Leading UK boarding schools return to Abuja

Plans are underway for eight leading UK boarding schools to return to Abuja with no fewer than 1,500 pupils currently studying at a range of preparatory, senior and sixth form schools across the nation.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Mark Brooks, organiser of the UK Boarding School Exhibition.

Brooks disclosed that top Heads and Registrars of the schools would be in Abuja on Monday to meet with parents who are considering UK boarding school opportunities for their children.

According to him, it will be an opportunity to network with schools in an informal and engaging setting.

“The event is organised by Mark Brooks Education, in association with the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, who has been visiting Nigeria for the past 15 years.

“This is an ideal opportunity to meet some of the UK’s top schools all under one roof and ask your questions.

“A wide range of schools will be in attendance such as co-ed, all-girls, international schools, prep and senior, and Sixth Form Colleges,” Brooks said.

He listed the schools as Cardiff Sixth Form College, Freemen’s School, Earlscliffe College, Lancing College, LVS Ascot, Marymount International School London, Queen Ethelburga’s and St Clare’s Oxford.

Brooks said that Earlscliffe College already had around 10 students from Nigeria in the school, adding that students feel both cared for and stretched as its approach to education particularly suits the Nigerian families.

“Earlscliffe combines academic rigour with a home-from-home environment where staff create a ‘personalised pathway’ to ensure that students have the best chance of reaching their desired university,” he added.

Just in: Finally, Nabeeha’s sisters regain freedom from Abuja kidnappers’ den

The four remaining siblings of late Nabeeha Al-Kadriyah have regained freedom kidnappers den.

Recall the sisters were abducted alongside their father early January.

Their abductors had given a deadline for the payment of ransom, and failure of the family to meet their demand led to the killing of Nabeeha.

After killing the victim, the bandits raised the ransom from N60 million to N100 million, threatening to kill the remaining sisters.

But as of the time of filing this report the girls had regained freedom and arrived their Abuja residence where they were abducted.

It was gathered that security operatives escorted them home, where they were received by family members.

The four victims are Najeeba, a 500-level Quantity Surveying student, her younger sister Nadherah, 300-level Zoology student, both of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and their twin sisters, Habeeba and Haneesa.

The uncle to the girls, Sherifdeen, confirmed the development in a telephone chat Sunday morning.

According to him, the girls’ release was secured late Saturday,” he said.

It was gathered that although the N100 million ransom placed on them had since been paid, the bandits held on to them for days putting the family in suspense until Saturday night.

In a statement signed by Sherifdeen Al-Kadriyah, the family thanked the Nigerians for standing by them during the trying and traumatic period.

“Words cannot express the immense gratitude and relief we feel at this moment. It is a true testament to the power of faith and the unwavering support and prayers from every one of you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Allah for His mercy and guidance throughout this difficult time.

“However, amidst our celebration and gratitude, we must remember and pray for those who have lost their lives during this process.

” Their sacrifices must not go unnoticed, and their families must be in our prayers and thoughts.

“May Allah grant them the highest ranks in Jannah, enveloping them with His mercy and forgiveness. May He bring comfort and peace to their grieving families, providing them with strength to endure their loss.

“Our beloved daughters have shown remarkable strength and resilience, and we are overjoyed to have them back in our arms. Their bravery and courage during their time held captive will forever inspire us all. May Allah bless and protect every one of these incredible young women and grant them emotional healing and strength in the days to come.

Police rescue, reunite kidnapped victims with family in Abuja

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it has rescued victims of Jan. 2 kidnap incident in Bwari Area Council of the FCT and reunited them with their families.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

She said the victims were rescued by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Police Command in the FCT in collaboration with troops of the Nigerian Army.

Adeh said the victims were rescued at about 11:30pm on Saturday around Kajuru forest in Kaduna State.

She commended the Inspectors-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun for the deployment of the newly inaugurated Special Intervention Squad in the area.

The FCT police spokesperson said the deployment had uplifted the existing security architecture of the FCT and brewed public confidence.

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police in charge of FCT, Mr Haruna Garba had pledged the commitment of the command to sustain the robust security deployment in all parts of FCT.

She urged FCT residents to promptly report suspicious activities in their areas to the police on 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883.

In another statement, Adeh said the command was aware of the news making the rounds about an alleged kidnap incident at River Park Estate in the early hours of Saturday.

According to her, contrary to reports, nobody was kidnapped in River Park Estate.

“One Nnandi Agu of Games Village only faked his own kidnap in an attempt to defraud his brother who lives within the said River Park Estate.

“The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing interrogation.

“While investigation is still ongoing, further development would be communicated to the public,” she said.

  • Police disrupt kidnap plans, arrest 3 suspects in Abuja

Police disrupt kidnap plans, arrest 3 suspects in Abuja

The Police on Saturday said they have disrupted plans by some kidnap gangs to abduct students and other citizens in Niger and the FCT.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said during a media briefing in Abuja on Saturday that three members of the gangs have been arrested.

