Keke driver returns ‘missing’ ₦2 million to passenger in Aba

Emmanuel Obodoezie, a tricycle operator at the Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia, has returned ₦2.04 million to a trader who inadvertently left it in his vehicle after disembarking on Wednesday.

Obodoezie, in an interview with journalists, recounted that he had picked up a woman along Powerline Road, who later got off near the Free Zone area, known for its fish market.

Obodoezie mentioned that he informed the woman her fare was ₦300, but she only provided ₦250, which he accepted without any objections as she departed.

He noted that he did not check the back of his tricycle after she exited and, thus was unaware that she had left her bag behind.

The driver has been receiving commendations from the traders at Ariaria for his integrity amidst the challenging economic conditions in Nigeria.

“Because of the bad roads, my machine was bending to one side and to another side until the bag at the back of my machine fell of.

“Then people who saw it fall began to call me to wait that my bag in my machine had fallen off.

“I stopped and thought it must be the bag of the woman who I dropped off some minutes ago,” he said.

He said that before he stopped, the person who picked it opened it and, seeing it was money, wanted to take some from it, but that he refused to allow him and others to take the money.

He further explained that he told one of them to hold the money while he would go and bring the owner.

“I went in search of her and God being so kind, she was already coming to search for the tricycle operator who conveyed her and her goods to the market.

“‘When I found her, I went to show her where I kept the money for her to take it,” he said.

The owner of the money, Mrs Chika Aloysius-Iw, told newsmen that she was to go to the bank with the ₦2.04 million in her bag.

“After alighting, I forgot that money on top of the seat of his machine and left.

“When I got to my stall, I remembered that I had forgotten money in that tricycle.

“I knew the face of the man but did not know where he stayed so I went in search of him along the road where he stopped for me,” Aloysius-Iwu said.

  • Abia govt tackles JUSUN over workers’ welfare

Abia govt tackles JUSUN over workers’ welfare

The Abia government has urged the state’s judiciary union leaders to end their strike, which had resulted in fresh protests and prayers in Umuahia on Wednesday.

The Abia Information Commissioner, Mr Okay Kalu, made the appeal while responding to questions by newsmen on the protests.

He expressed shock that such a protest was happening when the parties were still negotiating.

JUSUN had, in November 2024, embarked on an industrial action to protest unpaid salaries and entitlements by the state government.

The strike which began on November 1 was called off on November 11 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by JUSUN and the Abia Government.

Another strike began on Jan. 2 due to alleged government’s failure to implement the MoU. This action was later called off following the release of N310 million to the union by the state government.

The union, however, resumed its strike on Wednesday, Jan. 22, insisting that the N310 million released so far was a far cry from N900 million contained in the official Audited Wage Bill document for Judiciary workers, approved by Gov. Otti himself.

The union leadership say that workers will return to work whenever the government completes the N900 million payment.

This payment, is to enable them pay their workers their October minimum wage arrears, November and December 2024 salaries with other entitlements.

JUSUN members were seen carrying flags and praying in front of the State High Court complex in Umuahia which was locked.

The Information Commissioner, expressed surprise that JUSUN members were protesting while they were still engaging government in negotiations till late Tuesday night.

The commissioner said that Abia Judiciary was very independent, stressing that their salaries are paid by their office, and not by the Executive arm.

“There is a disconnect somewhere. They can’t be making demands and counter demands unless there is a problem with the union leadership.

“They cannot be talking about 13th month today because the governor said he paid that when he paid them N310 million.

“My advice to the union leaders is to come clean and think seriously about the welfare of their workers.

“Their fate is in their own hands and not really in the hands of the government, because government has done its part.

“If the leadership of the JUSUN is playing politics with the fate of their workers, they should stop playing such politics,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Chinedu Eze, the Chairman, JUSUN, Abia Chapter, told newsmen at the State High Court complex that their members came to pray to God to intervene in their matter with the government.

He said that their members were dying because of lack of funds to take care of themselves and their families, hence their need for God’s intervention.

“One of our members lost her husband last week, and the woman died on Monday.

“We see that such deaths are not a good sign among us, so we decided to call for God’s intervention as Christians that we are.

“We are having a prayer session for God to keep and protect us till the end of this trouble,” Eze said.

He said that it was not in their hands to pay their workers because government had paid only N310 million to the workers, which was not complete.

He said that if the state government had made the complete funds available for them to pay, they would have paid the workers.

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti has appointed a native of Edo State, Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service for the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu made the announcement immediately after the State Executive Council meeting on Monday, January 13.

