Facebook says to curb foreign Ads related to abortion referendum in Ireland

The Facebook social network said on Tuesday that it would not accept foreign ads related to the referendum of abortions that would be held in Ireland on May 25.

The eighth amendment to the Irish constitution recognises the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn.

It prohibits abortion unless the life of a pregnant woman is at risk.

The May 25, referendum would reveal whether the Irish people want to remove the eighth amendment.

“Facebook will no longer be accepting ads related to the forthcoming referendum if they are from advertisers based outside of Ireland,’’ the network said in a statement.

It pointed out that the company was concerned over foreign attempts to influence the outcome of the referendum.

“Concerns have been raised about organisations and individuals based outside of Ireland trying to influence the outcome of the referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland by buying ads on Facebook.

“This is an issue we have been thinking about for some time,’’ the statement said.

Facebook said the move was in line with the company’s strategy aimed at increasing transparency during political campaigns.

The move is announced amid the scandal around Facebook and the Cambridge Analytica company, which cooperated with the social network.

In April, media reported that the personal information of about 50 million Facebook users had been harvested without their permission by Cambridge Analytica.

The firm reportedly worked for multiple political campaigns and gathered data from social media accounts to develop a mechanism that would predict and influence the behaviour of voters.

In late March, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologised for the situation with Cambridge Analytica and admitted that he should not have trusted the firm.

In early April, he said that there were several mistakes that had led to the situation, adding that most of the actions needed to prevent this from happening again had already been taken years ago.

  • Court orders Trump administration to give immigrant teens abortion access

A U.S. District Court judge ruled on Monday that President Donald Trump’s administration must allow access to abortion for two pregnant teenagers who are in the country illegally, escalating a high-profile legal fight.

Judge Tanya Chutkan put her order on hold, however, to give the U.S. Justice Department time to appeal her ruling.

The Justice Department filed its notice of appeal shortly afterward to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The judge’s temporary restraining order marked the latest chapter in a legal dispute with the Trump administration over whether minors who are illegal immigrants have the right to seek an abortion during their detention.

The issue was ignited by a 17-year-old who petitioned the court in October to have an abortion, and ultimately had the procedure over the Trump administration’s objections.

In that instance, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled on Oct. 24 that the teen could have an abortion immediately, rejecting the administration’s opposition.

The two 17-year-olds in the latest legal action, known to the court as Jane Roe and Jane Poe, requested abortions, but the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement has refused to allow them access to the procedure.

In her ruling, Chutkan wrote that the girls’ “constitutional right to decide whether to carry their pregnancies to term” needed to be preserved.

She also noted they were likely to succeed on the legal merits of their case, based on the prior ruling in the higher court.

“We are deeply disappointed in the decision to grant a temporary restraining order that will compel HHS to facilitate abortions for minors when they are not medically necessary,” a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

”A pregnant minor who has entered the country illegally has the option to voluntarily depart to her home country or identify a suitable sponsor. HHS-funded facilities that provide temporary shelter and care for unaccompanied alien minors should not become way stations for these children to get taxpayer-facilitated abortions.”

I have never told any girl to have abortion- Davido

Nigerian pop star, Davido may still be engulfed in another baby mama drama, but the singer has said he has never told any girl to have abortion. Speaking in a recent interview with Guardian, he said he is not in support of having babies outside wedlock, but babies are a blessing.

In his words:” All those people out there saying I have too many babies, do you know how many babies they have killed? At least I can confidently say I have never told any girl to have an abortion. I am not saying having a baby without marriage is good, but to me babies are blessings.

When asked to talk about the myriad of rumours about him, he said people always attack him, but he hits them back with a song

“You know they always attack me, people always say s*** about me but I always hit them back with the music, which is the most important thing. People always say my dad is giving me money when was the last time my dad gave me money? All the kids came together, we bought our dad a N409 million car for his birthday”.

  • My boyfriend battered me, killed my sister for refusing abortion – woman tells court

A 27-year-old woman, Justina Dusu, on Friday told a Jos High Court that her boyfriend, Stephen Luka, got her pregnant and when confronted, battered her and killed her sister.

Dusu, a resident of Foron, Barkin-Ladi Local Government of Plateau, who stood as a witness, testified against the accused, Stephen Luka, of Tudun Wada, Jos, who is being tried over murder, assault and sexual abuse.

The accused, who has denied the allegations, is also facing a charge of attempted murder.

The accused was alleged to have attacked the two sisters on July 27, 2016 at his home, in Sabon Gari, Tudun Wada, Jos, after they went to confront him over Justina’s pregnancy.

Dusu, who is heavily pregnant, told the court, in her testimony, that the accused person, with whom she had been in a relationship since 2007, got her pregnant last year.

“I met Stephen on Dec. 2 2007, while I was still in secondary school. I later left to Abuja, but came back to Jos in May 2016.

“We met on my return and he invited me to his place sometime in June 2016, where he had sex with me.

“I later realised I was pregnant and called his attention to it; he told me he was not ready to be a father and suggested an abortion which I promptly rejected.

“I told him I would rather give birth to the baby and give to my parents than have an abortion.

“On July 25, I told my sister, late Simi Dusu, about the pregnancy and Luka’s idea of an abortion.

“She tried to reach him on phone without success and we decided to go to see him in his house.

“On July 27, we took a cab to his house, when I sighted him, we alighted and followed him to the house.

“He didn’t deny the pregnancy, but said that he was not ready to be a father, and that his parents had already chased him out of the house.

“While we were discussing, my sister stepped out to receive a phone but before she returned, he started hitting me on my head.

“When I started screaming, my sister tried to enter, but he locked the door. She forced the door open and he descended on her with a machete and killed her.

“He again returned to me and kept hitting me; I only regained consciousness at the Hwolshe Medical Centre, Jos, and received the news that my sister had died,” she told the court.

She denied engaging in a fight with her sister over Stephen as alleged by the defense counsel, and described that allegation as a “lie”.

Another witness, Rifkatu Yusuf, who is a sister to the deceased, denied the possibility of a fight between the deceased and Justina,

She said that she did not know Luka until he called her to meet him at the hospital over her sister’s condition.

After taking the witnesses, the prosecutor, Muleng Alex, prayed the court to adjourn the matter to another date, citing the long hours already spent on taking witnesses, a move the defense counsel did not object.

The judge, Justice Nafisa Musa, adjourned the matter to Feb. 28, for continuation of hearing.
