FG responds to US security alert in Abuja

The Federal Government has assured that Abuja is safe for citizens and visitors alike, and security agencies are working round the clock to ensure protection of all residents .

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, gave the assurances in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

Idris was reacting to the latest security advisory issued by the Embassy of the United States, restricting its staff members and their families from non-official travel to military sites or other government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

“While the Federal Government recognises and respects the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.

“Nigeria’s security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the continued safety and protection of all residents of the FCT and across the country.

“The current security architecture in Abuja has not only been proactive but has also recorded significant successes in detecting, preventing, and neutralizing threats,” he said

Idris noted that the U.S. advisory, which was based on general global developments did not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the Federal Capital Territory.

He reiterated to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that, “there is no cause for alarm”.

“The Federal Government wishes to reaffirm its commitment to the safety of all residents and to maintaining Abuja’s reputation as one of the most secure capitals in the world.

“Our security and intelligence agencies are monitoring developments across the country and are fully prepared to respond decisively to any threat.

“We encourage citizens to conduct their lawful activities without fear, while also remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities,” he said.

US sends strong security alert to residents staying in Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert advising American citizens to avoid non-official visits to military and government installations in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

TheNewsGuru reports that the advisory was released on Sunday in response to growing global and domestic security concerns. As a precaution, the U.S. Embassy has imposed restrictions on its personnel and their families.

“All U.S. Embassy employees and their family members are currently restricted from non-official visits to Nigerian military and government facilities in Abuja,” the statement read.

The embassy noted that the directive is part of a broader strategy of “heightened caution” but did not disclose specific details about the nature of the potential threats.

American citizens in Nigeria are being urged to remain vigilant, especially in areas commonly frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government workers. The embassy recommended avoiding large gatherings, limiting non-essential travel, and maintaining awareness of surroundings in public spaces.

    Additional safety measures advised include:

•Varying daily routines to avoid predictability

•Familiarizing oneself with emergency exits in buildings

    •Updating personal security plans regularly

Despite the restrictions, the U.S. Mission confirmed that its diplomatic facilities remain fully operational.

“The Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and continue to provide assistance,” the advisory stated.

The U.S. government also encouraged American citizens in Nigeria to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a service that provides real-time alerts and emergency updates to U.S. nationals abroad.

Air Peace to begin Abuja-London flight in October

Air Peace Airline has announced the commencement of Abuja to Heathrow Airport in London on Oct. 26 after receiving grant from the British authority.

The Chairman of the airline, Dr Allen Onyema, made the announcement at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

Onyema disclosed that the grant was as a result of the confidence the international aviation community has in the airline.

He also announced that before the end of year, the airline would add Congo, Garbon and Brazzaville to its schedule.

Onyema said that the flights from Abuja to London Heathrow would be four times weekly, with
Lagos to London Gatwick three time daily.

He also said there would be direct flights to the Caribbean, particularly Antigua in September and later, to Barbados.

The airline boss assured increased fleet capacity of Boeing 777, wide bodied aircraft acquisition as a result of the dry lease financing, among other new aircraft to match the schedules.

According to him, the airline has 36 outrightly purchased aircraft and four on wet lease, with new aircraft expected soon.

He assured passengers of on-time services, saying “since May 12, we have posted over 85 per cent on-time performance.

“For the new Air Peace you are about to see, we assure our passengers of on-time services and we are upgrading our Customer Service.”

On flight delays and cancellations, Onyema said 94 per cent were not caused by the airline but external forces.

He identified the causes as: weather, infrastructure, bird strikes, inadequate landing equipment, sunset airports, unruly passengers, animal strikes, among others.

He explained that “in the last five years, we recorded 100 bird strikes; this year alone, over 30 bird strikes, these strikes will affect other flights scheduled for that day.

“We do not cancel for the fun of it, we cancel when necessary”, he said.

Onyema noted that the airline has international validations because of its safety measures.

He also announced that the airline would restart China route soon, as well as other regional and international routes.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, for ensuring ease of doing business in the industry.

He added that “the sector had never had it so good, as Nigeria would soon take delivery of dry lease aircraft as a result of the doggedness of the minister.”

He expressed the hope that Nigerians would patronise and support the airline.

Abuja resident exposes new tactics of ‘one chance’ robbers

Habib Yakoob, an Abuja resident, has taken to social media to share  a new strategy used by the notorious “one chance” gang to attack residents in the nation’s capital.

According to Yakoob, via his verified Facebook on Monday, said the gang’s tactics have evolved, making it difficult for commuters to distinguish between genuine passengers and potential robbers.

“Bad boys are getting more strategic and daring in Abuja these days. The “one chance” phenomenon is being redefined. It’s no longer just about jumping into a vehicle with four suspicious-looking men or women and finding yourself the lone “customer.”

“These days, even when you’re surrounded by strangers who look like regular passengers, you never can tell, you could still be walking into a trap,” he posted.

Yakoobwho, who is the spokesperson of University of Abuja (UniAbuja), narrated a recent incident on how his colleague was robbed along Airport Road while on his way to work.

A couple of weeks ago, a colleague of mine was robbed in a small Golf car along the Airport Road on his way to work. When he boarded the vehicle, only the driver and a man pretending to be asleep were inside.

“He entered and took a seat. Another man immediately joined him behind, while a young man entered the front seat, bringing the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver, to five. They still needed two more passengers.

“The driver drove a short distance, pretending to pick up passengers. Each time someone approached, he either asked if they had change or dismissed them for flimsy reasons. It all seemed normal. Until it wasn’t.

