  • Abuja: Hygienic concerns over open display of food by vendors in Apo Market

Abuja: Hygienic concerns over open display of food by vendors in Apo Market

    From Jonas Ike, Abuja

Many traders who sell motor spare parts and its accessories at the popular Auto Spare Parts Market Apo (ASPAMA) Abuja may not be in the best state of health due largely to the prevalence of food vendors who ply this trade with open food trucks in the automotive market.

The spare parts market located about 4 or 5 kilometres away from the popular Apo Round About near Area 1 in Abuja metropolis is one of the biggest markets in the Abuja Municipal Area Council AMAC since the relocation of the Federal Capital Territory from Lagos to Abuja.

It is worrisome to notice however, the prevalence of food vendors who ply their trade in open trucks and other locomotives as they move about in and around the market selling food to the people who mostly are traders in the market.

They showcase their food items in open trucks, wheel barrows and plastic buckets in their efforts to attract customers who usually buy their food for breakfast, lunch and at other times for crucial meetings.

Upon investigation, this reporter was told that many of these food vendors which cut across various ethnic nationalities are registered as a corporate entities with the Corporate Affairs Commission CAC.

They move from one end of the market to the other dishing out food to these traders upon request and usually give them time to finish eating the food before taking back their plates for the continuation of their businesses.

It is however noteworthy that most of these food vendors may not have been subjected through the fundamental hygiene tests that are need to ensure the health, safety and environmental protection of the citizenry.

An average Abuja trader does not necessarily inquire where and how a food vendor came to the market to sell food but would quickly call the menu upon sighting one of these food hawkers.

It has therefore become imperative for the relevant authorities in the Abuja Municipal Area Council AMAC to regulate the trade of food selling at Apo market with a view to ensuring that every citizen is protected from diseases.

It is possible that some of these food vendors are in the habit of preparing their food items in areas very close to culverts, drainages and other dirty environments that can cause the spread of communicable diseases.

There is no gainsaying that many incidences of death and obituary posters that were seen in and around the precincts of the market is as a result of contamination of food from food sources that were not certified free of disease by relevant the government agencies in Abuja.

In the days of our ancestors, they lived longer and healthier lives because they consumed things that match genetic constitution but that is no longer obtainable in the present days due to this anormaly.

The worrisome cases of cancer, heart disease, waist pain, poor eye sight, piles, body weakness, rheumatism, arthritis and other diseases that are life threatening can be traced to non-higeniec food eaten by the suffers of these diseases in an unsafe environment.

  • Excessive make-up, photo apps on social media deceitful — Abuja men

Excessive make-up, photo apps on social media deceitful — Abuja men

Men living in Abuja, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have described the excessive use of make-up and photo apps on pictures to enhance looks on the social media by women as deceitful.

In different interviews on Friday, some of the men told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the use of make-up, even though it accentuates facial looks, could hide blemishes and project beautiful images of ladies, yet was still deceitful.

Mr John Fidelis, a photographer in Asokoro area of Abuja, said that he was in the business of taking pictures, and there were some applications that could enhance picture quality with smart phones.

Fidelis said “With some of these picture editing apps on smart phones, the ugliest woman can appear attractive.

“It is good to enhance your beauty or your look as a woman, but it should not be done to the extreme because too much of everything is bad’’.

The photographer said that most women were in the habit of carefully selecting pictures taken in studios, edited with photo apps, before posting them on social media.

Gbenga Alba, a graphic designer condemned the current trend now predominantly seen on social media platforms.

According to Alba, women are not expected to apply make-up everytime. They should consider the occasion, either to apply light, heavy make-up or avoid it totally.

“In as much as our women need to be classy and presentable most of the time, there are situation whereby issues can be urgent, she will not need to spend quality time applying make-up.

“I feel that applying the make-up is a waste of time and it doesn’t allow prospective husband know the real features of the spouse if they don’t have the opportunity of being together before marriage,’ he said.

While contradicting the above, Mrs Jecinta Nnamdi, a civil servant said the use of make-up makes her look younger, attractive and presentable.

“There are times when I leave my face bare without make-up people ask me if I am alright or ill that is why I rarely leave my house without make-up,” she added.

Similarly, Hauwa Usman, a make-up artist emphasised the need for ladies to apply make-up as it could enhance their beauty, self-esteem and confidence.

Usman went further to say that some of the cosmetics used in applying make-up have contents that protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

“Makeup is used as a beauty aid to help build up the self-esteem and confidence of a person, as well as enhance the appearance and make the person feel more confident.

“Also, recent research shows that make-up helps protect the skin from harmful rays of the sun.

“Many beauty products manufacturers have considered the needs of women to protect themselves and their skin from the rays of the sun,” she said.

She, therefore, urged people to stop condemning or criticising women who apply make-up to enhance their looks.

According to her, it is a trend that has come to stay, in addition to creating job opportunities for artists, and boosting the confidence of Nigerian womenfolk.
