AC Milan no longer need Ibrahimovic, says club legend

AC Milan legend, Billy Costacurta believes the team no longer needs Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, he says the Swede, 40, should be handed a new one year contract.

“I think that Milan no longer needs Ibra,” said Costacurta.

“I’d confirm him for one more season, but Milan no longer depends on him. This has been the real step forward. The team has matured.”

Milan will meet Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli on Sunday.

“The title won’t be decided in games between direct opponents. There isn’t a team who can run away on top of the table,” added Costacurta.

“Spalletti has joined the perfect team to win the title. Those who worked there before him added something. Now it’s up to him. Pioli has created a team out of a group of individualists.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he wants to win a trophy with AC Milan before retiring.

The 40 year-old striker’s contract expires in June.

“My future is football, my world is football,” said Ibrahimovic.

“I am disappointed that I am not able to play at the moment, this really pains me, especially when the team is doing well. I want to be there and help the team, we’ve done great things since I arrived and now we are only missing one element: a trophy.

“We are fighting to achieve this, I won’t quit until I have won something with this Milan side.”

  • Giroud’s late brace, moves AC Milan closer to Serie A leaders

Giroud’s late brace, moves AC Milan closer to Serie A leaders

Olivier Giroud scored a quickfire late double to earn AC Milan a dramatic 2-1 win over Inter Milan at San Siro on Saturday.

The victory moved his side within a point of the Serie A leaders.

AC Milan had taken just one point from their previous two matches and were on the verge of losing again.

This was after Ivan Perisic’s first-half volley had Inter Milan firmly in control of Saturday’s clash.

But goalkeeper Mike Maignan ensured the designated visitors were still in the game and, from pretty much out of nowhere, AC Milan caught Inter Milan cold due to Giroud’s double.

The France international contentiously converted from close range to equalise in the 75th minute.

He completed the turnaround three minutes later to stun Simone Inzaghi’s side.

AC Milan’s only blot was a late red card for Theo Hernandez.

Denzel Dumfries had an early goal ruled out for offside and was later denied from a one-on-one by Maignan, who was also equal to Marcelo Brozovic’s deflected drive.

Samir Handanovic was also needed to deny Sandro Tonali, but the breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute when Perisic volleyed in ex-AC Milan winger Calhanoglu’s corner-kick.

Stefano Pioli turned to Junior Messias and Brahim Diaz in the second half but AC Milan continued to pose little attacking threat until a dramatic final quarter to the game.

Giroud slid in to convert Diaz’s deflected shot, though Inter Milan were unhappy the goal was allowed to stand.

This was because the goalscorer clattered into Alexis Sanchez at the start of the move.

Inter Milan failed to compose themselves and conceded another almost instantly as Giroud held off Stefan de Vrij and fired in a shot that squirmed under the hand of Handanovic.

Theo Hernandez was dismissed deep into added time for a rash challenge on Dumfries, though AC Milan saw out a huge win that keeps the Scudetto race wide open.

  • Why I chose AC Milan and Italy – Giroud

Why I chose AC Milan and Italy – Giroud

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has no doubts he made the right choice moving to Italy.

    Giroud left Chelsea last summer.

He said, “Coming into contact with the others was easy for me as I knew a bit of Italian thanks to my grandmother’s origins. I knew a few words and this is important.

“My integration was also helped by the fact that there are several players who speak French, I found guys I knew and in the end what the coach asks of me on the pitch is not too complicated for me, because I know what he expects from me and what I have to do.

“It’s more about adapting to the referees who have a tendency to whistle for lighter contacts than they do in the Premier League.”

Giroud also told Colinterview about joining Milan.

“I clearly accepted immediately, for me it was a test. I spoke with the manager Massara and Maldini and I immediately realised that they were looking for me and with the speech they gave me I was immediately convinced. I want to win and return to the top in Italy.

Milan have announced the defender is expected to be sidelined for around 30 days.

Tomori thanked the fans for their support, saying: “Successful surgery today, aiming to return to the pitch as soon as possible.

“Thank you all for your messages of support.”

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud was happy to score in victory over Roma last night.

Giroud opened the scoring from the spot as Milan went onto win 3-1.

The Frenchman later said: “I don’t believe in the curse of the number 9 shirt, but sometimes I thought about it after the physical problems I have had (smiles).

“Now I’m fine, I feel good with the team. We lost a few points in the last period, so it was important to start the year well.

“I’m happy for the goal, I was a bit unlucky on the second goals, but then (Junior) Messias did well.”

On young defenders Matteo Gabbia and Pierre Kalulu, Giroud continued: “I told then a little about (Tammy) Abraham’s weaknesses, he is a very strong forward and he showed it again today. Pierre and Matteo did well.”

The Swedish striker spent four years in Paris, but he left a year before Mbappe arrived from Monaco.

“It’s true that I advised [Mbappe] to leave the club,” Ibrahimovic told the Corriere della Sera.

“He needs a more structured environment, like the one at Real Madrid.

Hakan Calhanoglu has explained leaving AC Milan for Inter Milan last summer.

The midfielder switched city clubs in a Bosman deal and scored against his old club earlier this season.

“I spent positive seasons at Milan,” Calhanoglu told 433. “I still have many friends there.

“I decided to go to Inter because I wanted a new challenge in my career. They are a great club, they won the league last season and play in the Champions League.

“I am aware that I made a particular choice. But this is life. You must look forward and not look back. I knew that Inter has always been a great team, they often beat Milan in derbies.”
