Slain Deborah: At last, Atiku breaks silence on deleted Deborah murder tweet

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has condemned the killing of Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, North-West Nigeria and at the same time explained why he deleted the tweet on the murder.

He stated these on Sunday night during a live discussion on People’s Townhall, a brainchild of Channels Television and its partners.

Atiku also said he deleted his initial tweet on the murder of Deborah because he did not approve the tweet. The Christian student was lynched in May for alleged blasphemy.

Atiku’ tweet condemning the killing of Deborah was greeted with stark criticisms but the PDP presidential candidate said he condemned the murder of the student in “subsequent statements”.

“I asked the tweet to be deleted because I normally approve every tweet. So, since I didn’t approve it, I said, ‘delete it’. If you read my subsequent statements on that murder, I condemned it.

“There is nowhere it is said or it is an injunction in the Islamic faith that you can go and take somebody’s life, nowhere, it has to be through due process,” the former Vice President said.

The deleted tweet on the murder of Deborah is one of the issues that have dogged the Atiku campaign on social media with critics asserting that the former vice-president deleted the tweet to please conservative Muslims.

  • 2023: Atiku, Tinubu should tell Nigerians their true health status now – Obi/Datti Media office

2023: Atiku, Tinubu should tell Nigerians their true health status now – Obi/Datti Media office

… says Nigerians are tired of seeing photoshopped videos/photos

The Obi-Datti campaign team of the Labour Party has declared that Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party should tell Nigerians the true health status of their flag bearers

The Labour Party also stated that the duo are not physically fit to lead Nigeria in 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a public statement issued in Abuja asking the duo to respect the electorate and quit the presidential race immediately and give way for voters to choose from among the fit and proper candidates.

“Abubakar and Tinubu should stop ridiculing the Nigerian electoral system by running in and out of hospitals for treatment abroad while withholding the truth about their true health status, still expecting Nigerian voters to look their way.

“We challenge the two candidates to unveil their true health condition to the Independent National Electoral Commission to enable the electoral umpire to make a meaningful decision on their continuing in the race.

“The office of the President is the biggest job in the land and requires that those aspiring to do the work must not just be healthy but must be seen to be so.

“By the constitution of Nigeria, the buck stops at the table of the President who takes responsibility for virtually every aspect of governance including delicate areas like that of Commander-in-Chief of the nation’s military. The occupier of such an office must be of sound mind and body.

“To do this job the candidate aspiring must not just be mentally and physically ready but his discernment must be above average at all times.

“The Obi-Datti media team finds it extremely embarrassing and insulting that spokespeople of the would-be presidents deceiving the public with lies and photoshopped images of obviously physically and mentally handicapped candidates.

“Nigerians deserve some respect from these candidates; a few days after the APC spin doctors fed Nigerians with lies about the health of its flag bearer, claiming he was in the United Kingdom attending meetings and consulting with Diasporans. He indeed was being treated for undisclosed ailments. The PDP candidate, also Tuesday, abandoned all his scheduled campaign programmes and rushed to France to attend to his health, but instead of telling Nigerians the truth, spokespeople are busy showing fake photos to deceive and distract.

“What is glaring and cannot be hidden anywhere any day is age and so long as these two candidates are economical with their true age and health status so long they will be living in denial.

“We, therefore, demand that INEC take more diligent and conscientious steps in scrutinising these candidates ahead of the election rather than feed the public with choices from incapable and challenged candidates.”

TNG recalls that the health status of the duo has been a subject of public scrutiny since both veteran politicians declared intentions to lead Nigeria in 2023.

  • 2023 Election: Atiku will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points – Aide

2023 Election: Atiku will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points – Aide

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, will not play to the gallery to score cheap political points for the 2023 Election.

This is contained in a statement by Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe.

Ibe reacting after Abubakar was criticised over alleged comments he made over his call for a northern presidency in 2023 as  Stakeholders’ Meeting in Kaduna State at the weekend.

“For the benefit of the innocent public who might be hoodwinked, what transpired was a direct question on why Atiku should be voted for by the Northern electorate.

“In answering this question, Atiku started with a joke by addressing the questioner as ‘Mr Northerner’ which is a veiled criticism of why he limited his question to the Northern audience in the first place.

“Continuing, Atiku explained without a slur, that what matters the most to the Northern electorate is a candidate who has built bridges of unity across other parts of the country and not necessarily a Northern candidate who lacks the credentials of national spread and acceptability,” he further explained.

He said Atiku “stood agile and cerebral” before his hosts at the Arewa House.

Newsmen reports that the party defended Abubakar, calling him a symbol of national unity, cohesion and tolerance who is comfortable and is loved in all parts of the country.

In a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Sunday, the party condemned the attempt to deliberately distort, doctor, misinterpret and take out of context, the comments by Abubakar at the meeting.

“For clarity and avoidance of doubt Abubakar remains a Pan-Nigerian leader.

”He has never and will never set any part of our country against the other as being mischievously hyped.

“To set the record straight, the PDP Presidential Candidate, in responding within the context of the question put to him at the event noted that he had built bridges across the country and that what Nigerians including an average northerner need was a Pan-Nigerian leader and not an ethnic champion,” the party said.

The party therefore calls on all Nigerians to remain focused on the PDP’s mission to rescue, reunite, rebuild and restore our nation on the path of peace, national cohesion and economic prosperity, which the Atiku/Okowa Presidential ticket represents.”

Newsmen reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) had accused Abubakar of only paying lip service to national unity.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media and Publicity of the council stated on Sunday in Abuja that Abubakar had resorted to ethnic ”jingo” in the face of imminent defeat at the 2023 election.

