Obasanjo’s k-leg visits APC as Fulanis plot 2023 dark horse – By Mideno Bayagbon

For those who thought it was a settled matter in the All Progressives Congress (APC), that its presidential flag bearer would come from the South, in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election, a rude awakening greeted them last week. Two new, but related twists, surfaced sending shock waves into the camps of aspirants. The two events amount to what former President Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo would describe as K-Leg to the aspirations of Southern candidates.

First, the new Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu, came out to announce, against the reported instructions by President Muhammadu Buhari and perceived agreements of party leaders, that NO, the party has not concluded on which part of the country its flag bearer will emerge from. Before now, it was assumed, as a concluded matter, that the party’s candidate will emerge from the South.

Secondly, from being whispers in dark crevices, the light shown on the rumour that Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan, is the hidden hand of the Fulani North which it intends to unveil as the dark horse, the consensus candidate of the power bloc whose ascendancy came with the foisting of former Nasarawa State Governor and Senator, Abdullahi on the party as chairman.

Before now, the brash, poorly performing governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, was the only one from the North, who had indicated interest in, and indeed tried to canvass votes to contest for the candidacy of the APC. Most of the other aspirants were from the South. This appeared in line with the convention in the party whereby offices and positions are rotated between the South and North. The Southerners who lined up so far include Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Jagaban, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Transportation Minister. There are also Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; former Abia State Governor and now Federal Minister, Ogbonnaya Onu; Labour Minister, Senator Chris Ngige. There are also former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha; former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; Cross River State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade with his oversized ego, are also posturing for the past. So was former Governor and now Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

Lurking in the wings is Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who most thought was the hidden hand of the mafia around the President, who they had wanted to impose as the consensus candidate of the party. Of course, there is Goodluck Jonathan, our former President who, most are surprised, is even considering contesting for the position, against popular opinion. The Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio and Minister of State, Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, as at last week, were carefully still weighing their options and were still consulting. They too, may join the crowded field of aspirants from the South. It is becoming a comical circus out there in the APC.

Most people were first introduced to the new twist in the APC flag bearer race when Senator Orji Uzor Kalu came out smoking with anger that the two other zones in the South, that is the South West and South South were fielding candidates for the race when it should be clear that there should be a concerted effort and agreement to get the position zoned to the South East. Kalu who was jailed for corruption but was sprung out on technicalities, huffing with self righteous indignation, withdrew his hat from the ring. Accusing the Southern aspirants of bad faith, he carefully threw in the spanner in the wheel: if they won’t allow the South East run alone for the position, then it should be flung open to all.

Hidden in all this make belief anger, if you ask me, is an attempt to position himself for a Vice Presidential slot to a Northern candidate. Not just any northern candidate, but one from the North East. Senator Kalu copies Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s argument, that the North East, like the South East, has never produced a Nigerian President. And surprise, surprise! Who is from the North East interested in the position? The soon-to-be unveiled Senate President, Ahmed Lawan! It would be recalled that both himself and Kalu were roommates at the University of Maiduguri, before Kalu was expelled for presenting dubious certificates. But now, Orji Uzor Kalu in pretending to fight for a President of Nigeria of Igbo origin, is attempting to eat his cake and have it. Selling his people and still attempting to make all believe he is fighting for them.

In all of this, it is clear the manipulating hands, who have seized power in the APC, are not relenting in their wish to foist on the nation whoever they want as the President of Nigeria. They have been very frontal, calculative and daring in their push. First, it was to be former President Goodluck Jonathan. The reasoning then was that the nation was on the brink of an implosion arising from the insensitive, parochial religious and ethnic zealotry championed by President Buhari. They felt there was the need for a unifying figure to be enthroned to avert it. Jonathan, then riding high in public opinion, was to be the ideal candidate for this reason, and for the fact that he can only serve a four year term. Then power will return to the Fulani and conservative wing of the North.