“Eventually, he picked one man who claimed to have change. That man entered and sat behind, making four passengers in the back. Another man slipped into the front seat. They are seven now: three at the front and four behind,” he narrated.

According to him, the robbers, including the driver, strategically positioned themselves to block all exits, producing a dagger, locally made pistol, and knives to demand valuables from passengers.

He further stated that the victim and two others were robbed of their phones and money before being pushed out of the car.

“A few kilometres down the road, the driver suddenly veered to the shoulder, saying he needed to check the air in his tyres. That was when the man in the front turned to the other passenger beside him and asked for his phone. The passenger looked confused, until he noticed that his once innocent-looking co-passenger was clutching a dagger tightly.

“My colleague, who sat behind, was about to raise the alarm when he felt something cold and hard pressed into his ribs: it was a locally made pistol held by the half-asleep man he had met earlier behind the driver. Now fully alert, the man growled, “Oya, your phone, laptop, anything.”

“Only his phone and some cash were taken. The driver had parked in a way that somehow shielded the scene from passersby. At the same time, the man who had entered last in the back was now brandishing a small knife at the third passenger, demanding his belongings too.

“And that was how four bad guys including the driver strategically positioned at every exit point of the vehicle, robbed my colleague and two other passengers. After collecting their phones and money, the bandits pushed them out of the car, while the man with the gun kept pointing it at them, daring anyone to make a sound. Then they zoomed off,” he said.

Yakoob stated that his colleague, who is still grappling with how he could have avoided the “one chance” gang, is yet to recover from the traumatic incident.

“Till now, I doubt whether my colleague has recovered from the shock. He still isn’t sure how he could have avoided the trap. He has since reported the incident to the police. But as he told me, “Hmm, this country? We just have to be more cautious and prayerful these days!”,he narrated.

Woman rescued from ‘one chance’ criminals in Abuja enters coma

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) says it has rescued a woman, who was forcefully pushed out of a moving vehicle in Asokoro, Abuja, on Friday.

The department’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Nkechi Isa, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Isa said that the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse Bus Stop Junction,Yakubu Gowon Crescent in Asokoro.

According to her, eyewitnesses at the scene said the woman was pushed out of a moving vehicle suspected to be a robbery, by “one chance” operators.

She described “one chance” as a criminal gang posing as commercial drivers with passengers, leaving one space (one chance) for an unsuspecting victim.

Once they take off, the criminals dispossess the victims of their valuables and often throw them out of the moving vehicle.

She said that the FEMD Search and Rescue Team was notified of the incident by the FCT Fire Service and immediately swooped into action.

“On arrival at the scene, the team found the victim, identified as Khadija Salisu, unconscious but without visible physical injury.

“She was promptly taken to the Asokoro District Hospital and is responding to treatment,” Isa said.

UPDATED; Attempt to bomb Abuja Barracks foiled as IED explodes, kills carrier, injures 2

An attempt to bomb the Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja was thwarted yesterday when an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly being carried by an unidentified individual, detonated prematurely. Military police and intelligence officers, acting on suspicion, intercepted the individual before he could enter the military facility in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to sources, the suspect was directed away from the checkpoint toward a bridge bypass after arousing suspicion. Moments later, the IED exploded, killing the carrier instantly and injuring two bystanders, who were quickly transported to a military hospital for treatment.

As of press time, the Nigerian military had not released an official statement regarding the incident.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed the explosion, which occurred near the Mararaba–Nyanya bypass.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh said the explosion was reported at approximately 2:50 p.m. on May 26, 2025.

She noted that officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were swiftly deployed to secure the scene and carry out initial investigations. The affected area was cordoned off to ensure public safety and allow for forensic examination.

“One male victim was rescued and taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment,” Adeh said.

She added that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause and specifics of the explosion, and urged the public to stay calm and continue with their daily activities.

“Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements to the nearest police station,” the statement concluded.

FCT nurses, workers protest against closure of healthcare centers

The FCT chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) on Thursday staged a protest in Abuja.

The protest was over the shutdown of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports primary healthcare centers across the FCT have been shut down with pregnant women, near delivery, chased away.

Their demands include the immediate reopening of PHCs, implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, and payment of outstanding arrears and allowances.

The protest also included members of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

It was in response to the ongoing health crisis caused by the prolonged closure of more than 270 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the six area councils in the FCT.

Speaking during the protest, Mr Jama Medan, Chairman of NANNM-FCT, lamented the deteriorating health situation, stating that Nigeria ranked second globally in maternal and child mortality rates.

He warned that continued closure of PHCs could worsen the crisis.

“We have less than 130 nurses and midwives manning these centres. Women and children are dying because the facilities have been shut for over a month.

“There’s a gross shortage of manpower, and no one in government is addressing the issue,” Medan said.

He alleged that in spite of the release of more than N4.1 billion by the FCT Minister to address the crisis, area council chairmen had refused to pay entitlements.

These entitlements, he said include hazard and uniform allowances for nurses and other health workers.

Medan also expressed concern over the disruption of a scheduled nationwide polio vaccination campaign in the FCT due to the shutdown, warning that the territory risked new cases of the disease.

In solidarity, NUT FCT Chairman, Mr Abdullahi Shafa, condemned the non-payment of minimum wage to primary school teachers, noting that they had been on strike for more than a month.

He called on the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, to intervene urgently to avoid a total collapse of the education system in the area councils.

The NLC also threatened to join the protest if the minister failed to act on the workers’ demands within a week.

Responding on behalf of the Minister, Dr Hayyo Danlami, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, promised to deliver the protesters’ letter to the minister and assured them that their concerns would be addressed.
