Abia LG Chairmen-elect issued certificates of return

The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), on Sunday, issued Certificates of Return to the mewly elected 17 Local Government Chairmen.

The Chairman of ABSIEC, Prof. George Chima, issued the certificates at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia.

Zenith Labour Party clinched 15 Chairmanship positions, while the Young Progressives Party won two in Saturday’s council polls.

In a speech at the brief ceremony, Chima charged the chairmen to align their programmes with the rebuilding agenda of the Gov. Alex Otti’s administration.

“I wish you all success and urge you to carry out developmental projects in your various LGAs.

“We are going to be evaluating you and would be publishing the works of the most performing chairmen,” he said.

Chima urged the chairmen to work closely with their deputies because “you know the implications of changing your deputies without following due process”.

He said that during the commission’s tour and screening process it was observed that many people were not familiar with their specific wards or the locations of their electoral units.

“This lack of awareness could limit participation in either local governance or electoral activities,” Chima said.

He said that ABSIEC had prepared educational materials that would be displayed at the headquarters of the 17 LGAs to enlighten the people about their various LGAs.

Responding, the Chairman of  Umunneochi LGA, Mr Sunday Afuruike, commended ABSIEC for conducting a free and fair election and thanked the electorate for their votes.

“My colleagues and I are poised to deliver the dividend of democracy to the people like the governor is doing,” Afuruike said.

  • BREAKING: ZLP wins 15 out of 17 LGAs in Abia LG election

BREAKING: ZLP wins 15 out of 17 LGAs in Abia LG election

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has won 15 out of 17 local government areas in the local government election conducted in Abia State on Saturday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Abia LG election was conducted amidst late delivery of materials and other logistics hitches that delayed voting.

Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof Chima George, disclosed that ZLP won the 15 LGAs while announcing the results of the election.

Prof George announced that the Young Progressives Party (YPP) won in the Osisioma and Ugwunagbo local government areas of the State.

The Abia local government election results were announced by ABSIEC Chairman at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, where he said said that the chairmanship and councillorship polls took place in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and that the exercise was “free fair and credible”.

“We have carried out the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to undertake. It was not an easy task, but we went out on our way to create awareness about the elections across the state.

“It must be noted that, in recent times, this commission has not conducted an election where over 12 political parties took part, this on its own is a plus to the commission,” George said.

He stressed the election was a demonstration of the commission’s dedication, focus and efficiency. He expressed joy that the commission successfully completed, in just two months, a task that typically required six to 12 months of effort.

“I congratulate the winners and the losers too, because in any election there must be winners and losers. The most important thing is that Abia has been peaceful and I want the peace to continue.

“I appreciate the security agencies for their support, political parties for playing the game according to the rule,” George said.

TNG reports ZLP won in Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia LGAs, while the remaining two LGAs of Osisioma and Ugwunagbo were won by YPP.

The local government election in Umuahia and Aba areas of Abia took place amidst late delivery of materials and other logistics hitches that delayed voting. In places where materials came early, the voter turnout was impressive but low in areas where materials were delivered several hours behind schedule.

It was also observed that there was large turnout of voters in areas where a Chairmanship or Councillorship Candidates hail from.

In Umuahia, voting commenced between 11am and 12.45 pm in many polling units as against 8am, following the delay in the delivery of election materials.

Voter turnout was largely impressive at Aba Park Polling Unit and Polling Units 001, 002 and 018 at Umuwaya Road Primary School and Urban Ward 1 Umuwaya Primary School Polling Unit 29.

In an interview with NAN, some voters expressed disappointment over the delay in the delivery of election materials. They, however, expressed delight over the peaceful conduct of the exercise at their polling units.

A civil servant, Mr Chiwetara Okwesiri, said that he cast his vote around 2p.m. Okwesiri said that, although the delay initially dampened his zeal, he was ultimately glad to vote, saying that he was impressed by the  peaceful atmosphere.

A trader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also said that he had a smooth experience and was able to vote for his preferred candidates.

“At first, it seemed like the election might not hold, but I am happy it went ahead as planned, and I was able to participate,” he said.

At the Abia University Primary School, Abayi, Aba, the turnout was  poor. Mr David Chimezie, an All Progressives Grand Alliance agent at Ward 3 Unit 090, expressed concern over the poor turnout of voters.

He said that only three persons voted at the unit, which was concluding endorsement of the results at the time NAN visited. He, however, said the election went on smoothly without any problem or interferences.

