COVID-19: Access Bank opens up alleged sack of 75% workforce, closure of branches

Access Bank Plc on Monday denied news making rounds that it would sack 75 per cent of its workforce and as well close over 300 branches.

The bank denied this in a statement signed by Mr Sunday Ekwochi, its Company Secretary, posted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) website.

It said the closure of a bank branch was an action that required the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the bank, it has not applied for nor obtained the approval of CBN for the closure of its branches as widely speculated.

“The bank has only suspended operations in some branches following the directive by the CBN.

“At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, we suspended in-branch operations at different locations as directed by the CBN and in line with business continuity plans at vulnerable spots; whilst we continued to provide services through our alternative digital platforms.

“In line with the phased re-opening of the economy effective May 4, following the Presidential directives, we will be resuming in-branch services in some of our affected branches in a programmed manner to ensure the health and safety of our employees and customers.

“This is also necessary to provide relevant contingency should there be any incident arising from the pandemic.

“We deny in its entirety the baseless and twisted speculation that the bank is sacking 75 per cent of its workforce,” said the statement.

It noted that based on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, not all its branches would be fully open for in-branch services until later in the year.

“This has made it impossible for many of our outsourced workers to perform duties as usual.

“We have commenced engagement with various stakeholders with a view to ensuring that they provide the relevant services and optimum manpower as may be required by the bank on an on-going basis,” it added.

The bank, however, assured its esteemed stakeholders that it would continue to ensure that its actions and decisions are guided by fairness, justice, equity and good conscience.

  • COVID-19 Realities: Access Bank MD, Herbert Wigwe agrees to 40% pay cut, speaks on imminent sack of staff [Video]

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc., Herbert Wigwe as agreed to take a 40 per cent pay cut as the harsh reality of the Coronavirus [COVID-19] bites harder.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Nigerian banks and other private establishments are facing the threat of rising bad-debt levels as a crash in oil prices and the risk of a naira devaluation coincide with the Covid-19 pandemic that has shuttered businesses.

While presenting the bank’s adjustments to the realities, Wigwe in a video that has now gone viral on social media empathised with staff saying “everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort”.

“We probably don’t need as many security men as required, even to the fact that we are not going to have all our branches open between now and December,” he said.

“We certainly don’t need all the security men. We don’t need all the tea girls. We don’t all the cleaners. We don’t need all the tellers et cetera et cetera

“So that number of staff which represent 75% of our staff strength, I think, is the one we basically need to speak with their employers with a view to getting them to rationalise to the level that we think will be necessary to basically sustain a mean but actually a customer service-oriented institution.”

Wigwe said discussions are already ongoing with recruiting agencies and contracting firms on how to cut back on the workforce.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that it is going to bring its own pain to staff. We basically have to make the adjustment the same way it sounded when we spoke ten days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost

“would be the first to take the hit and I’m going to take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as forty per cent (40%).

“The rest, we shall have to cascade right through the institution.”

Assuring that the bank will revert to what is normal when things improve, Wigwe said the adjustments are necessary to survive the difficult times.

“What is important is that these adjustments are what is required at a time when we see Armageddon when we see great difficulty coming in, to make sure that if there is one institution left standing in this country as a bank, it must be Access Bank,” he said.

“We appreciate the fact that it is going to hurt people but we necessarily have to take that adjustment to ensure that we protect our franchise and make us stronger as we move into the future.”

TNG reports that Access Bank, which acquired rival Diamond Bank Plc in 2019, had 6,898 permanent staff at the end of that year (2019), according to a presentation on its website.

The acquisition partly contributed to a 31% increase in operating expenses. Personnel, recruitment and training costs account for more than a third of overheads after the deal boosted employee numbers and resulted in “wage harmonization” across the businesses.

Access Bank discontinues old Diamond Bank cheques

The management of Access Bank Plc has sent a notice to all customers of the defunct Diamond Bank Plc that it has discontinued cheques of the old financial institution from Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Recall that in March 2019, Access Bank and Diamond Bank completed their merger, which commenced in late 2018. The marriage was done to give room for Access Bank to penetrate the retail side of the banking industry.

Before the coming together of the two lenders into an entity, Diamond Bank was seen as one of the kings of the retail market, with Access Bank mainly as a corporate banking institution.

But in order to make its presence known in the retail banking, which Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) was already dominating among the ‘big five boys’ of the banking sector in Nigeria, Access Bank had to lure Diamond Bank to become one.

After the merger, customers of the defunct financial institution were integrated into the new organisation, while the services being enjoyed were continued, including promos and others.

In a notice released, Access Bank informed customers of the defunct Diamond Bank that, “In order to process your transactions more efficiently, we wish to inform you that effective March 1, 2020, we will discontinue honouring all cheques bearing the logo of the former Diamond Bank.

For those who still have the old cheque book, Access Bank advised them to “walk into any branch to select your preferred pick-up branch (existing or other). You can also contact your Relationship Officer.”

Access Bank further said those affected by this new development and have selected their preferred pick-up bank “will receive an SMS notification from your preferred pick-up branch. Please visit this branch to collect your new Access Bank cheque book.”
