    Just In: Hoodlums set ablaze Anambra Federal lawmaker’s residence

    Hoodlums have set ablaze the House of the former deputy speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and the current member representing the Ihiala federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

    The House consisting of a fully furnished duplex, with a bungalow in the same compound, was completely razed down, while properties in the houses were not also spared.

    The lawmaker said the incident happened at about 1 am on Tuesday in Mbosi, his home town.

    He stated that no life was lost in the attack.

    He also did not state if he suspected anyone or whether it was politically motivated.

    The incident occurred when the lawmaker was in Abuja carrying out his legislative function.

    Woman sets self ablaze over N70,000 loan in Abeokuta

    Tragedy struck in Abeokuta on Saturday as a middle-aged woman, popularly known as Mama Dada, set herself ablaze in her rented apartment at Oke-Keesi, Itoko area of Abeokuta.

    An eyewitness, Rasheed Aina, who spoke with newsmen on Sunday, said that the woman was burnt beyond recognition, as the entire building was also razed.

    According to Aina, who resides close to the deceased’s residence, explained that the woman killed herself after she was unable to pay back a loan she took from a popular micro-finance bank.

    “I learnt that the loan was to the tune of N70,000,” he said.

    A former member the micro-finance bank, who identified herself simply as Mrs. Adeogun, stressed that ‘unprecedented embarrassment’ usually befell anyone who refused to pay back the borrowed money at the agreed date.

    “If you refuse to pay them back at the agreed date, you will be treated like trash; you will be embarrassed in a big way, in a manner that your children will forever be ashamed of. I know what I’m saying because I used to be a member of the group.

    “One must be a member and a committed one at that before you can be given a reasonable amount of money.

    Secretary of the Community Development Association (CDA), Mr. Micheal Babawale, said that the deceased was owing the sum of N70,000, adding that because she was unable to pay back the money, she then sent her last born to buy fuel.

    “She stylishly discharged the small boy, locked herself up inside the room and wet everywhere with petrol, including herself, and set the whole place on fire,” he said.

    The remains of the deceased had been deposited at the State General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told NAN that he had not been briefed about the incident.

    Unknown gunmen sets INEC office ablaze in Enugu state

    Unknown gunmen have set ablaze the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu state.

    It was reported that the incident happened at INEC office located at Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area, LGA, Enugu State.

    A security man was shot dead and part of the building was destroyed by the gunmen.

    However, a source from the village told our correspondent that they quickly called the men of the Fire Service, who arrived quite on time but could not go near the premises to extinguish the fire due to the dead body they sited around.

    “The building would not have been razed because we called the fire service men. But they were afraid of going inside because of the person that was shot dead.

    “Everybody was really afraid. They felt the guys were still around. But we knew that the gunmen had left”, a villager said.

    Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of INEC, Mr. Victor Okafor said the hoodlums only succeeded in burning the security house of the building, stressing that the commission’s materials were not affected by the fire.

    He regretted that people still find pleasure in burning INEC facilities despite the efforts put in place by the commission to make people’s vote count in the forthcoming elections.

    Unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have razed down a police station at Arondizuogu in Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State.

    TheNewsGuru learned that the incident, which started on Tuesday morning, led to the demise of a police officer.

    The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Michael Abattam, confirmed the attack to newsmen but was unable to give details.

    19-year-old, friend arrested for setting ex-lover’s house, girlfriend ablaze

    Nineteen-year-old Jemila Ibrahim and her friend, Fatima Mohammed, have been detained by the personnel of the Lagos State Police Command for setting her ex-lover’s house ablaze at the Monkey Village, FESTAC area of the state.

    It was gathered that Jemila and her friend visited the residence of her ex-lover, Mohammed Yusuf, around 5.30pm on November 18 and set it ablaze, while his girlfriend, Rabi was inside.

    Yusuf, who got to know about the tragic incident, rushed home to rescue Rabi and took her to hospital, where she died on Saturday around noon.

    TheNewsGuru gathered that Mohammed left Jemila over purported infidelity on her part.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Monday, said policemen from the Satellite Division arrested the suspects, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, for further investigation.