With public opinion seriously now against a Jonathan coming back as candidate of the APC, with all the implications for the party, a rethink then threw up a Godwin Emefiele. A fawning Emefiele has been the good boy who made their easy access to the Central Bank of Nigeria, in the last seven years, possible. They rewarded him with automatic renewal of his tenure and ensured that his was the first reappointment President Buhari made after he was sworn in for second term. Over the years they have backed him to be another Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to usurp supervising authority over most of the economic sectors. That is why Emefiele as CBN Governor has often attempted to lord it over several ministers. Now, it is Ahmed Lawan who is poised to make a formal declaration this week.

The South, as usual has shown its true colours: leaderless, spineless, unorganised and void of strategic thinking and thinkers. With Tinubu checkmated and Osinbajo of no great political consequence yet, what can a Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi do to counter this bold move to damn all consequences and have the Fulani North retain power for another eight years?

Senior party officials spoken to seem to believe though that Lawan being positioned as the dark horse is part of the game the party is playing with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Both are delaying announcing the zone its presidential candidate will emerge from. The thinking being that if the PDP zones its candidate to the South, the APC might just reconsider, depending on the perceived strength of the opponent’s candidate, to zone its own to the North. That is where a dark horse Lawan will fit in.

But most people do not buy this. They say any attempt to get the North to rule for another eight years will not be acceptable. The people of the South and indeed all Nigerians who have endured the gross, incompetent misrule of the Buhari years might just rise up in anger and the consequences will be anybody’s guess

Be security conscious, APC National Chairman advises Nigerians

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) has advised Nigerians to be security conscious.
He gave the advice shortly after a courtesy visit to the Emir of Keffi, Dr Shehu Chindo-Yamusa at his palace in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Monday.
“We have the responsibility as government to take care of the citizenry’s security but security is everybody’s business.
“If anyone is doing anything wrong, you have the responsibility to report to the nearest authority.
“If you keep quiet, you are endangering the peace and tranquility of the country and your family.
“You allow one little thing to happen and you don’t know how it will go. So everyone should see himself or herself as agent of security in this country,” he said.
He also appealed to Nigerians to shelve their differences, be law abiding and love themselves, irrespective of their religious or tribal differences.
“I enjoin Nigerians to love their neighbours as they love themselves as ordained by the holy books.
“If we abide those simple divine instruction, we will have tranquility and we will have stability and we will witness rapid development in the country,” he said.
The APC Chairman expressed gratitude to God for the state of Nigerians who were able to carry out the 30 days Holy Ramadan fasting, and celebrate the Eid-El-Fitr in good health.
The Emir, Dr Shehu Chindo-Yamusa, lauded the people of Keffi Emirate and muslims across the country for the successful completion of the holy ramadan fasting.
He also called for Nigerians to be proactive with regards to security and their active participation in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
The traditional ruler also stressed the need for farmers in the emirate to go to their farms since the rainy season had commenced.
  • 2023: Why APC should adopt Jonathan as party’s candidate – Group tells Buhari, Adamu

2023: Why APC should adopt Jonathan as party’s candidate – Group tells Buhari, Adamu

A political pressure group, Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPD), has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to adopt former president Goodluck Jonathan, as the party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

The National Coordinator of the group, Mr Ralph Okorie, who made the call on Monday at a news conference in Abuja, urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to endorse the Jonathan project.

“There is a need for experience and continuity. The two enjoy the most cordial relationship that had ever existed between an incumbent and his immediate predecessor,” he said.

Okorie said the call for Buhari to endorse Jonathan was to ensure that candidates without clear cut vision do not emerge as the party’s flag-bearer in the 2023 presidential election.

He said that allowing candidates without clear cut vision to get into the Presidential Villa in 2023, would not only be suicidal but would be like aiding and supporting incompetence over competence.

According to Okorie, the persistent calls from different parts of the country for Jonathan to contest the 2023 presidential election indicates that Nigerians have genuinely and passionately join the support for Jonathan.

“We acknowledge that the ripple effects of good governance is multi-generational, hence, the CNPD for Jonathan call on all Nigerians to support this agenda.

“We strongly believe that this administration is working round the clock to address the two major problems of security and economy bedeviling this country.

“It will be counter-productive to bring an amateur to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari at this material time.

“As vanguards for Nigeria’s development, peace and unity, we want to reiterate that, our beloved country cannot afford to have a regional champion as a flagbearer.