He said the suspects were arrested on Jan. 17, by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) following credible intelligence.

Adejobi said the IRT on Jan. 15 received credible intelligence that a GSM number under surveillance belonging to one of the suspects called another GSM number, informing the recipient of a plan to carry out a kidnap operation.

According to him, in the GSM conversation, the suspect also told the recipient that he has invited other kidnapping gangs and promised to carry out the operation with him.

Adejobi said the suspect also called another person on phone, who was later discovered to be a member of the gang, informing him that a civil servant in their custody is a very wealthy man with a lot of assets.

He told the gang member not to release the civic servant unless he pays a minimum of N50 million ransom.

According to him, in the same conversation, the suspect said he was still carrying out surveillance on a polytechnic in Niger to kidnap students.

“Investigation has shown that the suspects have been involved in several kidnapping operations in the FCT, including some that happened in Bwari axis.

“Our operatives are intensifying efforts to rescue the kidnap victims in their captivity and ensure that other members of the gang are arrested,” Adejobi said.

The force spokesman said police operatives have also arrested a suspect on Thursday in Kaduna over armed robbery and kidnapping.

Adejobi said the arrest followed a report that a man was abducted by four armed men from his house in Abuja and driven away in his Hilux van, registered RBC 90 DL.

The four armed men were said to have blocked their victim with their Mercedes Benz car.

“But luck ran out of them as they were intercepted by police operatives at a filling station in Kaduna where three of them escaped while one was arrested with the Hilux van recovered.

“The victim was being taken to Kano, but they stopped at Kaduna where they dispossessed him of his ATM cards and transferred N500,000 from his account,” he said.

He added that investigation had revealed that two of the four armed men were based in Abuja.

Adejobi recalled that the suspect and his accomplices were earlier arrested in November 2023, but granted bail by an FCT High Court.

Adejobi denied that the suspected kidnapper was shot dead to cover up investigation.

“We are here to correct some misinformation being circulated in the social media that the Police have killed the arrested suspects to silence some facts.

“With the inauguration of Special Intelligence Squad (SIS), the game has changed, there is no need to cover up for anybody or deceive Nigerians when we have cases like this.

“For those who have been spreading rumours on social media, listen carefully now.

“The arrested suspect is still alive on a stretcher because he has bullet injury during the operation but he is alive on a stretcher,” he said.

Adejobi said the suspect was arrested in Kaduna but handed over to the Police Command in the FCT for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the police spokesman said 16 suspects have been arrested by IRT operatives and the Anti-Violent Crime Unit, FCT Command, over alleged kidnapping, armed robbery, culpable homicide and other criminal offences.

He said the suspects had all given confessional statements and providing police operatives with relevant information to ensure the arrest of other criminals.

Adejobi said five AK 47 riffles, 11 pistols, two pump action guns, one English made berretta pistol, 65 rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, and seven rounds of live ammunition for berretta pistol were recovered from the suspects.

In a related development, the Commissioner of Police in charge of SIS, Mr Ben Igwe, said operatives of the squad had been deployed to all areas of the FCT, including Bwari, which has witnessed high level of kidnapping recently.

Insecurity: Kidnapping cases in Abuja raises national concerns

The violent abduction of five young Nigerian sisters near Abuja has sparked a national outrage and raised fears about insecurity in the country’s capital.

The sisters were kidnapped at the start of the year by armed men who burst into their home just 25 kilometres from Abuja city centre, a family member told AFP.

She stated the attackers killed one of the sisters, 21-year-old Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, when a ransom deadline passed. Negotiations were ongoing for the release of the others.

Kidnapping has become a major problem in Nigeria with the increasing rise in insecurity, with gangs targeting highways, apartments and even snatching pupils during school sessions.

After public outrage over the sisters’ case this week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned what he called the “recent spate of kidnappings and bandit attacks”.

First Lady Remi Tinubu also voiced concern, while politicians and the media questioned the government’s strategy after gangs targeted parts of the heavily guarded Federal Capital Territory, which is as big as some states but run by a minister rather than a governor.

One tabloid declared at the weekend that Abuja was “under siege”.

The Nigerian risk consultancy SBM Intelligence told AFP it had documented 283 people abducted in the Federal Capital Territory alone over the past year.

Some experts believe the country’s economic crisis is driving a rise in kidnappings as desperate Nigerians turn to crime for income.

SBM analyst Confidence MacHarry said insecurity around the capital has been growing for years.

“It’s been getting worse for some time,” he said, citing a 2022 attack on a prison on the outskirts of Abuja as a landmark moment.

Gunmen bombed their way into Kuje jail and freed hundreds of inmates in the raid claimed by Islamic State-allied jihadists.

The minister for the Federal Capital Territory has urged residents not to panic and promised to find a solution.