    The statement read in part, “The duo of Jemila Ibrahim and her friend, Fatima Mohammed, of Monkey Village, who accompanied Jemila to commit the heinous crime, have been arrested by the police operatives attached to the Satellite Division of the command.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, who condemned the crime, has ordered that the matter be transferred to the SCIID, Panti, for discreet investigation. The CP also vowed to go after those, who engage in crimes and social vices, and to rid the state of criminals and criminality.”

    The CP, however, urged the residents of the state to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

    Sotitobire Miracle Church in Akure, Ondo state, has been set ablaze by irate youths over speculations that the corpse of a one-year-old boy declared missing was exhumed in the church.

     

    It has not been confirmed if the body of the child was found in the church.

    TheNewsGuru gathered that the police are said to have intervened in the chaos reportedly shooting an operator of a motorcycle taxi and arresting some journalists who were covering the incident.

    Back in November, Gold Kolawole the baby, was declared missing during a church service.

    According to sources within the church, the boy who was at the children’s department of the church could not be found after the service.

    Modupe Kolawole, mother of the child and member of the church, said she suspects foul play in the disappearance of her son.

    Alfa Babatunde, founder of the church, was arrested following the incident, and he has been in the custody of the DSS.

    He was arrested based on a petition written by the parents of the missing child.

    The Ondo state police command have asked residents to disregard the rumour.

    In a statement, Femi Joseph, the command’s spokesman, said it is not true that the body of the missing child was exhumed in the church.

    ”The Ondo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public particularly the People of Ondo State that they should disregard the rumours making the rounds that the body of a recently declared missing boy in the state has been exhumed from Sotitobire church in Akure,” he said.

    ”It is most unfortunate that this misleading information spearheaded by a popular TV station, has ignited a spontaneous reactions from the people leading to wanton destruction of properties and injuries to many. The church building was also set ablaze by irate youths.

    ”Some of our officers despatched to the scene to contain the situation were pelted with stones with many of them sustaining injuries. Their patrol vehicle was also badly damaged. This rejoinder became necessary to disabuse the minds of many Nigerians who might have fallen for this wicked lies and propaganda.”

    Hoodlums set ablaze primary school containing electoral materials in Benue — EO

    All electoral materials for Mbalom ward in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue, were in the early hours of Saturday burnt by armed hoodlums.

    According to a witness, the hoodlums on arrival fired shots in the air before setting on fire the RCM Primary School Aya, housing the materials.

    Mrs Ngunan Yongo, the Electoral Officer for the local government area, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone conversation.

    The EO said the materials were yet to be distributed to polling units in the ward when the attack occurred.

    ” The entire materials are burnt,” she lamented.

    However, no official of the commission including ad hoc staff were hurt.

    She explained that final decision over the conduct of the elections in the area would be communicated later.

    Mr Thaddeus Ujah, a senior staff of the commission, also confirmed the early morning attack.

    “Right now I can’t say anything, I am overwhelmed; we were not expecting anything of that nature. I am short of words. I can’t see some of my people, they ran into the bush, some of them got injured. For me, the most important thing to me now is to get those people and take them back”.

    Ujah said he was posted newly in the area and could not ascertain the exact number of ad hoc staff that were missing until he takes a roll call.

    Man sets lover, two others ablaze over ‘minor’ disagreement

    An Indian man, Jalil Khan, allegedly set ablaze his 40-year-old lover, Sangita Suresh Devre, her married daughter and infant granddaughter in Nashik on Monday, police said.

    While the nine-month-old infant died, the two women suffered 80 per cent burn injuries. They were admitted to the Nashik Civil Hospital, where their condition is stated to be serious, Madhukar Kad, in-charge, Panchavati police station, revealed to Afternoon Voice.

    Khan, who is married, has been on the run after the incident.

    Khan had been having a romantic affair with Devre, for the past one year. They reportedly had a heated argument over some issue on Sunday, the official said.

    Police revealed that Khan came to Devre’s home in Panchavati locality past midnight on Monday and poured kerosene on her, her daughter and her granddaughter, before setting them on fire and fleeing the scene.

    Efforts are being made to arrest the suspect.
