    ASUU: OAU fixes October 20 for resumption

    The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced that the School will reopen  for academic activities on Thursday, 20th of October, 2022.

    This announcement was made public by the Registrar and Secretary to Council of the university.

    The citadel of learning has directed the students to return to Halls of Residence on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s re-opening.

    The statement reads in part, “The students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have been directed to return to Halls of Residence on Wednesday, 19th October, 2022, while full academic activities will commence on Thursday, 20th October, 2022 for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session.

    “The decision was taken at a special meeting of the University Senate, which held in Oduduwa Hall on Tuesday, 18th October, 2022.

    “On behalf of the Council and Senate of the University, we wish our students an uninterrupted academic session and a safe trip from their respective locations.”

    Strike: UniJos suspends academic activities

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has suspended academic activities in the institution for the 2020/2021 academic session.

    Abdullahi Abdullahi, Deputy Registrar, Information and Publication of the university, said this in statement on Thursday in Jos.

    According to Abdullahi, the Vice Chancellor gave approval, on behalf the Senate of the university, after an emergency meeting of the institution’s management.

    He said that the decision to suspend academic activities was based on the one-month strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

    “The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, on behalf of its Senate, has approved suspension of academic activities for the 2020/2021 until further notice.

    “This followed an emergency meeting of the university’s management where issue of the strike declared by ASUU was considered as it affects academic activities “the statement said.

    Killings: UNIJOS suspends academic activities, shuts hostels

    The University of Jos on Friday suspended academic activities and closed its hostels.

    The suspension order was due to the intensified killing of students around the university area shortly after the relaxation of a 24-hour curfew in Jos.

    According to a press statement signed by the University Registrar, Monday Danjem, all students are to return home or safer locations until normalcy is restored.

    The University management also approved the suspension of examinations for the second semester 2019/2020 academic session.

    The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of management and committee of deans, directors and provost of the university.

    Last Saturday, travellers along Rukuba road in Jos North Local Government had been attacked, heightening tensions in the state.

    At least 25 persons were confirmed killed and 14 injured in the attack.

    To curb further attacks, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, had imposed a curfew on Jos North, Bassa and Jos South Local Government Areas.

    JUST IN: Kaduna varsity suspend undergraduate academic activities indefinitely

    Management of the Kaduna State University (KASU) have asked all undergraduate students to remain at home until further notice.

    KASU Registrar Samuel Manshop disclosed this in a bulletin made available to TheNewsGuru.com, TNG on Tuesday.

    Although no reason was stated for but some lecturers of the university disclosed to TNG that the suspension is to calm the tension associated to tuition fee increase by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

    “Postgraduate programmes, College of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Part-Time programmes are to continue with activities” Manshop said.

    He added that “Staff are also expected to report to work as usual”

    COVID-19: FG orders universities to suspend academic activities

    For university students, hope of return to classrooms following the suspension of over 9 months’ strike by university lecturers earlier in the week was again dashed on Friday.

    This followed directive by the National Universities Commission, NUC, to Vice-Chancellors that put academic activities in universities should be put on hold for now in compliance with COVID-19 protocol of prohibition of activities involving large gathering of people.

    In the directive issued in a circular signed by Chris Maiyaki, its Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration), NUC said classrooms, hostel accommodation, conferences and seminars should be suspended in accordance to COVID-19 protocol of prohibition of large gatherings.

    It further directed that universities should remain closed pending further directives by FG on the reopening of schools.

    “Vice-Chancellors are to please note that the directive is part of the measures approved by Mr. President to mitigate the second wave of Coronavirus infections in the country. The affected officers are expected to perform their duties from home while those on GL 13 and above should strictly adhere to the extant preventive measures, including maintenance of physical distancing, regular washing of hands and/or sanitizing of hands, wearing of face masks and reducing the number of visitors to offices,” it said.

  • FG approves commencement of academic activities at Maritime University

    The Federal Government has approved the commencement of academic activities at the Maritime University of Nigeria Okerenkoko, Delta state in October.

    This was revealed by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr Dakuku Peterside on Thursday at the celebration of the 2017 World Seafarers’ Day tagged Seafarers’ Matters, at Onne Port-Harcourt.

    The DG also said that the agency was at the advanced stage of placing 943 NSDP Cadets on-board vessels for requisite Sea time training.

    He explained that the establishment of the university will sustain efforts of the agency towards building requisite capacity for the nation’s maritime industry.

    In his words: “Permit me to state that the government is revisiting the establishment of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko, Delta state and the acting President, Prof. Yemi Oshibajo has directed that academic activities should start by October this year.

    “Also, other Institutes for maritime studies in six universities across the country are sustainable efforts by the agency towards building the requisite capacity for the industry.”

    Peterside who is also the Chairman of Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA), said due to the importance of seafarers to world trade and economy, they occupy a pride of place in the agency’s activities.

    “For us in NIMASA, the seafarers will continue to occupy the pride of place in our activities which explains why priority attention is being paid to the development of human capacity through the adoption of a multi-strategy approach aim at encouraging the young school leavers to take a career at sea as cadets through the National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP).”

    Speaking on the arrangement to put NSDP Cadets on vessels for Seatime, Peterside said, “Permit me to also mention that arrangements are at advanced stage for the placement of 943 cadets of the NSDP on board vessels for their mandatory Seatime.”

    “The purpose is to ensure that the country has adequate skilled manpower for the maritime industry especially in meeting the demands of the Cabotage regime.

    “In this regards, the Agency in March this year facilitated the training of 428 seafarers on mandatory courses and other specific areas of specialisation for career progression.”

    The DG also disclosed at the event that the agency has so far facilitated training for 2,259 young Nigerians in various fields of maritime studies I globally reputable maritime institutions.

    “The agency has so far facilitated the training of 2,259 young Nigerians in various fields of maritime studies in reputable maritime institutions in the United Kingdom, Egypt, Romania, India and Philippines,” he said to the cadets.