He stated that Abubakar’s recent statement to the effect that northern Nigerians did not need a Yoruba or Igbo president was the worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism ever uttered by a former vice-president.

  • 2023: Nasarawa PDP promises to deliver votes for Atiku

2023: Nasarawa PDP promises to deliver votes for Atiku

Mr Francis Orogu, Nasarawa State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the party will deliver the state in 2023 general elections for its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP Chairman stated this during an interaction with newsmen on Saturday in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital.

The Chairman was reacting to a question on the controversy surrounding the outcome of the presidential primary.

Orogu explained that the loyalty of the party was with the constitution of the party, as such, they were working seriously to ensure victory for Atiku and other candidates of the party in 2023 general elections.

He also debunked speculations the state chapter of the party had pulled out from the campaign council of Atiku.

“Nobody from PDP in Nasarawa State has pulled out from the campaign council because the party has only one Presidential candidate and we must work to deliver him.

“Everybody must make sacrifice of whatever interest to join hands to ensure the victory of our candidate.

“No sacrifice is too much to help salvage Nigeria and Nigerians from the bad governance of the current government of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the PDP Chairman added.

On the chances of PDP to reclaim power in Nasarawa State, Orogu said the chances of their party were clear because of the non performance by APC governor in the state.

He explained that in more than three years, the state governor was just starting projects across the state to deceive the people into voting for him again.

The PDP chairman said the people were wise now and coul not be deceived again in 2023.

Orogu also commended all aspirants who participated in the party’s primaries for accepting the outcome and staying to work for the winners of the elections.

He therefore, urged the voters to keep their Voters’ Cards safe to vote out non performing governments and vote-in the PDP for restoration of the lost glory and transformation of the country.

  • 2023: MURIC warns Atiku against picking Wike as running mate

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued out warnings to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, against picking Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate ahead of forthcoming general election.

MURIC has accused Wike of being a Christian bigot who had been blacklisted by Nigerian Muslims over his anti-Islamic activities and rants.

MURIC made its views known via  a statement signed and circulated by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The group said it had come to its knowledge that Wike is among those being considered by the PDP and Atiku as a possible vice presidential candidate and deemed it necessary to warn the party and its flagbearer against such a move.

“Wike is an open enemy of Islam, a Muslim-hater primus inter pareil and an unrepentant mosque destroyer,” the statement alleged.

“The extremist remarks of Wike are still on record. He declared Rivers State a Christian State contrary to the constitution,” the group’s statement reads in part.

The Islamic rights group expressed the fears that the Rivers State Governor may create a worse situation and an unconducive environment for Muslims in Nigeria if he becomes a vice president of the country.

According to the MURIC, “Wike should not be allowed to hold any post at the federal level.”

The group claimed that “Wike hates the sight of mosques” and is ready to use his office as the number two citizen of the country to destroy all mosques in Nigeria.

MURIC said that the Governor “is intolerant, unpredictable and violence-inclined” and does not have the trust of Muslims in Nigeria.

The rights group believes that Wike, who came second in the PDP’s presidential primary election, “will definitely be a bad market for Atiku.”

MURIC said that Wike does not have electoral value at the national level and for that reason should be overlooked by the main opposition party.

“We, therefore, advise Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to avoid Wike by all means,” MURIC said.

  • Why should Nigerians give you another opportunity? – Tinubu to Atiku

Following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 presidential election, an All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on Atiku to explain why he should be given another opportunity.

Tinubu made the statement on Sunday morning while congratulating Atiku for his victory at the keenly contested primary, praising his political experience and patriotism.

He further stated that the former vice president and his party will have to explain why Nigerians should give them “another opportunity, after squandering 16 years at the central government, without much to show”.

“Nigerians are yet to forget the national ruin and mismanagement of our country for 16 years by successive PDP administration and this bad memory will dog the campaign of the PDP Candidate,” Mr Tinubu said via the statement by the Director, Media and Communication of his campaign organisation, Bayo Onanuga.

The former Lagos governor also said he was looking forward to squaring up with Atiku “as a worthy opponent in the coming presidential election”.

Mr Tinubu is a frontline presidential aspirant on the platform of the ruling APC which will hold its primary next week.

With the PDP picking its candidate from the North which has more registered voters than the south, it remains unclear if the APC will be bold enough to nominate Mr Tinubu from the south as its flagbearer for the election.

Why Atiku met Obasanjo in Abeokuta

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said that he would soon officially declare his intention to contest the 2023 presidential race.

Atiku stated this on Saturday, after a closed-door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his (Obasanjo) residence, in Abeokuta, Ogun.

Recall that Atiku was Obasanjo’s vice between 1999 and 2007, and also a Presidential contestant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 polls.

Atiku, who spoke briefly with newsmen after the meeting that lasted for about an hour, said he was in Abeokuta as part of his usual visit to Obasanjo, his former boss.

He expressed assurances that he would eventually emerge as the PDP presidential flag bearer in the 2023 general elections.

“Have I ever failed to get a ticket? I’m confident that I will still get it,” he said.

When asked for his reaction to the call for the emergence of younger presidential candidates, Atiku responded, “Let the youths compete now. It is a competition. It is democracy.”

Atiku later proceeded to the palace of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, in Ake, Abeokuta, where he recalled his days in Ogun as a trained Customs Officer.

Although Atiku did not disclose his political intentions at the palace though, the traditional ruler prayed that God would grant him his heart’s desires.