“It is imperative that Dr Abdullahi Adamu as the National Chairman of APC will use the best man for the job to win this election bearing in mind that anything short of a Jonathan ticket will cost APC the presidency in 2023,” Okorie said.

He noted that the achievements of Jonathan stood him out among all the aspirants that have so far indicated interests for the presidential election and describing him as one of the most outstanding presidents the country had produced.
“For instance, within two weeks, Jonathan grounded the activities of Boko Haram insurgency and gave Nigeria a credible election adjudged by domestic and international observers as free and fair.
“Nigeria’s economic trajectory under his presidency was globally recognised as his national economic prowess earned the country the status of the largest economy in Africa.
“Today, some of the talented people who worked under his government are championing global economic transformations.
“Nigerians have not forgotten the glorious days of GEJ with Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as the minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga, Akinwumi Adesina, Mohammed Pateh, to mention but a few.
“We are still yearning for the immense contribution of Akinwumi Adesina who was the brain behind Jonathan’s agricultural transformation agenda that saw the increase in agriculture produce, value chain and foreign exchange earnings from the sector.
“In terms of foreign policy, Nigeria under Jonathan saw huge foreign direct investment, FDI, and infrastructure developments due to his economic liberalist and friendly dispositions,” Okorie added.
The CNPD coordinator also said that the Nigeria diasporic policy enhanced over 24 billion dollars in remittances under Jonathan which made Nigeria and Nigerians the pride of Africa and the world.
He added that Jonathan’s return to power would not only enhance economic, foreign policy and security situation but would provide favourable environment for national engagement and dialogue.
Okorie, however, called on Jonathan to listen to the numerous calls and observe the political mood across Nigeria as he would give impetus to APC’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Adamu cautions against division in APC, ahead of 2023 poll

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned members against divisive tendencies, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Adamu said this on Wednesday at the opening of the 11th APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Transcop Hilton, Abuja.

He reminded the party’s stakeholders of the experience of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 and how it lost the presidential election in 2015 due to disunity.

Adamu said that the APC must be guided against complacency by remaining united if it must continue in its winning ways.

He also cautioned the party’s past governors against undermining serving governors in their states, saying that they remained the party’s leaders in their respective states.

“The APC Constitution states that serving governors are the state leaders, therefore the past governors must act like states men and provide guidance,” Adamu said.

He said that the party constitution only recognised serving governors as their states leaders, adding that there was no need for competition and rivalry between past and serving governors.

He said that the ego causing disunity between past and serving governors and other leaders of the party in some of state could pull the party down if not properly handled.

This, he said, could affect the party’s electoral victory in the 2023 general elections.

Adamu said going forward the party’s slogan would be APC first.

He, however, added that the National Working Committee (NEC) was open to suggestions on how to move the party forward, saying that it doesn’t have monopoly of knowledge.

Some dignitaries at the meeting included President, Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC governors, state chairmen and other members of the National Working Committee (NEC).

APC governors were lead to the meeting by the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).

The APC NEC is the second highest decision making organ of the party.

Governors jeopardizing party’s progress-APC National Chairman, Adamu

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu has alleged that some current and past governors of the party are bent on jeopardising the party’s progress with their actions and inactions.

Adamu made his position known when giving his opening speech at the 11th National Executive committee (NEC) meeting held at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja

The meeting is being attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and other critical stakeholders who are members of the NEC.

He declared that state governors are leaders of the party in their states, saying the APC constitution does not have provision for dual leadership in the states.

Adamu then acknowledged the position of serving governors as leaders in the respective states but begged them to accord the party all necessary respect that is due to it for progress to be made.

Don’t allow a repeat of Zamfara, Rivers APC disaster in Akwa Ibom, group warns

Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, DAIA has cautioned the new Abdullahi Adamu leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC against repeating same mistakes that led to the loss of Zamfara and Rivers States in the 2019 General Election.

Speaking against the background of the party’s decision to recognize inaugurating Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State chapter when the issues of the congresses that led to his mergence were still under judicial review, the group in a statement by its coordinator, Ibok Essein.

