for pecuniary interests in the country.

This was contained in a statement issued by the National President of the group, Mahmud Abubakar in Abuja on Monday stressing that the trauma it puts students into alone doesn’t allow students to concentrate in their studies, instead fear of the unknown.

Comrade Abubakar said that it was high time government utilized every resources at its disposal to tackle the menace adding that it portends grievous danger for the country where schools are regularly invaded and innocent students abducted and killed without human pity.

“The situation is pathetic. We can’t explain how school children suddenly became the target of the hoodlums, kidnappers and bandits which is unprecedented in the history of the nation. These slain children are human beings and innocently died painfully for doing nothing wrong. Is it a crime to embrace education in Nigeria?

“We have lost many students to bandits and kidnappers, and seemingly, no serious efforts to curtail the menace on ground, instead, security that is meant for the entire nation is being enjoyed by only the privileged elites leaving vulnerable citizens to their fate”, Abubakar stated.

He added that the most shocking episode is hearing that government often negotiates with the abductors rather than bringing them to face the wrath of the law to bring the menace to rapid end.

“More worrisome is the episodes that government always negotiate with the criminals instead of bringing them to face justice which suggests that the criminals are not hidden but known and can be identified.

“Imagine the trauma these innocent children are continuously subjected to by ambushing them at gunpoint by gunmen at such tender ages.

“We as a students’ group expects that by now, all the soldiers in the military barracks, Airforce personnel will complement the conventional Police and invade the evil bushes and forests where the heinous crimes are committed on daily basis.

“It must be noted that the activities of kidnappers, abductors and bandits may cripple education in the country if no corresponding actions are taken in no distant time” the national president cautioned.

He recalled that recently, a sitting governor, Nasir el-Rufai who distinguished himself and showed exemplary leadership by enrolling his children in public schools as expected have withdrawn them for safety considering that they will be the targets of the crooks.

The group also commended the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu on his relentless efforts to take education to the next level, but regretted that the activities of the criminals may make all his positive innovations counterproductive if state of emergency is not declared on security in the nation soon.

The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to use every possible means to counter the activities of the criminals who are bent on making his administration unproductive and the society ungovernable despite his robust policies.

It will be recalled that in addition to numerous abduction of school children in the country, the Emir of Kajuru, Alhaji Alhassan Adamu, palace aides alongside his family members totaling 10 persons were abducted by gunmen recently in Kajuru in Kaduna state. According to reports, those abducted included three women, two of the Emir’s grandchildren and three aides.

He said, “I was sleeping when the incident occurred, but according to my personal assistant and the escort, the attackers were between eight and 12 in number with black uniform and bulletproof jackets. Surprisingly, they carried out the attack at a regular police checkpoint. However, the policemen, who were supposed to be at that checkpoint, came a few minutes later from where they had gone to eat”, he told Punch.

The President of the Esan Youths Organisation, Kingsley Ohens, urged the government to engage vigilantes in combating kidnappers and hoodlums.
