  • FG commences investigation into cause of earth tremors in Abuja

FG commences investigation into cause of earth tremors in Abuja

Federal Government has initiated a thorough investigation into the root causes of the recent earth tremors that ravaged the Mpape area in Abuja.

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, while briefing the media on Wednesday, assured the public that a team of experts from the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) is actively analyzing the tremors using sophisticated earthquake analysis software.

According to data from seismographs, the tremors included three foreshocks and three aftershocks, with the main seismic event occurring at 11:18:37 p.m., which recorded a local magnitude of 3.1 and a focal depth of 11 km.

Experts believe that this significant geological disturbance may be attributed to the reactivation of faults within the Mpape locality, a region that has experienced similar tremors in the past, notably between September 5 and 7, 2018.

Nnaji noted that while these tremors have understandably caused alarm, residents should remain calm as NASRDA continues to monitor the situation closely.

The Minister also assured that the government is analyzing comprehensive data from seismic and GNSS stations to formulate mitigation strategies.

Tension as earthquake scare hits Abuja

Residents of Abuja living at Mpape in Bwari Area Council have been thrown into panic over continued suspected earth tremors and vibration in parts of the city.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports earth tremor is a relatively small or short-lived movement of the earth’s surface caused by the same forces that produce earthquakes.

Dr Ebenezer Adebisi, Chairman of Mpape Hills Landlord Association, disclosed on Tuesday that the residents had been experiencing the vibration in the past five days.

Adebisi, who is a retired Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said that was not the first time the resident of the area were having such experience.

He said although it happened some years ago, it had become more consistent in the past five days. According to him, residents of the area felt the tremor and vibration were more than the usual ones they experienced during the blasting of rocks in the area by quarry companies.

He said the vibration was more intense throughout Sunday and Monday night, adding that: “we don’t really know what would have caused the vibration.

“I have also confirmed that those in Gwarinpa and Katampe areas are also experiencing the same thing, but the government has not said anything officially up till now.

“It is important we let Nigerians know the situation now; we are calling on the Nigerian government and the Nigeria Geological Agency to come to the rescue of the resident.

He said urgent measures needed to be taken before things got out of hand, urging the government to advise the residents on the next line of action.

Mrs Florence Ilesanmi, a resident of Gwari Village, Mpape also told NAN that she had been experiencing the same thing.

Madam Aisha Lawal, a resident at the Crushrock area of Mpape shared a similar experience with NAN, saying that the interval of the vibration was a source of worry.

An official of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to do so urged the residents to consider temporary relocation if the tremor continued.

The official told one of the residents who contacted him that the residents should continue to record the frequency of the vibration.

“I googled the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA). They told me I should be recording anytime the vibration occurred again.

“I was able to speak with one of the officers of the agency, who confirmed that all their equipment are already on ground to forestall any emergency. They said if the vibration is heavy we should try and evacuate from the premises for now,” Lawal said.

  • Fear grips Abuja residents over earth tremors

Fear grips Abuja residents over earth tremors

Residents in Mpape community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) experienced earth tremors, raising fears that there could be an imminent earthquake.

Mpape community, an Abuja suburb in Bwari Area Council in the FCT, is situated less than 10 minutes’ from the Abuja highbrow district of Maitama. It’s densely populated with many low earners as well as the middle class among its residents.

Residents who spoke to the Daily Trust during a visit on Monday disclosed that the earth tremor experience, accompanied with a devastated sound, was first noticed on Saturday and continued on Sunday as well as yesterday, Monday.

The situation is well noted around areas like P.W Neighbourhood, and Mopol 24 barracks, two areas sandwiched by the lonely single road that leads into the community. It has also been heard around Katampe junction, the area linked with the Murtala Muhammad Expressway.

A resident, Obinna Ngozi said the buildings shake whenever the movement takes place, causing fear in the minds of the residents.

The resident said he noticed the movement about 10 times on Saturday alone from when it started sometime around 4 pm, adding that the situation got worse the following day, Sunday.

Another resident who gave his name as Muhammad Ibrahim, said he earlier mistook the development as a bomb blast, as according to him, it sounded quite different from that of quarry mining, in which the area has made its name in the past.

A mining blaster, Nasiru Ahmad who spent years in the profession within the community noted that one can hardly be able to understand where the sound is originating from, unlike that of stone blasting, that is easy to be identified.

He, however, described a similar incident that took place about three years ago in the area as a more devastating one, which according to him was felt at far districts of Gishiri, Jahi, Maitama, as well as AYA, in Asokoro District, in the FCT.

A chief in the community, Peter David, said the last incident had originated from the Arab Road area in the community about three years ago. “Following that incident, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had sanctioned all mining activities in the community.

“However, the compliance only lasted for about three months, before the operators returned back to their known sites, and continued with their mining activities.”

Hunger Protest: Thousands come out for one-million-man protest in Abuja (photos)

Thousands of #EndBadGoverance protesters on Saturday, embarked on a one-million-man march in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the protest took a new and unprecedented turn in the FCT after passion-driven youths came out in their numbers in compliance with its organizers’ order to conduct a one-million-man protest across all 36 States of the Federation.

Recall the hunger protests kickstarted on August 1 as many Nigerians from all corners of the country trooped out in mass to demand the government’s attention, over the country’s harsh economy that has seen the Naira greatly devalued and the cost of living reaching new levels.

President Bola Tinubu, had addressed the nation after three days of demonstrations asking protesters to leave the streets as their voices had been heard.

Despite the president’s address, the protests which were largely peaceful went awry in some parts of the country, especially in the northern region, as looting and destruction of both public and private enterprises becomes the order of the day. Due to the violence, the protest was shut down.

The organizers of the one-million-man protest notes that the one-day demonstration is to signify the grand finale of the hunger protest.

In the photos and video seen on social media, protesters took to the streets in the early hours of Saturday, displaying various placards and chanting, “we are hungry’’ among others.