“What happened in Zamfara and Rivers States are still very fresh in our memory and it would be catastrophic for us as a party if we did not learn any lesson from the issues.”
Noting that the same issues of upholding the constitution of the party and of the Electoral Act were now at play in Akwa Ibom, the group called for caution.
“The fact is that a significant proportion of the party membership including at the grassroots and leaders have issues with the emergence of Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as chairman of the party.
“These members have in adherence to the rule of law taken up their case in the courts and it is a shock that even before their right to fair hearing is adjudicated that their rights have been abridged.
“Our warning is that the party must take heed so that the disaster of Zamfara and Rivers do not befall us in Akwa Ibom.”
Noting that the caution had become more important in the wake of the increased mobilization of the grassroots for 2023 victory, the group continued:
“Our grassroots in Akwa Ibom have more than ever been energized for victory in the forthcoming 2023 General Election. What they are asking is for things to be done properly for them to deliver Akwa Ibom from the yoke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,” the group said.

Adamu’s first move falters as group condemns his inauguration of Akwa Ibom chairman

A group under the aegis of Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, DAIA has condemned the inauguration on Tuesday of a new chairman for the Akwa Ibom chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC by the new national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The group in a statement expressed shock over what it claimed as the deliberate overlook of a court injunction restraining the party from recognizing and inaugurating Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the chairman of the party.

“What has happened is that the leadership of the party has started on the path of illegality and against the desire of the mainstream of the party,” DIAA coordinator, Ibok Essein said in a statement.

“So long as there existed an injunction against the inauguration of Ntukekpo, it behooved the party’s leadership to have waited for the judicial process to run its course in order not to infringe on the right of everyone concerned and that is why we are especially pained by this development.”

Expressing concern that elements from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP were dictating the situation in the party, DAIA added.

“We are concerned that the godfather of the Ntukekpo is the minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, a man who as governor so much destroyed the progressives in Akwa Ibom.

“It is unfortunate that he has manourvered himself into our party and is now destroying our party from inside,” the group said.

BREAKING: APC National Chairman, Deputy resign from Senate

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, on Tuesday, resigned as Senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District.

This was even as the newly elected Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari, also resigned as lawmaker representing Borno North District.

The resignation letters of both lawmakers were read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, until his election as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), chaired the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

Kyari, on the other hand, was the Chairman of the Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Senator Adamu’s letter reads, “It is with utmost respect and appreciation I inform you that consequent upon my victory as National Chairman at the just concluded convention of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the 26th of March, 2022, I hereby resign formally as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District with effect from 1st April, 2022.

“I feel a sense of duty and obligation to convey through this letter, my appreciation for the cooperation and guidance I received from you as Chairman of the National Assembly throughout my official and private association with you.

“As I leave the Senate, I cannot easily forget the change and style of leadership that you brought since becoming the Senate President of the Ninth Senate.

“Your ability to forge the deep-rooted bi-partisan approach on all issues which you chaired deliberations speaks volumes of your chemistry as a leader.

“Since your assumption of the Chairmanship of the National Assembly, you have worked so hard for the Assembly to be seen to work with the government and not against it.

“Indeed, you have roundly proved at every stage that the three arms of government are truly arms of the same national government.

“You have stirred the National Assembly to do the bidding of our great party without prejudice to the other parties irrespective of their representation.

“In so doing, you have been able not to only carry your colleagues at the leadership level of the Senate, but endeavored to be a family head in the real sense of the word to all members of the Ninth Senate.

“My resignation will leave me with full memories of the solidarity and camaraderie that you have been able to forge over the eleven years I’ve been in the Senate.

“To say I will miss you and my colleagues in the Ninth Senate will be an understatement, but I gain consolation in the fact that my call to a higher pedestal of service will keep us all within reach of one another.

“Kindly convey my wishes to all my colleagues that they should kindly spare some time in joining hands with us at the headquarters of our great party, the APC, to do the needful in our efforts to deliver the 2023 Presidential and General Elections to our party and its followers.

“I also request that you convey my gratitude to all our colleagues and chamber staff.”