Kanu noted that due to Ojeikere’s dedication and outstanding performance, the then-state government decided to retain him in its service.

Over time, Ojeikere has climbed the ranks, serving as a director and later as a permanent secretary, before being appointed Head of Service.

“This is a landmark appointment, considering the fact that he is not an indigene of Abia State,

“However, His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, strongly believes in meritocracy.

“To him, there is no dividing line between an Abia citizen and a resident. Once you live in Abia, you are part and parcel of the state,” Kanu stated.

  • Court orders forfeiture of N228.4m traced to ex-Gov Orji

Court orders forfeiture of N228.4m traced to ex-Gov Orji

A Federal High Court in Abuja has made an order of interim freezing and forfeiture of the sum of over N228.4 million linked to former Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia to Federal Government on allegations of money laundering.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on an ex-parte motion moved by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s lawyer, Fadila Yusuf, also directed the EFCC to make publication of the order on its website and Daily Trust Newspaper.

According to Justice Nwite’s order, interested parties should show cause within 14 days of the publication of the order. The judge adjourned the matter until Feb. 3 for report of compliance.

Mr Orji also served as two-term senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District before his retirement from active politics.

The anti-graft agency had, in the motion ex-parte marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/03/V/2025, brought the suit pursuant to Section 44(2)b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

The motion dated Dec. 30, 2024 and filed Jan. 2 by Yusuf, was also brought under the inherent jurisdiction of the court.

The lawyer sought an order granting an interim freezing and forfeiture of the sum of N228, 497, 773. 12 domiciled with Keystone Bank set out in the schedule attached to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

She also sought “an order authorising the commission to make publication of interim freezing/forfeiture order made by this honourable court on the EFCC website and Daily Trust Newspaper and the interested parties to show cause within 14 days of the publication of the order.”

The lawyer, in her five-ground argument, said the money described in the schedule was subject matter of investigation by the EFCC and found in the possession of Effdee Nigeria Ltd.

She said it was reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

“Effdee Nigeria Ltd is alleged to have conspired with others to defraud Abia State Government to wit: conspiracy, abuse of office, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering and diversion of public funds.

“Effdee Nigeria Ltd, in whose possession the monies were found, is reasonably suspected to have conspired with Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji, the former Governor of Abia State, some officials in the former governor’s administration and his family members,” she said.

Yusuf said they were being investigated by EFCC for the allegations following intelligence report received by the commission against Orji.

According to her, there is need to preserve the monies pending investigation and/or prosecution.

Tahir Ahmed, a litigation officer with EFCC, said sometimes between 2016 and 2017, the commission received an intelligence report against Sen. Orji, some officials in his administration and his family members.

He averred that Effdee Nigeria Limited, a sewage and waste disposal entity, was used by the former governor, some officials in his administration and his family members for the diversion and laundering of Abia Government funds while Orji was in office.

“The company was used to siphon funds and divert monies with the ald of some officials of Keystone Bank.

“The Intelligence report was assigned to the Economic Governance Section of the commission for investigation,” he said.

He said the team commenced Investigation into the case which led to the arrest of Austin Akuma, the Divisional Head of Keystone Bank Pic in Umuahia who was discovered to be the middleman between the contractor (Effdee Nigeria Limited) and Erondu Uchenna Erondu, Special Adviser, General Duties to the former governor.

He alleged that the banker, in a statement made upon words of caution at the EFCC office, stated that it was agreed between himself (Akuma) and Erondu that the contractor’s company, Effdee Nigeria Limited, would be used to received funds from Abia State Government accounts.

“Thereafter the contractor would distribute these monies to several accounts of specific customers of the bank to be provided by the banker after which these various customers would withdraw cash and return same to the banker who in turn takes the cash to the Special Adviser in the Government House,” he alleged, attaching the statements made as Exhibit EFCC 1.

According to him, letters of investigation activities were also written to Keystone Bank and analysis of the statement of the above account of Effdee Nigeria Limited revealed substantial inflow from various agencies in Abia State Government leaving a balance of N228, 497, 773.12.

Ahmed, however, said that investigation was still ongoing in relation to the allegations received against the suspects.

He said there was need to preserve the res to prevent the dissipation of the above mentioned monies pending the conclusion of investigation and conclusion of the multifarious criminal complaints and ongoing investigations pertaining to the suspects.

After Yusuf moved the motion, Justice Nwite, who said the application was meritorious, granted the prayers.