MacHarry said the government needed a consistent approach and warned periodic crackdowns on criminals in Abuja’s satellite towns were not working.

“All the bandits have to do is lie low and buy themselves time,” he said.

Nigerian law bans paying ransom to kidnappers, but many families have little faith in the authorities and feel they have no choice.

On the night the sisters were abducted, they were at home in Bwari inside the Federal Capital Territory, according to a cousin.

Asiya Adamu, 23, described how the attackers known as “bandits” in Nigeria struck at around 9 pm on January 2.

They demanded cash but the sisters’ father Mansoor had nothing to give and offered his belongings instead.

The attackers rounded up his daughters along with a cousin and tied their hands. They also took Mansoor captive and beat the seven family members before leading them away, Adamu said.

They shot Mansoor’s brother dead when he tried to help, and several police officers were killed in a gun battle, she said.

Mansoor was released on condition he raise a large ransom within days but the struggling family could not meet the deadline and the bandits killed Nabeeha, returned her body, and increased the fee, Adamu said.

The family is still trying to negotiate, even after raising the new total thanks to an online crowdfunding campaign and the intervention of a former minister.

Adamu said the youngest of the sisters is just 14.

Her account has been confirmed by politicians. Police acknowledged the “abduction of six young girls” and said a rescue was underway, but told AFP they could not provide details for security reasons.

Tinubu came to office last year vowing to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity, including jihadists in the northeast, criminal militias in the northwest and a flareup of intercommunal violence in central states.

But critics say the kidnapping crisis is out of control.

Opposition politician Peter Obi said, “The fact that these kidnappings, killings and other reported cases of armed robbery and violent attacks are now taking place in Abuja, the nation’s capital, is a clear pointer to how insecure the rest of the country now is.”

“The trauma being experienced by this family and the blood of this innocent child should prick our conscience as leaders,” he said.

The president said he plans to address the root causes of the violence through education, but did not outline a precise strategy.

Abductions became a major problem in Nigeria in the 2000s and are now a lucrative industry.

The kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in northeastern Nigeria by Boko Haram jihadists made global headlines in 2014, but daily abductions rarely gain attention.

“Every day now you hear about a new kidnapping, even whole families,” said Adamu.

She described Nabeeha as “smart, sweet and kind,” saying she had just finished university and was looking forward to her graduation.

“Nobody deserves this,” Adamu said. “It shouldn’t be happening to anyone.”

Insecurity: Wike asks CP to establish additional police divisions

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has asked the Police Commissioner, FCT Command, to establish two additional Police Divisions in Gwagwalada Area Council of the territory.

Wike made the demand during a security town hall with relevant stakeholders on Friday in Gwagwalada, to find lasting solutions to security challenges affecting the federal capital.

The order was in response to the request by the Council’s Chairman, Mr Abubakar Giri, who pleaded for the additional divisions to improve security, particularly in border communities.

Giri said that the area council currently has only two police divisions, one each in Zuba and Gwagwalada.

He also complained of abandoned buildings that have constituted security threats in the area, as most of the buildings have become safe haven for criminals.

Wike, who acknowledged the challenges, assured residents of the area of President Bola Tinubu’ resolve to address the security challenges in the FCT.

He said that the two police divisions would be established immediately considering the security exigency.

The minister also said that he had secured President Tinubu’s approval to procure and distribute operational vehicles and communications gadgets to the police and other security agencies in the FCT.

Wike asked the council chairman to write to him unfailingly on Monday, indicating the number and locations of all uncompleted buildings constituting security threats in the area.

He assured the residents that he would approve the demolition of the uncompleted buildings or alternatively transfer ownership of the buildings to the communities to complete and put them to good use.

He also promised to construct a befitting health facility and implement other development projects in the area as requested by the residents.

“I am here on the directive of President Tinubu to meet and discuss with you the prevailing security challenges and find lasting solutions together.

“I was in Bwari Area Council on Wednesday and today I am here at Gwagwalada on the same issue. Next week I will visit another area council until we cover all the six area councils.

“Security is one of the priorities of the currency government, so, be rest assured that you are not alone, and we will do all that we can to end security challenges in the territory,” he said.

Earlier, the Aguma of Gwagwalada, Mohammed Magaji, urged the minister to assist the police with more operational vehicles to enhance security operations in the area.

Magaji said Gwagwalada Police Division has only one operational vehicle, which is also in terribly bad.

The traditional leader also called for the construction of an additional General Hospital in the area to provide quality health service to residents.

Wike had on Wednesday, began a tour of the six Area Councils of the FCT to meet with community leaders and relevant stakeholders over security concerns.

The visit, which began with Bwari Area Council, was in response to the recent spike in the abductions and killings of residents by bandits, especially in Kuje and Bwari area councils.

Wike had told stakeholders in Bwari that the FCT Administration would provide the needed logistics and equipment to support security agencies to flush out criminals terrorising the territory.
