Tambuwal seeks to be president in 2019 on the platform of the opposition party, PDP.

Tambuwal who addressed journalists after the meeting which lasted for about 50 minutes and ended few minutes to 9.p.m. said he was in Abeokuta to consult with Mr Obasanjo in respect of the 2019 polls.

Obasanjo is one of the critical leaders of the country and it is necessary for me to consult with him concerning the 2019 polls, particularly on my aspiration to contest for the presidency of Nigeria.”

Recall that Obasanjo led Nigeria on the PDP platform (1999-2007). He left the party in the build up to the 2015 general election. Although he supported President Muhammadu Buhari then, he has since fallen out with the president and is working against his re-election.

The governor expressed optimism that Nigeria could still attain greater and enviable height particularly if the citizens vote rightly in the 2019 polls.

He advised that every component part of the nation should be given an opportunity and sense of belonging in the Nigerian context.

Tambuwal also urged political gladiators not to make the 2019 election a matter of “do or die”.

He described the clamour by the youths for increased participation in the governance process in Nigeria as ” justified” considering the high percentage of their population in the country.

Tambuwal called on the present leadership to accord them more opportunities to participate in governance process.

The Sokoto governor is one of the leading aspirants for the presidential ticket of the opposition party, PDP.

He is believed to enjoy the support of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who has a huge influence in the PDP and was able to influence the choice of Port Harcourt as venue of the party’s presidential primary.

The PDP presidential primary holds in the Rivers State capital on Saturday and Sunday.

  • 2019: Secondus leads PDP delegation to meet Obasanjo in Abeokuta today

2019: Secondus leads PDP delegation to meet Obasanjo in Abeokuta today

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) is to meet with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta on Saturday ahead of 2019 polls.

The National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus, made this known in Abeokuta while addressing journalists after a meeting between the executive members of the party in Ogun and the PDP NWC.

The Chairman who described Obasanjo as a “warrior” who had fought many battles, explained that the consultation had become necessary to get direction from the former president and tap from his wealth of experience.

Despite explanations by the Federal Government on how the recovered Abacha loot will be spent, Secondus picked holes in its management, alleging it was being arbitrarily distributed instead of being budgeted for.

The disbursement of the money to poor and vulnerable Nigerians, according to the Vice President, will begin this July.

Maryam Uwais, who heads the Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government explained recently that the Federal Government and the World Bank had signed an agreement to use the money to fund the SIP.

According to Uwais, 18 states, which have been enrolled, will benefit from the programme. They are Niger, Kogi, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Cross River, Bauchi, Jigawa, Gombe, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Anambra.

The remaining 18 states have been excluded because the state governments had not put in place the appropriate platform through which to implement the programme.

But Secondus insisted that: “Mother of all corruption is happening under Buhari’s government.

“This is the first time a government in Nigeria, not even under the military, that cash will be withdrawn from the bank and distributed to party cronies.

” The Abacha returned loot is being shared by the incumbent government, without putting it in the budget,” he alleged.

Secondus gave assurance that the party would win the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti state.

The PDP chairman who alleged that there were plans by the All Progressives Congress(APC) to take Ekiti state by force, said ” no amount of intimidation can subvert the will of the people.”

Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun says his administration is constructing a 20,000-capacity amphitheater to host the annual drum festival on Friday.

Amosun disclosed this at this year’s edition of the African Drum Festival Conference, Workshop and Exhibition held at the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta.

The theme of the Conference, Workshop and Exhibition is “Drumming for Advancement, Drumming for Socio Economic Development.’’

The governor, who said that the amphitheater would be ready by December, expressed confidence that the 2019 edition would be held at the facility.

Amosun also stated that the three-day festival would be extended in the next edition, noting that the time allocated to the participants to perform was short.

He further disclosed that the benefits from the previous editions of the festival had led to the introduction of an intellectual training programme that would serve unborn generations.

Amosun also said government was using the festival to create wealth for the youths as well as to promote social and economic development.