Mr Celestine Ogbonna said he got to his polling unit at about 11 am.

“By that time, the materials had not come and after waiting for about one hour and not seeing anything, I went back home,” he said.

At Ayaba Umueze Primary School Ward 3 unit 013, Mr Happiness Amaechi, a Zenith Labour Party agent said the turnout was massive at the unit.

He said that the polling officers came around 1pm and that voting ended when ballot papers got exhausted.

As at 4:45pm, the party agents and polling officers at the centre were still counting the votes. At Abayi Amaugwu Ward 3 Unit 010, the election started at about 2 pm and ended before 4 pm.

It was learnt that only few persons that waited for the materials were able to vote at the unit, while many others, who lacked the patience to wait, retired home earlier.

Abia LG polls: Aba residents blame ABSIEC for low voter turnout

Earlier, a cross-section of Aba electorate berated the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) for its alleged poor showing in the Saturday’s chairmanship and councillorship election in the State.

The people blamed the low voter turnout on the late arrival of ABSIEC staff and electoral materials at the polling units, which delayed the commencement of the exercise across the state.

Correspondents, who monitored the election in Aba South, report that many prospective voters, who turned up to exercise their franchise, became frustrated and left after waiting for several hours without the presence of ABSIEC officials.

At Ngwa Ward 4, materials were delivered at about 4.10pm and accreditation and voting commenced by about 4.38pm

Some voters, who spoke to NAN on the development, complained about the late delivery of election materials and officials. They alleged that the delay was delibrate on the part of the commission.

Mr Udochukwu Eze expressed joy that he finally cast his vote after waiting for a long period of time.

”I voted at Unit 13 Ward 4 and I thank God that the election did not only take place today but was very peaceful too.

“Although ABSIEC came late and many had gone home after waiting for so long but a determined voter had no option than to wait.

“I know that some are just coming from their homes to vote, while some waited nearby for the arrival of materials,” Eze said.

Another voter, Mrs Agnes Ide, expressed dismay over the delay and called on the State Government to do something so that people would not lose confidence in the electoral process.

“I almost went back home and if I had left, nothing would bring me back,” Ide said.

There were no security personnel at the polling centres visited but the exercise was generally rancour-free. Reacting to the complaints, Commissioner II in charge of Voter Education and Enlightenment in ABSIEC, Dr Kelechukwu Okere, said “it is not true that materials arrived late at the polling units”.

Okere told NAN that the commission made adequate arrangements for the seamless distribution of materials and election officials to ensure a smooth exercise.

Gov Otti rates conduct of Abia LG election

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed satisfaction over the smooth electoral process in Saturday’s Local Government Elections in the State.

Otti spoke in an interview with newsmen after casting his vote at about 12:19pm at Ahiafor Umuru-Umuehim Nvosi Polling Unit 017 in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

He also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout and orderly conduct of the exercise. The governor was accompanied to the polling unit by his wife, Priscilla, who also voted in the same unit.

He said that, aside from minor disruptions in Obingwa and Ohafia LGAs, the process was largely peaceful, with security agencies deployed to maintain order where needed.

He encouraged the electorate to vote for credible candidates, who could deliver their campaign promises.

He also reiterated the importance of choosing leaders based on competence rather than political affiliation.

Otti said that council elections were particularly significant because they impact rural communities directly, allowing residents to elect candidates they know and trust.

“The point remains that political parties are platforms for running elections and like you would notice, a lot of political parties have problems but irrespective of that, we have advocated that people should vote candidates that are credible and competent to deliver.

“If you want to continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy, if you want to continue to enjoy performance then, you need to vote people like that.

“I believe that this election would synchronize with that call I’ve been making because people have also been talking about it, that they are going to vote people who have capacity.

“And it’s a local government election. We all know our people,” Otti said.

He further expressed the hope that the elections would reflect the people’s desire for capable leadership and reinforce the delivery of democratic dividends at the grassroots level.

The local government election, which suffered initial hiccups over the late arrival of materials and officials, later gathered momentum.

Absence of materials, voter apathy mar Abia LG polls

The late distribution of electoral materials and arrival of officials at the polling units marred the conduct of Saturday’s Local Government Elections in Abia.

Correspondents, who monitored the exercise, report that the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) did not distribute materials to the polling units as at 11 am against the 7am slated by the commission.

