  • Abuja-Kaduna rail line now generate N1m daily- Amaechi

The Abuja to Kaduna rail line now generates one million Naira daily, Minister of Transportation Mr. Rotimi Amaechi disclosed.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Benin, Amaechi said that the feat was because of the increase in passengers that patronise the rail.

He attributed the passenger surge to the security challenges faced by commuters along the route.

‘’We are spending N56 million per month, we are getting back only N16 million. Now there is an improvement; we now make N30 million, (that is) one million Naira per day.

‘’The improvement started last month because of increase in passengers because of the kidnapping on the road,’’ he said.

The minister said that government was using the previously generated revenues on the maintenance of the coaches and other logistics.

Amaechi said that government would address the issue of touting at the Idu rail station with the expected arrival of 10 more coaches by October.

He, however, disclosed that the arrival of the new coaches would require more resources for maintenance in order to meet customers’ expectations.

Why we increased Abuja-Kaduna train fare – FG

The Operations Manager of Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, Mr. Victor Adamu has explained why the federal government increased the fare for railway transportation between Abuja and Kaduna by 57 percent.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that the Nigerian Railway Cooperation, NRC, on Monday announced the fare increment which it takes immediate effect.

However, a report by Daily Post, quoted Adamu has saying the rise in pump price of petrol, and the need to maintain and improve services of the railway stations necessitated the increase in train fare.

He said the new prices of train fare on the Abuja – Kaduna line was approved by the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, last year but implementation commenced this week.

He said: “We increased the fare because of the pump price of petrol and the need to improve our services.

“The old prices of train fare from Abuja to Kaduna were fixed and approved long before we commenced operations on the 26th of July last year. At that time, the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, was N85. But with the liberalization of the pump price last year, a litre of fuel now stands at N145. So we had to adjust to that reality.

“In that vein, the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, had to approve the new prices of train fare last year to enable us maintain our operations and improve our services. However, we waited till this week to commence implementation.”

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that before the new fare regime, the economy passengers were expected to pay N600 against the N1,050 they now pay, while the VIP passengers now pay N1,500 against the initial N900.