The festival started on Thursday and would come to a close on Saturday.

  • 2019: Obasanjo to host Falae in Abeokuta on Tuesday

2019: Obasanjo to host Falae in Abeokuta on Tuesday

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is scheduled to host a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae as part of strategies for the 2019 general elections.

Recall that the duo once contested against each other in 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy. However, Obasanjo won that election.

Impeccable sources confirmed that Falae, who is the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, and Obasanjo would strategise on how to bring all third force elements under one banner.

A source, who is privy to the meeting, said since Buhari had ignored all warnings by Obasanjo and other ex-generals not to seek a second term for the sake of the country, many of such political meetings would be taking place.

The source said, “It is obvious that Buhari has failed in his three years in office. He spent about four months of 2017 in the United Kingdom on health grounds and still wants to run for a second term for selfish reasons.

He has failed to improve the lives of Nigerians but continues to give excuses for his own failings. He has also refused to endorse a younger person to succeed him.

We have thus decided to set the plan in motion for his ouster through the ballot. Obasanjo will meet Chief Olu Falae with a view to uniting the third force and repentant politicians from the APC and the PDP are welcome to join.”

When contacted, the Personal Assistant to Chief Olu Falae, Capt. Moshood Raji (retd.), confirmed the scheduled meeting with Obasanjo.

He, however, said the meeting was a private one and would therefore not disclose it agenda.

Raji said, “It is true that Chief Falae will be meeting with Baba (Obasanjo) but I don’t know the purpose of the meeting because it is a private meeting.”

  • FG pledges discount to farmers on equipment, feeds acquisition – CBN Boss

The Federal Government will provide cheap funds and discount of not more than five per cent to farmers who wants to acquire agricultural equipment and feeds.

The Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, made this known on Thursday at the official launch of Mitros Ofada Rice in Abeokuta.

Emefiele said the cheap funds would help conserve foreign exchange as “we will no longer depend on foreign exchange to import agricultural produce.’’

The apex bank governor, who identified lack of fish feeds as a major setback for fish farmers, also said the Federal Government would offer support to them.

He commended Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun for the initiatives to create jobs and boost food security.

“The Central Bank will continue to support anybody who makes an attempt to grow our agricultural sector.

“ This is because by doing this, we provide food and jobs for our people and in doing this, we grow our economy.

“Ogun State continues to demonstrate the urge to support the focus of the government to create jobs and grow the economy.

“ A country that does not take agriculture seriously is naturally an unserious country.

“We have a lot of people who wants to go into fish farming but the major problem is fish feeds. Be rest assured that if you identify yourself, you will be counted and we’ll support you,” he said.

Also speaking, Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Bagudu, said the Federal Government had been taking steps to revamp the agricultural sector so as to ensure food sufficiency.

Bagudu, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Agricultural Commodities and Production, said all the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, have the capability to grow rice.

“With rice, I believe we can achieve what we have achieved, even with a commodity like crude oil because around the world, about 600 million metric tonnes of rice are produced every year, and in Nigeria, we are still having a little less than 10 million.

“Our land size estimated by the Rice Farmers Association indicated that there are about 12 million rice farmers”.

“This suggests that even if an average yield per farmer is the modest five tonnes, that means we should be producing 50 million tonnes, not under 10 million tonnes we are currently producing”.

“ Nigeria has the ability to produce rice competitively,’’ he said.

Amosun, in his speech, said that the inauguration of mitros rice is an investment in the mission to rebuild the state.

He said the state had attracted over 70 per cent of industrial investment, adding that his administration would continue to partner with the Federal Government and private sector in boosting food sufficiency in the country.

The governor added that production of Mitros rice had also helped in creating jobs for farmers in the state.

“The Mitros ofada rice and other rice that we grow are planted, processed and packaged by farmers from Ogun, ” he said.

He urged the people of the state to partronise Mitros rice during the festive period instead of foreign rice.

The newly launched rice comes in 50kg, 25kg,10kg, 5 kg and 1 kg bags.