According to the commission, eletoral materials were scheduled to arrive at the polling units at 7am, while accreditation and voting would commence by 8am.

At Umuahia South, Osisioma, Aba North and Aba South LGAs, neither the electoral materials nor election officials were seen at some of the polling units visited.

Some ad hoc staff were seen milling around the LG Headquarters waiting for election materials. There was also low turnout of voters at the various polling units visited across the state.

Prospective voters who were scanty in number, were seen at some of the polling units waiting for  materials and voting to commence.

In Umuahia South, Aba North, South and Osisioma LGAs, voters, election officials and security personnel were conspicuously absent at the polling units visited.

Some of the polling units visited included Polling Units 009, 015 at Avonipupe Primary School and Ipupe Village Hall Polling Unit 008.

Others were Polling Units 011 and  012 at Ogbo Central School as well  as Polling Units 007, 013 and 017 located at the Umuosu Community School.

In an interview with NAN, two prospective voters in Ubakala, near Umuahia, expressed disappointment over the failure by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission to ensure the smooth conduct of the polls.

Mrs Joy Eze said that she had been monitoring her polling unit to know when the elections would eventually start.

Eze, who operates a hairdressing salon, however, said that she decided to go and attend to her customers while waiting for the exercise to commence.

She also said that she was eager to cast her vote in order to support her preferred Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates.

Another resident, Mrs Onyinyechi Ishmael, said that she was not interested in the polls because her previous experience showed that votes do not count in elections in the country.

“If our votes count like the leaders claim, I believe there will be signs that election will actually take place.

“Unfortunately, there is no sign that election will take place at the various polling units around my neighborhood,” Ishmael said.

In Aba, Mr Collins Ogbonna,  resident of Ward 3, said that he came out by 8 am to his polling unit 007 to vote but did not see any election officials.

Ogbonna attributed the poor voter turnout to “voter apathy and fear of gunmen” in Aba.

He called on the residents to come out and vote to ensure the right persons assumed political leaderships at the grassroots.

The Deputy Chairmanship Candidate for Zenith Labour Party in Osisioma LGA, Mr Rufus Aguwa, told NAN that the eletoral materials had been brought to the council headquarters for the polls.

Aguwa further said that the representatives of other parties inspected and confirmed the materials to be complete.

He, however, said that the materials had yet to be shared “because the LGA, which has about 301 polling units, is complex.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Voter Education and Enlightenment in ABSIEC, Dr Kelechukwu Okere, has described the report of absence of materials at the polling units as “pure falsehood”.

Okere told NAN that the commission made adequate arrangements for the seamless distribution of materials and election officials to ensure a smooth exercise.

CAN reacts as Otti imposes tax on churches in Abia

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Abia State chapter has expressed its disapproval of a tax policy imposed on church signposts within the state.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Governor Alex Otti-led administration recently introduced a tax on churches for their signposts.

Expressing their concerns, the religious body highlighted the unique position of Abia as a Christian state, a state recognized as divinely favoured.

They found it unfortunate that Abia, a state with such a strong Christian identity, would be the sole state in Nigeria levying taxes on churches for their signposts.

The association, in a letter titled “Taxation of Church Signposts in Abia State,” dated October 22, 2024, and signed by the State CAN chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, and the State CAN secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, called upon the Governor to reconsider this policy to prevent the perception that the state government is opposed to the Church.

The letter read: “We write to express our displeasure over the state government policy of compelling churches to be paying taxes on their signposts.

“As a Christian and God’s own state, it is regrettable that Abia State is the only state in the whole federation that is taxing churches on their signposts.

“We therefore passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind the policy to avoid compelling the body of Christ in the state from seeing the regime as anti-Church.

“Furthermore, leaders of the Christian body in the state can be invited for a roundtable discussion on the way forward over this very little but delicate issue.

“While looking forward to your favourable response, accept our esteemed assurances of our unalloyed support and prayers.”

Why Nigerian youths should join politics – Gov Otti

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has urged Nigerian youths to join politics to decide their fate and make a difference. Otti gave the advice during Church Service at The Transforming Church (TTC), on Sunday in Abuja.

He explained that every society needs the leadership it deserves, saying: “If you sit back and say politics is for politicians, the politicians will decide everything for you.

“I am challenging all the young people here. Don’t shy away from politics. That is where decisions about your future are made.”

Quoting Psalms 62:11, the governor said that power belongs to God and advised the youths against shying away from power.

“You can make a lot of changes if you have power, and that is what politics will give you to create the changes you want to see in the lives of your people.

“This is because, holding a political office affords people the opportunity to affect the lives of more people than one can imagine,” he said.

Otti said that he left the banking sector in 2014 and joined politics to make a difference by doing things differently.

He said that as the governor of Abia, he could affect the entire population of the state by just one action.

He called on Christians not to pray alone but compliment it with hard work, adding that that way, their dreams and aspirations would come through.

During the sermon, the lead pastor of the church, Rev. Sam Oye, who spoke on the goodness of God, called on Nigerians to keep their faith strong and not to give up on their dreams.

Reading from Psalm 119:68, Oye stressed the need for people to learn how to be good to others.

He thanked the Otti for visiting the church and reiterated the commitment of the church in praying for those in positions of leadership.

The former governor of Abia and the senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu has disclosed that he stopped using his private jet due to high cost of fuel and other issues.

In a video that surfaced on social media, the lawmaker explained that, following the economic hardship, he currently patronizes commercial flights.

He disclosed that he had to ground the jet to drive revenue by leasing it for the airlift of officials of oil companies.

He said, “Honestly, I have stopped using my private jet since 2nd of August 2024. I want to maintain that till we sort out the differential of workers in Nigeria and West Africa their salaries. Because buying fuel and the rest of them, I don’t need to explain to you, my dear, for now, I have grounded the private jet to do some other business for oil companies.”

While disclosing his alternative to prosecute future travels, he added, “I want to maintain that way. Don’t ask me again there are commercial planes that are on schedule, and I will use them to the glory of God.”

Chairmanship and councillorship elections will be conducted in 184 wards in the state.

Chima told the stakeholders that the essence of the meeting was to assure them of the true desire and determination of the commission to ensure that right things were done.

Giving further details, he said that the political party primaries were scheduled to hold between Sept. 25 and Oct. 4, while the submission of list of candidates would hold from Oct. 5 to Oct. 7.

  • Abia pensioners beg Otti to revisit MoA on retirement benefits

Abia pensioners beg Otti to revisit MoA on retirement benefits

A group of Abia pensioners has appealed to Gov. Alex Otti to revisit and rescind the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed with their leaders and pay them their remaining retirement benefits. The group, operating under the Abia Pensioners’ Forum, a pressure group within the state chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), made the appeal on Wednesday in Umuahia.

The Coordinator of the group, Mr Okey Kanu, made the appeal while briefing newsmen on the governor’s claim that his government had defrayed the arrears of pensions left behind by Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration. Kanu implored the governor to pay the balance of their pension arrears and gratuity.

He said that before the MOA, many of their members were cumulatively owed up to 60 months, while the last payment of gratuity was in 2002. He commended Otti for the regular payment of their monthly pension since April and his developmental strides in the state.

Recall Governor Otti had in April said the state had paid all the pension arrears owed to at least 12,500 pensioners, dating back to 2014. The Governor disclosed that over N9 billion was spent from the N10 billion set aside by the government to offset the  accumulated pension arrears.

Meanwhile, Kanu said that the governor was free to liquidate the balance of the retirement benefits by instalments, if the government could not do so in one swoop. He said that the state government and NUP officials had signed an MOA, in which their arrears of pension and  gratuity were forfeited to the government.

He said that the minutes of the enlarged NUP meeting of January 11, referred to by the government in the MOA, showed that the issue of gratuity was not mentioned. Kanu, a legal practitioner, insisted that what was deliberated on was the issue of pension arrears.

He said: “In effect, signing the MOA containing the forfeiture of our gratuity in addition was ultra vires to NUP officers, hence not binding on our members. To date, the MOA has remained a secret document to our members.

“We gathered that the state NUP officials had written two letters to the State Government, requesting a meeting to discuss gray areas of the MOA. One of such gray areas, according to the NUP officials, is that the issue of gratuity was never part of their negotiation and agreement with the government.”

Kanu said that the arrears of pension and gratuity were  not negotiable “because they are personal, statutory and their legitimate entitlements in the service”. He contended that gratuity was savings from their salary, while they were in service and was supposed to be paid to them immediately on retirement.

According to him, it is unfathomable how the State Government can negotiate with vulnerable pensioners, who are deprived and famished over the years.
